Batman Arkham Origins has finally knocked GTA V off of the top of the sales chart this weekend, but it's sold only around half of the copies that Arkham City managed to push when it was released back in 2011. That said, the numbers are comparable to the original Asylum's, so that's hardly something to sniff at.

As Eurogamer points out, these sales numbers make the biggest ever Batman game in the UK, Lego Batman: The Videogame.

“WHERE ARE THE OTHER GAMES GOING?!”

Origins has struggled a little in the build up to its release, despite a continued dark tone, improved visuals and combat system over the previous look-ins at the Dark Knight's escapades. The problem stems from the developer change. While Rocksteady Studios developed both the original Arkham Asylum and its critically acclaimed sequel, Arkham City, the prequel in the series, Origins, was handed off to Warner Bros Montreal. While it seems to have done a pretty good job according to reviews, some have criticised the fact that the game doesn't really evolve the series in the way that City managed to.

With Origins taking the top slot in the rankings however, GTA V has now been pushed into second, with FIFA 14, Skylanders: Swap Porce and the two new Pokemon games (X followed by Y) taking up the following few places.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you tried Arkham Origins yet? If you have, how does it stack up against he previous games?

Despite two Batman games giving fans of the caped crusader a chance to smash thug skulls into pavements with gauntletted fists time and time again, Warner Bros doesn't think players have hit that level of Dark Knight skill that would let them really feel like Batman. To help that, in the next iteration of the series, there will be a training area in the Batcave where players can practice their skills.

This makes sense thematically too, since Origins is an origin story (surprise!) where Batman is going from billionaire to crime fighter throughout the game, therefore having an area to practice his combat mechanics and abilities, will let players improve their own skills along with Wayne's, levelling him up and unlocking new abilities.

The inclusion of said area, was announced by Warner Bros' Montreal senior producer Ben Mattes at an Nvidia conference, where he said he wanted players to feel even more bad ass than they have done in the past. “We want players to be awesome at this game before they’ve finished it, so that they can have that very empowering experience of being Batman right at the heart of these central, meaningful events that are happening in our game’s story.”

The only downside to this might be that players are better with Batman at this point in his career than they were in City, which took place years later. Hmm.

To watch some footage of the game in action at the Nvidia show, head here and skip forward to about the two hour mark.

KitGuru Says: Mattes does have a point. While I didn't finish Arkham City, throughout my playthrough of that and Asylum, I pretty much just punch jumped between enemies and rarely used any of the gadgets mid-swing. But then again, Batman himself would have spent thousands of hours honing his skills. There isn't a game that's ever been made which could hold my attention for that long.

It's been a long time since people like me got excited by Ageia's new PhysX cards, with its tech demo games like Cell Factor, but that doesn't mean that the PhysX technology isn't still important. Granted now all you need is an Nvidia GPU, but if you're part of the green team, you'll get more fancy graphical effects when you pick up Batman: Arkham Origins later this year.

Some of the effects on show are pretty basic stuff, like flickering fire and some floating paper scraps, but the big game changer is the atmospheric fog. It swirls around Batman and his enemies, reacting, as you move through it, or to the dead body you drop to the floor. It also moves around the environment, dropping down from platforms and moving around at the behest of air currents.

Other PhysX effects include added snow particles, which really add to the feel of an icy environment. When this is combined with DX11 tessellation, you get footprints in the snow that cast their own shadows internally, looking far more life like.

KitGuru Says: This doesn't look as “next-gen” as some games we've seen trailers for recently, but it looks very pretty indeed and could be one of the last, great looking games of this generation, along with GTA V and Watchdogs.
