Back in February, Blizzard released Overwatch 2’s 9th Season. Alongside the expected updates of a new battle pass and the like, the team teased an upcoming crossover with the popular anime Cowboy Bebop. Going live in just a few days, the team have now fully detailed the collab.

Set to go live on the 12th of March, the Overwatch 2 x Cowboy Bebop crossover appears to be one of the game’s biggest, including 5 new skins, namely:

  • Cassidy as Spike
  • Ashe as Faye
  • Sombra as Ed
  • Mauga as Jet
  • Hammond as Ein

It is worth noting that the Ein skin for Hammond will be a free unlock, while the others will be paid acquisitions.

Speaking of skins, Blizzard have yet to actually show off the character packs, with them having released a teaser trailer in the style of the original anime’s opening instead. That said, the full designs for the crossover will be officially revealed on the 11th of March – one day ahead of its launch.

Unlike many live service games, Overwatch has been relatively conservative with the number of crossovers it has offered over the years. Hopefully this means that the various skins will be worth their – what will probably be a – high asking price.

The mobile gaming market has been an increasing focus for many companies in recent years, in particular when it comes to bringing full-blown console titles to smartphones. Following the likes of Netflix Games, Anime streaming service Crunchyroll has now announced the ‘Crunchyroll Game Vault’.

Making the announcement on their blog, the Crunchyroll team said “Your Crunchyroll membership just leveled up! Announced today, Crunchyroll is officially opening its Crunchyroll Game Vault for Mega and Ultimate Fan members, delivery (sic) unlimited access to a constantly growing library of mobile games, kicking off today with River City Girls, inbento, Wolfstride and more.”

Currently, the service is only live for Android devices, though iOS support is said to be coming “very soon”. As expected, one of the core issues with mobile games (i.e. their overabundance of ads and in-app purchases) won’t be a problem here, with all included titles being feature-complete and free of advertising.

As we have seen with Netflix, Crunchyroll is actually bringing full-blown console games to the service, with a mobile port of the popular side-scrolling arcade-styled beat ‘em up River City Girls being included from launch.

With that, the full list of tiles available currently is as follows:

  • River City Girls
  • One Punch Man: World
  • Street Fighter: Duel
  • Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden
  • Bloodline: The Last Royal Vampire
  • My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero
  • Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump Dimensions
  • Wolfstride
  • Behind the Frame
  • Inbento

While a small list of titles, it is exciting to see that more console games are finding their way onto mobile platforms – even if it is through a subscription service.

Over the past many years, Netflix has adapted a whole bunch of video games into anime, including Castlevania; Dragon’s Dogma; Tekken; and of course Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Now, the media giant has officially announced that they are working on an animated Tomb Raider series.

Releasing a short ‘first look’ teaser trailer, little is known about the adaptation currently, however according to Netflix the anime will feature “the iconic rise of Lara Croft” – suggesting that it will either be an origin story, or at the very least will feature Lara in her earlier years.

Additionally, Croft herself will be voiced by Hayley Atwell, who is known best perhaps for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – though has also appeared in Black Mirror and Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning.

Tomb Raider has been a multi-media franchise for decades now, with the story of Lara Croft being told and retold across 3 films, a 2007 TV show; comics; novels and a whole lot more. It will be interesting to see how this anime is ultimately received when it releases at some point in 2024.

During the heights of its popularity, Naruto was undeniably one of the biggest anime shows of its time, with dozens of games being made based on the IP. The Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games saw particular success, with the latest entry in the series having officially become the best-selling anime game of all time.

As reported by the anime gaming news-focused ‘PS360HD2’ the 2016 fighting game Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 has officially sold over 12 million copies as of December 2022. This makes it the 3rd highest selling fighting game of the last generation (behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate & Mortal Kombat 11).

Even more impressive however is the fact that Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is now also the best selling anime game of all time (with Dragon Ball FighterZ and Xenoverse 2 both falling behind with 10 million copies each).

The Ultimate Ninja Storm series offers an arena-styled fighter with dozens or even hundreds of characters based on the franchise’s 20+ year history. Publisher Bandai Namco announced earlier this year that a new Ultimate Ninja Storm game is in the works.

Dubbed ‘NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS’ the game is said to include a mix of old and new content, seemingly setting the game up as being the definitive Ultimate Ninja Storm experience with over 120 characters. It will be interesting to see how Connections performs when it releases later this year.

While fans of the anime series One Punch Man eagerly await the show’s 3rd season, a number of games based in its universe have been released in the meantime. Adding on to this list is the newly announced free-to-play immersive online action game ‘One Punch Man: World.’

Making the announcement, Crunchyroll Games officially revealed One Punch Man: World – “an immersive online action game that transports players into the universe of One-Punch Man”. Developed by Perfect World Games, One Punch Man: World is available to pre-register right now ahead of its release on PC and mobile devices at some point in the currently unknown future.

The game itself seems to feature a decent amount to do, letting you unlock and level up many familiar faces; enter the Hero Association hub to “meet friends, take on missions, and team up for raids against destructive foes with other players” and “dive into intricate combat and execute perfectly timed dodges, skill combos, and spectacular ultimates, including all-new abilities for beloved characters.”

Many anime-based video game adaptations suffer from repetitive formulas and somewhat uninspired gameplay loops. Hopefully One Punch Man: World proves itself to go beyond this.

In recent years we have seen a push by Sony to adapt many of its well-loved video game IPs into different mediums. Under the banner of PlayStation Productions we have seen the successful release of an Uncharted film as well as the HBO show adaptation of The Last of Us. Last month we reported that Sony has 10 projects in the works under PlayStation Productions, with some even being animated. Now, thanks to one leaker, we know what this project will be.

The anime-focused news account ‘oecuf’ recently took to Twitter to leak two upcoming anime projects, teasing that they are both samurai games – with one being a cross-platform title while the other is a PS exclusive.

Following this, the leaker then confirmed that the two anime projects in the works pertain to FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as well as an anime adaptation of the PlayStation exclusive Ghost of Tsushima.

Very few additional details were shared, aside from the fact that the announcement is supposedly set to take place soon.

Previously, it was confirmed that a Ghost of Tsushima film was in the works. It is currently unknown whether this will be separate from the anime, or if the two projects are actually one and the same. We will have to wait and see, but either way, an anime adaptation of both Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima sounds exciting indeed.

Originally premiering in January, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a took the story from 2017’s genre-bending action-adventure RPG and condensed it into a tight season of anime which manages to capture not only the visual styles of the game, but also the essence of its messaging. Unfortunately for some, the show launched with no English dub. Luckily, the official dub has now been announced, with 2B, 9S and A2’s actors reprising their roles.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official NieR: Automata Animation Project account said: “Presenting the English dub cast of NieR:Automata Ver1.1a! Catch the English dub streaming every Saturday on @Crunchyroll starting March 18th!”

Alongside the announcement a trailer was released, showing the three primary characters being voiced by their video game counterparts – with Kira Buckland back as 2B, Kyle McCarley returning as 9S and Cherami Leigh voicing A2.

While perhaps an unsurprising announcement to some, the status of NieR Ver1.1a’s dub was somewhat up in the air as McCarley was previously removed from a different Crunchyroll project [Mob Psycho 100] due to Union related disagreements. As such, it is exciting to see not only McCarley, but all three main voice actors back for the anime. The English dub for NieR: Automata Ver1.1a premieres on the 18th of March.

Back in February 2022 it was announced that an anime adaptation of the critically acclaimed and much-loved genre-bending Action-JRPG  NieR: Automata was in the works. We later learned that the anime is set to premiere in January 2023. Ahead of this, we have now gotten our first full trailer.

Giving us our best look yet at the upcoming anime, it is clear NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is being made with a lot of care and attention paid towards its source material, with many familiar action sequences and even shot-for-shot recreations of some of the game’s biggest moments. All that said, NieR: Automata’s game director Yoko Taro previously claimed that:

“When I submitted a synopsis for episode 1 that was completely different from the game, it was all rejected. Rereading it now, I think it was all good…!” suggesting that the anime itself might differ quite a bit from the video game – though we know from the trailer that some of the biggest (early) moments will be similar at least.

The adaptation is being produced by Square Enix and Aniplex – the latter of which is owned by Sony and known for producing hundreds of anime from Naruto to Banana Fish. The NieR: Automata anime is actually being developed and animated however by A-1 Pictures – a long-time collaborator responsible for the likes of Blue Exorcist; Sword Art Online; Your Lie in April; Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and (co-producing) Darling in the Franxx – to name but a few.

NieR: Automata is truly an excellent game and so hopefully the anime manages to capture the many levels of depth held within this series. From what we have seen so far, this might indeed be the case. We will have to wait and see, but it is exciting nonetheless.

NieR: Automata was one of the most unique video games to release back in 2017. Directed by Yoko Taro, the open-world action-adventure JRPG featured hauntingly beautiful music, a deep and emotional story, and bombastic action and visuals. Following its success, it was announced that a NieR: Automata anime was in the works. After much waiting, we now have our first look at the anime – as well as its release date.

Coming in January 2023, a teaser trailer for NieR: Automata Ver 1.1A was released, giving us our first proper look at the upcoming anime. As can be seen, the game’s art style, colour palette, and story beats all seem to match that of the original game, seemingly sticking close to the source material.

That being said, Yoko Taro himself took to Twitter following the release of the teaser to reveal “When I submitted a synopsis for episode 1 that was completely different from the game, it was all rejected. Rereading it now, I think it was all good…!” suggesting that the anime itself might differ quite a bit from the video game.

This idea is further felt by the anime’s name, being NieR: Automata 1.1A. With the NieR franchise having always been out-there narratively, it is best not to speculate on the story for the NieR: Automata anime, instead simply looking forward to the journey that the anime will take us on when it arrives in January of next year.

These days it seems as though any and all successful video game IPs will eventually be adapted into a different medium. The latest game to be getting such a treatment is Capcom’s Onimusha franchise, with Netflix now announcing that the series will be getting an anime adaptation.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official Netflix Anime account said “It's your first look at ONIMUSHA, an anime based on CAPCOM's legendary game. Created by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai from Sublimation, with Musashi Miyamoto modeled after Toshiro Mifune.”

Alongside this, the streaming giant released a few key images from the anime, giving us a look at the show’s art style. As can be seen, the anime seems to be using 3D models to emulate traditional 2D animation. This technique has become more and more common over the years, however early reactions to the art style seem to be somewhat negative.

Of course, it is far too early to judge the quality based on a few screenshots, and for fans of the Onimusha franchise, seeing it being revived in any format is a boon for a series which has not seen a new entry since 2006. Hopefully this is the start of an Onimusha revival.

Back in 2020, CD Projekt Red announced that it had teamed up with Netflix and Japanese animation studio, Studio Trigger, to produce an anime set in the Cyberpunk universe. This week, a new trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners dropped and so far, it is shaping up to be fantastic.

After releasing a first look trailer in June, Studio Trigger has produced a new trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, introducing us to all the key characters and giving us an early look at some great action scenes.

Studio Trigger is well known amongst anime fans, producing series like Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia, as well as films like Promare. The studio was founded by former Gainax (known for Evangelion, FLCL and Gurren Lagann) employees in 2011 and has made a name for itself with strong artistic direction and excellent visuals. Trigger's style shines through in both trailers we've had for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and it appears they will be going all in on the darker side of the Cyberpunk universe.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be a standalone, 10-episode story centred around a Street Kid trying to get by in Night City. The series will release on Netflix next month.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Cyberpunk 2077 didn't meet on all expectations, but there is no denying that Night City is a fascinating place with a lot of interesting stories to uncover. Edgerunners is shaping up to be a great showcase of that.

The series will be available on Netflix in September 2022.

Making the announcement, Bandai Namco released a new trailer for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R, revealing that the fighting game is planned to release on the 2nd of September 2022 – a mere three months away.

For the uninitiated, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a long-running Manga and Anime series. First published in 1987, JoJo’s has only continued to grow in popularity, with the Manga itself recently concluding its 8th Part [Jojolion], and the Anime being midway through Part 6 [Stone Ocean].

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is a remaster of the 2013-released PlayStation 3 game. Previously ONLY available on PS3, this remastered release is coming to all modern systems including PS4/5; Xbox One/Series; PC and Nintendo Switch, unshackling the game from its 7th generation roots.

Additionally, the remaster will be coming with notable changes including wholly redone voice acting to align with the official VA’s for the anime (up to JoJo Part 6: Stone Ocean at least). On top of this, the game’s art style has also been re-done slightly to likewise align with the anime’s official colour palette.

By far the biggest change is coming to the core fighting mechanics, with Bandai announcing them to have been “overhauled from the original JOJO battle system with adjustments to the fighting tempo and the addition of hit stops and jump dashes.”

All in all, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R is an exciting re-release, bringing much more with it than your typical remaster. For JoJo fans, this new game is a no-brainer. Even if you are not familiar with the series, All Star Battle’s flashy animations, attacks and attention to detail is impressive and allows for the game to work well independently of the franchise it is based on.

While the mobile market is often forgotten, it continues to chug along as the single biggest video game sector. An example of this can be seen by none other than Genshin Impact, which has now officially made over $3 Billion on mobile alone.

Genshin Impact is one of the biggest gacha games currently available. Having released on the 28th of September 2020, the game saw immediate success, making $100 million in its first two weeks. It seems this rapid rate of revenue did not slow down however as according to Gamesindustry.biz and research firm Sensor Tower, Genshin has made over $3 Billion on mobile alone – averaging $1 Billion every 6 months.

Even more impressive is the fact that this rate of success has not only been maintained but increased over time, with the report stating that Q1 2022 saw Genshin rise by 44% YoY. Genshin on PC and PlayStation has also been performing well, with most recent figures from November 2021  putting total revenue at £3.7 Billion across all platforms within its first year – though 2022 stats are not yet available.

What this means for the future of both Genshin Impact and the market as a whole is unknown. While some have been spelling the end of console gaming ever since the first iPhone released in 2007, the markets have continued to survive and even thrive.

There is certainly enough space in the industry for console and mobile gaming to co-exist, and while for many, mobile gaming is much more accessible, hopefully developers such as MiHoYo do not take the market’s success as an indicator to move entirely away from consoles and PC.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Genshin Impact? What platform did you play it on? Will mobile and console/PC gaming always co-exist? Let us know down below.

2022 marks the 25th anniversary of One Piece, a worldwide smash hit anime and manga series which continues on to this day. Bandai Namco has created many One Piece video games over the years, but the publisher has now announced the series’ most ambitious game yet: One Piece Odyssey.

One Piece Odyssey is described as a turn-based “RPG project filled with the unique elements of adventure from ONE PIECE that has been highly desired by fans”. The game is said to have been in the works for “many years,” with the goal of allowing fans to “truly touch the world of ONE PIECE.”

The plot synopsis reads as follows: “A broken Thousand Sunny… Scattered crew members… Luffy’s missing straw hat…During their voyage, the Straw Hats, led by Monkey D. Luffy are swallowed by a huge storm at sea. They end up on a mysterious island full of nature amidst the storm and become separated from each other. The crew set out on a new adventurous journey filled with wonders of a raging nature, powerful enemies, and strange encounters with island locals. Work together with Luffy and his crew to set sail once again!”

Launching in 2022 for the PS4/5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, One Piece Odyssey appears to have had more time and budget put into its development than many of Bandai’s previous One Piece works. The art style itself may prove to be a controversial choice by some, but early reception to the trailer appears to be optimistic.

With the story, characters and monsters all being designed and written in collaboration with the original One Piece author Eiichiro Oda, One Piece Odyssey is shaping up to be a worthy way to celebrate 25 years of One Piece. Hopefully we see more from the game soon.

Netflix has leaned heavily over the past few years on producing original anime content based on popular video game franchises. Following adaptations of Castlevania, Dragon’s Dogma, and Cuphead to name a few, Netflix has now announced an anime based on the classic fighting franchise Tekken.

Releasing some time in 2022, the official trailer for Tekken: Bloodline has now gone public, offering a look into what might be a promising anime. Based on the trailer, it is clear that the anime is tackling the roots of the franchise by focusing on two of the biggest and most important characters: Jin Kazama and Heihachi Mishima.

The plot of the anime reads as follows: “Jin Kazama learned the family self-defense arts, Kazama-Style Traditional Martial Arts, from his mother at an early age. Even so, he was powerless when a monstrous evil suddenly appeared, destroying everything dear to him, changing his life forever. Angry at himself for being unable to stop it, Jin vowed revenge and sought absolute power to exact it. His quest will lead to the ultimate battle on a global stage — The King of Iron Fist Tournament.”

The animation itself appears to be CGI replicating the look of a classic 2D hand-drawn anime. Whether this will translate nicely, or whether it will ultimately distract is yet to be seen, however the trailer footage suggests that a decent budget was put behind this project.

Netflix has successfully adapted many video games into anime, but has also tarnished just as many. For every Castlevania, there has been a Dragon’s Dogma. Hopefully Tekken: Bloodline ultimately proves to be a solid take on the iconic franchise.

NieR: Automata just celebrated its 5th anniversary, and as part of this, Square Enix held a number of NieR-related announcements. Alongside the fact that the upcoming Babylon’s Fall will be getting NieR: Automata content, a whole NieR: Automata anime has now been announced.

Though there is very little information available right now – aside from a very brief teaser trailer – it has been confirmed that an anime based on NieR: Automata is in development.

Other details which can be gleaned from the teaser is the fact that the ever-popular 2B seemingly remains the primary protagonist of the game. Furthermore, the music used in the video certainly sounds like the stylings of series composer Keiichi Okabe.

All this combined makes for an exciting announcement, and with anime adaptations of video games already proving to be successful and worth their investment, hopefully A-1 Pictures is given as much time and budget as needed. For a taste of what the anime could look like, check out this fan animation.

When Nintendo first launched its Switch handheld-hybrid, the console manufacturer’s desire to ensure that the handheld is seen as a gaming device first meant that third-party media apps such as Netflix and youTube were not available. Slowly they were added to the handheld however, and now, joining the Nintendo eShop is Crunchyroll.

Making the announcement on their blog, Crunchyroll revealed that “There's officially a brand new way to watch Crunchyroll, and it's right in the palm of your hands. The Crunchyroll app is now available on Nintendo Switch, so you can stream all of your favorite anime on TV while your console is docked, or on the go with handheld and tabletop modes.”

For the uninitiated, Crunchyroll is a streaming service similar to the likes of Netflix, however with a focus entirely on Anime content. Unlike Funimation – which is already on Switch – Crunchyroll as a service focuses on offering subtitled anime (as opposed to Funimation’s focus on English dubs).

Being a portable device, the Switch will be able to download Anime episodes for offline viewing. The only catch however is that to do so requires an upgraded membership tier: the Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscribers. These tiers will add the ability to download shows for offline viewing while also “allowing for the same off-network anime access available through mobile devices.”

While this move by Nintendo/Crunchyroll may seem like 5 years too late, Nintendo appears confident in saying that the Switch is only half way through its life cycle. With the console manufacturer wanting to initially focus on games, and with the device still neatly in its prime, the late appearance of these apps start to make a bit more sense – even though they should have just been available from day-one.

My Hero Academia is one of the hottest animes currently, with the franchise seeing more than 100 episodes released on TV, and 3 theatrical international film releases. The IP is now attempting to find success in the free-to-play market, as a My Hero Academia battle royale has now been announced.

As reported by Comicbook.com, a new My Hero Academia game is on its way. While the previous two titles were traditional arena fighters, this latest game will be a free-to-play battle royale game.

Titled My Hero Academia Ultra Rumble, the game is a 24 player team based battle royale (with 8 teams of 3) in which teammates must combine their different and unique abilities to win the game. Along the way, players can pick up skill cards, improving the character’s abilities and techniques.

So far, 12 characters have been announced, though more will reportedly be available. These 12 characters are: Midoriya, Bakugo, Todoroki, Asui, Uraraka, All Might, Cementoss, Mt. Lady, Shigaraki, Dabi, Toga, and Mr. Compress.

Alongside the announcement, Bandai Namco showed off some gameplay,  revealing what looks like a very Bandai Namco-quality title – though it does admittedly look quite fun. Currently, no release date has been announced, but a Japan-only beta test will be going live sometime in early February.

My Hero Academia Ultra Rumble will be coming to PlayStation 4; Xbox One; Nintendo Switch; and PC via Steam.

While Shenmue 3 didn't exactly live up to expectations, Yu Suzuke's grand story will soon be told through another medium. Back in 2020, a Shenmue anime was announced to be in the works and now, it will be coming to Crunchyroll next year.

Shenmue: The Animation is an anime series based on Shenmue 1 and 2, with Yu Suzuki working with the writers to incorporate previously scrapped story elements. The series is being produced by Crunchyroll and Adult Swim, so it will air on Toonami in the US, and it will be available via streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide.

This week, the first trailer for the series released, revealing the 2022 release date. The series will run for 13 episodes, covering events from the first two Shenmue games, while expanding the story in certain areas. One Punch Man director, Chikara Sakurai, is also directing the series.

That is all we know for now, but we expect to hear more early next year. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The first two Shenmue games are very dated at this point, so being able to experience the story in a new form, like an anime, seems like a good idea. Will any of you be watching this next year?

The first season of Netflix’s The Witcher was met with a great deal of enthusiasm, with the show becoming one of the streaming service’s biggest ever. It was therefore not surprising to see a season 2 confirmed. Ahead of this second season however, it has also been announced that season 3 is on the way.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Witcher page said “Toss a coin to our growing Witcher universe! We can officially announce The Witcher Season 3, along with a second anime feature film, and a new Kids and Family series set in the world of The Witcher.”

While the announcement of a season 3 came as no surprise, it is interesting to see the anime getting a second entry. Reception was positive, and it's good to see that viewership must have been equally as positive for Netflix to order a second movie.

What is perhaps the most curious announcement was the fact that a children's show is in production. The world of the Witcher is famously bleak, depressing and bloody, and so making a child-appropriate show is certainly a choice. Of course, The Witcher is a hot property right now, and so it makes sense that Netflix would want to capitalise on it. Still, it will be interesting to see the final result of this children’s show.

Sony has been investing heavily in anime over the past few years. Following the acquisition of FUNimation back in 2017, the company recently completed its acquisition of rivalling anime streaming service Crunchyroll for $1.175 Billion. It seems the company is looking to consolidate its products, including Crunchyroll with its PlayStation Plus service.

PlayStation Plus is the company’s online subscription service which lets players access online games, backup save data to the cloud, and obtain a monthly list of new titles. It seems the service may be boosted to include more benefits soon.

As reported by EuroGamer, “There are also plans to potentially offer Crunchyroll as part of a more expensive premium PlayStation Plus offering”. Currently Crunchyroll Premium costs £6.50 a month, or £79.99 a year (Mega Fan). PlayStation Plus meanwhile costs £6.99 a month, or £49.99 a year.

Combining the two services, even for a slight fee increase could not only benefit PlayStation players but anime fans too, and could help to shift the tides in the conversation between Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus & Now.

PlayStation looks to be going all in on subscriptions, with PS5 players receiving 6 months of Apple TV+ for free, and now this potential package. It will be interesting to see what the company’s long term plan is.

The Witcher is coming back to Netflix with an even bigger presence. Besides announcing the second season of the series, scheduled to launch on December 17th, fans of the franchise are also getting an anime film on August 23rd. Additionally, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive new free DLCs with items inspired by the Netflix series.

The Witcher's second season, anime movie, and new DLCs were announced during WitcherCon, a Witcher-focused conference held from July 9th to July 10th.

The Witcher: Season 2 is coming out on December 17th and will consist of 8 episodes, from which we already know the name of 7. The new season will include new characters, but familiar faces like Geralt, Ciri, Jaskier, and Yennefer are also returning. As per the trailer, it looks like we will witness Geralt training Ciri in Kaer Morhen and beyond. Other witchers are also present, including Vesemir, Geralt's mentor. Here's the list of episodes:

  1. A Grain of Truth
  2. Kaer Morhen
  3. What is Lost
  4. Redanian Intelligence
  5. Turn Your Back
  6. Dear Friend
  7. Voleth Meir
  8. [Redacted]

While we wait for the second season of The Witcher's Netflix series, we can take a look at The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. This anime film coming on August 23rd will be produced by Studio Mir, the same studio responsible for Avatar: The Legend of Korra and Dota: Dragon's Blood. The story will revolve around a young Vesemir.

Besides the new season and movie, CD Projekt Red will launch new DLC content based on the series. These will be small, free DLCs, rather than expansions like Hearts of Stone or Blood of Wine. .

Demon Slayer is currently one of the hottest media properties to come out of Japan. As with many popular anime releases, Demon Slayer was announced to be getting a video game adaptation. A first look at the game has now been shown off, revealing interesting comparisons to other titles.

As part of an online anniversary event for the Demon Slayer anime, over 5 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage was shown off and published online of the upcoming Demon Slayer video game.

The game is being developed by CyberConnect2, who are known best perhaps for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, as well as the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series of games. Just like the Storm series, this Demon Slayer game is an arena fighter with seemingly very similar mechanics and visual stylings.

Of the many anime video game adaptations, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series is one of the most beloved, and so translating the newest hot anime property into a game with similar stylings makes sense. Other anime franchises have gone a similar route, though to much lesser success (though those were not developed by CyberConnect2).

The Demon Slayer video game is slated to release sometime in 2021 in Japan for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a Western release presumably also planned – though there has been no official confirmation just yet.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the streaming service revealed that “The most iconic heroine in video games is jumping to animation! Tomb Raider is a new anime series from @Legendary following Lara Croft after the events of the video-game reboot trilogy.”

Though little else is known about the anime currently, it is certainly interesting to see Netflix pick up where the most recent video game trilogy ended with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It’ll be curious to see whether the character designs will remain faithful to the games, and whether Lara’s voice actor – Camilla Luddington – will reprise her role as the titular character.

The rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy offered an interesting take on the world of Tomb Raider and resonated with many fans of the iconic video game franchise. Unfortunately the latter entries seemingly disappointed Square Enix somewhat when it came to salesSince its release in 2018, there has yet to be an announcement for a new entry in the Tomb Raider series. As such, it is encouraging to see Lara’s story continue, even if it isn’t in video game form.

Ever since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, many owners have been disappointed at the fact that the hybrid console offers very little in the way of video streaming apps. While all other consoles (and even older Nintendo systems) offered applications such as Amazon Prime and Netflix, the Switch has seen almost none of that. This might finally change however, as Funimation appears to be teasing a Nintendo Switch app.

Taking to Twitter, the Funimation account released a short clip of a Nintendo Switch with purple Joy-Cons (the primary colour used by Funimation) with the caption “oh, hello” suggesting that an app for the streaming service could be on its way soon.

Funimation is a streaming service owned by Sony which distributes primarily english dubbed anime. It is one of the biggest Western anime streaming services, and so it makes sense that it should come to the console – though Nintnedo has until now been very strict with allowing non-gaming apps on its latest console.

Currently, only two major streaming services are available on the Switch, Hulu and YouTube.  With this latest teaser by Funimation however, hopefully Nintendo is widening the floodgates a little when it comes to allowing apps on the hybrid system.

Being both handheld and dockable, the Switch would serve as a great streaming device, and so hopefully following on from Funimation, other services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ can find their way onto the console. Time will tell.

The past few years have seen a large resurgence in the number of high quality video game adaptations being produced. Netflix is one such production company, creating not only a Castlevania anime, but The Witcher (though it is technically based on the books), a Splinter Cell series, and a Beyond Good & Evil film. One other adaptation is that of Dragon’s Dogma. Releasing next month, Netflix have now shown off the anime’s first trailer.

The description for the anime reads as follows: “After losing his home to a dragon, Ethan sets out to hunt it down once and for all. A pawn appears by his side and serves to protect his life. But the dangers that lie in wait for Ethan are beyond their imaginations, for when you fight a monster… you just may become one too.”

Dragon’s Dogma was a hack n’ slash RPG published in 2012 by Capcom. The game was known best for being directed by Hideaki Itsuno, who was also responsible for directing many of the Devil May Cry games. Because of this, Dragon’s Dogma featured much more satisfying combat than that which is typically observed in an RPG. For that reason, the game gained somewhat of a cult following.

While Dragon’s Dogma has yet to receive a sequel, its fans and Itsuno himself have both expressed their desires to see a sequel being made. While the Netflix Adaptation may not be able to achieve that, it certainly brings the much-loved but underappreciated series a new wave of attention – possibly even paving the way for a sequel. Dragon’s Dogma launches on Netflix on the 17th of September.

Though film and TV adaptations of video games are certainly nothing new, it seems as though 2020 will see more projects come to light than usual. A Diablo TV show featuring an anime art style, and an Overwatch animated series have both been confirmed to be in development thanks to the LinkedIn profile of Activision Blizzard’s president of film and TV.

Nick Van Dyk is the current President of the film and TV division of Activision Blizzard. In his LinkedIn profile, he claims to be the “Executive producer of Diablo, a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s IP, rendered in anime style,” with the show currently being “in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix.”

Though talks of a Netflix Diablo can be found as far back as September 2018, it was never confirmed and was left largely forgotten until now. This won’t be the first time that Netflix has produced anime adaptations of popular video games. A Castlevania anime will soon be seeing its 3rd season hit the service, and a Devil May Cry anime adaptation is currently in the works.

The other show, which features far fewer details, is the Overwatch animated series. According to Van Dyk, it’ll be “an animated series based [sic] Blizzard's Overwatch franchise”. Little more is known about it, aside from the fact that it won’t be developed in-house due to Van Dyk’s use of “developed and sold” in reference to the series.

Overwatch has in the past released CG animated shorts which have fleshed out the characters and world of Overwatch. The game doesn’t feature a story mode however, and so an animated series based on the game is likely to be welcomed by fans of the franchise.

It is unknown when these shows are set to be announced or released, but regardless it’s nice to know that fans who are urging for more Diablo and Overwatch content – while waiting for Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 – will have their wishes granted.

KitGuru says: Are you looking forward to these TV shows? What other Activision Blizzard properties would you like to see receive adaptations? Do you generally enjoy transmedia franchises? Let us know down below.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the latest video game in the long running anime series. Having released on the 16th of January in Japan, and the 17th worldwide, the game’s publisher, Bandai Namco, have now confirmed that the action RPG has sold over 1.5 million copies in its first week, keeping the game’s success in line with other titles in the series.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot received mixed reviews from critics, with some citing the game’s “repetitive combat encounters and dull side quests” as a main cause for pause. Despite this, fan reception to the game was much more positive. This follows a similar pattern to 2015’s Dragon Ball Xenoverse, which saw a slight disparity between critic and fan reception. Dragon Ball Xenoverse shipped over 1.5 million copies in its first few weeks on the market. With Xenoverse 2’s release in 2016, the duology collectively sold over 10 million copies.

The other major Dragon Ball title released in recent years is 2018’s Dragon Ball FighterZ. This 2D fighting game was received incredibly well by both fans and critics alike, with many praising its accurate representation of anime art styles and motion. Dragon Ball FighterZ became the fastest selling title in the Dragon Ball universe, with over 2 million copies sold in its first week. Most recent figures put the game’s total sales at 4 million copies, though with the title’s continued support through events such as Evo, the game is likely to continue to flourish.

In comparison to FighterZ, Kakarot may not have been able to compete neither sales wise nor reception wise, but if the game continues on its currently trajectory, then in a similar fashion to the Xenoverse series, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is set to become a very successful game.

Though it's been almost 5 years since The Witcher 3 released, and over 20 since the Witcher saga concluded in the novels, Geralt of Rivia appears to be more popular than ever. With the Netflix show being watched by over 76 million households, and a resurgent player base of The Witcher 3, it’s clear that fans want more from the Witcher universe. Even so the recent announcement made by Netflix, that a Witcher anime is on the way, was still an unexpected one. While few details are known, the anime will see the likes of Lauren S. Hissrich and Beau DeMayo involved in its creation.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Netflix stated that “[t]he rumors are true, a new Witcher story is in the works!” Set to be an anime film titled ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’, it’ll “take us back to a new threat facing the Continent.” It is currently unknown whether the anime will feature the voice talents of Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and the rest of the cast from the live-action adaptation, or even if the anime is set in the same canon as the show.

It has been confirmed however that Lauren S. Hissrich (The Witcher’s creator and showrunner) and Beau DeMayo (writer for The Witcher) will be involved. Furthermore it was announced that ‘Studio Mir’ will be involved. Studio Mir is known best for being the animation studio behind the award-winning Legend of Korra series.

Commenting on the announcement, Hissrich said: “It's a big day here in #TheWitcher world — and I've been keeping this one secret for over a year!” This suggests that perhaps The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is further along in production than expected. Regardless, with a second season of The Witcher on the way, and now an anime film being announced, it’s a good time to be a fan of Geralt of Rivia.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this announcement? Are you surprised to see an anime adaptation in the works? Would you like to see it be connected to Netflix’s The Witcher, or should it remain separate? Let us know down below.
