The RTX 4090 offers incredible performance, but it comes at a significant cost. Still, there are many willing to pay the price and we are already seeing Founders Edition cards swiftly selling out. To help with this, Nvidia is introducing a new ‘priority access' queue system for buyers, so you can register and have the chance to purchase down the line once you move up in the queue.

The system is similar to something former Nvidia partner, EVGA, did during the RTX 30 series rollout. Due to high demand, EVGA also had a Priority Access program to help customers get hold of a GPU. Nvidia's system works a bit differently. The company will send out waves of invites to join the queue through the GeForce Experience, giving users a unique URL to obtain a Founders Edition card. In many instances, this unique URL will lead you to a partnered retailer with access to Founders Edition stock.

Unfortunately, priority access isn't available worldwide. For now, it's exclusive to specific countries and retailers, but the program is still in a testing phase, so we may see it grow in the future. The list of retailers and respective counties is the following:

  • Best Buy (United States)
  • Scan (United Kingdom)
  • NBB (Germany & Netherlands)
  • LDLC (France, Italy, and Spain)

At this point, it's unclear how Nvidia selects which users get an invite. At the very least, you will need to have GeForce Experience installed in order to get one.

KitGuru says: Are you hoping to get your hands on an RTX 4090? Will you be looking to take advantage of Nvidia's queue system? Or will you be trying your luck with retail restocks?

2021 marks a special year for Xbox as it is the 20th anniversary of the release of Microsoft’s first console. Ahead of its birthday on the 15th of November, a special edition 20th anniversary Xbox controller has leaked online, showcasing a polarising design.

As reported by VGC, the US-based retailer Best Buy accidentally revealed this controller in all its glory – ruining Microsoft’s strategy of slowly unveiling the peripheral. The description for the controller reads as follows: “Inspired by the styles and innovations of the past, this 20th Anniversary Special Edition Xbox wireless controller brings you the best of the last 20 years.”

The controller itself “features a transparent black design with vibrant green details that stay true to Xbox’s signature style while thoughtfully designed buttons and a hybrid D-pad enable precision, tactical gameplay.”

The controller certainly has a striking design, and one that may not be for everyone. There is no denying however that it is quintessentially Xbox, and calls back to the very first console released by the company in 2001.

With Best Buy revealing the controller, it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft gives up on its slow rollout of the announcement, or if they will continue as planned. Either way, it will be interesting to see higher quality renders which are undoubtedly set to be released with the official announcement (which will likely take place on or before the anniversary on the 15th of November).

KitGuru says: What do you think of the design? Do you like translucent technology? Will you pick this up? Let us know down below.

Huawei has taken a massive hit in the United States market in recent months, as the US government dropped all contracts with the company after claims that the smartphone manufacturer was in the pocket of the Chinese authorities. Huawei has now fired back, calling the accusations of espionage preposterous and insinuated that it might be a front to quell competition.

Since the US government has backed away from the Chinese tech giant, American businesses have follow suit. US carriers refused to support the latest Huawei Mate 10 flagship device and Best Buy has completely withdrawn its sales of Huawei handsets.

The accusations from the US government particularly centre around the threat that Huawei supposedly poses to 5G technology, which is still in development. Company head Richard Yu, believes that this has less to do with security and more to do with manufacturer competition.

“US authorities have made a series of allegations against Huawei that simply aren't true. We pose no security threat in any country,” reads Huawei’s statement. “Huawei is a 100 per cent employee-owned company. No government agency has ever tried to intervene in our operations or decisions.

Image: Huawei P20

“US authorities should not base major legislative decisions on speculation and rumour. Our products and solutions are trusted in more than 170 countries and regions. In 30 years, not a single operator has experienced a security issue with our equipment. This includes US operators.”

Unfortunately for Huawei, this couldn’t come at a worse time as the company recently debuted its P20 and P20 Pro smartphones, with the latter being the first device to sport three rear cameras. While the handset is set to compete against rivals such as Samsung and Apple, its lack of footing in the US could cause serious damage to company profits and, subsequently, shares.

Huawei goes on to describe how important its efforts on rural areas are, stating that the loss of its presence in the US could result in “fewer options available to them, and the consumers and businesses that depend on them will have less access to quality and convenient telecommunications services.”

KitGuru Says: It’s unlikely that this will change with the Trump administration in place, however Huawei does have a large presence elsewhere in the world. Of course this isn’t ideal, but selling well in Europe and Asia will at least keep the company’s head above water. What do you think of Huawei handsets?

The virtual reality revolution isn't going quite as smoothly as Oculus VR predicted, as its parent company, Facebook, is set to close 200+ of the VR firm's demo stations around the U.S.. This comes amid reports that some of the demo stations would often sit for days at a time completely unused.

As Oculus spokesperson did confirm Business Insider's report, but called the move a “seasonal change,” rather than a failing of the booths to engage the public. Oculus said that moving forward, it would target larger outlets and markets only, but that customers at Best Buy would still find hundreds of outlets around the U.S. and Canada where they can try out a Rift headset with Touch controllers.

“We still believe the best way to learn about VR is through a live demo,” said Oculus' Andrea Schubert. “We’re going to find opportunities to do regular events and pop ups in retail locations and local communities throughout the year.”

Source: Best Buy

Before this contraction, Oculus had demo stations built into 500+ Best Buy stores around the country, with many more locations selling the hardware. While they will all continue to do the latter, the number of the former will be quite drastically reduced.

Workers at the booths may be let go as part of the move, prompting some to release anonymous statements that suggest it wasn't always consumer disinterest which proved problematic. One was quoted as saying that Oculus software bugs often made it impossible to demo the headset effectively.

Facebook certainly isn't pulling back from virtual reality development though. It continues to spend millions on content and hardware advances and there is even said to be talks of it launching bespoke Oculus storefronts to demo and sell the hardware.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This is a blow to the VR roll out and suggests it's going far slower than expected. It could be that the hardware still isn't quite ready for mass appeal, but anyone who has tried a Rift or Vive knows that we're on the cusp of something amazing with this kind of experience.

Since demand for Apple Watch exceeded supply in the first months of availability, Apple only sold its popular gadgets via its online and select retail stores. However, everything is going to change next month, when Apple plans to start selling its smartwatch at Best Buy stores in the U.S.

Apple will sell Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport models at more than 300 Best Buy stores starting next month, reports Reuters news-agency citing the company. The company needs to improve availability of Apple Watch before the holiday season because Apple believes that its smartwatch will be desired gifts late this year.

“Customers love Apple Watch, and we are thrilled to begin offering it at Best Buy,” a spokesperson for Apple told Reuters.

apple_watch_collections_1

Select companies sell luxurious Apple Watch Edition, but Best Buy will be the first retailer to sell Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport outside of the Apple own retail chain.

“The Apple Watch is an important addition to an emerging product category, and we know our customers want it,” said Jason Bonfig, senior category officer.

So far, Apple has sold over three million of Apple Watch devices, the company indicated recently. Some analysts estimate that the company sold 3.9 – 4.0 million smartwatches in the first quarter of availability. Selling the device at Best Buy will help the company to significantly boost sales of the Apple Watch.

KitGuru Says: If Apple plans to start selling its Watch at BestBuy, it means that the company has solved the majority of problems with its manufacturing and yields.

Nintendo won't be at E3 again this year, instead it will be hosting a Super Smash Bros tournament at Best Buy stores throughout the US on the day as well as hosting a Nintendo Direct conference for all of the big announcements.

Nintendo opted to not do a big E3 presentation last year too, instead it held mini-events that would allow anyone from the public to come and try out the company's new games and systems. It looks like it must have gone down well last year as not going to E3 might be Nintendo's strategy moving forward.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghEhI4CJjAM#t=286′]

Smash Bros

The Nintendo Direct will go live at roughly 5PM GMT on Tuesday the 10th of June and will discuss “further details about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond.” Obviously those going to E3 won't completely miss out as there will be some live game demo's on the show floor hosted by Nintendo America’s ‘Treehouse’ Product Development department.

The Press release reads: “Over the last few years, Nintendo has repeatedly reinvented its approach to E3 by creating unique ways to break news and get fans at home involved in the fun, while also offering great experiences for on-site attendees. That mission continues in 2014 as Nintendo offers a series of new channels to communicate news directly to its key audiences, including fans, media, analysts, investors and business partners.”

KitGuru Says: This is a smart move from Nintendo, while Sony and Microsoft are battling for the attention of those who are actually at the show, Nintendo will be out in the public, allowing anyone to come and see what they've got to announce along with a Smash Bros tournament.

Game pre-order bonuses have become a big thing in the past few years. Since Minecraft showed the world that gamers were willing to pay for unfinished content and potential, every publisher has begun offering gamers the chance to pay for games that aren't out yet. To encourage this spending before seeing, many companies offer bonuses, like discounts on the retail price, pewter models and in-game content, but sometimes publishers and retailers go off in an entirely different direction. Take the Mario Kart 8 pre-order bonuses at Best Buy in the US. You can get free petrol if you put some money down before the release date.

mariokart
Just wait, someone will claim this is encouraging real life road karting…

Anyone pre-ordering a copy of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U at Best Buy in the next few weeks, will get a $10 coupon for petrol. While here that might not go very far, as Wii U Daily points out (in a depressingly lamenting fashion) that $10 “only” gets you a “few gallons.” Admittedly though with typical American vehicle fuel efficiency, that won't go as far as it might elsewhere.

Mario Kart 8 is currently slated for release on 30th May, with Nintendo said to be planning a specific Wii U bundle for the game and console, which should shift a few units at least.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If any game could give the Wii U a kick start, it's Mario Kart or Smash Bros, but the latter isn't coming out until later this year. Nintendo is no doubt banking a lot on those two titles.

By… not doing things at E3.

This is of course not too much of a surprise, as Nintendo did tell us it wouldn't be doing a big reveal at this year's E3 and would instead by hosting a lot of smaller events, but this one is a pretty smart one. Instead of doing much at the E3 expo at all, trying to compete with other companies on the same floor, it's going to make several of its unreleased Wii U games playable at 100 Best Buy locations around America during the show.

You don't need a ticket to play these, you don't need to be a journalist and you don't need to worry about paying for flights and accommodation, as your local Best Buy may well just have the same kind of stuff at years past you'd have had to make a special effort to get a hands on go with. Of course depending on the popularity of the stores, actually getting to play might not be too easy, but that would  be the same with the actual show anyway.

bestbuy
“See you guys at BestBuy”

As Kotaku points out, this is doubly good of Nintendo, as it lets average gamers in on the action, which is where it needs a real popularity boost. Many journalists – the kind set to visit E3 – have been giving the company glowing reviews for its products, but it's not shifting consoles. Giving people a hands on go with the system is much more likely to do that.

At E3, Nintendo is showing off the next Mario game, new Mario Kart and the newest rendition of Smash Bros, but whether these will appear in the Best Buy stores is unknown.

KitGuru Says: This is actually pretty smart. It's a consumer winner, but whether that will counter the bad press from the Youtube attack, I'm not so sure.

Founded in 1966, Best Buy enjoyed around 40 years of success. However, its decision to rapidly expand across the globe – just as the globe was beginning a nightmare financial meltdown – has left it on life support with a very poor prognosis from the financial spin doctors. KitGuru ponders where it all went wrong and what's next for the electronics giant.

If you were a business man, working in the low-margin consumer electronics market, would you attack Amazon et al by employing almost 200,000 people and setting up state-of-the-art stores across the globe?  The honest and simple answer seems to be ‘No'.

Both companies buy on a huge scale. Both enjoy huge sales. They engage in logistics, ordering products to be moved across the globe and they have customer service/support in place. All things being equal, the major difference is the number of customer-facing staff that are required to run Best Buy – as well as the mega stores that are needed for all the displays.

Stores like Asda/Walmart do very well in the electricals market, because customers are driven there to buy groceries. Send in a husband and wife team for milk and essentials and you can be sure that the bloke will lose interest, wander into the gadgets area and emerge with ‘something cool, relatively useless and totally unplanned'. Best Buy, in comparison, needs a special trip to a retail park – and people are fundamentally lazy. Why drive to a huge store and ask a disinterested 19 year old college kid for advice when you can scan KitGuru, click an advert and get your expertly-advised purchase delivered to your door.

Best Buy founder and former CEO Richard Schulze is set to be making a multi-billion dollar approach for Best Buy, in the emotional hope that it can be turned around. When announcing his intention to bid for the company's shares, Schulze said “now is the moment of truth” – indicating that if his bid is unsuccessful, then the company will disappear completely. In any event, it's unlikely that Schulze can massively increase sales in a flat market, so the solution will no doubt involve multiple store closures and a huge number of redundancies.

Best Buy was famous for cutting prices, but its share price has now been cut too much and it's bleeding to death

Carphone Warehouse boss Charles Dunstone is eagerly awaiting the outcome, because a Schulze takeover would mean Dunstone can reclaim Best Buy's share of his communications business for £500m less than he sold it.

KitGuru says: Right now, Amazon and eBay must be licking their chops in anticipation. Losing a major player like Best Buy will mean that a big chunk of loyal customer's money will now be available to the online giants. One shareholder's suicide-inducing loss is another investor's reason for rubbing their hands gleefully together. Customers have little loyalty, as long as the brand/price/service offering are right, we'll buy. Welcome to modern capitalism.

Getting an iPad2 anywhere is proving to be a challenge. In America, the Toys R Us chain have gotten involved, with the goal of helping to meet consumer demand.

Everyone headed over to Toys R Us to pick up a new shiny tablet from Apple, but sadly it didn't work out as well as many had hoped. In Los Angeles many stores had sold out of the iPad 2 by 10am after the store opened an hour earlier. Such is the demand for Apple's successor to the original iPad from last year.

You could still buy tons of accessories for the product in the store, and online, but sadly it proved to be rather pointless without the unit itself available.

Apple stores are still struggling to meet with user demand, and Apple representatives have said that generally when stores get them in stock, they sell out the same day.

Best Buy, one of the biggest chains has also had a problem keeping inventory. They said they have been taking orders, but have none in stock and aren't sure when they can fulfill the demand to their customers.

In the UK, things aren't any better

With the official Apple store still holding a 2-3 week wait time after ordering. UK KitGuru reader Sammy Harrington said ‘I ordered an iPad 2 a month ago and I still haven't received it. Apple said they are struggling to get enough units to meet the demand. I sold my iPad online to help fund for the new one, so i've been padless for weeks now.”

Best Buy in the US are showing the Motorola Xoom listed for $799, this version is 3G capable and upgradeable to 4G.

This 10.1 inch Tablet is set to target the Apple iPad and if adoption rates are as good as the smartphone Droid marketplace then it may cost Apple some sales. The Xoom comes with a dual core nVidia processor, a 1280×800 display and a dual camera setup. It will be available in America from Thursday and it has 1GB of system memory and a 32GB flash drive for storage.

When compared directly to the iPad, the Xoom is certainly technically a stronger platform, as the iPad only has a single core A4 chip, has no camera support and a lower resolution display (1024×768). The iPad can also not be upgraded to support 4G. The iPad 2 which is due for release in the near future addresses some of these issues and will come with a dual core processor and dual cameras.

The Xoom is going to be much sought after by Android followers as it will ship with V 3.0 of the Android operating system (Honeycomb). This is the first OS from Google to have been designed specifically for the tablet platform and will fully utilise the nVidia dual core Tegra processor to offer ‘PC like performance' and multitasking.

KitGuru says: Best Buy are also listing a range of accessories for the Xoom, such as cases, docks, speakers and a wireless keyboard.

The hotly awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming to Best Buy in November with a $499 price for the WiFi version and a $599 price for the WiFi/3G version. They will be offered by Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

Gadget blog Pocketables found Best Buy signs advertising the Galaxy Tab silver WiFi only variety and the WiFi + 3G versions from Verizon Wireless (in black) and Sprint (in silver).

The Wifi/3G versions will be available from Verizon and Sprint with a contract or a month to month plan.

The Galaxy Tab is a very desirable property as it runs Google's Android 2.2 operating system. It has a dual camera system for video/picture functionality and also features Adobe Flash multimedia support which the Apple iPad doesn't.

KitGuru says: Is the pricing good enough to warrant high volumes of sales? We aren't so sure.

The Apple monster continues to roll and US leading retailer Best Buy are going to start selling the ipad in ALL of the US stores from September the 26th to boost holiday sales.

hands on the iPad - you can pick one up at any Best Buy from September 26th

Chris Burritt reported the information on BloomBerg and Apple's Chief Executive officer Brian Dunn said: “Expanding iPad sales to 1,093 U.S. stores from 673 outlets reflects Best Buy’s efforts to capitalize on the growing popularity of tablet computers, Dunn said by telephone today from Richfield, Minnesota, where the company is based. ‘We see the iPad as the magnificent shining light in what will become a whole new category, and that is tablets,' Dunn said. ‘In many cases, it’s an incremental device. In some cases, it’s a substitute device for netbooks. We think that’s going to stimulate a lot of customer interest.'”

KitGuru says: How many more million shall they sell from this move? Take a guess because we have no idea!
