Microsoft's Bing search engine is going to become the default client on Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices, according to Microsoft CEO Steve ‘Im a bit crazy' Ballmer.

The Microsoft CEO told people at the event yesterday that Bing and Bing Maps are going to be ‘integrated at the OS level' on BlackBerry handsets to be released later this year.

People at the event were shown a video highlighting how bing would work. The video is shown below.

The move is clearly to help Microsoft get promotion and market share with Google dominating the figures, and RIM are losing market share to Apple's iPhone and the plethora of smartphones using Google's Android OS.

Microsoft have also set a deal in place with Nokia to develop handsets for the Windows Phone 7 mobile OS in another step to mount a challenge against Google and Apple.

KitGuru says: Is this a wise move, or will it alienate people who actually would prefer Google search on their phones?

Outspoken Google CEO Eric Schmidt has dismissed the potential threat from social networking giant Facebook and has instead pointed to Bing as being Google's main competitor.

Schmidt has said that Bing is ‘doing well' and is owned by a company who has more cash and resources than Google and has a ‘storied reputation of technology innovation.”

Google CEO Eric Schmidt

Bing haven't yet taken a huge percentage of the search market and only hold around 11% of U.S. search queries according to independent company ComScore. Google are holding steady at 65% which is a serious market percentage in any business.

Schmidt also said that FaceBook and Google coexist well in the market place and he said “We studied very carefully the impact with Facebook and Facebook users use Google more, so we love Facebook for that reason.”

Schmidt also said that Google has extended their agreement with Apple and said that both companies would work closely in the future. This is a very key point for him to make as Apple are under threat in the mobile sector from Google's Android operating system.

KitGuru says: Google still dominate the search engine market place, does anyone use Bing and prefer it? Tell us why you do.

Microsoft are ramping up their attack on Google to try and persuade people that their search engine is a strong and viable alternative.

Yesterday they released a wealth of new features which aim to turn Bing into more than just a simple search engine. Bing has been enhanced to offer viewers ways to watch TV shows, listen to music and play games – all in the confines of Bing's pages.

Rob Enderel, analyst at Enderele group said : “This has become a full-on war. I'm not too sure it can get any hotter, Microsoft is trying to make Bing ever more capable. The goal is to get you to live within their search engine and not go to any other sites, certainly not Google. The more you can do with Bing, the less likely you are to wander someplace else like Google. It's textbook customer containment.”

While many will think adding entertainment options seems somewhat frivolous, market research has shown that many users enjoy short diversions into other areas without the trouble of searching for video and game content. Microsoft's move might actually be a stroke of genius.

To this point Microsoft are struggling to gain marketshare, with Google still holding 71% of all US searches during April of this year. Bing statistics slipped by a few percent and they are still in third position behind Yahoo and Google.

Sadly, while alteratives are healthy for any market, we get the feeling that Google is just too engraved into public conciousness for many people to even consider a change.
