Persona 3 Reload released last month to a wave of critical and commercial success – quickly becoming the biggest ATLUS game on Steam. That said, one of the remake’s core complaints comes in its lack of Persona 3 Portable content – in particular the female main character. Following the announcement of Reload’s upcoming DLC, the dev team have apologised for the omission.

As shared by Persona Central, in the most recent issue of Persona Magazine general producer Kazuhisa Wada and director Yu Hashizume sat down to discuss the recently-announced Episode Aegis DLC.

Veering off topic slightly, the devs were asked “The fans were hoping for Episode Aigis to be remade as expanded content to P3R, but another thing that P3 fans have been hoping for is the implementation of the female protagonist from P3P into P3R. Is there a possibility of this happening?” to which Wada responded:

“I'll begin with an apology, but unfortunately, the appearance of the female protagonist in P3R will not happen. Of course, we considered the inclusion of the female protagonist alongside Episode Aigis, but the more we delved into it, the more hopeless it seemed… The development time and costs would likely be two to three times that of Episode Aigis, making it challenging to entrust entirely to external companies and exceeding our capabilities.”

Wada continued, claiming that even if both P3R and Episode Aegis were to be smash hits, the team’s desire and expectations to look forward and focus on future projects means that it simply will not happen. While a shame, fans of Reload wanting more from the world of Persona 3 will still have the PSP game to go back to.

It has been a couple of years since Atlus brought Shin Megami Tensei V to the Nintendo Switch. The mainline series that preceded the Persona games is back in the news again this week, with Atlus announcing plans to bring the game to even more platforms, complete with a big expansion.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is launching on the 21st of June for Nintendo Switch, as well as PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC, continuing Atlus's streak of bringing its beloved RPGs to more platforms.

Players can expect improved gameplay systems and quality of life features, as well as over 40 new demons to encounter and new story beats. There will be two story modes available in this version of the game, and Atlus reckons it will take players around 80 hours to complete each one, making for a total of 160 hours of gameplay for full completion.

Unfortunately, players who already beat the original game on Switch will not be able to carry their save forward to the new version due to various story adjustments and changes. We'll have to wait and see just how different the new version plays out and how it compares to the original.

Persona 3 Reload released last week to a wave of success, with the remake of the PS2 classic becoming the most played ATLUS game on Steam at launch. It seems as though the studio has many more Persona projects in the works, with remakes of both Persona 2 and 4 said to be in development.

As reported by known ATLUS insider ‘MbKKssTBhz5’, in response to a number of fans on Twitter who asked about possible Persona 2 and 4 remakes, the leaker revealed that “Both exist at Atlus.”

Though no additional context was given, Midori did previously report on the state of Persona remakes, claiming back in July of last year that Persona 3 Reload was the only remake currently in development. It seems as though the Persona 2 and 4 projects have therefore been relatively recent conceptions – meaning we will likely be waiting quite a while for them.

While Persona 4 still holds up in many ways – especially following its remaster a couple years ago – the 2nd Persona game is much further removed from the current format of the JRPG series, and so a from-the-ground-up remake would be greatly appreciated.

While some games need it more than others, hopefully this latest report means that pretty much all mainline Persona games are set to be remade eventually.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the report? Would you play a Persona 4 remake? What about P2? Let us know down below.

For decades, the Persona series remained exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation platforms. Back in 2020 however the PS Vita exclusive Persona 4 Golden was remastered for the PC. Since then, many more ATLUS titles have been added to the platform – to great success. Even so, the release of Persona 3 Reload represents the best launch for the studio in its history on Steam.

Persona 3 Reload released over the weekend to a great deal of anticipation. Being the first mainline title to launch since the series went multiplatform, the remake has unsurprisingly done very well across the board. Thanks to Steam’s more open policies, we now know that P3R has become the biggest ATLUS game on the platform, with 45,002 concurrent players.

Of course, while this is in no way a record-breaking number of players for Steam as a whole, the figure remains impressive – especially for a single-player title.

For comparison’s sake, the second-most-concurrently-played ATLUS title was Persona 5 Royal (with 35,474 concurrents); followed by the aforementioned Persona 4 Golden (29,984 players) – and bringing up the rear are the two spin offs: P5 Strikers (8,730 concurrents) and P4 Arena Ultimax (7,099 players).

While it’s certainly a full-blown remake, it will be interesting to see just how much larger Persona 6 winds up being when it is eventually announced and released.

Following the success of Persona 5, ATLUS have been pushed into the limelight, with the studio tackling new games, IPs and platforms. According to one insider, ATLUS is currently working on multiple games for Netflix.

As shared by a notable ATLUS leaker, the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei creators are reportedly “developing multiple titles for the Netflix mobile game platform,” with the insider adding that “One of these titles are related to Shin Megami Tensei series.”

Over the past few years Netflix has accumulated a rather healthy library of games on its service, ranging from ports of console games to titles based on their own original shows. As mentioned by the leaker, at least one of these titles will be based on the studio’s popular Shin Megami Tensei series.

That said, it is currently unknown whether this title will be developed specifically for Netflix or if ATLUS are working on porting some of their pre-existing titles – perhaps earlier entries in the series.

While Netflix’s game library does feature a decent amount of shovelware, the streaming service has put greater emphasis on bringing quality titles to the service over time. Just some of the best include Death’s Door; TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge; Before Your Eyes; Dead Cells; OXENFREE; World of Goo and the recently-added GTA Trilogy. Hopefully ATLUS’ efforts are going towards something substantive.

While the Persona series was a historically a relatively popular JRPG franchise, the 2017 release of Persona 5 put ATLUS on the map in a whole new way. Though the studio has been taking its sweet time with the inevitable Persona 6, the most recent entry has become a successful sub-franchise in its own right – with P5 Selling 10 million copies across its games.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Japanese Persona account shared this latest milestone, saying (as translated by Google) “#P5 series exceeds 10 million copies sold worldwide. To commemorate the big record, a thank you illustration by character designer Shigenori Soejima has also been released! We will continue to look forward to your continued support!”

On its own, Persona 5 (and Royal) has sold 7.2 million copies (as of April 2023), making it by far the best-selling entry in the series. As mentioned though, Persona 5 has had a few spin-offs released since 2017, and while none of them have sold anywhere nearly as many copies as the original, seeing Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight; Strikers and Tactica all help push P5 past 10 million copies is certainly worth celebrating – and makes the notion of selling 5 million copies of Persona 6 in its first year much more likely.

Ever since the overwhelming success of Persona 5 back in 2017, we have seen the cache of the ATLUS JRPG franchise balloon in popularity, with many fans eagerly anticipating the inevitable release of Persona 6. While not yet officially announced by SEGA, the publisher has revealed that it hopes to sell 5 million copies in the game’s first year.

As part of the company’s quarterly earnings report and Q&A , SEGA Sammy’s CEO and CFO (Haruki Atami and Koichi Fukasawa respectively) addressed a number of investor questions, including the future potential of the Persona series, with one person asking “Is there a chance that, with its overseas popularity, the Persona series could sell 5 million copies in its first year?”

In response, the executives stated (via PersonaCentral) “By increasing the number of platforms it is available on and the regions it is released in, we have been increasing the sales of Persona 5. We believe that it would be possible for a major Persona title, such as a numbered release, to sell 5 million copies in its first year by releasing it on multiple platforms and simultaneously worldwide from day one.”

As mentioned, Persona 6 is set to be the first mainline title in the series to launch simultaneously across multiple platforms. Previously, the numbered Persona entries released exclusively on PlayStation.

Since Persona 5 however, we have seen Persona 4 Golden, P5 Royal and most recently Persona 3 come to multiple platforms. It will be interesting to see just how much bigger of a first year Persona 6 will have as a result when it releases.

ATLUS have been going all out with Persona in recent years, with 2017’s Persona 5 having been followed up by a whole host of spin-offs including Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight; Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 5 Tactica – to name a few. According to one prominent leaker, ATLUS still has a few more P5 spin-offs in the works ahead of the eventual announcement of the long-anticipated Persona 6.

As reported by known ATLUS leaker ‘MbKKssTBhz5 the studio is currently working on a number of projects set in the world of Persona. According to the leaker, the long-awaited Persona 6 is currently planned to launch in 2025, with its reveal date having not been decided yet.

Despite this, the studio has yet to squeeze all of the juice out of Persona 5, with a reimagining of the game said to be coming to mobile devices in 2024. Known as Persona 5X, the game will supposedly be released globally as well as in Japan – though no date has been given for the former.

Additionally, 2024 will also see the release of Persona ASA. While little is known about the title currently, it will reportedly be a party game featuring the cast of all prior mainline Persona entries, meaning P1 to P5.

Finally, though not explicitly Persona related, ATLUS are seemingly also working on a new Shin Megami Tensei game – though considering how long SMT4 took to come out, don’t expect this successor for quite some time.

While some fans bemoan the fact that the Persona series always sees a bunch of spin-offs made, putting the excellent cast and characters from the JRPG into different situations and genres is always fun to see.

Sega and Atlus will host a “special broadcast” at TGS on September 21st at 11AM BST. The stream will be part of a monthly broadcast held on the Sega YouTube channel, so we can expect to see other games from Sega as a whole and not just updates on new or upcoming Atlus titles.

Atlus already has Persona 5 Tactica launching in October and Persona 3 Reload arriving in February 2024. Atlus also has a completely new JRPG in the works, titled Metaphor: ReFantazio, although a release date has not yet been announced.  Additionally, Sega has titles like Sonic Superstars and Yakuza 8 on the way.

The mainline Persona series has historically been tightly tied to the PlayStation platform, with all previous entries launching as PlayStation console exclusives. That said, following the release of Persona 5 in 2017, we have seen many of the prior titles come to other platforms – including the latest Persona 5 Royal and the upcoming Persona 3 remake. According to one insider the era of PlayStation exclusive Persona games is over, with the inevitable Persona 6 said to be coming day-one to Xbox.

As reported by known industry insider Shpeshal Nick, the as-of-yet-unannounced Persona 6 will come to Xbox platforms at the same time as PlayStation, saying in their latest podcast episode:

“I had heard the rumours that Persona 6–Sony was trying to lock it up apparently…not according to the DM I just got. I just got a DM that said it’s coming to Xbox day-one.”

Shpeshal Nick has been the source of many leaks and rumours over the past few years, and as such it is safe to say that this leak has some weight behind it.

As mentioned by Nick themselves, previous rumours (by another insider ‘Nate the Hate’) claimed that Persona 6 would be a PlayStation exclusive. We reported on this back in May, and so either the initial rumour was off or plans have changed since then. It is worth noting that at the time Nate did state that Persona 6 would ‘likely’ be a PS5 exclusive, meaning the deal between Sony and ATLUS seemingly ended up falling through.

Persona 5 was huge for both Sony and ATLUS, with the game putting the series on the map in a whole new way – in many cases surpassing its parent-franchise ‘Shin Megami Tensei’ in popularity.

Of course, these leaks are just that – leaks – and so we will have to wait for official confirmation from SEGA/ATLUS themselves. That said, the dream of a new Persona game releasing in a multiplatform manner is more real today than it was yesterday.

Persona 3 Reload is a full-on remake of the iconic JRPG which first released for the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2006. Since then, times have changed and AAA developers seem to have adopted the $70 video game as a standard. It seems as though ATLUS are following suit with the upcoming Persona 3 Remake.

Persona 3 Reload was first announced at the Xbox Games Showcase during the recent Summer Game Fest. We have since gotten a decent amount of information on the game. Unfortunately one thing which we do not yet know is how much the title will cost when it launches sometime next year.

While things can of course change, it seems as though ATLUS is planning on setting the price of Persona 3 Reload at $70. This is thanks to a survey released by SEGA (and shared by ResetEra user ‘Angie’) which asks users to provide feedback on the game’s description for the upcoming Persona 3 Reload. Interestingly, next to the title of the game is what appears to be a price listing for the game, announcing the remake as a $70 title.

Of course, P3 Reload would not be the first $70 remake, but considering the fact that the game is also coming to last-gen devices, it does beg the question as to whether Persona 3 Reload can justify its cost. We will have to wait and see.

While many of us anticipated Persona 3 Reload to be confirmed for Nintendo Switch during today's Direct showcase, this was unfortunately not the case. We did get a new trailer for Persona 5 Tactica though, which is coming to Switch later this year alongside other platforms.

While we already got a good look at Persona 5 Tactica during the Xbox Games Showcase, today's trailer gives us a look at the Switch version:

While I'm not usually a big fan of Persona spin-offs, Tactica does look like a great game and the exact sort of thing I'd sink many hours in on the Switch – I just need to finish up Octopath Traveler II before then.

Earlier this week, an unlisted video on the Atlus YouTube channel seemed to indicate that Persona 3 Reload would be coming to Nintendo Switch. The game has only been announced for Xbox, PC and PlayStation so far. Unfortunately for the time being, the situation will remain that way.

Now, it would seem that Persona 3 Reload will also be released for Switch.

So far, Atlus has only confirmed that Persona 5 Tactica will be coming to Switch. Rumours have been claiming that Nintendo and Atlus may be holding off on announcing Persona 3 Reload for the Switch, saving the announcement for an unannounced Nintendo Direct. Now, it would seem that those rumours were right on the money.

Fans spotted an unlisted version of the Persona 3 Reload trailer on YouTube, which listed Nintendo Switch as one of the supported platforms in the video description. A couple of hours after this information hit the web, Atlus updated the video page to remove mention of the Switch.

This seems to indicate that Persona 3 Reload will be announced for the Switch during an upcoming Nintendo Direct. Something similar occurred last year, when Persona 5, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable were announced for PC and PlayStation, with confirmation of the Switch release arriving a month later during a Nintendo Direct.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: There is always the chance that this was an error and that Persona 3 Reload was cancelled for Switch, but that outcome seems unlikely. If a Nintendo Direct is announced for July, then I think we can safely assume Persona 3 Reload will be amongst the announced games.

With Persona 5 first launching all the way back in 2016, many fans have been eagerly awaiting for news on its sequel. Don’t expect this any time soon, as ATLUS have now confirmed that almost the entirety of the P5R team moved over to work on the upcoming Persona 3 Reload.

In an interview conducted by 4Gamer (and translated by Twitter user @MbKKssTBhz5 ‘Midori’), ATLUS revealed a bunch of information on the development of Persona 3 Reload, saying “We’ve had the idea for this project for quite some time, but we didn’t actually start working on it until late 2019.”

They continued, “A few of us started working on it towards the end of development on P5R. But after development of P5R had ended, almost all of those members became the P3R development team. It was like sliding from P5R into P3R.”

Persona 3 Reload is a full from-the-ground-up remake, with visuals, gameplay and more being wholly revamped – including the voice overs, which are getting fresh recordings from a host of new actors.

All that said, with Persona 5 first releasing almost 7 years ago, it is understandable to see why some fans are getting antsy waiting for the next mainline entry. Hopefully P3R is able to satiate the need for more Persona. A translation of the full interview can be found HERE.

At the Xbox Games Showcase last week, Atlus unveiled a trio of new games, including Persona 5 Tactica, Persona 3 Reload and a brand new fantasy RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio. We've already had confirmation that both Persona games will be coming to other platforms outside of Xbox and PC. Now, Metaphor: ReFantazio has been confirmed as a multiplatform game too.

Aside from Xbox and PC, Metaphor: ReFantazio will also be released on PlayStation consoles. This particular title will be skipping Nintendo Switch for the time being at least.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a very different game for Atlus. Created by Atlus Studio Zero, this is their first foray into the high-fantasy genre, so expect magic, monsters and plenty of medieval scenery.

Previous Atlus games have primarily focused on real-world locations. There is no release date yet for Metaphor: ReFantazio but the game is expected to launch later in 2024.

As we head into Summer Game Fest, many fans are wondering what may and might not show up at the upcoming events. Persona creators ATLUS have now teased that we may be getting news from the studio – leading many to believe that we will finally see the Persona 3 Remake.

As reported by Persona Central, ATLUS recently updated their schedule for Anime Expo 2023. Set to take place from the 1st until the 4th of July, the developer has announced two additional panels for the event, with a description that reads as follows:

“Join ATLUS West and be the first to know about all the exciting happenings! By the time you’re reading this, the cat is out of the bag.. head over to the mobile app for more details on our news and special guests!”

The statement “by the time you’re reading this, the cat is out of the bag..” heavily suggests that whatever they will be discussing will be announced ahead of the event; at Summer Game Fest perhaps?

In recent weeks we have heard increasing talks about the much-rumoured Persona 3 Remake making its first official appearance at Xbox’s Showcase (set to go live on Sunday the 11th of June at 6PM BST). ATLUS’ most recent statement seems to indicate that this very well might be the case. We won’t have long to wait in order to find out.

It's been almost 7 years since the release of Persona 5 and yet there has been no official word on a sequel. That said, plenty of rumours and leaks have popped up over the years. As we inch closer to the inevitable release of a Persona 6, details surrounding the unannounced title have sprung up – with a new set of leaks reporting on multiple Persona projects.

This leak comes from industry insider Nate the Hate, who has in the past reported on a number of Persona details. According to the insider, Persona 6 is likely to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive and is planned to launch sometime in late 2024.

The much-rumoured Persona 3 Remake was also addressed, with Nate claiming that the game will release some time later this year. Additionally, the insider stated that the remake will be a multiplatform release, and is planned to be announced at the upcoming Xbox Showcase.

Finally, Nate spoke on spin-offs, revealing that some kind of Persona 5 spin-off is in the works and is planned to release in 2024 ahead of the official Persona 6 launch. No additional details were shared on what this spin-off will be, though based on prior releases it could be anything from a dungeon crawling RPG to a rhythm game. We will have to wait and see.

Right at the beginning of the year a new leak sprung up claiming that a remake of the much-loved ATLUS JRPG Persona 3 is in the works. In the months since we have heard new details on this project, but the latest update from one leaker claims that the highly-anticipated remake will be shown off at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase.

This report comes from ResetEra user ‘Im A Hero Too’ who has in the past shared many details regarding unreleased Persona projects. According to the insider, for “anyone interested in Persona, make sure you watch [the Xbox Showcase]. It’ll be Evoke-itive.”

The Xbox Games Showcase is set to go live on Sunday the 11th of June at 6PM BST, meaning we won’t have too long to wait in order to get our first official look at the game.

For the uninitiated, Persona 3 exists in multiple incarnations, that being the original Persona 3; Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable. Each of these three titles have their own advantages and disadvantages, with Portable for example not including 3D hubs, instead being replaced by static images. Despite this P3P has much more content, allowing you to play as a whole new protagonist if you wish.

With the full Persona 3 experience being split up amongst multiple games, it would make sense for ATLUS to remake the title, adding all of the exclusive content from each release into one single slick package. It looks like we will find out whether this is the case soon enough.

Persona 3 Portable rolled out for modern platforms earlier this year but ATLUS may have something even bigger planned. Earlier this year, it was claimed that a full remake of Persona 3 is in the works and now, we've got our first glimpse at it.

Gematsu has reported this week that the Persona 3 Remake is “planned at the very least” based on conversations with its own developer sources. One Twitter user has shared a clip of what appears to be early footage of the remake in action:

For the uninitiated, Persona 3 exists in multiple incarnations, that being the original Persona 3; Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable. Each of these three titles has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, Portable removes 3D hubs from the world and plays out more like a visual novel compared to the standard version. However, this version also has more content compared to the original release, including an additional protagonist.

A remake would allow ATLUS to go back and create a truly definitive version, incorporating the best bits of each version of Persona 3, combined with modern gameplay enhancements seen in newer Persona games.

Rumours claim that Persona 3 Remake is being developed alongside Persona 6, although we do not know which one will release first.

Though it feels like yesterday, the highly revered Persona 5 is over 6 years old, first launching in 2016 in Japan (before later coming to the West in early 2017). With it being so long since the last mainline game fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the all-but-confirmed Persona 6. Unfortunately, you may have to wait a bit longer as according to one industry insider there is an “Absolute zero chance [Persona] 6 releases this year.”

‘Im A Hero Too’ is a known industry insider, in particular when it comes to the Persona franchise, with them having leaked the existence of the currently-in-development Persona 3 Remake. When asked by one fan for an update on the current status of the much-anticipated (though yet to be officially announced) Persona 6, they responded:

“Absolute zero chance 6 releases this year. It was delayed internally just yesterday and there is a rough timeframe but can't share, sorry.”

Explaining a potential reason for the delay ‘Im A Hero Too’ continued, claiming it “could be to release remake first or the other game but I'm not privy to that info. If the teaser is at Sony's next show, I'll know beforehand and confirm.”

While not many were expecting Persona 6 to release this year, with it having been so long since the last game it is understandable that some fans are getting antsy. That said, you can't rush art and so while we could still be waiting years for the game to release, when it does it will most likely be worth the long wait.

ATLUS has had a strong relationship with Microsoft in recent years, with the Xbox console seeing some of the developer’s biggest titles (i.e. Persona) brought to it. Likewise, many ATLUS games have found their way onto Xbox Game Pass – the console manufacturer’s game subscription service. Following the inclusion of Persona 3, 4 and 5, a leaker has now claimed that the company’s latest JRPG is set to come to the service “soon.”

This report comes from eXtas1s – a well-known leaker who focuses on Xbox, Bethesda and other Microsoft subsidiaries. The leaker recently took to Twitter to offer the exciting announcement, saying in simple terms “SCOOP. Xbox Game Pass SOON !” alongside a GIF of the ATLUS JRPG Soul Hackers 2.

For the uninitiated, Soul Hackers 2 is a “supernatural RPG with stylish summoners and dark dangers lurking under the neon lights of a cyberpunk Japan” in which “It is up to Ringo, an agent of Aion, to save the world from apocalypse.”

The game first released in late August of 2022, meaning if it is indeed coming “soon” then the title could in fact be brought to Game Pass exactly 6 months after its initial launch – assuming it comes to the service this month.

Though we recently learned that titles coming to Game Pass negatively affect the game’s future sales it is exciting nonetheless to see ATLUS’ latest big project joining Game Pass (that is if this leak pans out of course).

Persona 5 hit big for ATLUS when the game first launched all the way back in 2016. After many years of waiting the JRPG has finally come to all platforms. With P5 being over 6 years old already however,  excitement surrounding a potential Persona 6 has been bubbling, with a new report claiming the game is planned to be revealed this Summer.

ResetEra user ‘Im A Hero Too’ who previously leaked the existence of the as-of-yet unannounced Persona 3 Remake offered an update on both it and the much-anticipated Persona 6, saying: “[Persona 3] Remake is pretty far along last I saw but so was 6. Last I heard, summer reveal.”

Interestingly, these games were supposedly already meant to be announced, with the leaker stating “Just a head's up, it was supposed to be shown already. Changed their minds at the drop of a hat” adding that “With 3 games in dev, I’m still shocked they keep cancelling/changing reveal timing with events/press.”

With Persona 5 Royal going multiplatform late last year, and Persona 3 Portable as well as P4 Golden having released earlier this month, it is safe to say that the Persona series will be having a rather big 2023.

Back in October 2022 we reported that the remasters of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden would not be native PlayStation 5 ports, but would instead run PS4 code through backwards compatibility. Interestingly, the Xbox was announced to be getting native Series X|S ports, and while we previously did not know whether the two versions would differ, it has now been confirmed that Persona 3 and 4 will run at 120fps on Xbox – but not PlayStation.

Ahead of the release of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, reviews have now gone live, with The Mako Reactor comparing the PlayStation and Xbox versions – revealing that the latter’s port is quite significantly superior.

Due to it being a native Xbox Series X|S port, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are both able to run at a silky smooth 120fps, with the PlayStation version limited to 60fps.

Furthermore, though no detailed pixel counting has occurred yet, it seems as though the PlayStation version runs at a lower resolution also when compared to the Series X.

Both these drawbacks would have undoubtedly been fixed had there been a native PS5 version and so it is confusing to see ATLUS choosing not to release one. Hopefully a PS5 SKU is introduced at some point in the future.

Later this month, Persona 3 Portable is set to be released for modern systems after spending so long trapped on its original release hardware. Despite the upcoming re-release it seems as though ATLUS has much bigger plans for the well-loved JRPG, as according to an insider, a full blown remake of Persona 3 is in the works.

As reported by ResetEra user lolilolailo (who previously leaked the Game Pass releases for P3P and P4G), a full-on remake of Persona 3 is in the works which will feature “Persona 5-like graphics and quality-of-life improvements.”

2022 was a big year for ATLUS, with the studio releasing multiple much-anticipated titles, including the long-awaited multiplatform release of Persona 5 Royal. With 2023 officially underway, the team have now teased their plans for the upcoming 12 months.

To start off 2023, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu collaborated with dozens of studios to release a whole host of new year greeting cards. Among the many studios was ATLUS, who (as translated by PersonaCentral) teased the team’s future titles, saying:

“Happy New Year! Thank you very much for your support and patronage for the remastered version of P4U2 in 2022, the Nintendo Switch version of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Soul Hackers 2, and the remastered version of Persona 5 Royal. Thanks to your support, the remastered edition of P5R achieved 1 million sales within one month of its release, and P5R as a whole has surpassed 3.3 million units worldwide. In 2023, we will start with the remastered releases of P3P and P4G, and we are also preparing several new unannounced titles. Please look forward to it!”

As mentioned, we already have multiple ATLUS titles set for release in 2023, that being Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. Of course, both these are remasters of much older games, and so it will be interesting to see what the team has planned for this year with regards to brand new titles. Persona 6 perhaps? We will have to wait and see.

For years, ever since it was first released back in 2016, fans of the Persona series have been asking for Persona 5 to come to systems other than the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Finally, half a decade later Persona 5 Royal was released for Xbox, PC and Switch. This move seems to have been the right one, as the re-release of Persona 5 Royal has already sold one million copies.

Making the announcement on Twitter, developer ATLUS revealed that “The latest release of Persona 5 Royal has already sold one million units! Thank you to fans worldwide for all of your support!”

As mentioned, Persona 5 originally released back in 2016 (2017 in the West) exclusively for PlayStation systems. Then in 2019 (2020 in the West), Persona 5 Royal was brought to market – though again, only for PlayStation.

Finally, after years of waiting, Persona 5 Royal came to PC, Xbox consoles and Switch (as well as PS5) in the 3rd week of October 2022. To see Persona 5 Royal sell so well in such a short amount of time is impressive (especially since it also came to Game Pass), and hopefully means that future titles will release across multiple platforms from the get-go – though we will have to wait and see.

The mainline Persona games have historically been exclusive to Sony systems, though this has been slowly but surely changing. Following the release of Persona 5 Royal on all platforms, Persona 4 Golden is next, planned for release in January 2023. Ahead of this however, it seems the game’s already-released PC version will be seeing a rather large update to bring it in line with the upcoming console versions.

As discovered by Twitter users ‘Sewer56’ and ‘RUDIGER’ Persona 4 Golden on PC is set to get a rather significant update. Just some of the changes noted so far in the pre-release files includes:

  • Game filesystem has been completely redone (similar to P5R)
  • The EXE is now 64-bit
  • Performance massively improved
  • New graphics settings
  • New quick save/suspend feature
  • The AOA stutter is fixed
  • Fixed title screen logo and “retum to Inaba”
  • Dojima's sprite can now blink
  • Various font changes

Persona 4 Golden originally released for PC back in 2020 and while the launch was met with few complaints, it is nice to see the team wanting to make sure that the game offers a consistent experience across devices.

As part of SEGA's recently released annual fiscal report, the publisher revealed the sales data for its franchises. The Persona series landed as SEGA’s 9th biggest with more than 15 million units sold. Interestingly, nearly half of these sales are related to Persona 5.

In the same report which revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog has amassed an audience of over 1.6 Billion, it was announced that the Persona franchise had officially sold 15.5 million units.

More interestingly however is the fact that Persona 5 and its spin-offs account for 7.22 million units – or almost 47% off all the franchise’s sales.

There is no denying that the Persona series hit it big with Persona 5, and now that the game is available on all modern systems, it is likely to soon account for a majority of the series’ total sales.

That being said, Persona 3 and 4 are coming to modern consoles in 2023, and so it will be interesting to not only see how many more copies are sold over time, but also whether Persona 5 will take the majority of sales.

It has been over five years since Persona 5 first launched on PS4. Up to now, the game, and its updated ‘Royal' version, have been exclusive to the PlayStation platform but today, that has finally changed. We now have a truly definitive version of the game right here on PC, and it is a near-flawless port.

I've spent several hours with Persona 5 on PC since the game hit Xbox Game Pass today. On the first launch, the game will default to 1080p resolution, so if text looks weird on first load, just head into the config section of the main menu and from there, you can adjust resolution, anti-aliasing, shadows and more. In the display section, you can change your resolution and frame rate cap.

The game also includes a resolution scale option, so if you want it to be a bit sharper, you can boost that all the way up to 200%. On a system featuring a Core i7-8700K and an RTX 3070 Ti, the game hits 120FPS at 1440p with 200% resolution scale, all with other settings cranked as high as they will go. Even with the extra resolution boost, the game barely uses 60% of my GPU, and CPU usage is also quite low, so it should run very well on a wide variety of systems. I only have one note to make – on Xbox Game Pass, I would get an error code message popping up occasionally, seemingly for no reason. Clicking off of this allows you to continue with the game as normal, so it is a nuisance, but nothing game-breaking. Hopefully, that gets patched out relatively quickly as Persona 5 is most definitely going to be one of the most-played Game Pass titles of the year.

You can see some screenshots of the game in the gallery above – all taken from the opening section to avoid any major spoilers. The game itself is not a next-gen-looking title. You won't be blown away by Persona 5's graphics, but every inch of this game is oozing with style and everything looks pretty sharp at higher resolutions. The animated cutscenes all appear properly too and don't give off a low-res or fuzzy look.

I'd also be doing a poor job if I didn't point out the music and voice acting in this game. Persona 5 has one of the best soundtracks in all of video games – to the point where you'll likely find yourself humming along during battles or walking sections. The English voice cast is also very good, and you'll hear more than a few recognisable voice actors from anime and other games too. Nobody's voice sounds out of place for their character, which has been an issue in some other JRPGs I've played over the years (I'm looking at you, Xenoblade Chronicles 2). Still, if you just prefer Japanese voice acting, the option is there.

In the past, we've seen issues with JRPGs like this moving over to PC, with many using odd control schemes that don't line up with what most PC gamers expect. There is a small amount of that here in Persona 5, where there are sections that require a spacebar press, rather than a mouse click. An early tutorial will also show you all the keys for camera movement using just a keyboard, but you can also control the camera with your mouse, so while it looks odd at first, you won't need to be hitting random keys to turn your camera.

For the most part, the game plays very well on a mouse and keyboard. You can mouse-click through conversations and generally, it doesn't veer too far from typical PC game control schemes. If you do find the movement to be a tad unnatural with a mouse and keyboard, then the option to use a gamepad is always there, but personally, I'm finding the experience to be perfectly fine and I've not run into any major roadblocks that would force me to recommend a gamepad over a mouse and keyboard combo.

So with all of that aside, what is Persona 5 actually like to play? Ultimately, Persona 5 is a lengthy RPG that leans heavily into its characters and their individual stories. You'll meet a ton of likeable and not-so-likeable characters along the way and by participating in side content, you can learn more about them and grow your ‘social link', which will unlock new abilities and other benefits for you over the course of the game.

Befriending Yusuke for instance will net you the ability to duplicate skill cards, which you can then use to customise the moves of various Persona. Building up your link with Tae will unlock better healing items and you'll be able to get them cheaper than elsewhere in the game. There is a full list of ‘confidants' that you can interact with between major story moments and it is worth investing your time into exploring these. The gameplay reward is key, but even if that wasn't there, each of these characters have great side stories to learn about and it really helps flesh out the game. Any RPG worth its salt makes you care about its characters and Persona is very good in that aspect.

For combat, you'll have a party of up to four characters, each with their own ‘Persona'. Different Personas have different abilities, so you can organise your party and their abilities for offence, defence and healing, as well as different element types so you can be as effective as possible on the battlefield. Eventually, you'll unlock the ability to capture Persona and have them join your party. You can then fuse different Personas together to make rarer or more powerful Personas to use in battle. It is an easy and simple system on the surface, but if you dive deeper into abilities, fusing Personas and mixing up your party, there is a surprising amount of depth here. You can also avoid most of this depth if you just want to blast through the story, many of Persona 5's side elements are technically optional, but you'll have a lot more fun with the game if you engage with everything it has to offer.

Grinding up your own character's personality traits can take quite some time. Even if you get every test answer right during classes, and study in the evenings, it will take a long time to max out your knowledge attribute. The same applies to your other character traits too, so it is best to go through Persona 5 with some patience, as it is a long game, and it will take a long time to unlock everything.

All of this comes without even mentioning Mementos, which is an area of the game you can explore to collect new Persona, gather loot chests and complete side missions to boost the notoriety of the Phantom Thieves. You can spend hours exploring this part of the game and make quite a bit of progress in terms of levelling up your party and Personas. You'll want to dedicate a bunch of time here too over the course of your playthrough, but I'd recommend being patient with it. You'll want to really start exploring Mementos after you clear the second main ‘palace' of the game.

Unfortunately, the downside to all of this content and the various systems is that if you do take a long break from the game, you may come back and feel a bit lost. This is the main reason I've had to restart the game several times since its original launch, but if you stick with it, it is one of the best RPGs around.

Persona 5 Royal is now available on Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. If you are on PC or Xbox, you will be able to get the game through Xbox Game Pass, granting you instant access without having to pay full price for the game. The PC version hits a quality level that sets it apart as the definitive version, simply due to how well it runs and the extra sharpness you get from bumping up the resolution well beyond what the console versions offer.

KitGuru Says: The PC version of Persona 5 Royal is the definitive version. It isn't a game-changing upgrade over the console versions, but it offers enough in the way of performance to set it apart. If you have Game Pass, it is worth an install, assuming you enjoy turn-based combat, the anime aesthetic and aren't expecting to clear the entire game in a weekend.
