With the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard, Activision is also introducing a new anti-cheat system, as well as harsher punishments for those caught cheating. As details in the updated security enforcement policy for Vanguard, those caught cheating will lead to permanent bans in all Call of Duty titles.

The team behind the Ricochet anti-cheat system updated the security enforcement policy this week, noting that “extreme cases of cheating” will lead to permanent suspensions that apply across the entire Call of Duty series, including “past, present or future titles” in the franchise.

Such a measure will be taken in “extreme cases” of cheating, or for “repeated violations of the security policy, such as in-game cheating”. You will also now be found in violation of the security policy if you “attempt to hide, disguise, or obfuscate” your hardware ID, which is often used to ban specific PCs from accessing the game, and avoid repeated account creations.

Richochet Anti-Cheat is debuting with Call of Duty: Vanguard's Warzone refresh, which is due to roll out before the end of this year. The system is only present in the PC version of the game, which should help clear up the number of cheaters in the crossplay matchmaking pool for console users.

KitGuru Says: Riot has had success with its own kernel-level anti-cheat system in Valorant, so hopefully Call of Duty's new Ricochet anti-cheat will follow a similar path.

Cheating is always something that plagues online multiplayer games but the situation gets seedier when there is real-world money to be won through tournaments. This week, Epic addressed the first week of Fortnite World Cup Qualifier matches, with hundreds of players having to forfeit their earnings due to cheating.

Cheating in a tournament setting can take many forms. Beyond ESP or aimbot hacks, you also get player ghosting, teaming, account sharing and even region lock avoidance. In total, 1163 Fortnite accounts were banned for two weeks for side-stepping region locks. These players did this to have multiple attempts at qualifying for the World Cup. Due to this, 196 players won't be receiving their prize money.

An additional 48 accounts were banned for seven days due to account sharing. A process in which you hand your account over to a more skilled player to have a better chance of winning. An additional eight accounts were banned for ‘teaming', a process in which two or more players group up in a solo lobby for a better chance of winning.

One person was banned for 72 hours for disconnecting from the live match to avoid giving points to another player. Finally, just one account was banned permanently for using cheat software.

KitGuru Says: The Fortnite World Cup has a $100 million prize pool associated with it, spreading across the weekly qualifier matches and leading up to the big finale. With so much money on the line, Epic Games is going to need to continue being diligent with cheat detection in all forms in order to keep the competition fair.

Riot is continuing to enforce its professional code of conduct with its pro player base, with several in the Oceanic region being hit with the ban hammer, three of which came from the same team – which you would imagine is going to cause more than a few problems with Season 4 just getting started.

The team facing up to losing over half of its roster, is Little Wraith, which only recently qualified to play the game professionally at the Intel Extreme Masters Regional Invitational. However when Riot investigated the team, it found players hadn't been keeping to the company's “Summoner's Code,” a somewhat loose list of moral guiedlines that pro-players are expected to adhere to more than than their unsponsored brethren.

hammer
I always imagine the ban hammer looking something like this

“I can not go into much detail due to privacy reasons,” Mirko Gozzo, Riot's Oceania GM, said when asked by PlayerAttack about the bans, . “But basically we regularly perform checks on our player behaviour and on this last check, a number of players – not only pro players – were found acting against our Summoner’s Code, and therefore were temporarily banned.

However Little Wraith wasn't the only team affected. Both Team Immunity and NV both received bans to some of their players, with one from the latter receiving a six month ban for his behaviour, meaning he can't compete in tournaments online or offline for some time.

KitGuru Says: It would be interesting to know what was done to earn these bans, since Riot has previously talked about “Toxic” behaviour in its banned players. Then again, perhaps those involved are under 18 and therefore can't be named? Hard to tell from the way it's worded.

Riot Games, the makers of hit Esport MOBA League of Legends, has been pushing to improve the atmosphere of the game, especially in the competitive sector. This has involved the banning of players and that practice has continued with three more pros getting dropped from the upcoming series.

However more than that, as both Khaled ‘StunnedandSlayed’ Abusagr and Nicolaj ‘Veigodx’ Jensen have actually received lifetime bans – the toughes punishment ever doled out by Riot. This might seem harsh, but as with the banned players that went before them, these two were some of the most reported in the game's history. In fact Abusagr has been recorded making physical threats, while Jensen publicly admitted to DDOSing high level ELO players.

Solo Mebdi
I had a joke about going solo after the ban, but it wasn't very good.

The third player was Simon ‘Rayt3ch’ Näslund who hasn't received quite as strict a punishment, instead only being banned from competing in the upcoming Season 3 championship. These LoL players have impacted their team beyond their own bans though, as because they all come from Team Solo Mebdi, the entire team has been disqualified from the upcoming tournament.

“Of course, nobody wants to take actions like these so close to a tournament event, but it takes time to carefully investigate, review and uncover all of the relevant historical facts of players (especially when they’ve operated under multiple banned accounts), and we never make decisions like these lightly,” explained Riot Senior eSports Manager Whalen Rozelle (via PCGamesN).

“As always, one of our top goals is to ensure that players seeking to compete in the LCS represent the principles of good sportsmanship and clean play.”

The cleaning house all started with a single ban but that one quickly became three as these Riot described, “toxic” players were given one year suspensions from competition and all their accounts permabanned.

KitGuru Says: Keep it up Riot. The nastiness of some players is why I have to take breaks from LoL every few months as it's hard to justify playing a game for “fun,” when you can spend whole games getting s*%t talked by your own team.

Sports around the world, whether they be based in the real world or online, have trash talking as part of their culture. It's an accepted practice and is annoying when you're on the receiving end, but we don't expect people to be 100 per cent gentlemanly 100 per cent of the time. What it is becoming clear though, is that we expect people not to be abusive, repeatedly and unnecessarily – especially so in Esports.

Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends is leading the way in clamping down on verbal abuse and negative attitudes in professional gaming. It recently banned one pro player, describing him as the most “toxic in North America,” and now it's followed up with two further bans. This makes both Ilyas ‘mouz enVision' Harsema and Damien ‘aAa Linak' Lorthios ineligible to play in the entirety of Season 3 of the League, as well as having all of their accounts permanently banned, invalidating all in-game progress and unlocks.

Banned
Lorthios (left) and Hartsema (right).

Often times gamers stand up against such bans, suggesting that if people don't like the trash talking they shouldn't be playing in a competitive game. However when you look at some of the statistics published by Riot, you begin to understand why the ban is being upheld. Harsema for example, was reported in nearly a third of all matches – reporting occurs when other players complain about the behaviour of a certain player – which according to Riot is six times the average. He has also been punished 18 times in the past for his behaviour across multiple accounts, five of such instances having occurred in the past two months.

This apparently puts him in the top 0.06 per cent of punished accounts.

Lorthios wasn't much better, being reported in 20 per cent of his games and having one of his alternate accounts permanently banned for offensive language and verbal abuse of other players. Riot also reports that he has behaved similarly outside of the game – whether that is at official events or simply online incidents like on forums, it doesn't say.

KitGuru Says: While you can argue all you like that trash talking is part of a game, Riot, the creator and owner of the whole League of Legends property, repeatedly told these individuals to stop and they defied it. What did they think was going to happen?

Microsoft has announced that anyone found to have played the early release, pirated edition of Halo 4, will be given a lifetime Xbox Live ban. Some that have already played the game soon found themselves in receipt of an email from Microsoft that charged them with “prerelease title play.”

Eurogamer has a full screengrab of one of the official emails received by one of the ‘naughty' few that had to play Halo 4 before it was released.

Halo 4
Halo 4 is the first outing of Master Chief in over five years

The official Microsoft statement at the time of writing is as follows:

“We are aware of isolated cases in which Halo 4 content has been propped on the web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately.”

“Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services. Playing pirated copies of games, such as Halo 4, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans.”

Pre-release builds of Halo 4 began appearing over the weekend on popular torrent sites, which when downloaded could be played on hacked Xbox 360 consoles.

KitGuru Says: Maybe I'm missing something here, but if you're playing on a hacked Xbox 360 console, with a pre-release game, how are you trackable by Microsoft unless you're online? And if you are, why? Is it really worth the bragging rights of showing as playing Halo 4, if it means you can't go online again ever with that console?
