Recently there has been a definite trend to having bigger mobile devices. Smartphone flagships are well over 5 inches in size now, and tablets are getting bigger too – just take a look at the 13.3 inch iPad Pro. It is refreshing, then, to see ARCHOS buck the trend with its 70b Helium tablet.

With a display measuring just 7 inches across, the ARCHOS 70b Helium really is a small tablet. Priced at just over £70, it is also very affordable. This review will see if the ARCHOS 70b Helium is worth a purchase at this low price point.

Something that is not often talked about is the thickness (or thinness) of tablets. Toshiba's AT200 currently holds that title but Archos' G10 XS is to soon take this particular featherweight title. The G10 XS will be a mere 7.6mm thick, just 0.1mm thinner than Toshiba's own 10 inch tablet.

Archos' G10 XS 10 inch tablet, measuring just 7.6mm thick

The tablet will come running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and be Google certified (so it can run Gmail and other Google Play Store applications,) something many of Archos' previous attempts cannot attest to. No internal specifications were released at the press event for some strange reason. Instead much of the presentation was focused on the tablet's slim design.

There will also be a keyboard dock that will make the tablet-keyboard combination look very much like the Asus Eee Pad Slider. Even with the keyboard dock attached the tablet will still only be 12mm thick. Pricing for the G10 XS is estimated to be around 199€ or $260 USD.

7 and 8 inch variants will also become available that will reportedly have the same 7.6 waistline and should be a available for 129€ and 149€ respectively. There is currently no official word on availability.

Kitguru says: I love it when the up and coming underdogs come out with an awesome looking device.

If you're an existing Archos G9 Android tablet user you may or may not have been pleasantly surprised with a certain update that graced your tablet yesterday. Archos has started rolling out over-the-air updates for its G9 series tablets that will suit them up with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).

If you haven't spotted it already, there should be a notification in the bottom right of your Archos G9 tablet's screen whereby tapping on it will allow the magic to begin.

Starting today, the over-the-air (OTA) upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich will begin rolling out to G9 owner's worldwide. Just look for the notification “A” in the lower right hand corner of your device – click it, download it and begin your Ice Cream Sandwich experience.

Certainly it will be in your best interests to do so given the option, with ICS sporting faster browsing characteristics, multitasking, many new features and generally a much smoother and more polished environment than prior Android releases all round.

Further incorporated beyond the defaults of ICS in the case of Archos' update is full 1080p support for the majority of video codecs as well as 3D video support for MKV3D files. Then there's a handy drag and drop feature incorporated into the file manager, the ability to share content wirelessly between the tablet and a computer or other DNLA compatible devices and a remote control feature allowing users to control the tablet using any other Android-based device.

KitGuru says: Finally a step in the right direction for yet another Android device maker. A shame it's taken many other manufacturers so long to make the move – worst yet, some who have no plans to.

Archos have made some great products in the last five years and I owned several of their portable players many eons ago, which I always loved. Their latest internet tablet with Android 2.2 (Froyo) is now available in the shops. The Archos 43 uses a Cortex A8 processor.

The Archos 43 is based around a 4.3 inch screen running at 854×480 resolution with an HDMI output.

For around $250 you get Wifi (802.11 b/g/n/), bluetooth and 16GB of onboard storage which can be expanded via a microSD card slot. The ARM Cortex A8 runs at 1ghz with DSP and graphics support for 3D OpenGl ES 2.0. It can also record HD video at 720p with the built in rear facing 2MP camera.

Many users will love the fact it fully supports FLAC lossless audio playback, something missing on the Apple iPod touch devices. It supports Windows, OS X and Linux
