It is not easy to produce consistently excellent products in a single product area. That is why we are proud to announce that KitGuru has given Seasonic the Continued Excellence award, for winning over 30 top awards in a single category.

An award like this doesn't come around often – in fact, only two have been give out to date, including this one – so KitGuru reviewers Dominic Moass and Briony Hannam met with Seasonic representatives Ray Milton and Nills Stallmach in London, to give the award in person.

A physical award was presented, as well as a framed list of all the Seasonic power supplies that have won KitGuru's top award. As mentioned, that is over thirty products to have walked away with our highest honour.

The Continued Excellence award is given in recognition of a manufacturer's on-going commitment to the highest levels of innovation & production quality. Embodied in the performance of their products during exhaustive testing by KitGuru labs.

In essence, we are proud to work with Seasonic and recognise their products have been consistent excellent. This award is given in recognition of that.

KitGuru says: Seasonic is a worthy winner of the Continued Excellence award for its power supplies.

It's not often a single company wins over 50 awards for its gaming products. In fact, it has never happened before – until now, that is, as we are proud to announce that KitGuru has awarded ASUS ROG the Continued Excellence award, for winning over 50 KitGuru awards for its gaming products!

An award like this doesn't come around often – in fact, only two have been give out to date, including this one – so KitGuru reviewers Dominic Moass and Briony Hannam hopped on the train to Hemel Hempstead, to visit ASUS HQ and present the Continued Excellence award in person to ASUS ROG representatives Alan Spohr, Trishna Cole, Anthony Pritchard and Sean Cleaver.

A physical award was presented, as well as a framed list of all the ASUS ROG products to win awards from KitGuru over the last two years. As you can see, it is not a short list!

The Continued Excellence award is given in recognition of a manufacturer's on-going commitment to the highest levels of innovation & production quality. Embodied in the performance of their products during exhaustive testing by KitGuru labs.

In essence, we are proud to work with ASUS ROG and we recognise the sheer amount of awards that its products have won from KitGuru over the last couple of years. This award is given in recognition of that.

KitGuru says: ASUS ROG is a worthy winner of the Continued Excellence award for its gaming products.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awarded its second eSports Audience Award in a ceremony last night, giving the people a vote in recognizing the popularity and importance of eSports and related game franchises.

The nominee list, chock-full of AAA-rated MOBA and TDM games like Overwatch, DOTA 2, LOL and CS:GO, counted in its ranks a mobile game, Clash Royale. For those who do not care for mobile gaming, Clash Royale is a card game/PvP brawler for mobile (Android and iOS), and a spin-off of the original Clash of Clans, by the same publisher and resorting to some of the original developers of Clash of Clans.

BAFTA, much to the surprise of onlookers, announced Clash Royale as the winner and left many purists livid, as can be seen by the award's twitter feed.

Despite its popularity among mobile gamers, smartphones are hardly a spectator sport when compared to mature competitive franchises that bring in the crowds by the thousands and rake in the money prizes like CS:GO, Overwatch, League of Legends and DoTA 2. But it may just be time to rethink this…

For a bit of perspective, Overwatch hit 25 million online players a couple of months ago, while the biggest League of Legends event in 2014 was streamed to over 27 million online viewers. ESL's Intel-sponsored “Intel Extreme Masters” four-day gaming event drew in 104,000 visitors. Most, if not all, offered big money prizes.

Clash Royale has – on Android alone – over 100 million installs. You can safely bet there are quite a few on iOS too, and its players are very active. Which would account for the presumable deluge of votes on social media (BAFTA's method of choice) for the Audience Award. Ironically, the award is also sponsored by AMD who even gives away a bunch of prizes, including a full gaming PC, to one lucky voter/winner. Not that anyone will be playing Clash Royale on one.

In the long term, considering AMD is a mobile-less semiconductor design company, this could actually have AMD's beancounters wondering if the sponsorship is worth keeping.

KitGuru Says: While we're hard-pressed to declare Clash Royale a “spectator sport”, it is clear that the install base and players for iOS and Android far outmatch desktop counterparts. After this result, we may be seeing sponsorships and competitive eSports matches on Clash Royale to pick up.

At least it looks like the public and open rights groups aren't the only ones that find GCHQ's snooping antics leave a bad taste in their mouth. The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has had its annual award ceremony where it gives props to some of the best and brightest internet based companies in the UK and this year it's given GCHQ the “internet villain,” award.

The ISPA awards have been held every year since 1999 and each time they vote for companies like “best consumer fixed broadband”, best for “customer choice,” best for “wireless” and of course, top Internet Villain. While GCHQ holds that trophy high this year, it is joined by the NSA, which also jointly received the notice for hindering the British internet the most this year.

According to ISPA voters, GCHQ helped create a surveillance state, one that they consider detrimental to the current state of British internet.

Despite this clear condemnation from so many parties however, David Cameron announced yesterday that new laws would be coming in to play to counteract a ruling by the EU, which made ISP data retention illegal. Moving forward, Cameron has made it possible again, citing paedohphiles and terrorists as a reason for continuing to snoop on British citizens. This, despite the fact that we know the NSA's similar and often more invasive strategies have yielded almost no results in over five years.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It's heart warming to see that ISPs hate this whole snooping business as much as anyone. It doesn't seem like any amount of displeasure can stop the politicians once they get the ball rolling though.

You might not have heard of Lauren Villagran, graduate of Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism with a background that includes Associated Press and CBS, but she's the lady that's helped pen one of the most explosive business stories of recent times: The decision by Hector Ruiz to stand up and fight against Intel's antitrust violation practices in 2005. KitGuru checks for nugget sized rocks and flexes the elastic.

When Hector was studying engineering in the mid-60s, Intel has not been formed by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce.

However, these guys were already on a collision course that would end in the 2005 suit filed by Hector while running AMD, which was ultimately found to be a strong enough of an accusation that Intel had to pay AMD $1.25 Billion in 2009.

If you're unsure how Hector has couched the story, co-written with Lauren Villagran, then the full title is a bit of a giveaway.

Slingshot:AMD’s Fight To Free An Industry From The Ruthless Grip Of Intel

Catchy.

It hails from the biblical story of David taking down Goliath with a single, accurate rock. In real life, the blow to +$50 billion turnover Intel was less fatal than in the good book, but it still shows that if you are honest and true, then you can get your day in court and the opposition (no matter how large) can be made to pay for wrong-doing, which is comforting in a way.

The book also covers other areas that we're all familiar with, including the ego-play that prevented nVidia from merging with AMD because AMD would not accept former employee Jen Hsun Huang as CEO.

It also touches on the story of how AMD became known in the trade as Arabic Micro Devices, following a bail out by Abu Dhabi.

Lauren Villagran, Hector Ruiz and St George slaying the dragon - will Slingshot attract Hollywood?

.

KitGuru says: In English history, we celebrate 23rd April as St George's Day. He's the chap who slayed the dragon. Hector has chosen that day for the release of his book, so maybe Dragon-slaying was foremost on his mind. But it's also Shakespeare's birth and death day – so maybe he's just celebrating Lauren's writing style.

The post KitGuru Annual Awards 2012 first appeared on KitGuru.]]>

2012 was a busy year for the Kitguru team. We reviewed hundreds of products in the last twelve months, from mainsteam performance memory cards to bank breaking video cards. Today we look back on the last 12 months and pick out the very best hardware to hit our labs.

Having posted close to 7,000 articles since we launched, it might come as a surprise that only a handful of products have ever achieved top marks in the KitGuru Labs. In fact, it took five months of testing to get the first product with a perfect '10' and that was Arctic's MX-4 Thermal Compound. Since then, only a couple of products have managed to score the perfect 10.

KitGuru Labs sees a ton of kit each year, but what's best - overall?

For the KitGuru annual awards, getting a great score on a product when it was first reviewed will only go part of the way to securing top spot for the whole year. We will also take into account other products which might have superseded it – maybe with a slightly lower score, but a significantly lower price.

A great example of this was the launch of nVidia's GTX660. Each new card into the KitGuru Lab had an even more impressive cooler/overclock than the previous one – so the lead was being swapped every other day.

In some cases, we have two clear winners: For example, there's no intelligent way to match a high performance Intel chipset board with one designed for an entry level AMD APU, so we've created intelligent sub-categories or sections.

Another thing to note is that, in some cases, the winning product is in KitGuru's Labs – fully tested – but hasn't been published yet. It's rare, but does happen, so we'll let you know when you're getting an ‘insight into the future'.

One thing is for sure, whatever your preferences: If you build a system based on these components – you can't go wrong. For that reason, we've created a brand new award logo for these special products – something worth looking out for!

Enough pre-amble, let's get on with the KitGuru Annual Awards 2012.
