Turtle Rock Studios has struggled in recent years to recapture the simple yet addicting formula they created with Left 4 Dead back in 2008. Its spiritual successor Back 4 Blood showed a lot of promise however it unfortunately was unable to keep the attention of players for long. That said, it seems as though Turtle Rock might be giving the IP another go as a job listing has hinted at a sequel to Back 4 Blood being in the works.

As reported by VeryAliGaming, a new job listing posted by Turtle Rock Studios for a ‘Senior Combat Designer’ lists a number of roles and responsibilities – all of which seem to hint at the fact that the team’s next game is either a sequel to Back 4 Blood or something very similar.

Part of the description for the role reads as follows: “Ideally, you are someone experienced with combat/weapons, class design, skills, and boss encounters”. Additionally, the applicant will need to “work with the maps team to ensure mission layouts and gameplay synergizes with the player combat loop” as well as having a “Love of games: specifically FPS, Co-op, and Multiplayer games.”

All these stipulations could and very well might be referring to a sequel to Back 4 Blood. Regardless of what this game ends up being, it will seemingly run on Unreal Engine 5, with the job listing stating that applicants should have “experience with UE4/5 and Blueprint.”

Turtle Rock Studios have not had the easiest time following their work on Left 4 Dead 2. Hopefully this new game – whatever it may be – ends up putting the studio back on the map. We will have to wait and see.

Turtle Rock Studios revived the Left 4 Dead series through a spiritual successor known as Back 4 Blood. Released back in October 2021, post-launch support for the title has officially ended, with the team now focusing on their next project.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Turtle Rock Studios said “Greetings, Cleaners! What an amazing year 2022 was for us. First off, we wanted to thank all of you for making Back 4 Blood what it is today. With three expansions – Tunnels of Terror, Children of the Worm, and River of Blood – we’ve traveled on a fantastic adventure together beyond the walls of Fort Hope. This phase of our war against the Ridden now comes to a close.”

Explaining the reasoning behind Back 4 Blood’s end-of-life, the team continued, “Turtle Rock Studios is actually pretty small for a studio making AAA games. We don’t have quite enough folks to continue working on Back 4 Blood content while we spin up another game – yes, another game! Given this, it’s time for us to put our heads down, get back in the lab, and get to work on the next big thing.”

Finally, Turtle Rock Studios concluded by saying “While we may be a bit quieter in the short-term, we promise that we’ll be Back, bigger, bolder and better than ever! With much love and gratitude, Turtle Rock Studios.”

Back 4 Blood may not have set the world on fire, but the game did find an audience, and while post-launch support may have ended sooner than expected, the game was well supported and so it seems to have simply been the right time for the team to move on.

Turtle Rock has always had post-launch expansions and DLCs planned for Back 4 Blood, although it has taken a while longer than expected. Last month, the studio announced that the first expansion, Tunnels of Terror, would be launching in April. This week, the big update officially began rolling out, adding in a new game mode, new characters, new enemies and more.

At launch, Back 4 Blood packed one single, but lengthy campaign, as well as a multiplayer horde mode. In the months since release, the game has received bug fixes, quality of life updates and balance changes. Now, with the first major DLC out the door, players have a new game mode, Ridden Hives, to play, as well as two new characters, enabling new playstyles and abilities for PvE runs.

The Tunnels of Terror expansion also brings new variations of three Special Ridden, eight new skins, new perk cards and legendary weapons. There are also two more expansions planned this year, so there shouldn't be nearly as long a gap between now and the next expansion release.

Aside from the new content, this week's Back 4 Blood update also makes further improvements, balance updates and fixes to the main campaign, perk cards and UI. The full patch notes can be viewed HERE.

We have seen dozens of studios, publishers, console manufacturers and more all take a stand against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. One of the latest to do so is HumbleBundle, which is offering a new bundle with 100% of proceeds going to charity.

HumbleBundle used to be known for their generous business model, which allowed people to donate large portions of their payments for bundles to charities. Over the years, Humble has reduced the amount going to charity unfortunately.

That being said, the company is now offering a new Stand with Ukraine Bundle in which “100% of the proceeds will go to Razom for Ukraine, International Rescue Committee, International Medical Corps, and Direct Relief.”

So far, the bundle has raised an impressive £8.25 million. While no doubt being thanks to the desire by many to help Ukraine however they can, the fact that the bundle includes 123 items certainly helps. Paying at least £30.58 will net you games including:

Back 4 Blood; Metro Exodus; Spyro Reignited Trilogy; Max Payne 3; Sunset Overdrive; Quantum Break; Fable; This War of Mine; Wandersong, Amnesia; Wargroove and Satisfactory – to name but a few.

The HumbleBundle “Stand with Ukraine” Bundle, as well as all of the details pertaining to the charities, can be found HERE.

At launch, Back 4 Blood packed one single, but lengthy campaign, as well as a multiplayer horde mode. In the months since release, the game has received bug fixes, quality of life updates and balance changes, but the first major DLC has yet to land. That will be changing on the 12th of April, when the Tunnels of Terror expansion drops.

This expansion will bring new variations of three Special Ridden, two new playable characters, eight new skins and a new PvE mode called Ridden Hives.

While it has taken six months to get to the first major expansion, Turtle Rock will be looking to have a quicker turnaround on the next two planned expansions for the Back 4 Blood annual pass. The next two expansions have not yet been named, but the studio has previously stated that both are planned for 2022.

Tencent has quietly expanded a ton in recent years, adding new studios to its roster and making strategic investments in a number of independent studios. The company's latest acquisition is a pretty major one – with Tencent picking up Turtle Rock Studios.

Turtle Rock Studios made a name for itself with Left 4 Dead back in the day, before selling the IP to Valve. In recent years, the company has turned its attention to other projects, like Back 4 Blood, which just launched this October.

Turtle-Rock-Studios-Logo.jpg

Now, Turtle Rock will no longer be independent and will become part of Tencent. Under new ownership, the studio will continue to be led by its co-founders, Phil Robb and Chris Ashton. All current studio operations will continue as planned and the acquisition will apparently have no impact on continued development for Back 4 Blood.

Tencent also owns studios like Riot Games, Funcom and Sharkmob, while also holding stakes in companies like Epic Games, Dontnod Entertainment, Supercell, Grinding Gear Games, Remedy Entertainment and more. Tencent also has minority stakes in several major video game publishers, including Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and Paradox Interactive.

KitGuru Says: While I wasn't expecting to see Turtle Rock bought out before the end of this year, I also can't say I'm surprised that the studio looked to join forces with a larger entity. Evolve was a massive failure and while Back 4 Blood had a great launch, the number of active players has been slowing down. Now, Turtle Rock will have plenty of financial backing for its future projects.

Back 4 Blood has been out for over a month now and by most accounts, the game has been a success so far. However, one area that Turtle Rock has struggled in is balancing difficulty, which will continue to be a focus for the team as work on updates continues.

In a community update on Reddit, Turtle Rock confirmed that it “spoke too soon” when it claimed that an earlier patch had solved the unusually high difficulty level. Currently, Back 4 Blood has an “unintended increased difficulty” level, and the team is “actively working on a solution”.

Previously, these difficulty spikes were attributed to a bug, which would cause Special Infected to duplicate and attack players in high numbers. It seems that trauma damage to the player is also being dealt too quickly. Speaking on difficulty and balance, Turtle Rock explained:

“Difficulty needs to be our ‘baby bear' in Back 4 Blood’s Goldilocks story. It needs to be “just right.” We want it tense. We want it challenging. We want you barely squeaking into the saferoom with a horde hot on your heels and you feeling that rush. We do not want it unmanageable. We do not want it to be unfair. That is our mission.”

Turtle Rock will continue tinkering with Back 4 Blood balance, adjusting the effectiveness of player weapons and cards, as well as the damage and spawn rates of infected. The studio has also unveiled its content roadmap recently, which will include free content updates, followed by paid campaign expansions in 2022.

Back 4 Blood has been out for around a month now, which means it is time to start talking about post-release content. Today, Turtle Rock shared its roadmap for upcoming content, including free updates, with the first paid expansions coming in 2022.

At launch, Back 4 Blood has one lengthy campaign for players to work through, as well as a multiplayer horde mode. This month, players can look forward to further quality of life improvements and bug fixes, followed by a more substantial content update in December. Next month's update will introduce new supply lines, a new ridden practice area, a seasonal event, in addition to a proper offline, solo mode for the campaign.

In 2022, Turtle Rock will turn its attention to the game's season pass content, starting with the first expansion, “Tunnels of Terror”, in early 2022. Two more unnamed expansions are also due for release next year, bringing new cleaners, ridden, weapons, cards, cosmetics and a new game mode.

That is all the information we have for now, so we'll have to stay tuned for more details in the months to come.

Back 4 Blood is the newest game from Turtle Rock Studios, and the spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series of games. It seems demand for a new Left 4 Dead has grown sufficiently strong ever since the release of 2 back in 2009, as Back 4 Blood has officially surpassed 6 million players.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Back 4 Blood account said “Thanks for all your hard work, Cleaners! With this many Cleaners on our side, we'll stop the Ridden in no time.”

Alongside this, the team revealed that Back 4 Blood has managed to reach over 6 million players. While a massive achievement – especially considering the game has only been out for two weeks – the game is available on Xbox Game Pass; undoubtedly skewing these figures somewhat.

Officially, Xbox Game Pass has over 18 million monthly subscribers – though this figure could actually be as high at 30 million. It would certainly be interesting to see just how many of the 6 million players did so through Game Pass.

As mentioned, Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead franchise, in many ways only being different by name. Even so, while general reception was positive, the game has been receiving a greater deal of criticism than Left 4 Dead ever had to endure. Still with post-launch content on its way, and 6 million players already having played the game, Back 4 Blood is looking to be an early success.

Like clockwork, Microsoft has announced the upcoming lineup of games set to be coming to its Game Pass subscription service. For the first half of October, subscribers can look forward to day-one releases, old DLC and more.

Making the announcement, Microsoft revealed the upcoming line-up of games set to make their way onto Game Pass over the next two weeks, namely:

  • Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (Cloud, Console, and PC) – Today
  • The Procession to Calvary (Cloud, Console, and PC) – October 7
  • Visage (Cloud, Console, and PC) – October 7
  • Back 4 Blood (Cloud, Console, and PC) – October 12
  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (PC) – October 12
  • Ring of Pain (Cloud, Console, and PC) – October 14
  • The Riftbreaker (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S) – October 14
  • The Good Life (Cloud, Console, and PC) – October 15

Of this list, by far the biggest addition is the upcoming release of Back 4 Blood. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios – who previously worked on Left 4 Dead – Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to the highly successful and much loved first person co-op zombie game. Back 4 Blood is the closest we will ever get to a Left 4 Dead 3, and so it is exciting to see it come to Game Pass as a day-one release – especially as it focuses heavily on co-op.

Another notable addition includes The good Life, which is the latest game from Swery65 (known for Deadly Premonition, The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories and more). This too, is a day-one launch on Game Pass.

Of course, we would be remiss to not talk about Destiny 2. Though free-to-play, the expansions cost a decent chunk of money, and so even though Destiny 2 Beyond Light is rather old now (having launched back in November 2020), it is still the latest release, with the next expansion – The Witch Queen – not coming out until February 2022.

While not an earth shattering line-up, the first half of October is looking to have a number of exciting and interesting day-one releases – and if we’re being honest, Back 4 Blood alone makes this line-up exciting.

This week on KitGuru Games we’re looking ahead to the future. Due to various delays, the summer months have been a tad slow for major game releases but there is a lot to be excited for in the final months of 2021, so I’ll be shining a spotlight on some of my most anticipated titles for the rest of the year.

1 – Halo Infinite:

After a year-long delay, Halo Infinite is finally set to arrive on PC and Xbox consoles this holiday season. I was one of the few that enjoyed last year’s campaign gameplay reveal and despite all the memes and the lack of new campaign gameplay shown in 2021, I am still very much looking forward to embarking on another adventure as Master Chief.

Unfortunately, there are major story spoilers already floating around the web, as some campaign files were mistakenly left in the recent Halo Infinite Multiplayer Technical Preview, including a complete play-by-play of major events throughout the game. This is the first new Halo campaign in six years, so if you’re a long-time fan like I am, then tread lightly while browsing forums, subreddits or Discord channels for early Halo Infinite news.

On the multiplayer side, well what can I say that I haven't already? Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is already shaping up to be fantastic.

2 – Dying Light 2: Stay Human:

Dying Light 2 is the riskiest pick on this list. The game has gone through documented development troubles, shifted key staff members around and has been delayed a number of times already. The game stood out as very ambitious when it was first shown at E3 2018, promising new RPG mechanics, a complex network of player choices and consequences, faction systems, revamped parkour and more.

Techland spent most of 2020 being silent about the status of the game, but that changed this year, with the studio releasing a couple of developer diaries with small snippets of new gameplay and the promise of a late 2021 release. If the team can pull this off, then Dying Light 2 could be even more replayable than the first game, with each playthrough feeling different through the choices you make along the way and the alliances you forge. Of course, as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077 last year, it is easy to over promise and under deliver when it comes to choices, multiple endings, and overall player agency, so I just hope that Dying Light 2’s RPG-esque aspects don’t turn out to be shallow.

If there is any game on this list that I expect to be delayed, it is this one. For now though, it is scheduled to arrive in December.

3 – Tales of Arise:

I first encountered the ‘Tales of’ JRPG series a decade ago with Tales of Xillia on the PlayStation 3. Over the last six years, Bandai Namco has been attempting to grow the franchise in the west, bringing new entries like Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Berseria and Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition to more platforms, including PC, Xbox, Switch and PlayStation, but the series has yet to have its ‘Monster Hunter World’ moment, where it truly breaks through and becomes mainstream outside of Japan.

With Tales of Arise, the development team is looking to finally have that breakthrough moment. This was confirmed by Arise producer, Yusuke Tomizawa, who has stated that the developers hope to evolve the Tales franchise with this entry. The developers have made some major changes to try and make that happen.

Combat has been retooled to be less static, requiring players to evade and counter attacks. You’ll be able to get your party more involved too with ‘Boost Strikes’, allowing you to pull off powerful combo moves with multiple characters. Graphically, the series is also getting a major improvement, as the developers have moved away from their own in-house engine to Unreal Engine 4. Characters, movement, environments – everything is finally looking good.

There is a demo for Tales of Arise already available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but for some reason, Bandai Namco chose not to release the demo on PC. The full game launches on the 10th of September.

4 – Back 4 Blood:

Valve hasn't updated Left 4 Dead in a very long time and despite leaks and rumours surrounding a third game, it seems that Valve just isn't interested in making a modern co-op horde shooter. Fortunately, original Left 4 Dead studio, Turtle Rock, is happy to revisit those past ideas and expand upon them.

Earlier this month, the Back 4 Blood beta went live, inviting us all to play through the game's first campaign on all difficulty levels. The shooting feels great with a mouse and keyboard, as well as a controller. My only gripe is that the aim assist with a gamepad is way too sticky, making it easy to continuously lock on to targets and rarely miss a bullet – something that could be problematic in the PvP mode.

I don't care much for the card system that has been put in place, but it certainly makes playing on harder difficulties less of a chore, and some of the perks are too good to pass up, such as turning your bash/punch into a knife melee attack, making it easier when a zombie catches you off-guard and gets a little too close. Weapon customisation through attachments is also a nice bonus to have.

Given Turtle Rock's history with Evolve, I do have concerns over monetisation and despite enjoying the beta, I'm not sure I would pay full price for the game either. However, since the game will be available through Xbox Game Pass on PC and console, I will certainly be playing more of this in October.

5 – Horizon Forbidden West:

Horizon Zero Dawn is the game that pushed me into buying a PS4 back in 2017 and now four years later, we’re getting a sequel for both PS4 and PS5. The original game had one of the most interesting open-worlds in recent memory and the twists of the main story had me on the edge of my seat throughout Aloy’s journey. It was a top 5 game for me during the last console generation.

Now, with Horizon Forbidden West, we’ll have a chance to see a battle-tested, experienced Aloy travelling to new lands to learn more about  ‘The Old Ones’ and how the world came to be taken over by futuristic robot beasts. We’ve only seen limited gameplay segments so far, but the improvements shown to exploration and combat already have me sold.

Unfortunately, there is also talk of this game being delayed to early 2022. However, Guerrilla Games and Sony are sticking to their late 2021 release window for the time being.

Honourable Mentions:

Before we wrap up, I have a few rapid-fire honourable mentions for this list:

  • Battlefield 2042 – It looks like it is going to be a great time, but I do wish there was a Bad Company style campaign to go along with the multiplayer.
  • Deathloop – I'm still not entirely sure what this game is all about, but I've been a big fan of Arkane's other games to date and I'll definitely be checking this out next month.
  • Age of Empires 4 – It is difficult to make a strategy game look exciting in trailers. I’m very much looking forward to this, but I’m going to need some real hands-on time with it before I slot it above other games on this list.
  • Far Cry 6 – Assuming Horizon Forbidden West does come out this year, Far Cry 6 will almost definitely be thrown into a backlog. I enjoy Ubisoft games and I really like the story premise for Far Cry 6, but Far Cry titles also tend to be overly long and the side content/open-world activities are often boring.
  • Twelve Minutes – If you’re into time loops, mystery and puzzle solving, then Annapurna Interactive’s latest release is certainly worth a look. This is an indie title I’ve been keeping my eye on for a very long time. It finally released yesterday, so I’ll be jumping into it over the weekend.
  • New World – We've already discussed New World in a previous KitGuru Games. I enjoyed the hours I spent with the game in beta, but the next few months are pretty packed with new releases, several of which fall into genres that I prefer over MMOs.

There has been a lot of excitement building up around Back 4 Blood over the last year. On Steam alone, the game's closed beta for pre-order customers and select invitees has been a roaring success, amassing over 100,000 active players.

Over the weekend, Back 4 Blood was able to garner 100,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, as pointed out by SteamDB. This is just the closed beta, so this gives us some indication of the number of pre-order customers. Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead from Turtle Rock Studios, the original company behind the Left 4 Dead IP before Valve acquired it.

Later this week, Back 4 Blood will enter open beta, giving anyone a free pass to download the game and try it out for a limited time before release. The beta also includes Nvidia's DLSS tech, so if you are using an RTX graphics card, you should be able to squeeze out some extra performance. On my personal rig with a Core i7-8700K and a GTX 1080 Ti, I had no issues maintaining a high frame rate at 1440p using the high graphics preset, so even without DLSS, the game should run well.

Back 4 Blood is coming out for PC, Xbox and PlayStation on the 12th of October.

KitGuru Says: I enjoyed the time I've spent in the Back 4 Blood beta so far. Have many of you tried this one out? What do you think of the game?

Saber Interactive did well for itself with World War Z a couple of years back and now, the studio is working on another licensed zombie shooter, Evil Dead: The Game. While the game was initially planned for a 2021 release, it has now been pushed back to 2022.

This week, Saber Interactive announced that it is pushing back Evil Dead: The Game in an effort to give the game more polish before launch. Moving forward, the game will be targeting a February 2022 release window.

Here's the full statement: “Hey groovy gamers, we're targeting a new release date to give the team some extra time for polish and to ensure this is the ultimate Evil Dead experience you’re all waiting for! This additional time is also allowing us to implement a single-player option that will let you enjoy the game when you are without your co-op compadres.”

Another side effect to this delay is that there will now be more distance between this game and Back 4 Blood, another huge zombie co-op shooter from Turtle Rock Studios, the original studio behind Left 4 Dead. Back 4 Blood is releasing in October and is currently undergoing public beta testing.

This week, Nvidia has announced that Turtle Rock Studios' upcoming co-op zombie shooter, Back 4 Blood, will support DLSS at launch, enabling AI-assisted performance gains for RTX graphics card users.

We don't know what sort of performance improvement we can expect just yet, but with Back 4 Blood set to release in October, we won't have to wait long to find out. Typically, DLSS brings double digit performance gains when implemented.

Back 4 Blood isn't the only upcoming game introducing Nvidia's performance-boosting technology. DLSS is also coming to Escape from Naraka this month, joining the likes of Rust, Red Dead Redemption 2 and F1 2021, all of which also received DLSS updates this month.

DLSS is going to be coming to even more games in the future too, as Nvidia has released plugins for Unreal Engine and Unity, giving developers easier access to the technology while building games.

While there is a lot of excitement around Turtle Rock's Back 4 Blood, there is still some concern around microtransactions and fracturing the multiplayer community through DLC. Turtle Rock has addressed this issue, confirming systems in place to avoid splitting the community.

To avoid fracturing the player base, Back 4 Blood's PvE game mode will allow all members of a party to access paid DLC content, just as long as the party leader bought it. This includes maps, campaign DLC and any other gameplay-oriented DLCs.

In PvP, there is a Rainbow Six Siege style system in place, in which you can purchase new characters straight away, or if you play often enough, you will be able to unlock them for free. Turtle Rock also addressed pay-to-win concerns in PvP due to the presence of purchasable content drops. Fortunately, at the start of each match, all PvP players will have access to the same content, regardless of whether anyone purchased a content drop or not.

Back 4 Blood is currently expected to release on the 12th of October 2021 on Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well as PC. For PC and Xbox owners, the game will be available through Xbox Game Pass on day-one.

KitGuru Says: I'll be waiting until the multiplayer beta in August before making any judgements, but so far, I am intrigued to get my hands on this game. What do you all think of Back 4 Blood so far? Is it something you're planning to pick up?

Turtle Rock Studios' upcoming game, Back 4 Blood, finally returned to the spotlight last night during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. During the event, the game's open beta was announced, which is now officially taking place in August.

Turtle Rock Studios has been working on Back 4 Blood for a few years now after moving on from Evolve. Players that want to try the game out early can do so starting in August, as there will be a free open beta, although pre-order buyers will get early access.

The Back 4 Blood open beta takes place from the 12th to the 16th of August. If you pre-order the game though, then you'll get early access starting on the 5th of August. There are also a limited number of early access codes available if you register for the beta, but codes will be limited.

The beta will be available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5. The game officially releases on all those platforms on the 12th of October.

KitGuru Says: While I am concerned about the microtransaction side of things, I am still looking forward to playing Back 4 Blood. Will many of you be downloading it during the open beta in August?

Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, the game was poised to release on the 22nd of June 2021. The team have now officially announced however that Back 4 Blood will be seeing a rather significant delay, pushing the game back by almost 4 months.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Turtle Rock Studios said “Turtle Rock Studios is working hard to make Back 4 Blood the best game it can possibly be at launch and the team needs more time to do this. Therefore, we will release Back 4 Blood on October 12, 2021. We thank our community for its continued support and are excited to share that there will be an open beta this summer.”

Back 4 Blood was first announced in March 2019, with the game later seeing an official first look at the 2020 Game Awards. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, who are known best for creating the Left 4 Dead series, Back 4 Blood acts as a spiritual successor with a similar concept and equally as hectic gameplay.

Though no reason was given for the delay, many games have been delayed throughout 2020 and 2021 due to the ongoing issues surrounding COVID-19 and the global pandemic. It is likely that Turtle Rock Studios found themselves affected by this too.

Though the delay is unfortunate, it does mean that Back 4 Blood will now release much closer to Halloween, making the game’s themes much more appropriate to the season. Hopefully the game isn't delayed any further.

Turtle Rock has been quietly working away on its next game, Back 4 Blood, for some time now. After the shutdown of Evolve, the team decided to return to its roots, with Back 4 Blood billed as a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. Now, we have a brief look at the game via new concept art.

Back 4 Blood was first announced in March 2019, at which point, Turtle Rock was still hiring for key positions. As you might expect, this is a cooperative shooter pitting a squad of humans against hordes of zombies.

In the image above, you can see the first publicly released piece of concept art for the game. Clearly, we are staring at a fort with defences set up around the perimeter to keep the zombies at bay.

This gives us very little information about gameplay, but we will hopefully hear more soon. Back 4 Blood is set to be published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment, although they might be acquired in the future, with Microsoft, Activision and other publishers rumoured to be amongst those interested.

KitGuru Says: Titles like Vermintide and World War Z have been scratching the Left 4 Dead itch in the years since Left 4 Dead 2. Perhaps Turtle Rock can bring something special to the table here by shaking up the formula a bit. Either way, we'll be waiting a while longer to learn more.

Turtle Rock Studios has gone back to basics in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, announcing its brand new title Back 4 Blood. In both name and description, the co-op zombie shooter sounds a lot like a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead.

It’s no surprise that Turtle Rock would want to revisit the successful brand that established the studio, especially given that 2K’s Evolve was debatably a disaster. The developer stated in a FAQ that “going back to our roots and at the same time innovating on them” would help the studio compete in what is now an oversaturated genre.

“It’s hard to overstate what an awesome opportunity this is. We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains,” announced co-founder and design director Chris Ashton. “We also have some of the best teammates in the business at WBIE who understand our development process and are equally committed to our player-first mentality. We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away.”

Although this sounds a lot like Left 4 Dead 3, the studio explained that the “brand new, original IP” is a means of distancing itself from Valve’s now-dormant title. There will be a campaign and player versus player, but no, it won’t fall into the growing trend of battle royale games.

Despite Back 4 Blood being a long way from completion, Turtle Rock is in need of bolstering its development team and wants to hear from fans of its previous games while crafting this one. “We’re growing the team considerably because we’re stepping up to the biggest challenge in this studio’s history. We know this title has to stand out and we fully intend to make that happen,” said co-founder and creative director Phil Robb.

“We are thrilled to partner with the proven Turtle Rock Studios team on Back 4 Blood to advance the co-op zombie genre forward with innovative multiplayer gameplay,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The talented team at Turtle Rock has been developing amazing games together for a long time, and this is a great opportunity to work with them to create a new gaming universe built specifically with the large co-op zombie shooter community in mind.”

There is no release window just yet, but Turtle Rock has already announced that it is focusing on a triple-A price point across PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. “More possibilities aren’t out of the question though.”

KitGuru Says: Personally, I really liked Evolve although the fragmented versions and ridiculous DLC killed it quickly. It would be interesting to see how a modern Left 4 Dead-like game will hold up. What would you like to see in Back 4 Blood?
