Western Digital has announced the ArmorLock Security Platform, a “next-gen” security system for data storage. The first storage solution to feature this technology will be the new G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD, a portable drive for data storage for those who want to secure their content on-the-go.

Much of the security industry has been focused on improving security systems in the cloud, but “critical commercial content” in portable storage devices are still in danger of being hijacked and leaked. Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of consumer solutions and products at Western Digital, said that the ArmorLock Security Platform was built to mitigate this risk by enabling “data privacy without hampering data availability while helping to protect against data breaches”. By combining ArmorLock with Western Digital “world-class NVMe SSD products”, Jim Welsh believes that the company is “addressing the real pain points” that customers face when trying to secure their data without sacrificing their availability and ease-of-access.

The result of combining ArmorLock with Western Digital SSDs is the G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD. Available with 2TB of storage capacity, this SSD delivers read/write speeds of up to 1GB/s via its SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps interface. This SSD features 256-bit AES-XTS hardware encryption for maximum security and is rated with IP67 dust/water resistance, 3M drop protection, and 1000lb (≈450Kg) crush resistance to ensure that you don't lose your data to accidents.

This easy-to-use SSD can be unlocked wirelessly with a smartphone through the ArmorLock app, using face recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN. To avoid halting your workflow, the PINs are not taped to the drive. The ArmorLock apps for mobile and desktop also allow managers to configure the permissions of users who have access to these drives. Other interesting features of this drive include a tracking mechanism to locate the drive, “in-field updates”, and a simple way to securely erase and reformat the drive.

The G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD is available now for £559.99. The ArmorLock app for iOS and macOS is also available to download for free. You can learn more about this storage solution HERE.

KitGuru says: Do you work with sensitive data on your computer? Would you consider the G-Technology ArmorLock encrypted NVMe SSD to add an extra layer of security on your data?
