Although the visit was a little tense at times, President Obama's meeting with the Chinese president Xi Jingping in September did achieve one thing: an agreement that neither the United States or China would use their digital assets to hack one another to steal corporate secrets and prop up domestic companies. Despite that hand-shake deal however, security firm CrowdStrike Inc. is reporting that seven different U.S. companies have been attacked by Chinese hackers since that date.

There was a seemingly deliberate omission in the U.S./China deal which still permitted both countries to use hacking for national or political purposes, but though CrowdStrike believes the hackers in this instance were state-sponsored, the attacks appeared to be far more commercial. Firms hit included five U.S. tech and two pharmaceutical companies, all of which CrowdStrike claims were protected due to its software being readily available to shield them.

“[The] primary benefits of the intrusion seem clearly aligned to facilitate theft of intellectual property and trade secrets, rather than to conduct traditional, national-security-related intelligence collection,” a CrowdStrike spokesperson said (via Reuters).

While security firm FireEye agreed with CrowdStrike findings that several hacking attacks had taken place, it claimed it was too early to postulate on the aims of the espionage, suggesting that it may be that the attack was not purely economical in nature.

The White House is aware of the attacks, but has yet to announce and form of official response.

KitGuru Says: This ‘deal' between the two countries sounds unlikely to have much lasting effect. Do you see either China or the United States halting economic hacking any time soon?

Teased and talked about for several months, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom's Internet Party political group has now been officially launched, putting its policies out there for the first time and asking for member registrations.

On the newly launched website, Dotcom himself introduces the party (along with a parodied special guest) outlining some of its main policies:

Some of these include cheaper and unlimited internet, without bandwidth restrictions ; privacy for personal data and online interactions ; reform of copyright laws to loosen the hold of media lobby groups while protecting the rights of content creators ; encourage internet businesses to base themselves in New Zealand to create new jobs ; rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement ; school modernisation ; encouragement of green energy technologies and perhaps most interestingly, a drive for the national adoption of a digital currency.

In the first seven hours of life, the Internet Party attracted over 500 members, with more signing up every hour. However the party will need to secure at least one political seat, or 5 per cent of the vote when general elections take place this September. While Dotcom's big political rival and extradition opponent, John Key (current NZ PM) received almost 50 per cent of the vote in the last election, you have to imagine his apologies for illegal spying and willingness to get in bed with US authorities will have led some of his supporters astray.

The only other video the Internet Party has posted so far, is a parody called Project: Manifesto, which has US President Barack Obama visiting John Key to discuss Dotcom and then conducting a little raid of their own.

KitGuru Says: Whether Dotcom's party has much impact, I have to agree with a lot of his policies. Considering what my local MPs are like, I'd probably vote for his party.

While the Ask Me Anything threads on Reddit are often hosted by interesting and important people, tonight the cast just got a little more star studded. President Barack Obama began his own AMA about an hour ago and has been fielding questions from members.

While a sceptical mind might immediately jump to the conclusion that it's an impostor or a hoax, Obama was quick to provide proof. The official White House twitter account posted the message: “Hey, everyone: I'll be taking your questions online today. Ask yours here:http://OFA.BO/gBof44 -bo.” A verification image was linked to as well:

Well, we know who Obama was routing for in the big smartphone wars, don't we.

While there were some issues with Reddit itself as the word began to seep out that the President himself was taking questions, it soon stabilised and some real gems cropped up in conversation. One of the earliest questions involved internet freedoms and Mr Obama's plans to protect them. He answered by saying that: “Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too.” He promised to continue fighting to make sure the internet remains an “open forum for everybody,” especially from the perspective of those looking to make a business based around it.

He also touched on the space program and plans to increase funding. While he didn't out and out say that more money was in the pipeline, he reaffirmed commitments to future missions in our solar system, including an interest in landing on “a asteroid” [sic], as a pre-cursor to a manned mission to Mars.

This moment sparked perhaps the highlight of the event, when it was pointed out by one of the commenters that it was, “an asteroid, Mr President.” This was swiftly followed up by another that chided, “don't correct the President, neckbeard.”

The topics of conversation swing back and forth in tone, touching on Mr Obama's toughest decision in his presidency being when he decided to “surge our forces in Afghanistan,” because knowing of the “heroes that have fallen,” weighed heavily on his mind. Going back the other way, he also noted that the official White House beer was excellently tasty and would be available soon.

KitGuru Says: While barely a fraction of comments were eventually answered, the session was an enlightening one, as well as a smart one. While it's unlikely Mr Obama didn't have some assistance during his AMA, it humanises him far more than he's appeared before; especially in the eyes of internet denizens – something that will come in handy during election time. Not to mention all the press that this event will have drummed up.
