Late yesterday there were reports that Apple were set to release the iPad 3 as early as March, but with a smaller dock connector. This would lead to issues with a plethora of existing products. I decided to try and get confirmation from a source I have, close to Apple.

Japanese blog site Macotakara are citing a ‘reliable Asian source' who says that the next generation tablet is being rushed into production soon our sources in Taipei have not heard about a new connector dock being incorporated into the iPad 3.

Rumors circulated that the new dock will be smaller, but will have the same number of pins as the current iPad. This would obviously effect all products that slot into this port, including chargers and other peripherals.

Our source in Taipei says the dock connector has not been listed as having changed in size and that it would be a bad move for Apple to change this as many customers might halt on a purchase if they had to replace all their partnering devices.

Smaller iPad dock connector planned? our sources say no.

The release date does seem set for March 2012, and there is still an ongoing discussion on whether Apple will release the iPad 3 with the 2048×1536 Retina display. This would be a huge selling point for Apple, and we know that they have already worked out a deal for the new panels.

Will Apple change the dock size? Obviously nothing is confirmed, especially by Apple, but our sources seem to know nothing about the move and it would seem unlikely for Apple as it could alienate a huge portion of the audience who rely on the connector to work with various peripherals.

Kitguru says: We do hope the iPad 3 makes it out of the gate with the super high resolution screen. We wonder how it will affect the price points however.

The upcoming Apple iPad 3 is set to have a massively upgraded battery, but will cost Apple between 20-30% more for each unit, according to information posted on Cens.com.

Our man in Taipei, Yong Lei has been prying for information about this, but has yet to hear back anything, or even semi confirmed information from his sources. The details on Cens.com say that the battery pack for the iPad 3 will be produced on masse early next year, and has been designed to be both thinner and lighter with a longer service life than the current version in the iPad 2.

We would have expected this however, as the iPad 3 is set to have some upgrades (to graphics power and screen), which could reduce battery life. With the new upgrade we would hope that iPad 3 users will experience the same 10 hour operation time before a recharge. We aren't sure how much this will add to the overall cost of the iPad 3, but we had expected the price to rise regardless, especially with the new super high resolution screen. Perhaps $50-75 more to the end user for each tablet.

The capable iPad 2 battery - will be changed for the upcoming V3 tablet.

The news site adds “Therefore, iPad 3 battery module will call for advanced technologies, selling for a higher price to benefit Simplo and Dynapack for sure, especially when the two companies have had their battery packs pass the IEEE 1625 test as the only two battery makers in Taiwan for the moment.

Riding on increasing sales of iPad 2, institutional investors noted, both Simplo and Dynapack will see their sales revenues for the third quarter of this year surge 10-15% from a quarter earlier. With iPad 3 battery packs said to be delivered starting in the fourth quarter, the two companies are likely to record new highs in revenues for the quarter.”

Kitguru says: Hanging fire on a tablet purchase until the iPad 3? it seems a dramatic upgrade to the previous and current model.

It seems too soon for us, especially going on information from our own sources in Taipei, but rumours are still circulating that Apple may release the iPad 3, as soon as October this year. While the iPad 2 sales continue to boom, many people are waiting on the next version as it may very well be supplied with a super high resolution screen with a staggering 2048×1536 resolution.

While the release date is still very much open for debate, the high resolution screen rumours continue – with Digitimes and research firm IDC publishing that they both have heard the same reports.

We do question the validity of the October launch date however, because it would be a commercial disaster for Apple who are still having problems keeping up with demand for the current iPad 2. Going on figures, it looks as if Apple may ship between 12 and 14 million tablets in Q3, up from around 8 million in Q2. Demand is that high that Digitimes have reported that Apple are holding onto stocks of components to ensure a constant production this year.

While Apple are aware of the potential demand for the iPad 3, our own sources are indicating a launch in Q2 2012 and no earlier. As always Apple have not commented on release dates and no official sources have confirmed the upcoming inclusion of a high resolution panel either. Information will continue to be leaked until launch date, and as this is an Apple product, everyone will have an opinion.

Other tablet makers face a slightly different problem, not on when to release their next product to maximise sales, but more if they can get any sales at all from their current version. Apple's dominance in this market is immense.

Last night I spoke with an insider in Taipei who claims that Apple are set to adopt a new high resolution screen for the upcoming iPad 3. Those people who have skipped over on the iPad 2 release will be happy to hear the latest news. Of course, I can't claim this is 100% the case, but the source is very reliable.

The iPad 3 was heralded to be released later this year, but it doesn't look until it will hit retail until the summer of next year. The production will start Q1 if the timeline we have been shown stays true. While the iPad 3 will bring other improvements to the successful range for Apple, the biggest talking point has been the updated screen.

Earlier reports indicated that the iPad 3 would launch end of 2010 with a screen resolution 6 times higher than the iPad 2. While this is not likely to happen we have been told that a new super high resolution screen with a 2048×1536 resolution is most likely with productions of the screen already in the making. Other rumors circulating are that Apple are looking at a 3D screen, but from what we hear, this is not accurate.

A screen with this resolution will greatly enhance the iPad's overall viewing quality, with four times the pixels on offer. Obviously this will cause a substantial hit on the video rendering performance for gaming, so Apple are looking at various options, to ensure that the performance is still strong. Getting the balancing act between performance and battery life is tricky and this is something they are looking into in great detail right now.

The iPad 2 was due to get a higher resolution screen, but the time frame and production issues caused them to force a cancellation. It hasn't affected sales in the least, with the iPad 2 flying off the shelves. When the iPad 3 is released however with the new high resolution panel we can imagine that ebay will be flooded with cheap iPad's and iPad 2's.

Kitguru says: Would you jump on board the Apple train for a tablet panel with this resolution?
