Alongside this, Aspyr is already working on a second update, as well as server-side updates to continue to improve the multiplayer.

It is worth noting that there are still many negative reviews coming through on Steam, some of which have been posted or updated since the roll out of this first patch. With that in mind, it is probably worth waiting a while longer before picking up the game if you haven't already – although if you are a single-player person, then the campaigns do seem to be getting an uptick in positive feedback.

Fans were already quick to notice the AI upscaling used for Aspyr's recent Battlefront: Classic Collection remasters, with this being seen as the main culprit for the game's massive 70GB+ install size. As it turns out, the launch version of the game may also contain mods without the creator's permission.

As spotted by IGN, modder ‘iamashaymin', who first brought Xbox-exclusive characters Kit Fisto and Asajj Ventress. The mod relied on swapping the character models out with two characters already in the game but it was the best solution given that these characters were previously only available on the original Xbox version of Battlefront 2. Shaymin believes his mod was used to bring these characters to Aspyr's new Battlefront Classic Collection:

The modder points out differences between the official models and the mod versions. However, Aspyr previously claimed that this re-release does “not include any code or content taken from uncredited sources”.

Aspyr has not yet commented on these claims, but the studio is busy trying to improve the release. Since launch, the Battlefront Classic Collection has been plagued with buggy servers and poor connectivity for multiplayer matches, something that the studio is specifically looking to address with future updates.

Yesterday, the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had a very disappointing launch. Players logged into the game to find a low number of available servers, bugs, and an unreasonably large 70GB+ install size. Now, Aspyr has spoken out about some of the game's problems, promising fixes.

Aspyr addressed the situation on its website, saying: “At launch, we experienced critical errors with our network infrastructure. The result was incredibly high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and servers not appearing in the browser. Since launch, we’ve been working to address these issues and increase network stability, and we will continue our efforts until our network infrastructure is stabilized to prevent further outages.”

There is no timeline for fixes just yet but more players have had success getting into multiplayer matches. Unfortunately, the connection is often poor, but hopefully that can be ironed out over the next few days.

Aspyr did not address the game's sheer install size, which comes in at over 70GB on PC, something that many attribute to the game's use of AI upscaling. For comparison, the original games take up less than 25GB combined.

There was plenty of buzz when Aspyr announced plans to launch the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, bringing back the original two games with full online multiplayer. Unfortunately, the game's launch today has not gone as planned, swiftly garnering negative reviews due to major issues.

The Battlefront Classic Collection packages together remasters for the original Battlefront and Battlefront 2 games, promising a revival of the 64-player multiplayer servers and classic game modes, as well as some new map and character additions. The game also carries a £30 price tag.

At launch, roughly 10,000 PC players attempted to get into multiplayer matches, only to be met with a measly three available 64-player servers. Players also quickly ran into issues connecting to multiplayer sessions at all and when they could get in, bugs would soil the gameplay experience.

As a result of this, the game currently sits with a ‘mostly negative' overall review score on Steam, with many questioning how the game was allowed to release at all with its non-functional multiplayer. Aspyr has yet to comment on the backlash.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully Aspyr can quickly put out some fixes but the idea of only having three 64-player servers sounds insane to me. This is a Star Wars game, there was always going to be more than 200 players looking to play in large-scale matches.

During today's Nintendo Direct, we got another surprise Star Wars announcement, and it is one that is bound to make a lot of people happy. Aspyr is now releasing remasters for the original Star Wars: Battlefront games, complete with support for online multiplayer.

The Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection is launching for PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch on the 14th of March. The game will support up to 64-player online matches, so players can jump straight back in and relive the glory days prior to EA's Battlefront reboot series.

While the game will support modern resolutions don't expect a huge visual upgrade. It is still the old-school game complete with the older art and textures in place, but it will look sharper on modern displays.

The collection includes Battlefront 1 & 2, as well as bonus maps for both games and two new bonus heroes for Battlefront 2, including Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto.

When EA picked up the Star Wars license almost a decade ago, the first thing the company did was revive the Battlefront series, handing the keys over to DICE to create new multiplayer shooters in the Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, it looks like there won't be a Battlefront 3 any time soon, at least not under EA, as the publisher scrapped plans for the game.

According to Tom Henderson, a leaker with a good track record when it comes to DICE projects, the studio tried to pitch Battlefront 3 to EA, but the publisher scrapped the idea. In part, Battlefront 3 was not picked up due to licensing costs, as it takes “20% more sales to make the same money”.  Additionally, key developers on the Battlefront franchise, including lead designers, have left DICE to pursue other projects.

EA initially signed a ten-year licensing agreement with Disney for exclusive rights to the Star Wars IP, but specific terms on the deal were never disclosed. The deal also seems to have been cut short a little, as Disney began giving the Star Wars license to other publishers recently as well. At the moment, we know that companies like Ubisoft and Quantic Dream are working on Star Wars projects, and Aspyr Media is currently reviving Knights of the Old Republic without any input from EA or BioWare.

Battlefront being cancelled isn't too surprising either, as EA botched the launch of Battlefront II. The game eventually gained a more positive reception after a year of free updates, but sales remained unimpressive. EA does have two other Star Wars projects in the works at other studios, one of which is likely Jedi Fallen Order 2. The second in-development title is also said to be a single-player narrative-focused game.

KitGuru Says: Perhaps at some point in the future, another studio will get to have a go at rebooting Battlefront with its single-player mode intact. Until then though, it looks like this series of Star Wars shooters will be left dormant.

As the exclusivity agreement between EA and Star Wars begins to come to an end, the publisher has reflected on its relationship with Disney and the Star Wars IP. Despite a number of controversies, as well as some cancelled titles, the partnership appears to have paid off overall, with more than $3 Billion generated in revenue and 50 million copies sold.

During a recent earnings call (as reported by Gamesindustry.biz), EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that across its various Star Wars releases (Battlefront, Battlefront II, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Squadrons) the total number of copies sold have surpassed 52 million units. For comparison sake, the entire Street Fighter franchise, across all of its titles, have only sold a total of 45 million units.

These games, alongside free-to-play offerings such as Star Wars: galaxy of Heroes, have brought more than $3 Billion in revenue for EA from this partnership. Though the exclusivity agreement may be ending, EA’s output of Star Wars games isn’t, with Wilson claiming that “I don't think you should imagine that the fact that some other people will build some Star Wars games is going to change our commitment to that IP or our ability to build the appropriate number of games.”

Though the relationship launched to a rocky start, EA eventually managed to release a number of Star Wars titles which were received with a great deal of praise from both critics and fans alike. It will be interesting to see whether Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars title will be equally as lucrative.

KitGuru says: Are you surprised by these numbers? Did you think it would be higher or lower? Are you glad to see the exclusivity agreement ending? Let us know down below.

Given how disastrous the launch of Star Wars Battlefront 2 was, a sequel wasn't necessarily expected for 2020. However, it turns out that EA was working on a spin-off of sorts, although that game has been cancelled, as has the game that was rising from the ashes of Ragtag, the project that Visceral was working on before closing down.

As reported by Kotaku's Jason Schreier, EA has recently been shaking up a few things internally, This began with EA Vancouver transitioning into support studio roles for Anthem and Apex Legends, meanwhile Criterion is working on Need for Speed once again. With all of that in mind, the small Battlefront spin-off title that EA Vancouver was working on has now been scrapped.

The game was codenamed ‘Viking' and was due to release in Fall 2020 alongside next-gen consoles. EA Vancouver and Criterion were working on the game but heads soon began butting over creative decisions, with one source describing it as a ‘too many cooks' situation. Because it looked like the game would not meet a 2020 deadline, EA executives decided to pull the plug.

This follows on from efforts on ‘Orca', the codename for the game based on Visceral's cancelled ‘Ragtag'. Star Wars is still in a turbulent position at EA but there is a small bit of good news here, as EA has apparently approved a sequel for Jedi: Fallen Order, while EA Motive has a new Star Wars game that is described as ‘unusual'.

EA has come under fire many times over the years for various reasons, most of them pertaining to poor game launches or microtransactions. Last year, we saw the biggest backlash yet thanks to the loot box system in Battlefront 2, which ended up turning the heads of politicians and government agencies around the world. EA is hoping to avoid this situation from occurring again, with a new ‘moral compass' system in place.

During an interview with gamesindustry.biz, EA's Vice President of Strategic Growth, Matt Bilbey, sat down to have a chat about streaming. Towards the end of the interview, the subject of FIFA Ultimate packs and loot boxes comes up, which led to Bilbey talking about the publisher's new “development framework”, which aims to make ‘live service' games “fair and fun”.

Essentially, after the Battlefront 2 controversy, Bilbey and EA's Chief Designer, Patrick Söderlund, internally redesigned EA's “game development framework and testing platforms”. This is in an effort to ensure that development teams are “getting the right guidance”, the new system is now known as an “EA moral compass”.

Here is the full quote from Bilbey: “I ran a team internally with Patrick post-Battlefront to actually redesign our game development framework and testing platforms to ensure we're giving our game teams the right guidance–we'll call it an EA moral compass–at the beginning of development so that we're designing our live service early, we're testing it early, testing it with gamers who are giving us feedback so we ensure those pillars of fairness, value, and fun are true”.

The fact that high-ups at EA recognise the fact that the company needs a self described moral compass to begin with shows a certain level of self-awareness that we don't often see. With that said, there probably should have been something like that in place from the start. Hopefully by the time Battlefield V and Anthem roll around, we'll see some of these changes in place.

KitGuru Says: EA tends to go through this cycle every couple of years. Something goes horribly wrong, fixes will take place, EA starts to look favourable again and then we repeat from step one. Do you guys think EA will finally make a change for the better?

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is just a couple of months away but if you are in need of some Star Wars action ahead of time, then EA appears to be happy to oblige. Right now, the season pass for 2015's Star Wars Battlefront is now free on Origin, giving you access to all of the DLC the game has to offer.

EA has been distancing itself from the Season Pass model a bit (with the exception of Battlefield). Titanfall 2 featured free DLC updates rather than a season pass and this same model will be applied to Battlefront 2. Battlefront I on the other hand did have a season pass and it actually contains some of the best content the game has to offer.

Battlefront's DLC includes maps for Bespin and Sullust, Jabba The Hutt's palace, the Death Star and another battle themed after Rogue One. If you have Battlefront on PC, you can head to Origin's ‘On the House' section and add the season pass to your account free of charge.

KitGuru Says: Battlefront didn't keep my attention for long, though I must admit, some of the DLC did look fun. I wouldn't mind hopping back in to see the Death Star now that it's free. Did any of you play Battlefront back when it came out? Did you keep up with the DLCs at all?

Taking a similar tack to Ubisoft with its Assassin's Creed series, EA has announced that one of its flagship franchises, Battlefield, will be taking a break next year. In fact it may be another couple of years before we see another Battlefield game. Don't fret though, EA will still release a big shooter in 2017: a new Star Wars Battlefront.

While it may not seem to be a big announcement to rest a franchise for a year or two, with one like Battlefield, this represents a huge break from tradition. There has been a Battlefield release almost every year since 2002. There was Battlefield 1942, followed by Modern Combat, Northern Strike, Bad Company, Heroes, 1943, Bad Company 2, Battlefield Online, Battlefield 3 and so on.

The only reason there wasn't a new Battlefield release in 2014 is because of the bevy of DLC that EA DICE made for Battlefield 4.

battlefield1

The announcement for the delay in a new Battlefield game came from EA's chief financial officer, Blake Jorgensen, who stated during an earnings call this week that it would be a couple of years before a new Battlefield game was released and that EA would instead rely on Star Wars to bring in the shooter dollars in 2017 (thanks VideoGamer).

Battlefield 1 has proved a very successful release too, with a number of people preferring it to the Call of Duty release this year. It even managed to do well even when released alongside Titanfall 2, another EA shooter. Reviews for it were strong and people praised the setting and the campaign's willingness to address the horrors of the first World War – even if the multiplayer smooths over them a little.

But in 2017 it looks like EA is more interested in developing its Battlefront brand, with plans to make the next entry in the series bigger and more in line with the Force Awakens movie and its upcoming sequel.

Aside from the game's focus on simple, arcade-like mechanics, one of the bigger criticisms that many had against Star Wars: Battlefront prior to its launch was the lack of single-player campaign. While we never really got the full story previously, during a recent EA investor briefing, one of the publisher's executives finally explained that Battlefront's campaign was cut out in-order to ensure that the game launched just before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

EA Studios boss, Patrick Söderlund explained: “The one thing that we got criticized for was the lack of a single-player campaign. It was a conscious decision we made due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact.”

Battlefront-e1442909203439

While DICE did a great job of capturing the look of Star Wars with its Battlefront maps, many players also had issue with the lack of depth in the multiplayer. It seems that the studio were aiming to capture a wider, casual audience, rather than the core fans.

However, according to Söderlund, these things may change in Battlefront 2, which has already been confirmed as in development: “I think the team created a really good game based on the premise that we had. I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a very different demographic than a traditional EA game. So from that perspective, it's a success. Are we happy with the 75 rating? No. Is that something we're going to cure going forward? Absolutely”.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people like to claim that Battlefront was Battlefield with a Star Wars skin but honestly, if that were true we would have ended up with a better game. Hopefully the next Battlefront game we get will include a better amount of content.

Star Wars: Battlefront is set to get some new content soon. Not only did the game get a big update this week, but EA and DICE have also announced new details for the game's first expansion, called ‘Outer Rim', which will feature new maps, weapons, hero characters and a new game mode.

The Outer Rim expansion will take players to Sullust and Jabba The Hutt's palace on Tatooine.

No information was shared on the brand new game mode but EA has said that those that have stuck with Battlefront so far can expect some free additional content in March as well.

Following on from the Outer Rim expansion, there are three more planned, including Bespin, Death Star and an untitled one that won't arrive until next year.

KitGuru Says: Star Wars: Battlefront seemingly dropped off of the map for a while there with very little news about future content or updates. However, it looks like DICE is ramping things up over the next month or so. Will any of you be jumping back into Battlefront? I must admit I haven't really played much of it since late last year.

A common theme seems to be spreading when it comes to first person shooters in the last couple of years- they are starting to ditch campaigns. With notable examples being Evolve, Star Wars: Battlefront, Titanfall and Rainbow Six: Siege. It would also seem that Gears of War creator, Cliff Bleszinski has a good idea as to why as he explains that single-player FPS campaigns can cost a studio as much as 75 percent of its budget.

In an interview with PC Gamer, the former Gears of War developer, who is currently working on a new multiplayer shooter known as ‘Lawbreakers', said that “campaigns cost the most money: it's usually 75 percent of the budget”.

LawBreakers_Screenshot

It would seem that Bleszinski doesn't always consider this to be a great investment as he went on to say that most people “burn through the campaign in a weekend” before moving on to multiplayer. Bleszinski will be bringing this mindset into his next game, Lawbreakers, which won't feature a campaign, instead opting to go the route of being multiplayer only.

This isn't an entirely new thing, after all, multiplayer-only FPS games have existed on the PC for years. However, this is a new direction for larger Triple-A studios like EA and Ubisoft.

KitGuru Says: When it comes to huge multiplayer franchises, a lot of people don't play the campaign or at the very least, they spend twice as much time in multiplayer, so it is easy to see why studios would begin to think that campaigns aren't always a great investment. What do you guys think of multiplayer only shooters? Do you think studios should tack on a campaign to primarily multiplayer shooters?

Back in the day, there were plans for a Star Wars Battlefront III, prior to Disney buying the Star Wars franchise and EA striking a ten-year licensing deal. Over time, we have seen little bits of pre-alpha footage here and there but now, someone has leaked an actual build of the game.

In the post, the leaker said: “After a lot of work I managed to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront III and wanted to share the infamously cancelled game that I'm sure many of you wanted to play. I know not everyone will get the chance to play this immediately, but over time, I expect the modding community to be able to change that.

xhueg-image8 (1)

The files are actually for the Xbox 360 version of the game so unless some modders step up, you will need a Xbox 360 development kit or a debug unit to run the game. There is a working Xbox 360 emulator kicking around right now called Xenia but that is still in the early stages of development and Battlefront III won't work with it just yet. There is a 5.57GB download for the prototype but given the rules of Reddit, you will have to do some digging around of your own for the download link.

The original poster did say that should this be removed from Mega due to a copyright claim, then he won't be reloading it.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people were looking forward to the original Battlefront III before it was cancelled. I would be interested in trying out the prototype build myself just to learn a bit more about the early stages of game development and what goes into a pre-alpha triple A title.

Star Wars: Battlefront is now out in the wild and while it didn't quite meet expectations, this does free up DICE to begin working on other exciting projects. While part of the studio will be working on season pass content for Battlefront, some of the core developers have already moved on to a new project- the next Battlefield, which will likely launch in October/November in 2016.

In a post on Twitter, DICE developer, Dan Vaderlind confirmed that the next Battlefield is on the way: “Now that we've shipped Battlefront and a part of the team continues to work on it, I am moving on to another project, the next Battlefield”, his tweet reads.

battlefield-4-screenshot-61-600x315-c

Star Wars Battlefront is more of an arcade-style, casual shooter, so it will be nice to see DICE return to Battlefield, which has more of a skill element involved in play, along with a much heavier team focus, with squad set ups and commanders.

EA essentially confirmed that Battlefield 5 would be a thing last year, stating that the new entry to the series from DICE will  move away from the cops and robbers theme of Battlefield: Hardline. A holiday 2016 release date is also being targeted, which makes sense as EA likes to try and take on Call of Duty each year.

KitGuru Says: I only very recently started getting in to Battlefield properly with a group of friends, so I'm excited to see what DICE does with the next instalment. Are any of you still playing Battlefield 4 or Hardline?

Recently, Gamestop suggested that sales of Star Wars: Battlefront fell “short of expectations”, which may have been true for the brick and mortar store chain but EA's Peter Moore claims that from the publisher's view, Battlefront is far from the sales flop that some are currently suggesting, though exact sales figures are still not being revealed.

Last week, Gamestop's COO said: “EA's Star Wars Battlefront fell short of expectations. We're not going to quantify it in actual number, but we had high expectations that diminished somewhat as it got closer, and then it failed to hit those lowered expectations.”

Battlefront-e14429092034391

In response to this, EA's COO, Peter Moore said: “The comments were interesting and little bit of a surprise to us particularly as the CFO in the call then started to correct the COO as the call went on. So from our perspective I'm here to reaffirm our guidance of 13 million units sold in for the fiscal year.”

“There is no weakness that is perceptible yet in the title and I want everybody understand that based on where we think this title is and based on the marketing beats ahead of us in particular the movie launch over the next two weeks we feel very comfortable we're going to hit the guidance that we've given analysts, investors and Wall Street alike.”

Previously, EA had revealed that it expected to sell 13 million copies of Battlefront during this fiscal year, and with the new movie coming out in two weeks, we can expect a bit more of a marketing push.

KitGuru Says: Many have expressed disappointment in the way that Battlefront turned out and I don't blame them, the game does seem a little short on content and as far as shooters go, it isn't really much of a ‘core' game. However, given all of the Star Wars hype floating around this month, I would doubt that the game would flop.

The latest shooter from EA and DICE launches this week, just in time for the new Star Wars movie. The game features plenty of game modes and a few ‘missions', which are there in place of a single player campaign.

Now there are some caveats to this deal. Star Wars Battlefront is only being given away with purchases of the R9 Fury, meaning purchases of the Fury X or the Nano won't count. The promo will also end at some point in Q1 2016.

We live in an age where season passes are the norm but quite a few of them offer very little for the cost, like the one for Batman Arkham Knight. However, some of them bring a bit more to the table. EA is about to have its biggest game launch of the year in the form of Star Wars: Battlefront, and ahead of its release this week, we now know the DLC plan for the next 12 months or so.

EA has revealed the Season pass content for Battlefront, which will include four ‘expansions' in total, similarly to how Battlefield works with Premium.

Battlefront-e14429092034391

The season pass will get you access to 16 additional multiplayer maps, four new game modes, a ‘shoot first' emote, four new hero and villain characters along with new weapons, Star Cards and vehicles for both the Rebels and Imperials. The season pass itself comes with a hefty price tag, costing £39.99, so it will be up to you to decide if that content justifies the price.

Star Wars Battlefront launches on the PC, Xbox One and PS4 on the 19th of November. The first season pass DLC will be out early next year.

One of the most anticipated game launches of the year is coming tomorrow, with the release of Fallout 4. Additionally, we also have Star Wars Battlefront to look forward to next week, so in order to keep PC gamers up to speed, Nvidia has launched a new WHQL certified Game Ready driver, to prepare GTX GPU users for the new games. This is part of Nvidia's recently announced mission to have a Game Ready driver release for every single big holiday launch title.

Nvidia is doing the smart thing and bundling multiple game optimizations in to a single release, after all, 11 driver releases for the games coming out over the next six weeks seems a little excessive. The driver released today (358.91) encompasses Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront and Blizzard's upcoming StarCraft II expansion, Legacy of the Void.

game-ready-drivers-e1446731499478

Fallout 4 comes out tomorrow, along with Legacy of the Void. Battlefront on the other hand doesn't release until the 17th of November, so that one is a little further away. As far as GPU recommendations go, Nvidia is recommending that Fallout 4 players wanting to get 60 frames per second at 1080p have a GTX 970, while 1440p gamers should be equipped with a GTX 980Ti to ensure buttery smoothness at all times.

It seems that EA has some pretty high expectations for its upcoming shooter, Star Wars Battlefront. The brand alone will of course help copies sell and thanks to heavy interest in the beta, EA has raised its sales expectations for the game- right now the publisher reckons it can shift 13 million copies of Battlefront by the end of March 2016, by contrast, Battlefront II sold around 6 million copies.

Earlier this year, EA initially had an expectation of ten million copies sold by March next year. However, since then the open beta attracted almost ten million players on its own, causing EA to raise the stakes.

Star-Wars-Battlefront-600x338

The new figure was revealed during EA's quarterly earnings call, during which CEO, Andrew Wilson, said: “What we have seen is that Star Wars is bringing in two groups that are very important groups to us. One are gamers that have lapsed, traditionally who have been big gamers in the past and maybe haven't played for a while, and it's certainly been a catalyst for those people to come back into the gaming universe as it relates to console. And two, onboarding a new younger age demographic.”

According to EA's Peter Moore, pre orders for the game have been strong so far too. It seems that EA is hoping that the release of the new Star Wars movie will provide a bump in Battlefront interest as well, which makes sense.

KitGuru Says: Battlefront is undoubtedly going to be a big game, anything attached to Star Wars is going to do pretty well. DICE wrapped up the Star Wars Battlefront open beta late this afternoon, so the team is now moving on to preparing for the game's release in just a few weeks time. Once the servers closed down to the public, DICE and EA revealed some interesting tidbits, including the fact that over nine million people gave the beta a go, twice that of the Destiny beta back in 2013.

Battlefront is now the single largest beta in EA's history as a publisher. Obviously the Star Wars name will have played a big part in that in addition to the fact that it was open to everyone. Hopefully the sheer numbers will have helped EA prepare the servers for launch day, so we can avoid any horrific connectivity issues as seen in the past.

rendition1.img

Obviously there is still work to be done. Battlefront only had three modes open to the public over the weekend: Drop Zone, Walker Assault and the co-op wave fighter mode. Unfortunately, Walker Assault was horribly unbalanced, so that will need fixing for a start. Hopefully these issues can also be avoided in the other game modes, of which there are quite a few.

Aside from that, EA did finally announce the game's season pass, which will offer four ‘expansions' to the game for $50/£39.99. It's expensive for a season pass, particularly one we know absolutely nothing about. We could potentially get some decent content, or we could just get stuck with map packs, so perhaps avoid pre-ordering unannounced DLC.

Battlefront itself comes out on the 17th of November in the US and the 19th in Europe. We don't know why the release is staggered like that, particularly these days, when most gamers have moved on to digital purchases. However, those on the Xbox One will get access early either way, thanks to the EA Access program.

As I'm sure most of you have heard by now, DICE is holding a Star Wars Battlefront open beta- it has actually been live for a few days already. The beta test was scheduled to finish off today but the studio has decided to extend things a bit further at the last-minute. The Battlefront beta, which includes two multiplayer modes and a co-op wave mission, will now run until Tuesday the 13th of October.

The tests over the next 24 hours are intended to stress test the server infrastructure under some extreme conditions and scenarios. This way, DICE can prepare for the worst ahead of time, rather than botching up the game's launch on the 17th of November.

The studio has warned that players may well face issues they hadn't come across earlier on in the beta: “These tests are to help us find some extreme scenarios, and that means some players may experience occasional issues such as being kicked from the game or losing connectivity”.

I have been playing the game a bit myself and while it definitely feels like a Star Wars game, the Walker Assault mission has some pretty bad balancing issues. The imperial team definitely seems to have an advantage over the Rebels, though DICE likely won't fix this until the final game launch in around five weeks time.

KitGuru Says: If there is one thing I can say about Battlefront, it's that it definitely feels like an authentic Star Wars game. However, at this point in time the Walker Assault game mode can be very frustrating and I'm not too sure how long the game will stay fun for. Have any of you been playing the Battlefront beta this weekend? What are your thoughts so far?

The Star Wars Battlefront open beta kicked off yesterday and swarms of players have rushed to try it out, so much so that EA and DICE need to round up a few more servers to support the load. According to the Battlefront Beta support page, new servers are currently being implemented for the game, which means more players should have a smooth experience, free of connectivity issues.

Due to the way the matchmaking system works, when you hit play on Star Wars Battlefront, you will either find a game, or you won't, the player has no control in that area, so some found themselves unable to get in to matches last night.

The good thing is, this is a beta test, which is used to point out the problems prior to the final launch. Now that EA and DICE have a bigger expectation for the amount of players looking to get in to Battlefront, the official game launch should hopefully go a bit smoother, with less matchmaking and server finding issues.

The open beta currently has two maps you can play on, you can either do the Walker Assault mission, which is set on Hoth, or you can do the Tatooine Drop Zone mission. There isn't a ton of variety available right now but from my own personal experience, the game seems to run well on the PC and it has captured the Star Wars atmosphere brilliantly, though I do have some concerns as to how long it will remain fun.

KitGuru Says: Battlefront is fun enough right now, though it does lack variety. Hopefully this can be solved by the final release but I do worry that in a year's time, people won't be as interested anymore and those left will find it increasingly difficult to find a match. We've seen this happen to both Titanfall and Evolve in the last year, which is why I will always prefer games that support community run servers. Have any of you tried Battlefront yet? What do you think so far?

The Star Wars: Battlefront beta kicks off on Thursday, with the final release scheduled for next month. Those looking to pick up the game can now see if their rigs meet the requirements as DICE has revealed the recommended and minimum specifications for the PC version of the game over on Origin.

The minimum system requirements include an Intel  Core i3 CPU, 8GB of RAM and either a GTX 660 or an AMD Radeon HD 7850. A 64-bit OS is required and the game will take up 40GB of hard drive space in total.

Battlefront-e1442909203439

The recommended specifications include:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10 or later
  • Processor (Intel): Intel i5 6600 or equivalent
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Hard Drive: At least 40 GB of free space
  • Graphics card (NVIDIA): nVidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB
  • Graphics card (AMD): AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB
  • DirectX: 11.1 Compatible video card or equivalent
  • Online Connection Requirements: 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection

The game itself uses the Frostbyte engine, so users should expect performance similar to the most recent Battlefield games. Chances are if you can run those well, you'll be fine here.

KitGuru Says: These system requirements seem reasonable enough and the Frostbyte engine is optimized quite well on the PC. A lot of our readers are sporting decent rigs too. Are any of you planning on playing Battlefront this week?

Star Wars: Battlefront is just on the horizon, with an open beta scheduled for this week and a release for next month. A few weeks back we learned that the game would not contain a server browser option, even on the PC, for those who want to set up their own community games or tournaments. Now, DICE has explained the reasoning behind this decision.

In an interview with PC Gamer published today, Battlefront's Design Director, Niklas Fergaeus explained: “The nature of the matchmaker that we have is to just ensure that people have a fair and even playground. That's the thing. We want all Star Wars fans to be able to play this game and have a good time, and in doing that, we want to make sure that whenever players jump in, they get matchmade to players of their own level, their own skill, so they can have fun and a fair playing field.”

Battlefront-Screenshot-e1434402955434

Fergaeus singled out ‘Star Wars' fans specifically twice while explaining the need for a matchmaking system. It seems that DICE is under the impression that Star Wars fans are a casual audience, which to some extent may be true, Star Wars is a franchise so massive that a game could attract new players to the FPS genre. However, this approach does come at the cost of some features that a hardcore shooter crowd would appreciate.

The final tidbit from the interview is that the matchmaking system will in-fact let you play on which map you'd like to play specifically, rather than being thrown in to an endless rotation with a limited selection each round. The Star Wars: Battlefront beta launches on the 8th of October, with the final game set to release on the 17th of November.

KitGuru Says: Being a big shooter player myself, I do wish that DICE has chosen to include some additional features, like a server browser or community server  support. Those on the PC appreciate that stuff in particular. Either way, I'll be giving the game a shot in a few days when the beta launches. Are any of you planning on trying Battlefront before it comes out?

DICE recently announced the Star Wars Battlefront beta for October, though at the time some of the finer details were left out. Now, we know quite a bit more about the beta, for starters, we now have an exact launch date. We also know that it will be open to everyone on the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It will also be playable offline while also including co-op and split screen gameplay.

The beta is scheduled to kick off on the 8th of October, DICE has revealed, it will then end on the 12th of October. The beta will include the 40-player Walker Assault game mode on Hoth as well as a Drop Zone mission on Sullust, a new planet. There will be a Survival Mission mode, set on Tatooine, which we have seen some gameplay of previously and was also in the Alpha.

There will be AI bots present in some multiplayer matches. One example of this is the Fighter Squadron gamemode, which will feature ten AI players on each team, these bots will act similarly to the ones found in Titanfall. Players will have access to a variety of in-game weapons, though DICE hasn't released a specific list.

Aside from that, we don't have an exact date for the beta, we just know that it is coming early next month, ahead of its release at the end of November.

KitGuru Says: The Star Wars Battlefront Open Beta kicks off in exactly two weeks time! Will any of you be trying it out?

A few weeks ago it was revealed that DICE's take on Star Wars Battlefront wouldn't come with its own server browser, favouring a matchmaking service instead. However, that doesn't mean that the game won't run on dedicated servers, which should be good news to many.

Dedicated servers were confirmed by the game's Senior Producer, Jamie Keen, who said: “We’ll still have dedicated servers. Absolutely. It’s one of the hallmarks of making sure we deliver an unparalleled online servers for the game”, during an interview with PlayStation Lifestyle.

Unfortunately, the game will still be using a skill-based matchmaking system to organize games and ensure all of the maps get played equally. The biggest downside to this being that you can't pick a favourite server, choose exactly which map you want to play or who you end up playing with.

The game itself launches on the 17th of November, though an open beta is scheduled for early October. Additionally, those in the EA Access program on Xbox One will get one week early access to the game before launch.

KitGuru Says: I don't necessarily mind matchmaking on consoles but for PC games I tend to prefer a proper server browser. A lot of people like that extra bit of control and its good for building up a long-lasting community. Either way, at least the game will have dedicated servers, which is a bit of a relief. Like many multiplayer games these days, Star Wars Battlefront will be moving away from traditional server browsers in favour of a new matchmaking system. While matchmaking systems have become much more common in shooters over the years, it seems that many were still hoping for a server browser as plenty of fans have voiced their disappointment.

Obviously the upsides to having a server browser is greater control over who you play with, along with what maps and modes you end up on. Additionally, you can avoid those with high ping for a smoother connection experience.

star-wars-battlefront-header-600x337

While matchmaking systems are good for allowing developers to ensure that all maps get played, they can be inconvenient for many players, particularly when a player-base dwindles as it becomes harder to find a decent game. All we need to do is look at Evolve in its current state to find proof of that.

Either way, we'll find out how Battlefront holds up next month, when the beta launches on the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

KitGuru Says: I've always preferred server browsers on my PC games, though I'm not necessarily against matchmaking . Unfortunately, those systems make it much harder for smaller player-bases to keep playing.
