Black Mesa, the fan-made remake of Half-Life 1, launched to great reception earlier this year after an extensive period in Early Access. The folks at The Crowbar Collective aren’t done improving the game yet though. A few weeks ago, the studio announced a free ‘Definitive Edition' update and now, it appears to be almost finished.

The Definitive Edition update for Black Mesa promises to be “the best, most polished and fun version of the game yet”. This will include new models, textures, lighting and even some tweaked level design in some areas to bring them up to the new standard set with the Xen Chapters update – a primary selling point for Black Mesa.

Aside from all of that, some new balancing changes will also be implemented, including the re-positioning of enemies and fresh health/ammo in some levels.

Black Mesa: Definitive Edition is out now, acting as the final major update for the game after 16 years in development. As usual, there is an extensive list of patch notes that you can read through to get the full gist of changes.

KitGuru Says: Black Mesa has clearly been a labour of love for the Crowbar Collective. Have any of you tried the new Definitive Edition update?

This week, the studio announced a Definitive Edition update for Black Mesa, which promises to be “the best, most polished and fun version of the game yet”.

As you can see in the screenshots above, this update will revisit certain parts of the game and introduce further graphical enhancements. We can already see more detailed textures and better lighting.

Black Mesa: Definitive Edition won't be a re-release or a paid update, it will instead just roll out as a patch for the current game once it is ready. You can take an early look at the Definitive Edition update by opting into the beta version of Black Mesa on Steam.

KitGuru Says: Black Mesa has clearly been a labour of love for the Crowbar Collective. Have any of you tried the new Definitive Edition beta update? Will you be returning to the game once it rolls out in full?

Just a few weeks ago, the Crowbar Collective released a preview of the upcoming 1.0 update for Black Mesa. The release version promises improved graphics, difficulty tweaks, AI improvements and plenty of bug fixes. Now, after a lengthy development period, Black Mesa will officially be leaving Early Access next week.

Black Mesa has been on our radar for a long time now. This initially started off as a free mod but the team behind the Half-Life remake set more ambitious plans in motion, including the addition of ‘the Xen chapters'. Since the Summer of last year, development has ramped up considerably, with all content now included and the last several months focusing on polish.

“Through luck, hard work, and maybe a bit of ignorance we didn’t shy away from our goal of bringing this game to completion”, Crowbar Collective head, Adam Engles said. “We are proud of what we built. We think this upcoming 1.0 release is the best, most polished, and most fun version of the game yet.”

Black Mesa is set to leave Early Access on March 5th, just ahead of Valve's own Half-Life: Alyx, which arrives on March 23rd.

KitGuru Says: I've owned Black Mesa since it first appeared in Early Access and the game really has come a long way. Are any of you planning on playing this once version 1.0 arrives next week?

We still have a couple of months to go before Half-Life: Alyx comes out, so now is as good a time as any to revisit the older adventures of Gordon Freeman. To celebrate the Lunar New Year, the Crowbar Collective has detailed Black Mesa 1.0 and its upcoming changes, adding additional polish for the full release after launching the ‘complete beta' in December.

At this point, Black Mesa is entirely playable from beginning to end with no missing content. However, the game is still in early access while the final changes for 1.0 are tested via the beta branch on Steam. In version 1.0, you can expect a complete AI overhaul, with smarter, more communicative enemy soldiers. The in-game art has also been evaluated, so some sections of Earth and Xen levels will look notably improved in an effort to bring Half-Life 1 up to modern graphical standards.

These updates should be pushed to the Black Mesa beta branch fairly soon, with a 1.0 release coming in very shortly after. The work doesn't end with this release version though, as the developers have also mentioned version 1.5, which they jokingly refer to as ‘Black Mesa: Definitive Edition'.

With this future update, which will arrive well after launch, the studio will be combing through the game once again to identify rough spots, polish up the graphics in a few more areas and improve Steam Workshop support for community mods.

More details are due to come in the next few weeks, so expect another important update very soon.

KitGuru Says: I've had Black Mesa on Steam since it first launched on Early Access, so I'm looking forward to finally checking out the release version. Have any of you been playing this recently? Are there any areas of the game you would like to see improved?

This has been an exciting year for Half-Life fans, not just because of Valve’s return to the series with Half-Life: Alyx, but also thanks to Black Mesa, which officially began wrapping up content development over the summer. The full version of Black Mesa’s ‘Xen Chapters’ went into public beta just two weeks ago and now, the full, polished version is rolling out to all owners, not just those who have opted in to the beta.

In an announcement today, the Crowbar Collective revealed that the “polished and tested version of all Black Mesa” is now rolling out on Steam ‘mainline’, meaning you don’t have to opt-in to the Public Beta build to play all of the content. As the developers put it, “if you have been holding out for Xen, this is what you have been waiting for”.

With this update, the full version of Black Mesa is now available outside of the beta channel. This update also implements feedback to improve the game’s difficulty, increase player guidance, fix bugs and increase performance in some areas that were proving troublesome before.

Black Mesa is still technically in Early Access and this latest build is listed as version 0.9. Over the next little while, the developers will continue collecting feedback and squashing any remaining bugs. By the time the 1.0 ‘release’ version rolls around, the Crowbar Collective hopes to implement the groundwork for a future multiplayer mode, make any necessary improvements to alien AI, implement Steam Workshop support and add in additional refinements and fixes throughout the entire game.

You can read the full update and see the development roadmap on Black Mesa’s latest Steam Community Update, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Black Mesa is wrapping up content development at the perfect time, leaving a nice window to get through Gordon’s original 15-hour journey ahead of Half-Life: Alyx, which takes place between Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Are many of you planning on jumping back into Black Mesa now that it is content complete, or will you be waiting for the 1.0 release in the near future?

This has been an exciting year for Half-Life fans, not just because of Valve's return to the series with Half-Life: Alyx, but also thanks to Black Mesa, which officially began wrapping up content development over the summer. Black Mesa is a remake of Half-Life 1 with an extended section focusing on Xen. Beta testing has been going on for a few months and now, the ‘complete beta' is live, with the full release just around the corner.

As announced by the Crowbar Collective over the weekend, the Black Mesa Complete Beta is now live on the public beta channel on Steam. All you need to do is opt-in to the beta within Steam and you will be able to play the complete remake from start to finish for the first time with no content missing.

The key thing with the complete beta is the addition of Interloper C, Interloper C1, Interloper D, the Nihilath boss battle and Endgame. Aside from new content, a bunch of new fixes have also been added to the game, so things like Shotgun misfire, graphical bugs and other issues are now fixed.

There are still some known issues with the game. Currently, the developers are concerned that some portions may be too difficult or too easy, so they are monitoring feedback on that prior to the full 1.0 release in 2020. Performance across the game has also improved with recent updates but there are still certain areas that may need further optimisation to bring frame rates up. Finally, while the team doesn't expect any progression blocking bugs, players may find creative ways to break the factory maps, so there is still some more work to be done based on player feedback.

KitGuru Says: With Half-Life: Alyx on the way, now seems like the perfect time to jump back into Black Mesa and the other Half-Life games. Are any of you planning on jumping back into Black Mesa now that it is content-complete? Or will you be holding off for the final release in a few months time?

Back in June we learned that Black Mesa, a remake of Half-Life 1, was going to be getting a public beta for the Xen section of the game very soon. A limited beta has been available for a few weeks now but today, the full Xen Chapters have been pushed out into public beta, giving access to the complete version of Black Mesa.

The first technical beta contained the first three maps of the Xen chapter, continuing the story from the cliffhanger ending at the Lambda Core. The full Xen campaign is now available in public beta, complete with all nine maps. After this beta, additional content will be added, including Interloper, Ninilanth and Endgame, which will bring the total map count up to 18.

As the Crowbar Collective points out, there are some known issues with the current public beta. Old save files will cause problems, there are some lighting bugs and a few other issues that still need to be worked out. This is a beta after all, so if you are up to the task, be sure to provide feedback on any issues you come across.

The Xen chapters should exit beta and be implemented into the release version of Black Mesa in a few months time.

KitGuru Says: While there were some delays and setbacks, it looks like Black Mesa is now in the final stretch leading up to its full release. Are any of you planning on trying out the Xen beta?

Earlier this week we learned that Black Mesa, a remake of Half-Life 1, was going to be getting a public beta for the Xen section of the game very soon. That time arrived even sooner than we could have hoped as the Black Mesa Xen beta went live last night alongside the Steam Summer Sale.

The technical beta contains the first three maps of the Xen chapter, continuing the story from the cliffhanger ending at the Lambda Core. The full Xen campaign will feature 19 maps, so this beta is just a small section of what we'll be getting in the final game.

As the Crowbar Collective points out, this beta is designed to “collect bugs and feedback on a range of different computers”. The developers have made improvements and significant changes to the Source engine for this remake, so they want to get everything running as smoothly as possible before rolling out the full Xen section.

You can opt in to the beta through Steam. If you would rather wait for the full experience, then the developers say it won't be that long of a wait. In the meantime, Black Mesa is part of the Steam Summer Sale, so if you are interested in playing a fully re-made version of Half-Life 1, then you can grab it for £5.99.

The Crowbar Collective has been working on Black Mesa for years now. Originally a free mod, the Half-Life 1 remake has now been available on Steam for quite some time, although it has remained in an early access state. Now, we are closer than ever to a full launch, with the Xen chapters finally set to be released.

Most of Black Mesa has been available for a while now but ‘Project Xen', a restoration of the Xen sections of the game, has been kept out. There have been several delays to the Xen chapters but a beta is due for “imminent public release” according to IGN's preview.

Once the beta is out, the Black Mesa team can work out any final bugs and bring the game out of early access, possibly before the end of 2019. At that point, you will be able to play the entirety of Half-Life 1 in remastered/remade form.

Black Mesa first launched into Steam early access back in 2015. The Xen chapters were initially due out in 2017 but were pushed back a couple of times while the team continued additional work.

KitGuru Says: I've been looking forward to Black Mesa's full release for a long time now. It has been a long journey but it looks like we are finally near the end of it. Have any of you picked up Black Mesa while it is in early access? Are you looking forward to the Xen chapters finally dropping?

Crowbar Collective has been working away on its Half-Life 1 remake, Black Mesa, for quite some time. However, the game has been missing its finishing touch for years- the Xen chapters. Originally, the Black Mesa developers wanted to get Xen out this Summer but unfortunately, there has been one last delay.

Originally released in 2012 as a free mod, Black Mesa gained a lot of popularity. Developers Crowbar Creative brought a standalone version to Steam Greenlight shortly afterwards, with it taking years before it made its way into the hands of fans. The Xen chapters has been promised for almost as long as Black Mesa has existed but unfortunately won’t be available until December. The delay might be disappointing for some, but will be the “do-or-die deadline” according to Crowbar meaning that it will arrive in time for the holiday period or not at all.

The delay is an attempt to not just remake the final act of the game but to rethink it. Originally, that portion of Half-Life was met with mixed feelings and rather than allowing fans to relive potential disappointment, Crowbar are trying to do justice to the renowned title. The team is still hard at work to meet the December deadline with the most recent patch notes showing a recolour to better unify the chapter with the rest of the game.

KitGuru Says: It does seem like an awful lot of change to something that is so fondly remembered, but if it is anything like the Black Mesa fans have come to love then Xen is in safe hands. Are you looking forward Gordon Freeman bouncing around on the coral-filled alien planet once again?

Last week, the Black Mesa website was updated with a strange countdown timer. The timer finally hit zero today, revealing a trailer and a link to the official Steam store page for Black Mesa, a fan-made Half-Life 1 recreation project that has been in the making for many years now.

Now there is a downside- the game is not complete yet. Black Mesa has launched on Steam Early Access, with the Xen section of Half-Life still missing from the game. According to the dev team, around 85 percent of the single player campaign is finished and now, with the help of early access buyers, it wants to finish up the remaining 15 percent of the game.

ss_34be0eb4fc3a8ff8daacc140ac3fea59a78e1012.1920x1080

The game is a little pricey, coming in at £14.99, which will increase to £19.99 when the game is finished. There is no estimated finish date at this time either. So how will the final version of Black Mesa differ from the Early Access build?

The developer explained on the store page that the final version will feature “the conclusion of the single player campaign, with the addition of the Xen chapters”. Final polish will be added to the earth based chapters of the campaign and more multiplayer maps and modes are planned.

The game already has Workshop support so custom maps will already be available for the multiplayer component right from the start. The game is using Valve's updated Source engine, rather than Source 2. You can buy Black Mesa, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Considering that Black Mesa has been in the works since before 2012, I was a little disappointed at first to see it launching on Early Access like so many other games these days. However, if the team needs the money to finally finish up development, then Early Access does seem like the best option.

If you have done any research in to Source mods over the last few years, then you will have likely come across Black Mesa. The fan-made project aims to recreate Half-Life 1, it started off as a free but unfinished modification, however, eventually Valve gave the game clearance to sell on Steam.

Valve backed the project a couple of years ago now and between then and now, we have actually heard very little about when the final version will release on Steam. However, the Black Mesa website was updated last night, revealing a new countdown timer, which will hit zero on the 5th of May at 2:47 PM GMT/ 7:47 AM Pacific Time.

2858278-blackmesa--

We don't know what we will be greeted with at the end of this but it seems likely that we might finally see a reveal of the project and hopefully a final release date. Black Mesa is aiming to breathe new life in to the original Half-Life game, with updated assets, models and graphics, a new soundtrack, new voice acting and a multiplayer mode.

If you don't necessarily want to wait around for the finished, paid version of the mod to launch, then you can still find the free Black Mesa mod over on ModDB.

Mods are one of the best selling points of PC gaming. Not only can they add elements to gameplay that weren't there before, but they can improve the graphics and fix problems that the original developers never saw coming; or in the case of Black Mesa, it can completely remake its source material from scratch. Lauded by fans of the series, the Black Mesa mod showed us what years of dedication can do but now the developers are set to be rewarded far more than with just fan adoration. Valve has given permission for it to go on sale on Steam.

Of course we knew the mod was going up on Steam at some point, since it was one of the first games to be given the green light, by Valve's Greenlight procedure, but the fact that you'll be able to pay for it – that makes it sound like a treat for us too – is all new.

Discussing the move in a Steam community update, the developers said: “Black Mesa has been given the opportunity to be sold as a retail product on Steam! This is an incredible honour – one we never expected – but also one we found hard to accept.”

They then go on to say that nobody made the mod with money in mind but there are some benefits to it. On top of improving their individual financial situations, it will also mean they can afford to spend the time on making the mod even better with the full version of the Source engine.

“Soon you'll see Black Mesa available on Steam for a relatively low price. But we aren't dropping all support for the free version. In fact shortly after the Steam release there will be a completely new free version of the game. We also plan to open source our maps and some game assets to the modding community,” continues the post.

Buying the commercial Black Mesa version will give you access to a few features that the free version doesn't have, though the team hasn't announced what those will be yet, describing it as more of a way of supporting the devs than getting yourself much in the way of extra content.

In a tack-on update at the end, the team also lets us in on the progress of Xen, the final chapter from the original Half Life that's currently missing from the mod. It's in thee works, but is still not that close to completion.

KitGuru Says: This is pretty cool news and makes sense for everyone. The developers can now make a little money to help give them more time to work the mod going forward and Valve gets a little taste from its Steam sales cut. Not bad considering its original game is 15 years old now.

Fans of the Half Life Universe are in for a treat, as a new short film was launched yesterday on Youtube, showing some of the early stages of Black Mesa's fallout. Scientist and all-round crowbar swinging badass, Gordon Freeman makes an appearance near the start, taking on the role of narrator – that's right, Mr Freeman speaks.

The video's description has a little bit of background information on its filming:

Finally see Gordon Freeman in the flesh in this cinematic horror
short based on the video game Half-Life. Yes there will be headcrabs…

Shot by fans over two nights in a cottage in the middle of Hollywood
for about $3000.

It all started with the comment “Hey you would make a great live action
Gordon Freeman, let's make a fan film”. A year later we finally
got around to it.

Considering the low budget, this is incredibly well done, with a dark, brooding atmosphere and some great special effects.

KitGuru Says: I won't spoil any of it by describing what happens. Just watch it and afterwards, tell us if you'd like to see this as a full length feature? Do you think it's sacrilegious to have Mr Freeman speak?
