Bethesda planned to break away from Steam and focus on its own PC games store and launcher a few years back. However, after low sales for Fallout 76, the company shifted its strategy to release new titles on both Bethesda.net and Steam. Now that Bethesda is part of Microsoft, with a heavy focus on Steam and Xbox Game Pass for PC releases, it makes less sense to keep Bethesda.net around, so it will be shutting down next month.

Bethesda initially announced plans to close the Bethesda.net service in February, but specific dates for the move were not revealed at the time. Anyone with a Bethesda.net account will be able to migrate all of their purchases to Steam, including any games and wallet funds.

The transition begins on the 27th of April, and just two weeks later on the 11th of May, the Bethesda.net launcher will close down for good. If you miss this window, then you will still be able to migrate to Steam, but you will want to do it sooner rather than later, as the migration service won't be offered forever.

For the most part, the migration process will be automatic, moving over any wallet funds and game purchases to Steam. In most cases, your save files will also move over automatically, so you won't lose any in-game progress. For some games though, Bethesda warns that you'll need to copy your save file over to the new Steam folder manually.

While the Bethesda.net launcher is going away, Bethesda.net accounts will still be supported and some games will still ask you to sign into a Bethesda.net account. Future titles will also continue to support Bethesda.net, so while the launcher is gone, some remnants will remain.

KitGuru Says: Bethesda.net was far from the worst launcher, but it was still another unwanted download for many. Did you have any games on Bethesda.net? Will you be migrating everything over to Steam?

A few years ago, Bethesda started to pull away from Steam, and starting with Fallout 76, the company began testing not releasing games on Steam at all. That swiftly drew backlash and Bethesda ultimately chose to continue supporting Steam alongside its own launcher, but now, the Bethesda Games Launcher will be shutting down for good.

In a blog post today, Bethesda announced that “we're saying goodbye to the Bethesda.net launcher this year”. However, those that purchased games on the launcher will be able to migrate all of their titles and any currency tied to the account over to Steam starting in April.

“We’re saying goodbye to the Bethesda.net Launcher this year. We would like to thank you for your support and assure you that all of your games are safe. If you’re not playing PC games through the Bethesda.net launcher then your work is done here. Thanks for reading! If you do have games through the Bethesda.net launcher, don’t worry. Starting in early April you’ll be able to migrate your games and Wallet to your Steam account.”

While all of your games and wallet funds will move over to Steam, your Bethesda.net account will still be around. Certain titles require a Bethesda.net account in-game, so make sure you keep those details in mind for future releases. Migrations won't start for another few months, but in the meantime, Bethesda does have an FAQ available, which goes over some of the changes.

The timing of this change is interesting, as we're months away from Bethesda's next major RPG – Starfield. This also confirms that Bethesda's parent company, Microsoft, intends to continue supporting Steam moving forward, in addition to the Xbox Game Pass launcher on PC and is looking to cut out any clutter. We may be heading towards a similar situation taking place with Battle.net if Microsoft is able to complete its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

KitGuru Says: Bethesda.net didn't really take off with Fallout 76, so there hasn't been a lack of Bethesda games on Steam at all. Still, with Microsoft focused on Game Pass and Steam for PC releases, it makes sense to shut down the Bethesda launcher. Do you think we'll see the same thing happen with Battle.net if Microsoft completes its Activision Blizzard acquisition?

Denuvo has been the number one choice of DRM for major publishers for quite some time now. Occasionally though, a studio will screw up its implementation and pave the way for swift piracy despite intentions to protect at least the first week of sale. We saw this happen with Mass Effect Andromeda, which used an outdated, already cracked version of Denuvo. Then last year, Bethesda released a DRM-free version of Rage 2 on its own launcher. This time around, Bethesda released DOOM Eternal with both the Denuvo-protected .exe file in place, in addition to a DRM-free file.

Those who keep an eye on the game cracking scene swiftly learned of this news yesterday. On the Bethesda.net version of Doom Eternal, the game shipped with a folder called ‘Original', containing the non-Denuvo version of the game's .exe file. From there, it was easy for pirates to get to work and share the game on torrent sites.

Bethesda quickly patched the game last night to remove the file but of course, word had already begun to spread and the game has started circulating across piracy sites. When this happened with Rage 2 last year, Bethesda decided to remove Denuvo entirely after one week, so we could see a similar situation play out here.

Interestingly, the Denuvo version of the .exe file is 360MB, while the original is less than 70MB. Some have reported being able to play online multiplayer using the DRM-free launcher, which could have wider implications for Doom's online modes at launch.

KitGuru Says: This was more than likely a simple oversight on Bethesda's part but it really defeats the purpose of trying to use heavy DRM in the first place. My main concern is how this could open the door for cheats in multiplayer, which would be a real shame. Have many of you been playing Doom Eternal since it released yesterday?

It is no secret that Bethesda is trying to establish a foothold in the PC market with its own game launcher. Previously, most Bethesda games would launch on both Steam and Bethesda.net but that has started to change. Fallout 76 was the first game to skip Steam on PC and now it looks like Rage 2 might follow in its footsteps.

Granted, Fallout 76 wasn't the best start for Bethesda's launcher. The game had a very rocky launch, didn't review particularly well and is already being heavily discounted. Bethesda looks to be taking another swing at it in 2019 though. At the moment, Rage 2 is available for pre-order on PC at third-party retailers, all of which are selling the Bethesda.net version specifically. Beyond that, there is no Steam listing for Rage 2.

Bethesda's own website is also selling the Bethesda.net version of Rage 2, whereas other games in the publisher's catalogue list ‘Steam DRM' versions of games like Fallout 4. We've seem this song and dance before, as many other major publishers have moved from Steam to their own launchers/stores.

With that in mind, it looks like Bethesda.net might be here to stay, adding another piece of software to the long list of launchers that we need to keep track of nowadays.

KitGuru Says: I started PC gaming way back before Steam came along and changed everything, so I don't necessarily mind not having a completely unified library. With that said, I do see why plenty of other people find it annoying and would rather not bother. At this point, I would like to see more publisher's take on Ubisoft's approach, selling games via Steam and a separate launcher that opens up in the background when you load up a game.

The Fallout 76 beta is over and at this point, most players will have a good idea of whether or not they want to buy the game at launch. Unfortunately for those who have decided against keeping their pre-orders, a bug in the Bethesda.net launcher is stopping players from uninstalling the game.

Fallout 76 has had a few issues over the course of the beta, many of which were ironed out. Unfortunately, this one has creeped up after the fact. Some PC players are reporting being unable to uninstall Fallout 76 through the Fallout 76 launcher. Upon trying to uninstall the game, a message pops up telling users to log in to their Bethesda account. If you don't own Fallout 76, then a second message pops up saying “You do not have access to this game”.

Of course, you could just delete the game through the Program Files folder. Still, this is another quirky bug with Bethesda's launcher that needs to be fixed. Hopefully those who still have the game installed will be able to reclaim their hard drive space at launch on the 14th of November.

KitGuru Says: Bethesda games always come with their own unique quirks, so it shouldn't be too surprising that the launcher has a couple of problems too. Did any of you play the Fallout 76 beta? Have you run into this issue when trying to uninstall it?

Bethesda set out to bring mods to consoles with Fallout 4 and earlier this year, the console mod system launched. Unfortunately though, people have been abusing the system and re-uploading other people's creations from Nexus Mods to Bethesda Net without permission and it has caused quite a stir, to the point where Bethesda has now needed to increase security a bit.

In order to upload a mod to Bethesda Net, you need to install the Creation Kit on a PC, load up a mod, log in to Bethesda Net and upload the mod for download on the Xbox One and PS4. However, from now on, Bethesda Net accounts need to be linked with Steam accounts.

Requiring a Steam account to upload Fallout 4 mods is an extra measure to track those who re-upload mods that they did not create. This should help Bethesda act on DMCA takedown requests a bit faster when content is stolen.

KitGuru Says: Quite a few PC mod creators have had issued with people re-uploading their work to Bethesda Net without permission. Perhaps this will help fix the problem but that still remains to be seen.

Back in November, Bethesda launched Fallout 4 and while many people on the PC side have already made decent mods, we are still waiting on Bethesda to release its official tools, which are due out early this year. Fortunately, it sounds like Bethesda might be ready to talk about Fallout 4 modding pretty soon.

Bethesda is taking mods in a slightly new direction this time around with Bethesda.net, which will serve as a hub for mods that can be played on both PC and console. When asked by a fan about when to expect an announcement regarding mods, the Fallout Twitter account admitted that an announcement would be coming soon.

2015-11-09_00018-e14471509378421

Unfortunately, there's not much more information than that but it does mean that Bethesda is still on track for its plans for modding tools. It is also worth noting that while Bethesda.net will be a core part of the studio's plan, modders will still be able to upload their creations for PC users wherever they want, like Nexus. Consoles will be limited to Bethesda's platform though.

KitGuru Says: I finally got back around to playing Fallout 4 over the weekend following my PC port review back in November and while the game is good, I am pretty excited to see just what modders come up with when the official tools are available.

Earlier this week at E3, Bethesda's Todd Howard appeared on Microsoft's stage to announce that PC mods for Fallout 4 would be playable on the Xbox One. At the time it seemed like the PS4 has been completely cut out of the equation but it seems that is not the case as Sony's console will have access to the Fallout 4 mod library eventually.

Now when mods for Fallout 4 on Xbox was first announced, there seemed to be some confusion and while this isn't totally confirmed, here is how the system will probably work: At its own E3 conference, Bethesda announced its new platform, Bethesda.Net, which will be a place for modders to share their own content with other users and platforms. It is likely that the two consoles will be able to support mods found on Bethesda.Net and creations uploaded to it will be checked for compatibility.

Fallout-4-Boston-Skyline

Obviously both consoles come with their limitations so there will be mods that neither can run. Right now we don't know whether or not Bethesda.Net will be accepting more in-depth mods but even if there are restrictions in place for Bethesda's own site, PC gamers will still have the Steam Workshop and the Nexus to turn to.

The new Doom title will also use Bethesda.Net for modded maps/levels, which will also be shared across the PC and consoles.

KitGuru Says: So there you have it, Bethesda is trying to turn mods cross-platform, which is a good thing as it may attract more to the modding scene. However, this doesn't mean we'll stop seeing more comprehensive mods on the PC, after all, we still have the Nexus and Steam Workshop.
