World famous hacktivist group Anonymous have taken down the CIA website over the weekend due to an organised DDos attack.

Anonymous also targeted the FBI recently and a CIA representative said “We are aware of the problems accessing our Web site, and are working to resolve them.” The website was restored on Saturday. Anonymous spent some time attacking police and government servers in Alabama, where they are said to have stolen private information on 46,000 Alabama residents.

Anonymous said they were able to get names, dates of birth, criminal records and even license plate numbers and social security numbers “because of your police being lazy when it comes to data security.” They added “This release is only meant to show the Citizens of the state of Alabama the amount of incompetence that is taking place within the state government…We mean no harm by releasing this redacted information. This data was not securely segregated from the Internet, nor was it properly encrypted.”

Kitguru says: Anonymous are targeting law enforcement and other government agencies on Fridays and there will probably be more attacks in the coming weeks.

High profile hackers Anonymous, who targeted Sony in recent months are under attack by Turkish authorities. Police have arrested 32 people allegedly connected to the group, according to a report by Anatolia, a Turkish news agency.

The suspects have apparently been taken into custody after a series of raids in properties across the Turkish provinces.

Anonymous have been in the limelight a lot recently after attacks on Sony's Network and the Turkish telecommunications watchdog, BTK. They are also linked to attacks on Recep Tayyip Erdogan who is seeking re-election in the country.

Turkey authorities had a plan to initiate internet content filters from August 22nd and street protests were planned against it. Anonymous issued a statement about this.

“These acts of censorship are inexcusable. The internet is a platform for freedom, a place where anyone and everyone can come together, discuss topics, and share information, without the fear of government interference. We, Anonymous, will not stand by and let this go unnoticed. We will fight with the Turkish people against their government's rain of censorship.”

These latest arrests follow on from the previous Spanish arrests, targeting 3 individuals in the country who were apparently associated with the hacking group. Anonymous are not ending their protests however, claiming that arrests will not halt their plans, as they have no leaders and operate from all over the world. They say “DDoSing is an act of peaceful protest on the Internet. The activity is no different than sitting peacefully in front of a shop denying entry. Just as is the case with traditional forms of protest.”

KitGuru says: Will this slow down the attacks on various authorities?

Anonymous, renowned hacktivist group have announced a war against Sony, and they appear to have struck the first blow already. They announced on Sunday that Sony's legal actions against hacker Geohot and their other corporate behaviours “have been deemed an unforgivable offense against free speech and internet freedom.”

They have even posted a video on YouTube targeting the tech company. They say “You will feel the wrath of Anonymous. Your official websites will be taken offline including the PlayStation Store. These attacks will continue until we are completely satisfied with the outcome.”

It isn't all false bravado either, because Sony's Playstation.com and Sony.com websites suffered some inaccessibility and downtime. Other reports are showing that Sony's Playstation Network for the Playstation 3 is suffering from outages and lag. Anonymous issued a statement on their website highlighting that

“you have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work. You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target those who seek this information. In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information. ”

Sony have pursued hacker Geohot (George Hotz) for allegedly violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and for contributing to copyright infringement. He posted the rootkey for the Playstation 3 online in January. This lets people use homebrew software on their Playstation 3 machines, and they can also play pirated games.

Geohot has said he didn't do it to let people play pirated games, his argument was that consumers who buy the hardware should be allowed to tinker with any piece of equipment they like, including the Playstation 3.

KitGuru says: Have anonymous the power to really hurt Sony? Time will tell.

Apple are living dangerously, by recently banning the Wikileaks application from their store. Hacker group ‘Anonymous' are currently targeting any company who are cutting support from Wikileaks, and we would expect Apple to be next on their hitlist.

Apple have banned the iPhone and iPad application designed to give people access to the wealth of leaked information which has been hitting the news in every country in recent weeks. Apple have removed the Wikileaks application because it has violated their developer guidelines.

“Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or targeted group in harm’s way,” said Apple.

Hacker group Anonymous have already attacked Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Bank Of America for cutting support to Wikileaks on various levels, so there is a good chance that Apple might be painting a crosshair on their forehead.

As yet however, Wikileaks have yet to be charged for commiting any crime so it seems hard justice for all these companies to be cutting support for them.

KitGuru says: Is this fair or unjust? if you have a view, please let us know.
