The 5GHz frequency milestone for computer memory is yet to be achieved, but professional overclockers are probably not far from hitting it. This week Chi-Kui Lam, a well-known computer tweaker, managed to push a DDR4 memory module from G.Skill to whopping 4.90GHz.

Chi-Kui Lam overclocked a 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory module to record 4901.6MHz with CL21 31-31-63-2 timings. The module operated in single-channel mode, which is why the record clock-rate has little practical meaning: all modern memory sub-systems are multi-channel.

To set the record, the overclocker used an engineering sample of Intel Core i7-6700K “Skylake” processor downclocked to 2371.6MHz with three cores disabled. He also used an Asrock Z170 OC Formula mainboard as well as a 1300W power supply unit. The microprocessor and the module were cooled-down using liquid nitrogen.

Without any doubts, 4.90GHz is a great achievement that demonstrates potential of modern microprocessors, memory modules and mainboards. However, since Intel’s “Skylake” processors have dual-channel memory controllers, it makes more sense to use them with two moderately clocked memory modules than with one that runs at an extreme frequency. To date, the highest DDR4 clock-rate that has been hit by a dual-channel memory sub-system is 4.60GHz.

KitGuru Says: 4901.6MHz is actually 63.6MHz faster than the previous DDR4 record set a week ago. Perhaps, in a couple of weeks’ time someone will finally manage to hit the “magic” 5GHz mark.

A professional overclocker has set a new record for Intel Core i7-6700K microprocessor frequency. This time the new code-named “Skylake” processor hit nearly 7GHz, which is among the highest frequencies ever achieved by any Intel Core i-series microprocessors.

Chi-Kui Lam, a professional overclocker from Hong Kong-based HKEPC web-site, has managed to overclock an engineering sample of the Intel Core i7-6700K “Skylake-S” microprocessor to 6998.88MHz, or by whopping 74.97 per cent compared to its stock frequency. To hit nearly 7GHz, the overclocker had to disable three cores out of four and the Hyper-Threading technology. Voltage of the processor was increased from 1.2V to 1.888V.

To set the record, Chi-Kui Lam used a testbed featuring Asrock Z170 OC Formula mainboard, a G.Skill Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory module as well as a 1300W power supply unit. The processor was cooled-down using liquid nitrogen (LN2).

The Asrock Z170 OC Formula is a premium platform for overclockers designed by Asrock and Nick Shih. The motherboard features 17-phase voltage regulator module for microprocessor that is based on high-end solid-state chokes and capacitors. The motherboard has sophisticated capabilities for overclocking and expansion. The platform sports four PCI Express 16 slots for graphics cards or solid-state drives, three high-performance M.2 (PCIe 3.0 x4) connectors for SSDs, two SATA Express connectors, USB 3.1 and so on.

KitGuru Says: 7GHz clock-rate is clearly achievable by Intel Core i7-6700K “Skylake” processor. What remains to be seen is whether retail versions of chips will actually manage to hit 5GHz clock-rates with commercially available cooling systems and all four cores active. Extreme overclocking shows that the chips do have potential, but the value of a single-core CPU nowadays is negligible…

The new Intel Corp.’s Core i7-6700K “Skylake” processors have clearly helped professional overclockers to set new DDR4 frequency records. G.Skill on Thursday said that one of its Ripjaws 4 memory modules managed to hit nearly 4.8GHz clock-rate earlier this week.

Chi-Kui Lam, a world-class overclocker from Hong Kong-based HKEPC, successfully overclocked a 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory module to whopping 4795.8MHz with CL21 31-31-63 timings. The module operated in single-channel mode (i.e., the whole system did not really make a lot of sense from practical point of view).

The record-setting test-bed was based on an engineering sample of Intel Core i7-6700K processor as well as Asrock Z170 OC Formula mainboard. The processor was downclocked to 928MHz, three out of four cores as well as Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology were disabled. The CPU and the module were cooled-down using liquid nitrogen.

4.60GHz – 4.80GHz clock-rate records set by DDR4 memory modules this week are clearly great achievements that demonstrate potential of the DRAM technology and Intel “Skylake” processors. Since G.Skill already offers commercial 4GHz DDR4 modules, it is highly likely that going forward even higher frequencies will be reached.

KitGuru Says: It is interesting to note that the SPD [serial presence detect] of the record-setting G.Skill memory module incorrectly stated its capacity and did not contain any vendor ID. Either the SPD chip was damaged by liquid nitrogen, or the module was hand-made and did not feature a standard SPD.
