It has been a while since Apple last gave a substantial update to Apple Arcade's library. That is finally changing this week, with 20 new games heading to the service, including fan favourites like Limbo and Temple Run to completely new titles, including a sequel to What the Golf? and a new TMNT game.

Apple has announced 20 new titles coming to its game subscription service. That includes Cityscapes: Sim Builder, TMNT Splintered Fate, Disney SpellStruck, and “WHAT THE CAR?”, four new games that will only be available on Apple Arcade. Besides those, Apple Arcade is also adding many classic games for subscribers to enjoy.

Focusing on the new games, let's start with TMNT Splintered Fate. The plot revolves around the disappearance of their mentor Splinter and a mysterious attack on the brothers. Players can join Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael in a co-op roguelike adventure where they combine their attacks with randomized power-ups. Players will search for clues in New York City with the help of familiar allies such as April, Metalhead, and Casey Jones.

Then, there's Disney SpellStruck, a new word game set in the Isles of Tiles developed with the co-creator of Words with Friends, featuring Disney and Pixar characters such as Mickey Mouse, Tiana, and Stitch. Players can challenge themselves with crossword-style games, play with friends in online versus mode, complete daily challenges, and compete for the top spot on leaderboards.

As for “WHAT THE CAR?”, it's a comedic racing game developed by indie game developers known for their quirky titles. Players control an unconventional race car that changes features like legs and wings. The game features physics-based gameplay, making each race a fun adventure with unexpected twists and turns.

Lastly, Cityscapes: Sim Builder is a new mobile game where players become the mayor and create a sustainable city. Developed by veteran sim builders, players must carefully balance the needs of citizens while considering the impact of industry and transportation on the environment.

In addition to the new games, more titles are coming to the subscription service. The list below includes all 16 games coming to Apple Arcade. All of them are “+” versions, meaning that microtransactions and ads have been removed:

  • Chess Universe+
  • Disney Colouring World+
  • Disney Getaway Blast+
  • Farming Simulator 20+
  • Getting Over It+
  • Hill Climb Racing+
  • Iron Marines+
  • Kingdom Two Crowns+
  • Limbo+
  • My Town Home: Family Games+
  • Octodad: Dadliest Catch+
  • PPKP+
  • Snake.io+
  • Temple Run+
  • Time Locker+
  • Very Little Nightmares+

Apple Arcade is available for £4.99 monthly with a one-month free trial. Arcade Originals can be played across Apple devices, while App Store Greats are only available for iPhone and iPad. An Apple Arcade subscription provides a family of up to six members with unlimited access to all games in the catalogue.

In recent years we have seen the arcade-style beat ‘em up genre revived, with many franchises (old and new) tackling the genre. One of the newest breakout hits was 2019’s River City Girls. Ahead of the release of its sequel, the team at WayFroward has now revealed that River City Girls 2 will offer 4-player co-op.

Making the announcement via a newly-released Villains trailer, the team at WayForward said “The stakes are higher and streets are meaner in the hot-blooded beat-'em-up sequel, River City Girls 2! The River City series' most notorious villain, crime lord Sabu, is back, and – along with his adopted son Ken and daughter Sabuko – he's gonna make life miserable for Misako, Kyoko, and their allies! Fortunately, the heroes have one advantage Sabu didn't count on…”

That advantage being the fact that River City Girls 2 will feature double the player count, allowing up to 4-player co-op – making for a much more authentic arcade-like experience. The original River City Girls only offered two-player co-op allowing you and a friend to play as either Kyoko or Misako. These two will of course be returning for the sequel, but will now be joined by 4 more characters for a total of 6 playable protagonists (though only 4 can be used at any given time).

Alongside Kyoko and Misako, River City Girls 2 will include Kunio, Riki, Marian and Provie – all of which featured in previous entries in the long-running River City franchise. River City Girls was a fun and well-loved arcade-style beat 'em up. Hopefully with River City Girls 2, bigger equals better.

If you have played those arcade machines with various SNK games, there's a good chance you've tried a Fatal Fury game. The parent series of King Of Fighters has existed for over 30 years, with the latest entry to the franchise being Garou: Mark of The Wolves, which released 23 years ago. Now, SNK has decided to revive the franchise, confirming a new title has been greenlit.

Back in 1991, SNK launched its first fighting game. Named Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, this title was then divided into the Fatal Fury and King Of Fighters series. While KOF has achieved incredible success in the fighting game community, Fatal Fury ended up being an underdog, ending with Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Even so, Garou became like a bastion to the series, with a modding community playing it on emulators for almost two decades, which resulted in SNK relaunching the title to various platforms.

Now, SNK has greenlit a new entry to the Fatal Fury/Garou series. Alongside the announcement, the publisher revealed an artwork of Rock Howard, the adoptive son of Teddy Bogard, the series protagonist who killed Geese Howard, Rock's biological father. Rock debuted in the Fatal Fury series in 1999, when Garou Mark of the Wolves was released for arcade platforms.

Alongside the new Fatal Fury title, SNK is also launching a new team of DLC characters for KOF XV, including Orochi Yashiro, Orochi Shermie, and Orochi Chris from KOF 97 and Haohmaru, Nakoruru, and Darli Dagger from Samurai Shodown. Moreover, SNK revealed Samurai Shodown will receive a rollback netcode update to improve the online experience.

There was once a time when things such as video game release dates were simply shared with the world. Over time however, the video games industry has focused on amping up the excitement, and so now, PlatinumGames has announced a stream in which they will announce the release date for their next game.

Making the pre-announcement on Twitter, PlatinumGames said “We've kept you waiting, but our previously postponed SOL CRESTA Release Date Forum stream is ready to launch! Join us on Saturday, January 22nd from 7PM PST/10PM EST [the 23rd at 3am UK time]. The day of decision is upon us! Viewer giveaways too! DON'T MISS IT!”

For the uninitiated, Sol Cresta is a sequel to Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta – two games which were released all the way back in 1980 and 1985 respectively. Sol Cresta is a free-form docking and shooting game “in which you pilot the cutting-edge docking fighter Yamato and initiate Operation: Sol Cresta to take back the solar system from the evil Mega Zohar army.”

Serving as an official sequel to the 1980s arcade shooters, PlatinumGames has a lot to live up to. The studio is not unfamiliar with such gameplay however, as the genre-bending NieR: Automata features vertically scrolling shooter sections.

If Sol Cresta feels as good as those moments in Automata did, then fans can expect a lot from the upcoming game. Speaking of upcoming, despite the game’s original announcement on the 1st of April 2021, Sol Cresta is real, and in just a few short days, we will know exactly when the game will launch. More details on Sol Cresta can be found HERE and HERE.

The Antstream Arcade has been available for a long time now, offering over a thousand retro titles available through cloud streaming. The service quietly joined the Epic Games Store last week, offering a free welcome pack for all users.

For one reason or another, neither Antstream or Epic Games sent out a press release or updated their news sections with this announcement. Fortunately, PCGamer spotted it, which helped spread the word.

For those who don't know, Antstream Arcade is a cloud gaming platform focusing on bringing retro games to a wide range of devices, including PC. The idea is that using Antstream, you don't have to tinker with emulators or hunt down ROMs, and can instead jump right in to playing with a catalogue of over 1000 retro titles. You'll find games from the arcade era, as well as the early days of PC and console gaming.

The free welcome pack on the Epic Games Store is available for new Antstream players until Thursday this week, offering 1090 gems to use to acquire games. Most titles cost 30 gems per play, so you'll be able to at least try out a good number of titles. You also have the option of paying $39.99 for a 1-year subscription to the service.

Antstream Arcade is supposed to be coming to Steam at some point too, as the service was listed on the store over the Summer. Currently, it is still listed as ‘Coming Soon', indicating it might be a timed exclusive to the Epic Games Store.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you tried Antstream before for your retro gaming fix?

Apple is believed to be working on a game controller for the 2020 Apple TV to promote its Arcade gaming service. The upcoming Apple TV is expected to feature an A12X Bionic processor, which should provide the necessary levels of performance for smooth gaming.

The gaming industry has a worldwide estimated annual revenue of almost $200 billion per year, so it's only natural for companies like Apple to want a slice of the action. Apple announced its Arcade gaming subscription service last year, and to further support gaming on its devices it is believed that Apple is developing a game controller to be used with its Apple TV.

According to the Twitter user Jioriku, the controller could be released during Apple's WWDC event later today, adding that the Apple TV 6 is an “absolute powerhouse of a machine” with its A12X Bionic chip. Despite using the A12X-chip, it seems like Apple is sticking to its previous design of the small “black box everyone had come to love”.

Over the years, the Virtual Console has become a staple part of Nintendo's software lineup. We are still eagerly awaiting its arrival on the Nintendo Switch but in the meantime, we will be able to enjoy a new feature known as ‘Arcade Archives', bringing classic Nintendo arcade games to the console.

During a Nintendo Direct stream last night, Nintendo confirmed several arcade games coming to the Switch, including: Vs. Pinball, Vs. Clu Clu Land, VS. Balloon Fight, Vs. Ice Climber and of course Vs. Super Mario Bros.

Each of these games will take advantage of the Joy-Cons. If you want to play some local co-op, you can hand one of the Joy-Cons to a friend for multiplayer.

The Arcade Archives are launching on the 27th of September, though Nintendo didn't share pricing information.

KitGuru Says: This seems like a good first step towards getting the virtual console on the Switch, even if Nintendo is still keeping quiet on that subject. Have you guys been keeping up with the news coming out of Nintendo's Direct stream last night? Is there anything that has you excited?

Somehow nearly a decade has passed since the original release of celebrated, retro-gaming documentary, The King of Kong and the landscape of top-tier Donkey Kong gamers is very different today. Not only has the world record been raised to monumental heights since then, but the two champions of the film, Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell don't even feature in the top 10.

King of Kong was originally released in August of 2007, though saw a wider release in the following year. It chronicled the world record attempts by father and teacher Steve Wiebe, as he battled against not only rival Donkey Kong player Billy Mitchell, but a perceived bias against him for certain affiliations and a seeming old-boys mentality in the retro gaming community.

kingofkong

While many aspects of King of Kong have proved to be exaggerated in the years since its debut, the battle for a world record score in the original 1981 arcade release of Donkey Kong was very real and has continued to this day. However in 2017, Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell's million plus scores which required so much effort to achieve, barely register in the top 20, let alone the top 10.

At the time of writing, Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe occupy the 19th and 18th places on the official top 20 rankings. Both have long since retired from active competition, though you do occasionally see them make appearances where they attempt to show kill screens, or make semi-serious runs at a decent score.

Today though there are new champions. followed by a multi-year reign by Hank Chien, several others have pushed the boundaries of what scores are possible within the game. Dean Saglio's previously considered unbeatable score on the MAME emulator rests in third place, having been achieved way back in 2013. But it was in 2016 that we saw the really astounding scores appear.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkwECcfqX_I']

We reported last year how Wes Copeland posted a potentially difinitive score of 1,218,000, which required not only amazing skill, but amazing luck with certain randomised elements in the game. Serious competitor Robbie Lakeman pledged to take the record back and almost managed it just a few weeks later, but ultimately his score of 1,206,900 fell short by a reasonable margin.

As the Donkey Kong Blog points out, as much as the champions of King of Kong, Wiebe and Mitchell, may no longer be the royalty they once were, they were the pioneers who helped push the game well beyond what was previously thought possible. They discovered many of the tricks still used today to rack up massive points and world record runs. Without them, few of those who came after would have gotten even close to what they achieved with the game.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I'd definitely be up for a decade later, where are they now documentary for both of those Kings of Kong, especially if it was wrapped around a look at the current champions. I wonder what Brian Kuh is up to these days.

If you hanker for the long-gone days of dark and dingy arcades, with blinking and blooping machines with youngsters huddled round them, then New Retro Arcade: Neon is your VR dream come true. In its latest update too, the developers have added light gun support, meaning Time Crisis 2 and a host of other games are now available to play, just as they were back in the day.

Virtual reality is an exciting medium because it pushes the boundaries of what we know entertainment to be. It's ushered in all sorts of amazing new experiences for young and old alike, from the educational, to the awe inspiring, to the action packed. But it can also let us go back and relive life as it once was, like when we used to visit arcades. That's what New Retro is all about.

lightgunarcade2

Compatible with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR headsets, New Retro Arcade lets you visit the old world with up to five friends, letting you interact with it using fully tracked motion controllers – and now with light guns too. You will need to set the ROMs up yourself, or just tap up the community for the relevant files and folders, but that's the beauty of the VR arcade: it can be whatever you want it to be.

Despite launching in Japan as a – relatively unprofitable – arcade cabinet in mid-2015, Pokkén Tournament still has yet to show up on the Wii U. That's going to change on 18th March though, so it's about time we had a better look at what the game is all about. Fortunately there's now 15 minutes of in-game footage to enjoy, all in glorious English too.

With this particular video, it might be worth skipping over the first two minutes, as there's a lot of Avatar customisation with in-game currency purchases for hair, clothing, effects etc.. However following that, we get right into a battle between MewTwo and Lucario, who beat seven shades out of each other with a variety of physical attacks and epic abilities.

Aesthetically the game isn't bad looking at all, and there's clearly a lot of depth in how you customise your Pokémon as they level up and unlock upgrades. Here's hoping that the announcer is only there to give you tips as part of a tutorial though, as she doesn't shut up.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl3KvF07Pxs']

Later when we move on to character select screens, we can see that there are 14 characters to choose from, plus a bonus Shadow MewTwo, though there may be others to unlock as the screen certainly has space for it. There's also a wide combination of support characters to choose from, offering different abilities and skills for the fight to come.

There looks to be 19 stages to play on in total, ranging from scorching volcanoes, to simple training gyms.

Although competitive gaming is far bigger today than it once was, it's not just about League of Legends, Counter Strike and Call of Duty. There are still some classics kicking around the competitive scene and while there are a few popular ones among them, none are quite like the original Donkey Kong. Raising the bar ever higher, former champion Wes Copeland has come back strong in 2016 to reclaim the crown.

If the last time you paid attention to Donkey Kong records was when the King of Kong was released back in 2007, then you have some catching up to do. Although Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell are considered pioneers in the game, especially when it came to breaking the mythical one million point mark, their scores are no longer relevant at the top end of the charts.

copelandlakeman

Copeland (R) and Lakeman (L) pictured together. Source: DonkeyKongBlog

Indeed their scores are currently ranked 15th and 16th respectively, with neither having placed highly on the board since 2010. 1.06 million is impressive with few people in the world able to even get close to those totals, but the real high-end players are far beyond that now.

The new record by Wes Copeland sits at 1,190,000 and was submitted on the 3rd January this year, taking a bat to Robbie Lakeman's 1,177,200 score posted back in October 2015. It still falls short of Dean Saglio's 1,206,800 record set on the MAME emulator back in 2013, but the true champion has to complete their run on an original 1981 arcade cabinet.

What's particularly interesting about Copeland's latest run though, beyond its record setting ways, is that his pace was on-point to beat even Saglio's score, but Copeland did not secure enough points in the earliest levels of the three hour+ endeavour to break it.

Lakeland did try and retake the record in quick succession – as he did within six hours the last time Copeland became champion – but fell short, and quickly sent a congratulatory message to the new king of Kong. Both men have said they plan to take a break from the game, but perhaps will return once again.

KitGuru Says: Don't count old champion Hank Chien out yet though. He won the head-to-head Kong-Off against many high level players and former champions last October. He may have it in him to return to the top of the pile.

Although in the history of gaming there have been a number of bizarre controllers, from the Intellivision's turn wheel and numpad, to the N64's need for three hands, things have settled down in recent years. Sure we may be talking touch controls for VR, but for the most part, gamepads look somewhat the same, with dual sticks, four face buttons and a D-Pad. Not so on the arcade controller for upcoming Pokemon brawler, Pokken Tournament.

It has a D-Pad for sure, as well as four face buttons, but they are stretched far further apart than usual. There's a start button in-between, somewhere, perhaps on the back and that's it. While you may not need any more control than that, the question should be asked: why is it so giant?

It's also white and red, which is hardly typical.

This was revealed in the latest trailer for the game, which shows the stylised arcade cabinet that is presumably already available in Japan, where the game was released back in July. The home console, Wii U version will be arriving in the west sometime in Q2 2016 if Bandai Namco can keep to its schedule.

The game, which sees elements of Pokemon combined with Tekken, creates a beat'em up with classic Pokemon characters.

KitGuru Says: As weird as the controller is, what do you guys think of how the game looks? Will you be picking it up when it hits the Wii U next year?

Since King of Kong was released back in 2007 to critical acclaim, retro gaming has seen a bump to its resurgence, but none of those 30+ year old games more than Donkey Kong. While Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe may have gone head to head virtually alone (save for Tim Sczerby), today the competition is far stiffer. If you want to even break into the top ten, you'll need well over a million poins and over 1,100,000 to get into the top five. But if you think you have what it takes to hang with the best of the best, this weekend is the one to prove it, as you can win cash prizes.

The competition is being hosted by the Donkey Kong Forum, the currently semi-official home of Donkey Kong scoring after the unceremonious closure of Twin Galaxies late last year, with this weekend coming being dedicated to Donkey Kong streaming action. Starting 21st February at 9PM pacific time and running until the same time on the 23rd, participants will be required to stream their Donkey Kong playing via Justin.tv or Twitch.tv. If you don't stream, you can't compete and you can't win prizes.

Don't forget to register too.

donkeykong
Seriously. If your stream doesn't look like this throughout your entire run, you're out.

However if you get all that set up, you'll be in with a chance of winning a few bucks for your trouble. While there are prizes for top scores, there's also bounties available for specific goals reached.

Prizes
– $200 for the 1st place submitted validated score
– $150 for the 2nd place submitted validated score
– $100 for the 3rd place submitted validated score
– $50 for the 4rd place submitted validated score
– $25 for the 5rd place submitted validated score

Bounties
– $50 for the first player to reach 800,000 points on their first jump man
– $50 for the first 1 million+ point game submission for someone who has never reached 1 million points in any previous DK game ever played
– $50 for the player who completes the most boards on their first jump man
– $50 for the player who completes the most boards on their last jump man
– $50 for the mystery bounty

While you might think the second bounty would be hard to verify, I think it's safe to say that if anyone gets a million points in DK, they're telling everyone.

If you want to read the full rules, you can do so here, or head here to register.

KitGuru Says: My top score ever in DK was 77,000, which isn't bad, but it's hardly impressive. I'm certainly no Eminem

Inspiration and crushed dreams all rolled in to one, that's what high-level Donkey Kong scores are. They show us what we'd potentially be capable of if we spent an inordinate amount of time jumping barrels and punching out rivets, but at the same time, they show us just how much time we'd have to put in to achieve that and it's demoralising.

That happened once again to this gamer when I viewed the new Kong Off 3 Online Open Qualifier scores, which have now been correlated. The top three participants all broke a million points and there was a handful of kill screens throughout the round – something that was far rarer back in 2008 when we first saw the documentary: King of Kong.

kongoff3

The top eight players who stand a good chance of heading to the Kong Off 3 – I think, forgive me for being a little confused about the Kong Off qualifying procedure, but it's unusually obtuse – are:

  1. Phil Tudose: 1,051,600
  2. Jon Mckinnell: 1,019,800
  3. Ben Falls: 1,012,700
  4. Jeff Wolfe: 997,800
  5. Eric Tessler: 966,000
  6. Corey Chambers: 964,500
  7. Chris Psaros: 893,100
  8. Robbie Lakeman: 851,300

Note that these rankings do not feature any of the current top ranked players in the world like Vincent Lemay, Hank Chien, or either of the pro/an-tagonists from King of Kong: Steve Wiebe and Bill Mitchell. Being ranked as they are, they get automatic entry into the Kong Off finals. However, ex-champion and oft forgotten Tim Sczerby does make an appearance in the qualifier tables, but his score wasn't good enough to place.

KitGuru Says: Considering my own best score is 77,000, you can understand why this list is depressing. Still, if I'd achieved that as part of the Kong Off qualifier, I'd have placed 38th out of 43. So not horrendous, I suppose.

The last two major attempts to take down a thirty year standing record for Q*Bert have required a tag team duo, presumably for mutual support as much as competitive inspiration. The 2011 attempt failed, but the 2013 one has seen one man go all the way – smashing the 68 hour previous record and instilling a new one: 84 hours, 50 minutes of play.

Of course with a record attempt like this, it's not uncommon for those trying to drop out with fatigue. That's what happened to one of the two players in this latest run, but one man made it all the way. His name was George Leutz, who was one of the previously failed competitors back in 2011. In total, he managed to drum up 37,163,080 points using a single quarter.

Qbert
Released in 1982, Q*Bert was hugely popular in early 80s arcades.

Completed as part of the “Bert off,” a play on the perhaps better known Kong Off where the world's best Donkey Kong players come together and compete head to head for the best live score, this new Q*Bert record toppled one that had been place since 1983, as well as taking the longevity record.

KitGuru Says: Records like this are feats of endurance – far beyond anything I ever did, even in the marathon days of my youth. I think the most I ever managed was about 15 straight hours on the original Summoner multiplayer. What about you guys? What's your longest gaming run?

[Thanks Examiner]
