According to a report on AppleInsider, Apple are going to merge their iOS and OS X operating systems into a ‘unifed' platform for applications and cloud services. This could happen next year with the MacBook Air according to the sourced information.

Peter Misek who works for Jefferies & Co wrote to investors yesterday claiming that he sees a transition possible with a new MacBook Air running the custom designed, next generation A6 processor.

He said “We believe Apple is ready to start sampling the A6 quad-core app processor and will be the first to such multi-device platform capable of PC-like strength.”

Our preliminary view is that Apple can use a 32-bit ARM architecture to address the vast majority of the OS X ecosystem's needs in 2012-13 except for high-end professional devices. When 64-bit ARM is available in 2016, we believe Apple will have a single OS and hardware architecture.”

The rumours of Apple using ARM architecture in future system designs has been circulating now for months. Analysts feel that Apple may use them when 64 bit versions are available by the end of 2012, or early 2013.

Misek feels that Apple will continue to use Intel designs in the MacBook Pro and Mac desktop range for 64 bit support and compatibility.

Kitguru says: Another Apple rumour to add to the ever growing list.
