The Razer BlackWidow returns in 2023 with the launch of the new BlackWidow V4 Pro. Aside from upgraded RGB lighting that extends to the wrist rest, the keyboard also packs a number of useful features, including a highly configurable ‘Command Dial'.

The BlackWidow V4 Pro ships with either Razer Green Clicky switches or Razer Yellow Silent switches, so you can choose between tactile feedback or quiet operation. As you would expect, the keyboard is decked out with Razer Chroma RGB LEDs, providing underglow lighting under each key and even around the magnetic wrist rest.

The Command Dial is a big part of what this keyboard has to offer on the functionality front. The dial is preset with 8 modes, allowing for window zooming, tab switching and other shortcuts. However, you can customise it further with up to 100 Custom Modes, which can be mapped to counter-clockwise or clockwise turns of the dial. You also get a set of macro-keys along the side of the keyboard that can of course be programmed to whatever shortcuts you want.

Some other notable features include USB 2.0 passthrough, detachable Type C connections, dual-angle kickstands, and up to 8000Hz polling rate. Lastly, the keyboard includes 2 layers of sound-dampening foam internally and factory-lubricated stabilizers for improved typing acoustics.

The Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro launches today, priced at £229.99.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see how this keyboard holds up in reviews. On paper, it sounds like a great keyboard but it also carries a high price tag.

Razer, a leading maker of PC peripherals designed for gamers, has introduced its new BlackWidow-series keyboards that use the all-new mechanical switches which were designed specifically for gamers.

Keyboards with mechanical switches have a number of advantages over mainstream keyboards that use dome switches or buckling spring switches since they provide tactile feedback and emit click noise when pressed. However, the majority of mechanical switches were designed for typing, not gaming, in mind. As a result, it takes more time to press and “unpress” them than many gamers would desire. In a bid to improve keyboards with mechanical switches and make them more comfortable for gamers and those who type fastly, Razer decided to design a switch for gaming keyboards from the ground up.

The all-new Razer mechanical switches have an optimized set of actuation and reset points that improve gaming performance. The new switches reduce actuation point of a key to about 1.9mm (down from typical 2.2mm) and shrink the distance between the actuation and reset point to around 0.4mm (from 0.7mm). The Razer mechanical switch is designed to actuate at a short into the keystroke, and reset itself to fire again at less than half the distance of standard mechanical switches. This allows for blazing fast actuations without having the need to bottom down into the keystroke each time.

The actuation force remained at around 50 grams for the “green: switch that “clicks” as well as 45 grams for the silent “orange” switches.

The Razer mechanical switches are manufactured by a third-party manufacturer (presumably, by Cherry) and are available for volume purchases by other makers of gaming hardware.

The new switches are used in various new BlackWidow keyboards, including BlackWidow Ultimate, BlackWidow and BlackWidow Tournament.

KitGuru Says: Razer typically knows what exactly it does, so when it says that the new switches enable faster response, it does not lie. What will be interesting to see is whether the new switches enable higher comfort and accuracy when typing than traditional Cherry MX ones…

If you are in the market for a new keyboard then there are literally thousands available today which use membrane technology – but this won't be the first choice for the discerning enthusiast user as they can often feel ‘spongy' when typing.  Where we really see a step up in performance is when manufacturers integrate mechanical switches into them.

Adding a quality mechanical switch design can often double or triple the price of a product, so not many manufacturers are willing to release models with this technology.  One of the only gaming keyboards around for the last few years that used mechanical switches was the SteelSeries 7G that we reviewed last year.  This was a very impressive product but commanded a price of around £100, limiting the audience.

Until now, Razer haven't had any mechanical keyboards in their lineup, however, with the release of the affordable Black Widow and Black Widow Ultimate, they are clearly trying to bring this technology to the mass market.  Today we are going to look at the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, which boasts an impressive feature set which should really enhance the overall experience.
