For many of our readers a router is a device that will be provided by an ISP (such as Virgin or BT) but for others it is the central hub of a multimedia environment. Whichever the case is it is an essential part of any modern household. This is especially true since the rapid advances in smartphones and tablets which are requiring ever faster wireless connections.

Some households in the UK are now at the stage where they may have more than ten internet connected devices. I, for instance, have six devices that I use regularly to access the internet, whether it to watch TV, check my email or even write this review. Other homes are likely to have at least three or four devices active at any given time.

It goes without saying that an ever increasing demand is put on a router and as such having the latest model is usually a worthwhile investment.

Today's router up for review, is the ASUS RT-N66U Dual Band Wireless N900 which is capable of transferring up to 900 Mbps across the two bands, this is certainly a large step up from your more humble N300 router that your ISP will supply you with (if you are lucky).

Wireless routers are now an essential part of any household, connecting Desktop Computers, Games Consoles, Media Servers, Laptops, Tablets and Phones to your home network and more importantly the internet. With this many devices connecting to the internet, a fast wireless router is a key investment for a media-savvy household.

The ASUS RT-AC66U is a 5th generation dual-band Wi-Fi router, which can reach a combined data transfer speed of 1.75 Gbps – all without wires. While there aren't many devices out there that can connect at full-speed, it is of course backwards compatible and as such is future proof.
