It is becoming quite common for Sony’s monthly free PlayStation Plus games to be leaked prior to their official announcement. So far, Sony has seemingly not been able to plug the leak, as March’s upcoming free titles have been revealed early.

BillBil-Kun is a known leaker with a history of unveiling games coming to subscription services before their official announcements. Shaking things up in March, Billbil revealed just two of the upcoming free PS+ titles (though decided to do it in a tongue-in-cheek manner) claiming that PlayStation players should engage “big hesitation before buying Ark Survival Evolved and Team Sonic Racing on PS4,” saying:

“Hello or good evening everyone. I got interested in Ark Survival Evolved and Team Sonic Racing recently, and I still want to buy them to play on my PS5. Knowing that I don't really have any money, I really hesitate to buy them. But hey, in the end, maybe I'll wait until the beginning of next month. Thank you for your support.”

Sony typically offers 3 free games each month: Two PS4, and a PS5 game. With Team Sonic Racing and Ark: Survival Evolved both being PS4 titles, the much-anticipated PS5 game is still unknown. PS Now subscribers will be getting Shadow Warrior 3 as a day-one title on its service, and so hopefully the as-of-yet-unknown March PS5 game for PS+ proves to be equally as exciting.

Recently, a game known as Myth of Empires was removed from the Steam Store following allegations that developers used stolen source code from Ark: Survival Evolved. This allegation caught some traction, as Angela Game, the studio behind Myth of Empires, was founded by a former employee with access to Ark's code. Now, Angela Game is fighting back, responding with a lawsuit.

Angela Game has now filed a lawsuit with the US District Court of California, seeking a jury trial to rule on whether or not the studio infringed on copyright, or used stolen material in the development of its game, Myth of Empires. The lawsuit names both Snail Games, the studio behind Ark: Survival Evolved, as well as its publisher, Wildcard.

As reported by MMOFallout, the lawsuit states that Snail Games and Wildcard were behind the removal of Myth of Empires on Steam. Apparently, Wildcard had told Valve that the game was built using stolen source code, which created the foundation for Myth of Empires' gameplay mechanics.

Angela Games contests this claim, stating that the evidence Wildcard presented to Valve “misleadingly presents, out of order, an extremely small set of ‘names' that exist in Myth of Empires source code and omits software code”.

Aside from seeking a trial to clear its name, Angela Game is also seeking an undisclosed sum for damages. Wildcard and Snail Games have not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit.

A few weeks ago, the upcoming free titles offered by the Epic Games Store on a weekly basis was leaked. Last week’s offering was said to be Ark: Survival Evolved, however the game on offer was in fact Overcooked! Now, one week later than expected, Ark: Survival Evolved has been made free. Available to purchase and download right now, the game is free until the 18th of June to all those with an Epic Games account.

Ark: Survival Evolved is (unsurprisingly) a survival game which sees you “Stranded on the shores of a mysterious island” where “you must learn to survive”. Players will use “cunning to kill or tame the primeval creatures roaming the land, and encounter other players to survive, dominate… and escape!”

Initially released in 2017, the game received mixed reviews due to its swath of bugs and performance issues. Fortunately in 2020, many of the issues and “rough edges” have been fixed, meaning that now more than ever, Ark: Survival Evolved is worth giving a go.

Furthermore, support for the game is far from over, with the game’s developer – Studio Wildcard – having released an expansion as recently as February 2020 – with more to come in the future.

Offering both single player and multiplayer modes, players can take on the world’s dangers as a lone wolf, or can team up with others to form a tribe, tame dinosaurs, and build structures.

Ark: Survival Evolved is available for free on the Epic Games Store from now until the 18th of June at 4pm, at which point, it will be replaced by ‘Pathway’ and ‘The Escapists 2’.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the past month’s worth of offerings? Do you appreciate Epic Games’ commitment to giving players free games? What game would you like to see on offer in the future? Let us know down below.

Further expanding from its base dinosaur taming gameplay, Ark’s next expansion pits players against a whole host of fresh monstrosities to fight and control on a new, malfunctioning Ark called ‘Aberration’. Players clever and strong enough to survive Aberration will “uncover the ultimate secrets of the Arks and discover what the future holds in store.”

Aberration takes place in an elaborate underground biome system due to the ARK’s internal atmosphere leaking away, causing harsh radioactive sunlight to engulf its surface. Looking up at the end of the expansion’s trailer reveals the surface of another planet, one which is distinctly otherworldly.

Among the new creatures are the very alien-like ‘Rock Drake’, which harbours the ability to guild, stick to rocks and camouflage itself to its surroundings, the ‘Lantern Pug’, which help light the way similar to that of a walking anglerfish, the ‘Cave Crustacean’, that enables the player to “grab and toss multiple creatures simultaneously,” and perhaps the most dreaded ‘Nameless Queen.’ The Nameless Queen takes inspiration directly from Alien (1979), impregnating “foes with a horrifying reproductive chest-burster.”

Studio Wildcard touts over 50 new items in Aberration, from new technology like electric railguns to combat element-infused humanoids, to gliding wingsuits, climbing picks, ziplines and hazmat suits to traverse the treacherous terrain.

Including the aforementioned radiation, Aberration also exposes gas leaks and earthquakes in which players must avoid. To uncover the secrets, each player must beat the elemental chambers, and perhaps more interesting, the mysterious “master.” Given that this boss is touted as a “him,” it’s unlikely to be the already-feared Nameless Queen, but rather a more powerful enemy.

The Aberration expansion will be available on December 12th for $20 as a standalone purchase, or a part of the Season Pass, which subsequently nets you exclusive cosmetic gear including the Aberration Helmet and Sword.

KitGuru Says: At least this won’t stir as many people up considering it comes after Ark’s full release. I find it interesting to see it fully committing to the sci-fi themes, as this opens up untold directions for the future of the game. Will you be jumping back on Ark for Aberration?

Earlier this month, we saw Ark: Survival Evolved jump in price, from around £24.99 to £49.99, all in preparation for the game’s exit from Early Access and physical disc launch on the 8th of August. Unfortunately, Studio Wildcard will no longer be able to meet that date, so Ark will remain in Early Access for a bit longer than previously thought, with the full launch now arriving at the very end of August.

Originally, the game was set to come out of Early Access on Tuesday next week. However, today Studio Wildcard announced that while the game has ‘gone gold’, the retail certification process is slow, meaning things had to be pushed back, even for those who already own the game and don’t necessarily care about the physical retail release.

Here is the quote from Studio Wildcard explaining the situation:

“As of today, Ark has completed its Gold Master and certification for retail release. This process took a little longer than expected and as a result, our release date has been pushed back to August 29th. We're deeply apologetic for those who were negatively affected by the delay; it sucks, it wasn't what we had wanted, nor planned but where we currently stand. We wanted to address this sooner but did not want to make any statements until we were completely sure of what was going to happen.”

Unfortunately, for those who already own the game, it seems Studio Wildcard is bending over backwards to accommodate physical retail chains as part of Ark’s release strategy. This follows on from one developer at the studio admitting that Ark’s recent price hike was also largely due to physical retailer demands.

On the plus side, those who do own Ark on Steam already will receive a larger update at the end of the month, with free DLC ‘The Ragnarok’ releasing alongside the final release version of the game. The base game will also receive some extra improvements, including the world’s surface area increasing in size by around 25 percent. New biomes will enter the mix, a huge in-world boss encounter will be added and finally, new engrams will also be available.

KitGuru Says: Ark isn’t a bad game content-wise but I do think the developers are placing too much focus on getting boxed copies into physical stores. Even on console, the digital market is growing bigger and bigger each year, with physical stores becoming less relevant. Hopefully the final version of the game will end up being worth it.

Ark: Survival Evolved has been in early access for a couple of years now but the journey out is now set, with the game getting its ‘full release' on the 8th of August. In preparation for this, Studio Wildcard has boosted the game's price, bumping it up from $29.99/£24.99 to $59.99/£54.99 on Steam.

The idea behind this price bump is to “ensure retail parity” at launch, which seems odd for a game that has been on sale for less than £10 before, according to the Steam Database. This move may have caught some by surprise but it was documented on the game's Steam page ahead of time, with the developers warning that “the game will be lower priced through Early Access, relative to its final full-version retail price”.

Aside from the base game, there is already an expansion for Ark ready to go too, the £14.99 Scorched Earth DLC, which grants access to a whole new game world. Those who already own Ark won't need to worry about the price increase but if you were holding out for the full version, then you will have to make peace with the new higher price.

KitGuru Says: Ark: Survival Evolved is a popular game but I do wonder how many people are going to be willing to pay full price for it at this point. If anything, I could see this pushing people to grey market key sellers, where the game will likely be less than half of the new price. How many of you already own or play Ark? Would you have paid full price for it?

ARK: Survival Evolved is coming to virtual reality, but not in the exact same guise as its original release. This isn't some Survival of the Fittest game mode either, but an educational, open world of dinosaurs and environments to explore. Coming in 2017, virtual reality is getting tickets to Ark Park.

If you had told young Jon that he'd have to wait more than two decades after the release of Jurassic Park to visit such a place, I don't think I could have handled it, but knowing that we're mere months away from doing so in virtual reality, has me all kinds of giddy. While Time Machine VR might have given us a glimpse of an educational dino experience in VR, Ark Park looks set to take it to a whole new level.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTD44w9EfHc']

Developed by Chinese studio, Snail Games, with Wildcard providing guidance, Ark Park is an officially licensed version of the original ARK content and lets users explore swamp, forest, desert and snowy mountain range environments, all populated with the high-fidelity dinosaurs we've come to know from Survival Evolved. Visitors to Ark Park will be given educational information about the dinosaurs and will be able to interact with them while travelling through the open world environments, whether on foot, in the back of a jeep or even while riding some of the creatures themselves.

arkpark01 arkpark02

The game won't be just about watching though. You'll be tasked with recovering genetic information from many of the dinosaurs, some of which will be illusive and timid, so may require coaxing with a carrot or stick.

For those who have been playing ARK for a while, you'll be able to import your favourite dinos into the up-close petting area too, where you can interact with them like never before.

ARK Park is set for release in 2017 on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.

One of the cooler moments in Ark: Survival Evolved, is taming yourself a big carnivore to stomp around on. There's not much more badass than knowing you have several tonnes of muscle and teeth on your side should a fight break out, but in Ark, a lot of people have big, bone crunching dinosaurs on their side. To really stand out, you need something big, or something powerful and preferably both. So why not try wrangling yourself one of the new Giganotosaurus?

gigaonotosaurus

Based on a the Giganotosaurus genus of reality, which could measure over 40 ft in length and up to 14 tonnes, this digitally reproduced dino is even bigger than that. While the ancient creature from 100 million years ago may have been a little bigger than most carnivores from the Tyrannosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus genera, the Ark Giganotosaurus is the next step up in monstrous destruction.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrt21WitQBc']

It is slower than some of the other big dinos though, so there's something you can take advance of. However if you want to try going toe to toe with one, perhaps you just need to make your current dinosaur pals a little tougher. Like giving them armour using the “Pimp my Rex” mod.

pimp

Version 1.0 was just released and it gives you access to three different armour types for your Tyrannosaur, with options for leather armour, chitin armour and metal armour for those that want ultimate protection. All of them offer a decent level of extra armour to your Rex, which should up its survivability, but I'm still not convinced it'll be enough to take on a Giganotosaurus.

Actually living through a game of Ark: Survival Evolved would be pretty terrifying. Finding yourself on an island populated by creatures that want to eat you, people that want to kill you and the ever present danger of eating your own poo and dying from disease. Still, at least it's warm, so if you can get enough to eat it has a whiff of tropical paradise about it; not after the next patch. In Patch 216, players will be faced with winter climates, where warm clothing is required and wooly mammoths can be hunted down for food and resources.

north
The North remembers

The snowy biomes are as deadly as they are chilling, with giant  Direwolves that of course, players can tame and ride, which is the first thing many will do. However there's also large reindeer like creatures called Megaloceros, which looks like they come right out of the third Hobbit movie.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMyB32Nv_2g']

However as difficult to survive as the frozen wastelands are, insects are at least at a minimum. That's not so in the new swamp biome, where there are giant bugs, giant amphibians, reptiles and more to contend with. The new ridable Beelzebufo is an interesting addition. A monstrously huge frog, which players can ride and use to leap high and far, making new areas more accessible than ever before.

Additional changes include a raising of player and creature level caps by five, a few bug fixes and tweaks, and the addition of new furniture items. Full patch notes can be read here.
