Research group NPD have posted the latest domestic sales data from America which show the Macintosh range of computers have experienced 13 percent growth year over year in the first 2 months of Q4. This number is expected to increase in December as people rush for a new purchase and gifts for family members.

Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray said the increase will grow in December saying the numbers were ‘soft' compared to this months expected increase. These figures are only based on the U.S. market however and there are few indications of the worldwide status.

The NPD data shows that desktop units are up 5 percent year over year in the month of November, while notebooks are up 9 percent from 2010.

Munster has issued his projection which details Macintosh sales between 5.1 and 5.3 million in the Q4, which could be a new record for Apple. Munster wrote “We believe international Mac sales are likely growing faster than domestic Mac units (and NPD does not track international Mac sales). Net-net, we are maintaining our range of 5.1m-5.3m, or 23%-28% (year over year) growth.”

Kitguru says: iPod sales are down 14 percent year over year, according to the NPD data. More people are using their phones now for MP3 playback, limiting the number of devices they have to carry around with them.
