Using a similar technique to Google when it taught its Deepmind network to play Atari games, two researchers from Carnegie Mellon university have created a self-taught Doom bot which became the most efficient killer at a recent competition. Known affectionately as Arnold, the bot placed second in the end, though it walked away with the best kill to death ratio.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgndlFybEho']

The difference between bots at the Visual Doom AI Competition (thanks Kotaku) and say your average cheating bot in other games, is that these ones were only able to use the information on the screen in front of them and their memory of recent screens. Essentially, they had to act like real players. That's what makes Arnold so impressive, because it behaves like a really efficient human player.

Admittedly so do most of the bots on show during this contest, though some of them do appear to get stuck on the odd wall, or spin in place as they try and get a bead on an enemy. In reality it still seems likely that most of these bots would be wrecked by an efficient human player.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94EPSjQH38Y']

But they are getting smarter and that's the point. These bots can continue to get better forever, they have the time to play Doom all day, every day. Their different memory functions are able to keep them learning from their mistakes and remembering what they do scene to scene so they can hunt down the opposition that much more efficiently.

Arnold suddenly seems like quite a fitting name for the most efficient killing machine.

KitGuru Says: This is the kind of AI that you want people developing, as it at least puts you on an even playing field with them. If they can wall hack and have 100 per cent accuracy, then what's the point?

Who needs working legs when you can combine all of the horrifying names from sci-fi movies where robots went awry and create a set of robo-legs that walk for you? That's exactly what the Cyberdeyne HAL system is and it utilised Intel hardware to become a reality.

As nefarious as HAL sounds, it's actually an acronym for Hybrid Assistive Living and offers cyborg like robotic assistance to those with missing or damaged limbs. The half-body walking assistant hooks on to your hips and limbs – if you have them – and can essentially walk for you, detecting your own motion desires to do so.

halcyber

This works through a use of what's known as bio-electric-signals (BES), which can be detected faintly on the skin. When you tell your legs to move, the device can detect that and augment your own movements (or replace them) in real time.

While this near-Iron-Man-like technology has been under development for some time, it's only recently that it's become more viable. The HAL suit is capable of supporting a person up to 86Kg (176lbs) in weight and can work for between 60 and 90 minutes at a time.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAHWPjnFbUc']

However there are variants on the design. A single limb support version can replace or augment lower or single legs and those can last up to two hours at a time. The company behind the hardware, Japanese firm Cyberdyne Inc., also produces a full body version which is designed for use in disaster relief scenarios or potentially for those with full body paralyses.

What part does Intel play in the whole thing? There's an Atom CPU inside the HAL system, powering it all (thanks HotHardware).

KitGuru Says: This is unbelievably cool. People with difficulties walking or performing other tasks which would traditionally be very debilitating, will soon not have that sort of problem thanks to hardware like this.

Although fans of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) may be saddened to hear that industry legend Hulk Hogan will not be appearing in any future WWE games due to his recently reported racist outburst in a privately recorded call, perhaps they'll be placated by the fact that The Terminator is being made available to those that pre-order. But which one you might be asking? The T1000? The T-X? Of course not, it's the classic T-850 Infiltration Unit, played by the original, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I need your clothes, your boots, and your WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt

“I’ve achieved many things in my life, but I’ve always said success means staying hungry and pushing the limits,” said Schwarzenegger. “I was honoured to join the WWE Hall of Fame earlier this year, and now I’ll continue my WWE legacy with one of my biggest film roles immortalized in WWE 2K16. Match the Terminator against Stone Cold Steve Austin, Seth Rollins or Daniel Bryan, and there’s only one possible outcome: Hasta la vista, baby!”

To help promote it, they even recreated the iconic opening scene from T2-Judgement Day, but with wrestlers:

While it might not make too much sense for a cybernetic organism, with living tissue over its metal endoskeleton to take part in a wrestling match. Ask yourself if leprechauns, undead wizards and demons should be either. Plus, Arnold is a member of the WWE hall of fame, and has been beating the crap out of wrestlers for decades already.

WWE 2k16 is available to pre-order now, and goes on sale internationally on the 30th October on PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

KitGuru Says: Does this make up for WWE discarding Hulk Hogan like it's doing? If this was still the attitude era, Vince probably would have made a story about it.

Omaze, the site that works like a mashup of a charity auction and Kickstarter, may still be in beta, but that doesn't mean it isn't bringing in big names to help good causes. The latest addition to its roster of potential experiences, is hanging out with, working out with and driving a tank with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He also dressed up with a set of fake hair and moustache, because why not?

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LUv3kbmNfg']

To be in with a chance of getting in bed with Arnold (figuratively, no guarantee of actual bedding is given) for the day, you'll need to buy a raffle ticket on Omaze's site. Each ticket you buy, gives you a certain reward, as well as a single entrance into the prize draw to see who will win the experience. However, the more you pledge, the cheaper the tickets are and the immediate rewards go up too.

Some of the prizes on offer include an autographed picture of Arnold in his bodybuilding prime, arm bands, tshirts with tanks on and for those willing to drop a lot of money down, say $20,000 – how annoyed would you be if you didn't win at that point – you can get an autographed, limited edition Conan sword.

“Get to da charity auction!”

This is all to benefit the After School All Stars organisation, which helps kids with after school programs year round. Arnold's big part in it is that he likes their fitness regimes and sports programs.

KitGuru Says: Bear in mind if you're thinking of entering, the winner gets to go with a friend too and you'll be able to take pictures, so you'll be able to say you hung out with Arnold for the day AND have a witness to prove it.

If you've been sat there with your Android smartphone, seething with envy at how your Apple equipped pals can send each other six second videos of them being as nonsensical as they are on other social outlets, see red no longer my friends, as Vine just hit Android.

Despite being essentially an animated GIF (or is that Jif?) creation service with sound, Vine has racked up a massive user base in less than half a year – more than 13 million so far. It's helped spawn short, concise movie trailers, in-depth looks at international events, somehow more poignant for the repetition and comedians doing awesome Arnold impressions.

In order to get the new app to run, you'll need Android 4.0 or later. It's available now from the Google Play store. Updates are expected to be forthcoming at a reasonable rate, as at the moment the app is a little behind the Apple version in terms of functionality. However, one feature that is at the moment, unique to Android is Zoom.

Some of the features coming in the next few weeks include: “front-facing camera, search, mentions and hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook,” reads the Twitter blog post.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you big Vine users? Kind of like Twitter, I doubt I'd use it unless I had something interesting to say.
