Obviously new mobile devices are becoming forever harder to prevent leaks of. We've seen it recently with the Nexus 4 and iPad mini and now Samsung and Google's  Nexus 10 tablet has been leaked.

The tablet itself has been rumoured for a long time but this is the first time we've seen a full list of specifications and images of the device.

  • Samsung Exynos 5250 clocked at 1.7 GHz, Dual-core Cortex-A15, Mali-T604 GPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage (other options might be available)
  • 10.1-inch Super AMOLED display, 2560 x 1600 resolution, 299 pixels-per-inch
  • 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, LED flash
  • Front-facing camera
  • NFC
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Dual speakers located on front of device

There is no real surprises in terms of specifications, we've known about the high resolution display for a while, but it will be the first Android device to run an Cortex A15 processor.

According to the source Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is on-board. Not too much is known about this newer version of Android as yet and our discovery has likely been delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

KitGuru says: Judging from this leak, would you be interested in the Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung and Google?

Over the weekend, Sony has decided to pull its latest Android tablet, the Xperia Tablet S from sale in Japan and elsewhere. Originally launched last month with claims of splash-proof operation a manufacturing defect has been found where there is a gap between the display and the body.

It is unknown if the issue affects only a percentage of tablets or most of them. Regardless, existing owners of the Xperia Tablet S are granted free inspections and repairs, if necessary. For now, Sony is advises owners not to test the device's splash proof claims for themselves.

KitGuru says: In a competitive Android tablet market this is bound to not make Sony very happy.

ASUS has always impressed us with their responsive Android tablets; the Transformer Prime was the first non-Google Android device to get an official update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich earlier in the year. While I have been skeptical of ASUS continuing this feat considering their rapidly expanding inventory of Android tablets they seek to prove me wrong.

All of ASUS' Android tablets will receive the Android 4.1 update in time.

ASUS Germany has confirmed that their entire Android tablet range (past and present) will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This will include the Transformer Prime (review), Transformer Pad (review), Transformer Infinity, Eee Pad Transformer and the Eee Pad Slider.

Here is the full statement from ASUS Germany translated via Google:

“We need to deny this clear. Colleagues from the Netherlands have made no statement about TF101/SL101, but merely confirms that a Jelly Bean TF201/TF300/TF700 update be received. The converse, that is not TF101/SL101 JB update will be false and pure speculation. According to current knowledge, and users of older TF101/SL101 enjoy an Android 4.1 update will come.”

KitGuru says: ASUS, you are without doubt our favourite Android tablet manufacturer.

At KitGuru we test quite a wide range of products from numerous manufacturers.  It would be fair to say that we look at many products from Asus but they are usually high-end motherboards or graphics cards designed with overclockers and gamers in mind. Asus have their fingers in many more pies, though, one of which is tablets.

Today we are going to look at the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T which is designed to fill the space in the market between tablets and laptops.  We would say that it’s a little closer to being a tablet rather than a laptop, however, as it features the latest version of Android and is powered by Nvidia's latest Tegra 3 chip.

Features

  • Concentric finished pattern with stylish colours in Royal Blue, Iceberg White and Torch Red
  • Mobile Dock with USB & SD card ports extends battery life up to 15 hours
  • NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 4-Plus-1™ Quad Core CPU with 12-core GPU for lowest power and the highest performance
  • Crystal clear 8MP auto-focus camera with 5-element lens, large F/2.2 aperture & back-illuminated CMOS sensor
  • Superior audio experience with ASUS SonicMaster technology
  • 178° wide viewing angle IPS panel
  • The latest Android™ 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS
  • Pre-loaded exclusive SuperNote app for taking notes using drawings, photos or videos

Google announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean last month at Google I/O and in the keynote that was about an hour long a lot of information was bound to completely surpass us. While those who have been following Android you should already be aware of the key features such as Project Butter and Google Now but at times, it can be the little things that matter the most.

For example you can now send share photos and videos over Android Beam using Bluetooth, additional options for vision impaired users and USB audio support. Looking through the rest of the list there a few other gems, such as the automatic disabling of background data while using a Wi-Fi SSID that has been designated as a mobile hotspot and an easily accessible Windows-like safe mode.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is currently only available on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the now-shipping Google Nexus 7 tablet but will slowly make its way officially (and unofficially) to other devices in the coming months.

You can check out the full change log for Android 4.1 (compared to Android 4.0) right here.

KitGuru says: Android 4.1 should hopefully be the last update for the better part of a year to allow manufacturers to play catch up with software updates.

This week Google CEO Larry Page answered a question about Google's strategy going forward regarding Android tablets. Naturally, this is a topic of high interest to many considering increased retail strength and importance tablets from the green machine are enduring. Page is excited by the current Android tablets already available and believes firmly in Google's decision to pursue a single hub for applications and media with Google Play.

Google CEO, Larry Page, stressed the importance of cheap Android tablets performing well at retail

“I think that we're very excited about tablets. I think, you know, there's a number of Android tablets out there. Obviously, we have strong competition there as well. I think you've seen us really invest substantially in things like Google Play, which really gives you great access to entertainment, media, books and videos and so on, as well as the apps. And we think that's an important component on what we're doing.”

Larry Page also goes on to mention the success of cheaper Android-based tablets such as the Amazon Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the currently unannounced but highly anticipated Nexus tablet from a Google/Asus partnership. He stresses the importance of holding the lower end of the tablet market, while also hinting that Android 5.0 Jellybean may hold some pleasant surprises for cheap Android tablets.

“I think there's also, obviously, there's been a lot of success on some lower-priced tablets that run Android — maybe not the full Google version of Android. But we definitely believe that there's going to be a lot of success at the lower end of the market, as well, with lower-priced products that will be very significant. It's definitely an area we think is quite important and that we're quite focused on.”

Kitguru says: While profit margins may not be as great on cheaper tablets, they will be sure to turn a profit through the Google Play Shop.

Revealed alongside the Padfone last night were a couple of new Transformer series tablets. The tablets in question are the Transformer Pad Infinity 700 series and the Transformer Pad 300 series.

Starting off with the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity 700 series (buzz-word galore) there is a really impressive 1920×1200 Full HD Super IPS+ display complete with Gorilla Glass 2. The 10.1 inch tablet will be powered by either a Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC or a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core chipset; depending if you opt for the LTE version or not.

The new Asus Transformer Pad Infinity 700 series tablet

Much of the rest of the tablet is standard for a high-end tablet with a 8 MP rear camera, 2 MP video-calling camera, 1 GB of RAM and either 16, 32 or 64 GB of on-board storage. Strangely only the Wi-Fi version will have the Tegra 3 chipset, if you want 3G or 4G connectivity you will have to live with the Snapdragon “Krait” chipset.

The Infinity 700 series tablets will have an RF window which allows a GPS and Wi-Fi performance increase, something the Transformer Prime TF201 didn't have and was publicly abused for as a result.

Asus' lower-end Transformer Pad 300 series tablet

Also announced today is the Transformer Pad 300 series, a lower-end offering destined to target some of Acer's Iconia tablets. These “stylish and affordable” Androids will be displayed in either blue, white or red. It will be powered by a Tegra 3 chipset just like the Wi-Fi only version of the Infinity 700 series. There will be 16 GB of on-board storage (it is not clear if there will be SKUs offering more storage) and 1 GB of RAM.

Both tablets will launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich within the next few months.

Kitguru says: Some more brilliant Android tablets straight from Asus' engineers.

Today at Mobile World Congress the mobile world's underdog Huawei announced the MediaPad 10 FHD. The tablet is still fairly early into the production process with the model on show today being handmade.

The tablet has Huawei's home-brewed chipset, the K3V2 quad-core Cortex-A9 chipset inside. This chipset is apparently “more than 49% faster than the world's fastest smartphone” chipset. This comes as quite a surprise as many were expecting a Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset to be included.

The vibrant 10.1 inch Full HD screen in all its glory

The real reason you may buy this tablet is Huawei's reputation for being cheaper while still delivering awesome offerings and the 10.1 inch Full HD 1920×1200 display. All of this is packaged in a shell just 8.8mm thick.

Most other specifications remain unknown at this stage but it is known that it will have a respectable 8 MP rear camera.

Pricing and exact availability information remains unknown but the MediaPad 10 FHD is due to be available by June.

Kitguru says: The original MediaPad was a great tablet (trust me, I reviewed the thing) so I hold high expectations of this as well.

We have been watching many discussion forums in recent months and the overriding consensus seems to be that Apple really have the tablet market wrapped up. We don't just mean in terms of sales, but with the interface and overall product design. While reviews and journalists are only a small part of the overall picture, it certainly looks as if the Apple sales are not just built on hype and fancy advertisements.

Many people seem to be saying the same thing ‘The iPad 2 just works'. So what is wrong with the Android tablets? Personally I quite like the one I have used, the hardware is well designed and I like the operating system. Being totally subjective however I can see how many people feel it looks a lot less polished overall, especially the UI. It is a view shared by many journalists, such as a recent article I read by Walter Pritchard, a City Analyst – in his article called ‘Microsoft could still win the tablet market'.

He said “Anecdotally, we purchased both an iPad 2 and Xoom recently and spent the last four weeks using the device[s] at home. The iPad has lived up to all the hype with the wife and kids nearly fighting over who gets to play with the device. In this short time, the Xoom acquired the name “Dad’s iPad” and sat mostly idle. Our experience suggests it is mostly clunky software and lack of quality control in applications from the Android app store has turned users in our household off. The Xoom was boxed up and sent back to Amazon earlier this week.”

Many have claimed that Apple have been short sighted in their lack of support for Flash content, but surprisingly I found that Youtube worked better on the iPad 2 than on the Samsung Android powered tablet I used for a short time. The Apple system will use the ‘fall back' system for videos and Android uses flash videos. The performance on the Apple tablet was better. Sure you miss some flash based content on websites, but generally I didn't find it was a huge issue.

I am not anti Android as I love my Google powered smartphone. But i can see the big picture.

So have Apple really nailed this market? Have any other manufacturers got a hope in hell of driving away sales over the next 24 months? Amazon would seem to be the favourites, especially considering their track record with the Kindle device, but they are now entering into Apple's home turf with an LCD designed tablet. It is worth remembering that it will be running Android too, so unless they tweak it and customise it, the same criticisms will hold.

KitGuru says: iOS or Android?

As Google's OS platform gathers momentum, Sharp have announced they will be releasing two tablets under the Android banner.

Sharp will be releasing a 5.5 inch and a rather large 10.8 inch tablet at the same time, in December. They will both fall under the horrific ‘Galapagos' name which we would assume is something to do with the islands. It is a name which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue but I guess ‘iPad Killer' might get them into legal trouble.

Sharp are clearly hedging their bets, aiming the 5.5 inch at Apples 7 inch upcoming model and the 10.8 inch at the current market leader. The extra inch should add some noticeable real estate to the screen but it is an unusual move as companies seem to feel the current iPad has proven too big for a large portion of the audience.

Also, it is worth remembering that the Galaxy Tab is an 8 inch design, Samsung claim that extensive market research has confirmed this is the ideal size. We are quite surprised to see Sharp releasing a 5.5 inch version which is only half an inch bigger than the Dell Streak, which we liked, but Dell said wasn't a hot seller.

The Sharp tablets will only have Wi-Fi connectivity with no option for 3G. This should keep down costs, but might alienate a potential audience who want an ‘always on' device.

KitGuru says: This is a rife market for sales and everyone seems to be joining the Android bandwagon. Will they dent iPad sales? some analysts claim that Apple have such a dedicated hardcore audience that sales would not be affected that much. Time will tell.
