At present, only MicroStar International offers platforms for AMD processors with USB 3.1 type-A connectors. By contrast, virtually all leading makers of motherboards now sell mainboards for current-generation Intel processors with the new bus. Apparently, Advanced Micro Devices wants to change that.

In a bid to catch up with Intel Corp. when it comes to platform features, Advanced Micro Devices plans to offer its partners a USB 3.1 controller to install it on mainboards designed for its processors. While the chip will carry AMD brand, it will be a rebadged version of Asmedia’s USB 3.1 controller that has been available for some time.

AMD intends to sell its partners its AMDUA3102A USB 3.1 controller along with its chipsets, reports BenchLife. The chip is a rebadged version of Asmedia’s ASM1142 host controller used by numerous makers of mainboards. The solution will cost $4 per unit and all volume discounts for AMD’s partners will apply.

Selling Asmedia’s controller will likely help AMD to slightly increase its revenues.

Intel recently introduced its code-named “Alpine Ridge” controller that enables USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Last year AMD reportedly signed an agreement with Asmedia over development of core-logic sets. Apparently, for now AMD will only offer rebranded chips by Asmedia, not exclusive chipsets developed for Advanced Micro Devices.

Sharkoon, a well-known maker of personal computer peripherals, has introduced a new host controller card that adds two type-A USB 3.1 ports to existing PCs. The card is compatible with all mainboards in use today and will reach retail market shortly. Unfortunately, the card is not exactly perfect.

Sharkoon’s USB 3.1 host controller card is based on the Asmedia ASM1142 controller chip and features two USB 3.1 type-A ports with 10Gb/s (1.25GB/s) maximum transfer rate. The card features a SATA power connector to support charging of demanding devices. Unfortunately, in a bid to ensure maximum compatibility of the product, Sharkoon decided to sacrifice the card’s maximum performance. The controller comes in PCI Express x1 form-factor and can be plugged into any mainboard with PCIe 2.0 x1 (500MB/s) or PCIe 3.0 x1 (985MB/s) slots, but under no circumstances it will provide the full SuperSpeed+ USB 3.1 bandwidth of 1.25GB/s even for a single device. The card comes with drivers for Microsoft Windows 7 and 8.

Even though a number of motherboard manufacturers have introduced their own host controller cards that add USB 3.1 with type-A or type-C receptacles, usually such boards are sold with mainboards. Asustek Computer does offers its USB 3.1 type-A PCIe 3.0 x4 card (which runs in x2 mode) separately, but the product is not available widely. There are also a number of USB 3.1 host adapters from unknown Chinese manufacturers, which are sold in select stores in the U.S.

While the USB 3.1 host controller card from Sharkoon cannot deliver all the benefits of USB 3.1 and lack reversible type-C receptacles, it can be the first product of such kind from a well-known peripheral brand that will actually become available widely. Sharkoon has a long list of partners both in Europe and the U.S., hence, the card will be up for sale shortly.

The Sharkoon USB 3.1 host controller card has the suggested retail price of €34.99 (around £25).

KitGuru Says: Sharkoon’s USB 3.1 host controller card is not exactly fast and is not exactly affordable. However, if you desperately need a USB 3.1 controller and cannot find Asustek’s USB 3.1 type-A PCIe 3.0 card near you (which actually uses the same ASM1142 chip and also has a number of limitations), then the solution from Sharkoon may be a thing to consider.

Asrock has announced two mainboards with USB 3.1 interconnection technologies. The motherboards will support Intel Corp.’s processors and will add USB 3.1 connectors using add-in-cards. It is unclear whether the boards will be sold separately to add USB 3.1 support to older systems.

The family of Asrock’s mainboards with USB 3.1 includes two models: the Z97 Extreme6/3.1 and the X99 Extreme 6/3.1, which support Intel processors in LGA1150 and LGA2011-3 form-factors, respectively. Both motherboards feature sophisticated voltage regulation modules to provide advanced overclocking capabilities, they also support for multi-GPU configurations as well as offer rich input/output capabilities.

The add-in USB 3.1 card for the Asrock Z97 Extreme6/3.1 supports 10Gb/s transfer rates and requires a PCI Express 2.0 x4 slot and a power connector to operate. The card features one type-A (regular) and one type-C (reversible) connectors to ensure compatibility with all USB 3.1 implementations.

The USB 3.1 card for the Asrock X99 Extreme6/3.1 has the same features and requirements, but has two type-A connectors. The motherboard itself supports one USB 3.1 type-C connector.

It is believed that both add-in-cards use an Asmedia USB 3.1 controller.

It is unknown when the new mainboards hit the market, but expect them to arrive shortly. Since currently implementation of the USB 3.1 requires additional chips, expect platforms with the new interconnection to cost noticeably more than regular motherboards without the SuperSpeed+ USB 3.1.

KitGuru Says: The implementation of USB 3.1 using add-on cards does not seem to be very optimal, but at present it is the easiest and the most affordable way of adding the USB 3.1. Therefore, expect mainboard makers and some PC suppliers to adopt it.

Although the USB 3.1 standard with a new reversible plug, higher performance and other improvements have been around for about a year now, no commercial PCs so far have adopted it. However, things are going to change soon, when Asustek Computer launches its motherboards with the new interconnection technology.

The world’s largest maker of motherboards plans to release mainboards with USB 3.1 support as early as in the coming weeks, late in February. DigiTimes reports that Asus plans to use Asmedia’s ASM1142 host controller for its USB 3.1 implementation. The chip takes two PCIe 2.0 lanes from the core logic and converts them into USB 3.1 ports, which means that the solution will hardly achieve full 10Gb/s bandwidth, but will offer something like 8Gb/s.

At present it is unclear how many mainboards featuring USB 3.1 Asus plans to release, but it is logical to expect the company’s flagship models based on the Intel Z97 and the Intel X99 core-logic sets to get the new interconnection. It is also likely that the USB 3.1 will be implemented using both type-A (regular) and type-C (reversible) connectors.

MicroStar International also plans to launch two motherboards with USB 3.1 in the coming months. Check out KitGuru’s hands-on preview of the USB 3.1 in MSI’s implementation HERE. By contrast, Gigabyte Technology will only offer platforms with USB 3.1 in the second half of the year.

It is interesting to note that at present there are no USB 3.1 host controllers certified by the USB Implementers Forum.

Asustek did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While it will be good to finally have USB 3.1-supporting mainboards on the market, it is necessary to note that their owners will not benefit from the technology just yet. There are no peripherals that support USB 3.1’s 10Gb/s transfer rate or feature the type-C connector today. On the other hand, someone should start making USB 3.1-supporting hardware first…
