As promised, Xbox Game Studios showed up in force at The Game Awards last night. Not only did we get a new trailer for Ninja Theory's Hellblade 2, but Arkane also made an appearance. The bad news is, we aren't getting Dishonored 3 like rumours claimed. However, they are working on a new game centred around Marvel character Blade.

While rumours claimed that Arkane's Lyon studio may announce Dishonored 3 at The Game Awards, instead we got a completely unexpected and surprising announcement. Arkane Lyon has been tasked with creating Marvel's Blade:

“In Marvel’s Blade, Eric Brooks is the legendary Daywalker, half-man, half-vampire torn between the warm society of the living and the rushing power of the undead”, the description reads. The game is set to be a “mature, single-player, third-person game set in the heart of Paris”.

In an Xbox Wire post, Blade game director, Dinga Bakaba, explained that the reveal is taking place now to celebrate the character's 50th anniversary. The game is currently in early development and no gameplay was shown in the reveal trailer. We also don't have confirmation on supported platforms yet so this project may be mapped out for 2028, which is when the next Xbox is expected to launch.

KitGuru Says: Given Arkane's success with first-person action games, I would have liked to have seen a first-person take on Blade but that could be partially to do with Marvel – after all, they want you to see their characters on the screen as often as possible.

Microsoft has already confirmed that Starfield won't be part of tonight's Xbox Developer Direct steam. Instead, the company will be focusing on titles like Redfall today. We may not be waiting long to get our next look at Starfield though, as Bethesda will reportedly host a media event in March.

According to sources speaking with Insider Gaming, Bethesda has begun planning a media event for early March. This follows on from Microsoft's confirmation this week that Starfield won't be at the Xbox Developer Direct, as the company is saving it for its own event.

We last saw Starfield at the Xbox showcase last Summer, with Bethesda giving us our first look at the massive universe they've created. We haven't seen new gameplay since and while the game is targeting a release in the first half of this year, a specific date has not yet been announced.

It is unclear at this time if Bethesda's upcoming media event will be a public stream or a private hands-on event for members of the media. If it is a hands-on event, then it may end up being Redfall-focused, giving press outlets a chance to publish previews ahead of the game's reported May release date.

KitGuru Says: If Starfield is still coming out in the first half of this year, then Microsoft should be thinking about ramping up its marketing efforts pretty soon. Even if this particular event isn't Starfield-related, we shouldn't be waiting long for more official information.

While Arkane was due to debut its first Xbox exclusive, Redfall, in 2022, the game was delayed alongside Bethesda's Starfield, with both now planned for ‘the first half of 2023'. According to new reports, it looks like Redfall will now be arriving in May.

Sources familiar with Arkane's plans have told Windows Central that Redfall is targeting a May release date. There may also be a pre-order incentive planned granting early access to the game slightly ahead of its official release.

Redfall is a co-op focused game that can be played solo, but it is primarily designed around having up to four players. The game is set in the fictional town of Redfall, which has become overrun with vampires. In an open-world setting, you and up to three other players will travel around completing quests and taking down vampire leaders along the way to take back control of the town.

Redfall was originally going to come out in 2022, but was delayed earlier this year alongside Bethesda's next major RPG, Starfield. Both titles are now expected to land on Xbox and PC in the first half of 2023. Current rumours suggest the game will release in May. Microsoft is reportedly planning a Q1 showcase to go over the titles planned for the first half of the year, so if this rumour is true, we will likely see Redfall there.

KitGuru Says: Redfall seems like one of those games I likely wouldn't pick up, but with it coming to Game Pass, I'll almost certainly be giving it a go. Are many of you looking forward to Arkane's Vampire-themed co-op shooter?

Prior to Microsoft acquiring Bethesda, Sony had actually set up a partnership with the company, which would see two Bethesda games turn into PS5 console exclusives. The first game, Deathloop, launched in 2021 to great critical acclaim and soon, it looks like the PS5 exclusivity period will come to an end.

Trailers for the PS5 version of Deathloop had a disclaimer, stating that the game is only exclusive to the console until the 14th of September 2022. That happens to be today, and right on cue ads for Deathloop have now started appearing on the Xbox dashboard:

The ad indicates that Deathloop will be getting an Xbox release soon, and it will also end up launching straight onto Game Pass. Up to now, Deathloop has only been available on PS5, and PC via stores like Steam, but not through Xbox Game Pass for PC or the Windows Store. That will now change with the exclusivity period ending.

With the ad now appearing on the Xbox dashboard, we would expect an official announcement from the Xbox team very soon. This also improves the chances of Ghostwire: Tokyo heading to Xbox consoles and Game Pass in early 2023.

Following on from the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase a few days ago, developers have been taking on interviews and revealing a few new details about upcoming games. This includes Arkane's Redfall, a co-op game that will have one major downside – progress isn't persistent for all players.

Speaking with IGN in an interview this week, Redfall designer, Harvey Smith, revealed that campaign progress will only be persistent for the host of a co-op game. That means any players joining a host's campaign won't make any story progress on their own saves, so you'll have to replay missions in solo mode if you aren't the host. While you won't make story progress for your character while joining another player, your character level, skills and weapons will apparently carry over, which could ruin the balance of early missions in the game on your solo playthrough.

Smith claims that while the team initially intended to give every player in a session a ‘credit' for completing a mission, they found that for the flow of the game, players would be better off having to replay missions in solo mode to better keep up with the story.

Other co-op games have done this in the past, including Wolfenstein Youngblood and Dying Light. A number of fans have already commented negative reactions to this news, with many hoping there is still time to reverse this decision.

KitGuru Says: Typically I'll pick up a game like this to exclusively play in co-op, but having to replay story missions kind of takes the point out of it for me. Unfortunately, it may well be too late in the development cycle to make any major changes to this now.

The Xbox and Bethesda 2022 showcase has arrived, with a key focus on games coming out within the next 12 months. The show opened up with one of last year's surprises, Redfall, which now has an official gameplay trailer.

Redfall opened up the show this year with a 6-minute gameplay presentation. We see some direct capture gameplay, as well as a more cinematic introduction of key characters towards the end:

The gameplay trailer reveals that Redfall is an open world game, set on an island overrun with vampires. It'll be your job to take them out either solo or in a co-op squad. As we can see from the trailer, this is also a looter shooter, so expect to be swapping out gear and unlocking new abilities throughout your journey.

To me, this wasn't a great way to open the show, as Redfall looks like an easy 7/10, but we'll discuss that in more detail in a KitGuru Games next week.

Redfall was originally planned for 2022 but was recently delayed to the first half of 2023, alongside Starfield. A new release date has not been shared yet.

Prior to Valve scrapping the Half-Life 2: Episodes concept all those years ago, the team was working on Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Beyond that though, Valve was also licensing out the IP to other studios for future Half-Life Episodes. One of those studios was Arkane. Prior to Dishonored, Prey and Deathloop, Arkane was working on Half-Life: Ravenholm, and now, we have our best look yet at the game in action.

Back in 2020, NoClip released a documentary covering the history of Arkane Studios. We got quite a few details about the studio's cancelled Half-Life game back then, but now, NoClip has released a new video diving deeper into Ravenholm, the game's features and even gives us a good look at gameplay.

Arkane Studios was working on a Half-Life game set in Ravenholm, an ill-fated town where zombies roam. Unlike the other Half-Life games, Ravenholm would use a more advanced AI system for the zombies, allowing them to move faster and be more aggressive. Zombies would aim to attack in groups and they could pick up objects to use as weapons.

Judging by the new documentary, Half-Life: Ravenholm got quite far into development before being cancelled in 2008. Unfortunately, this is probably the most we're ever going to see of this game, unless the build leaks someday.

KitGuru Says: Ravenholm is another piece of interesting history in Valve's journey with Half-Life. The game had a lot of promise, but it just wasn't meant to be.

Since leaving Arkane Studios back in 2017, co-founder Raphaël Colantonio has been hard at work at WolfEye Studios, working on a new game called Weird West. The game takes inspiration from old-school RPGs like Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, but with more of an action focus. Unfortunately, the game was recently delayed.

Previously, WolfEye Studios and publisher Devolver Digital had plans to release the game in 2021. Now with not many days left in the year, the team has confirmed that Weird West has been delayed until the end of March 2022.

In a Steam blog post, the studio explained that it needs this extra time to continue polishing up the game and squashing bugs, some of which are a result of the game's complex RPG and immersive sim systems.

“Weird West is an impressively deep mix of action RPG and immersive sim which has the potential to deliver incredibly unique experiences, but also comes with a set of variables that can lead to unintended consequences”, the post reads. “That's why we want to take some and launch the game on March 31, 2022. This will give us time to iron out some of the bothersome issues and accidental deadends, before delivering an experience you, the community, expect.”

Weird West is now expected to release on the 31st of March 2022.

KitGuru Says: Weird West looks like a promising game, and as a first release for WolfEye Studios, it is important to get the launch right with as few bugs as possible.

Since rebooting Prey back in 2017, Arkane has been working on numerous other projects with no sign of a sequel. Ahead of The Game Awards this month, new rumours are beginning to pop up for potential announcements, and a sequel to Prey is amongst them.

According to a self-proclaimed inside source, Arkane Studio is finally working on a sequel to 2017's Prey reboot, which is reportedly called Prey 2: Neuroshock. The project supposedly evolved from a prototype at an in-studio game jam and after Microsoft acquired Bethesda, more resources were invested into developing a full-blown Prey sequel.

prey-e1469714949360.png

This is where things start to get a little less believable. The source claims that the game will mostly be set on Earth and feature a “Deus Ex like structure” with urban levels and missions handed to the player from a small handful of human survivors. The game will feature an expanded roster of enemy aliens, but fewer special abilities for the player.

The rumour ends by claiming that we'll see a CGI announcement trailer, with a release date planned for a year or two after Redfall, another game that Arkane Studios is currently working on.

KitGuru Says: As much as I would love to see a sequel to Prey (2017), this rumour doesn't sound particularly believable. With that said, I do hope that Prey 2 gets the greenlight someday, if it hasn't already. Now under Microsoft and with the benefits of Xbox Game Pass, Prey 2 would likely see far more success than the original.

During E3 this year, Arkane Studios made a surprise appearance to announce Redfall, a Vampire-themed co-op game coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC. The announcement trailer was purely CGI, with no gameplay shown. However, some recent play testers have now broke NDA on the game, revealing a bunch of screenshots.

Redfall isn't due out until some time in 2022, but it looks like third-party play testing is already underway. Usually, we wouldn't hear anything about these play tests due to NDAs, but one employee decided to go rogue, unveiling 14 screenshots online, some of which show more polished areas of the game, while others show in-development areas and tools, such as enemy spawners and other developer toggles.

As we can see from the screenshots, Redfall is a looter shooter. We can already see legendary gear, damage numbers a levelling system in place and more. The leaker also confirmed a few more details about the game, confirming that gameplay is very similar to Borderlands, but with a seamless open world, similar in scope to something like Ghost of Tsushima.

Each playable character has their own unique hero ability and in keeping with Arkane's tradition, you can focus on stealthy gameplay or guns-blazing action to get through missions. Some of these missions will also have Borderlands-style boss fights. Weapons will also be varied, from normal weapons like rifles and handguns to more unique weapons, like a stake launcher to keep enemy vampires at bay.

The game will include six playable characters at launch, four of which we already saw in the trailer for the game. Finally, the game can be played fully single-player, or in co-op mode, just like Wolfenstein: New Blood, which Arkane also worked on.

KitGuru Says: This leak seemingly came out of nowhere. Given that the game is already in play testing, it's starting to seem likely that this game will indeed meet its 2022 launch window.

We weren't sure if Deathloop was really going to make it out this year just a few months ago, but after last month's State of Play stream, all doubts were put to rest. Bethesda's first PS5 console exclusive has now gone gold ahead of its September release date.

Deathloop was originally going to come to PS5 and PC back in 2020, but it was pushed back to May 2021, and then delayed again to September 14th 2021. Now, after additional development time, the game has ‘gone gold', which essentially means that the game is content complete and ready to be put on disc for physical copies.

Of course, going gold doesn't always mean that work on the game is done, particularly nowadays when day-one patches are common. Still, it is a good milestone to reach and usually, this means the game will meet its scheduled release date. The one recent and notable exception to this has been Cyberpunk 2077, which was delayed again shortly after going gold.

Deathloop is a new game from Arkane Studios, putting players in the shoes of Colt, an assassin stuck in a time loop, while also being hunted by other assassins. In order to escape, you will need to use a mix of weapons and supernatural, Dishonored-style abilities to take out eight targets in one day.

While many of us expected Starfield or Halo Infinite to be the grand finale to the Xbox and Bethesda E3 showcase, Microsoft went in a surprising direction. At the end of the show, Redfall was announced, a new game by Prey and Dishonored developers Arkane Studios.

Arkane Studios' next game is another brand new IP. The vampire-themed Redfall is currently scheduled to release in Summer 2022 and will feature up to four-player co-op:

The trailer unfortunately does not include gameplay, but the cinematic sequence gives us a good idea of what to expect. Redfall aims to seamlessly blend solo-play and multiplayer, allowing players to go after vampires on their own, or do so with up to three other companions. The best comparison is likely Wolfenstein Youngblood, which also allows solo or co-op play throughout the campaign.

Redfall will be releasing exclusively on Xbox platforms, so expect to find it on Xbox Series X/S, PC and of course, Xbox Game Pass, in 2022.

KitGuru Says: As fun as the trailer was, there are still a lot of question marks around this game. We may not have to wait long to get some extra details though, as Xbox is holding another post-E3 event with its first-party studios next week.

Harvey Smith, co-creator behind Deus Ex and Dishonored has revealed this week that he is back working at Arkane Studios. At the moment, we know Arkane is working on Deathloop but Smith's team is working on something else.

Speaking with Spanish outlet Vandal (via IGN), Harvey Smith returned to Arkane Austin after finishing off Dishonored 2 at Arkane Lyon: “I'm not on Deathloop , I'm on something else, working with the guys who made Dishonored and Prey.”

Dishonored-5-e1474984163509.png

At the Austin studio, he is working on a new game with the creative team behind Dishonored and Prey, both of which were fantastic single-player games. Smith doesn't give away what this new game is, we just know that it is separate from Deathloop, which is a more experimental multiplayer game coming to PS5 and PC later this year.

Whatever this new project ends up being, it will likely be one of the first Arkane games to be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Microsoft is completing its acquisition of ZeniMax Media this year, making Bethesda, Arkane, Machine Games, Tango Gameworks and several other studios first-party, all falling under the Xbox Game Studios banner.

KitGuru Says: Dishonored and Prey are two of my favourite games from the last decade, so I'm looking forward to Arkane's next big single-player game. Are many of you looking forward to what Arkane does next?

For the last few years, Arkane Studios has been working on a multiplayer game called Deathloop. While this title was originally due to launch for the PlayStation 5 and PC later this year, it was delayed until Q2 2021 back in August. Now, the PlayStation store has revealed a more specific release date.

According to the PlayStation Store on PS5, Deathloop, Arkane Studios' first game since Prey back in 2017, will be releasing on the 21st of May 2021.

That date could just apply to the PS5 but that seems unlikely. Deathloop is a PS5 console exclusive, meaning the game is able to come to PC at the same time, just not competing consoles like the Xbox or Nintendo Switch.

Deathloop is a first-person game in a similar vein to Dishonored, where you play as an assassin with special powers. Over the course of the game, you will be tasked with taking down eight targets in order to reach your arch-nemesis and break out of the time loop you are stuck in. The motto for the game explains the concept quite well: “If at first you don’t succeed, die and die again”.

KitGuru Says: I'm interested in seeing Deathloop in action, although after Prey, I would much prefer a sequel to that game. Are many of you planning on playing this when it comes out?

It has been a long time since Bethesda and Arkane Studios last discussed Prey. The game just turned three years old last month but it looks like we might be seeing a second resurgence, as ‘Prey VR' has appeared at an online retailer.

Bethesda was one of the first major publishers to support VR, releasing Wolfenstein Cyberpilot, DOOM VFR, Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR. In the case of Skyrim VR, it launched as an exclusive for the PlayStation VR headset. Now, a game listing on ShopTo has hinted that Prey VR may also be coming as a PSVR title.

The retail listing has since been removed and while there have been plenty of accurate retail leaks around E3 time, we have also seen some fake ones. With that in mind, until Bethesda comments one way or the other, take this rumour with a pinch of salt.

Prey is an entirely first-person game with combat and other mechanics that would translate well to VR play, even with motion controllers. However, this could also be something much smaller, as Arkane's experimental multiplayer mode, Typhoon Hunter, did have VR support on PC.

KitGuru Says: Prey (2017) was very underrated in my opinion and if done well, a VR version could be a very good reason to explore the Talos 1 again. Hopefully we can get some clarification on this rumour from Bethesda later this week.

Prior to Valve scrapping the Half-Life 2: Episodes concept all those years ago, the team was planning and working on Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Beyond that though, Valve was also licensing out the IP to other studios for future Half-Life Episodes. One of those studios was Arkane, and soon, we will know more about their unreleased Half-Life 2 project.

Right now, the excellent channel ‘NoClip' is producing a documentary on ‘the untold history of Arkane Studios'. A trailer for this doc is out now and gives us a brief glimpse at Half-Life 2: Episode 4- yes you read that correctly.

Arkane Studios was working on a Half-Life game set in Ravenholm, an ill-fated town where more realistic zombies roam, kind of like the ones from Left 4 Dead, or more recently, the ones seen dotted around in Half-Life: Alyx.

Not much is known about the project, just that Arkane Studios was working on it and that it was ultimately scrapped. Arkane then went on to work on its own IP. More details on the project, how it came to fruition and how it came to an end should be revealed next week.

KitGuru Says: Valve has not had a great history with collaborating and licensing out its own projects. A previous NoClip documentary also revealed how Gearbox had its own issues trying to work with Valve. Still it will be interesting to hear more about what Arkane had planned all those years ago.

After leaving Arkane Studios, former president and creative director Raphael Colantonio, alongside former executive producer Julien Roby, launched their new independent project – WolfEye Studios. Despite its recent launch, the studio will announce its first game at The Game Awards 2019.

Colantonio, now President and Creative Director at WolfEye, stated that “after taking some time off and consulting for a variety of video games companies”, he is now up for new challenges. He believes AAA games suffer from a lack of innovation and Colantonio, as a game designer, wishes to experiment with his ideas and views through new independent games.

Roby, the CEO and Executive Producer at WolfEye, says he is glad to work together again with Colantonio and for “being able to build the kind of unique & deep games” that they both love to play.

Together, Roby and Colantonio have worked on games such as Dishonored, Prey (2017), and Arx Fatalis. At their new studio, they are aiming to create games focusing on the “simulation and gameplay possibilities” through interactions, while still emphasising the art direction and stylised graphics. Their objective is to make games where players have “their own adventures in rich simulated worlds that respond to actions and decisions in ways that are unique to each playthrough”.

WolfEye is already working on a project, planned to be presented at The Game Awards 2019 ceremony on December 12th.

Arkane Studios found itself in the spotlight several years ago after the launch of Dishonored and the franchise's success continued with Dishonored 2 and its subsequent expansion. However, while both games have performed well, we likely won't be seeing a Dishonored 3 for quite some time, as the franchise is currently ‘resting'.

This week, the folks at VG247 managed to catch up with Arkane lead designer, Ricardo Bare, who confirmed that while nothing is set in stone for the future, Dishonored “is resting for now”. Given the way things left off in Death of the Outsider, that might not be such a bad thing.

dishonoredheader1.jpg

In the meantime, Arkane will continue to work on crafting ‘immersive sim' style games in a similar vein to Prey and Dishonored: “The things that are important to us as a studio are coherent, deep world building and environmental storytelling – we’re always going to craft spaces that you feel like you’re visiting, whether it’s Dunwall or Talos 1.”

Bare also added that “improvisational gameplay” will also continue to play a role in future Arkane games. Essentially meaning you can expect future titles to still include a ton of cool abilities to experiment with.

KitGuru Says: While I didn't enjoy Dishonored 2 as much as the first game, it was still pretty solid after the PC performance patches came in. A return to the series some day would be great, but I think letting it rest for a while is a smart move and will give the studio a chance to work on something fresh. Did many of you enjoy Dishonored 2? Would you like to see a third game in the future?

Update (14/03/18): Bethesda and Arkane Studios are continuing to tease future Prey DLC content this week. This time around, the team posted the following cryptic message to Twitter: “a Great meMory: thRee thINGs caNNOt be lOnG hidden: the sun, the MOOn, AnD the tRuth.”

That on its own doesn't give us much, but if you take all of the capital letters and rearrange them, you get to the following message: “Good morning Morgan”. For those of you who have played through Prey already, you will know that Talos 1 wasn't the only Transtar space station in operation. There is also supposed to be one located on the moon.

From the sounds of it, Prey's future DLC will take players to the moon and once again put them in the shoes of Morgan Yu

Original Story (05/03/18): Since launch, Bethesda and Arkane Studios have been fairly quiet on the subject of Prey. The game may not have met lofty sales goals, but it was well received by fans and in my opinion, it was one of the best games of 2017. Around the time of its launch, we heard that DLC plans were on the table, but nothing has been heard since. However, it looks like something is now in the works, involving a lunar base on the moon.

Over on Twitter, the official Prey account posted a shot of the moon in-game, with the caption “do we really know what's out there?”

This on its own wouldn't stand for much. However, Prey DLC has been mentioned in the past and throughout the course of the main game, there are hints that there is a second Transtar base located on the moon.

Bethesda is usually keen on expanding on its published games to keep them in the spotlight for a bit longer. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games have received expansions, Arkane Studios' two Dishonored games also received expansions and hopefully, Prey will be getting the same treatment.

KitGuru Says: The Prey Twitter account tends to be quite active, so it is possible that this was just supposed to drum up fan engagement. However, given the amount of lore introduced in Prey, it would make sense to expand on the original game to explore things further. Did many of you play Prey last year? Would you like to see new content for it?

After years of rumours, speculation and even a cancellation, the Prey series is finally making its return next week. Over the years, the Prey license has been handed over to Arkane Studios, opting for a reboot of the series. In preparation for next week's launch, publisher Bethesda has released a demo for Prey, alongside the PC system requirements.

The Prey demo is only available on PS4 and Xbox One, likely due to concerns over data mining and early spoilers on PC. If you have the game pre-ordered, then you can pre-load the whole game, which measures in at around 42GB.

If you are planning on grabbing Prey on the PC, then you will need to know the minimum and recommended requirements. It is worth noting that Prey is running on the CryEngine, so higher graphics settings may end up being quite demanding.

Minimum requirements:

  • CPU: Intel i5-2400, AMD FX-8320
  • GPU: GTX 660 2GB, AMD Radeon 7850 2GB
  • Memory: 8 GB

Recommended specs:

  • CPU: Intel i7-2600K, AMD FX-8350
  • GPU: GTX 970 4GB, AMD R9 290 4GB
  • Memory: 16 GB

The Prey reboot takes place on the Talos I space station. You will play as either a male or female Morgan Yu, the lead scientist on=board. Eventually, things go wrong, aliens appear and you get supernatural abilities to help fight them off. The game fully releases on the 5th of May.

KitGuru Says: I was excited for Prey initially but that died pretty quick after seeing the state of Dishonored 2 on PC at launch. However, with Prey being on a different engine entirely, hopefully those issues will be avoided. Are any of you guys looking forward to the Prey reboot? Have any of you had a chance to try the demo on console?

It looks like Bethesda came to Gamescom this year armed with a few surprises, one of them being new gameplay footage for Prey, Arkane Studios' reboot of the franchise. The game was officially announced at E3 this year with a cinematic trailer, though it didn't give much away in terms of gameplay, so this is our first look at the game itself.

The video itself is quite short, lasting just under two minutes. It shows the player walking through what looks like an abandoned space station, until alien creatures pop-up out of nowhere, only to be turned to stone by a gun, and then crumbled by the player's ‘super thermal' power.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-xJQPLYOuQ']

It shows off the direction that Arkane Studios is going with Prey, keeping some of the familiar sci-fi elements but also mixing things up with new weapons and powers. Right now, we know that Prey has no ties to the original game, so expect a few more differences to pop-up along the way.

Prey is currently scheduled to come out in 2017, though an exact date hasn't been nailed down just yet.

KitGuru Says: After the confusing Prey cinematic trailer, it is nice to see some real gameplay to get a feel for the game. Are any of you guys looking forward to the Prey reboot? Or do you wish they had stuck with the original story and built a sequel?

It has been a long time coming but at E3 this year, Bethesda finally announced its return to the Prey franchise. However, instead of a continuation of the story in the first game, Arkane Studios is putting together its own take on the IP, with a brand new game that will have “no tie” to the original.

Similarly to DICE’s new Mirror’s Edge game, Prey won’t be a sequel or a remake of the original but rather, a “reimagining”. The trailer we got at E3 looked great but it didn’t give us a ton of details, so this week Arkane Studios, the team behind the reboot, released a video titled “What is Prey?”, which explains what is going on with the franchise.

prey

In the video Arkane head, Raphael Colantonio, confirmed that the upcoming Prey will have no connection to the original cult hit: “Prey is not a sequel, it's not a remake, it has no tie with the original. You have to look at it like a re-imagining of the IP.”

He also explained that Prey is very much going to feel like an ‘Arkane-made’ game, with plenty of story, action and an RPG layer with player choice. So we can expect multiple weapons, but also powers learned from the aliens. Right now, the game is apparently on track for a 2017 release but we have no exact date just yet.

It looks like we might get our first look at the sequel to Dishonored at Gamescom next month if recent rumors are to be believed. Bethesda has hinted at turning the hit game in to a franchise but we haven't had any concrete information as of yet.

The sequel is said to be called Dishonored II: Darkness of Tyvia, the possible cover art shows us a faded drawing of Corvo's famous mask from the first game. However, we might not end up playing as the old protagonist this time around.

dishonored_2_darkness_of_tyvia_full

NowGamer managed to get a hold of an ‘inside source', claiming that the game will be revealed at Gamescom next month. Arkane Lyon is the studio in charge of the game as the company's US studio is said to be working on Prey 2, a rumor that publisher Bethesda has previously denied.

The source wasn't able to confirm the game's main protagonist but Arkane Studios reportedly considered giving the player control of Empress Emily Kaldwin, who you save in the first game. Such a move would suggest a later time period compared to the original title.

While the game might be announced next month, it probably won't come out until late next year, which will be three years after the launch of Dishonored.

Sony upped the ante for the next-generation of consoles when it announced last month that it's PlayStation 4 would come equipped with a whopping 8GB of RAM – more than most gaming PCs – and developers are more than a little pleased.

Speaking about it with Eurogamer, is Dishonored's lead level designer, Christophe Carrier: “As a level designer we are struggling against memory every day. We cut things, we remove things, we strip things, we split the levels, we remove NPCs from levels because there's not enough memory.”

“So knowing that memory is something that is going to be improved in the next generation of consoles: to us, it's a joy. It's something that we were waiting for. We were PC gamers at the beginning. We love PC games, and we had to make games on consoles. But the main problem was memory. The processors are good, but the memory, for our games, is the most important. So it's great.”

In comparison with Sony's next-gen offering, the Xbox 360 and PS3 have 512MB a piece and in the former's case, it was going to be 256MB until Epic Games convinced Microsoft to up it to 512MB so that Gears of War could be made for it.

Christophe
Christophe Carrier was the brain behind much of Dishonoured's level design

When asked about the future of the studio – Arkane – Carrier spoke a little about keeping grounded after all the praise of the original Dihonoured.

“We will try to stick to our culture, we will try to stick to our values, creating a fairly small team compared to the others in the industry, and keep all our values around fashion, game design, art,” he said.

“That's the future of Arkane. We make games because we like games; we want to make games we want to play. We will always do that. We're not going to change our philosophy or the way we make games. I'm not saying we're going to – we're not going to make the same game over and over, but we're going to stick to our passion. That's something that kept us going so. I think that's our strength.”

KitGuru Says: 8GB is a nice chunk for sure, but I guarantee in two years time when we're all rocking 16GB because it's cheap as anything, we'll see consoles as obsolete once again.
