Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 was supposed to release a few years ago at this point but due to development issues, the project had to shift studios and be rebooted. Paradox Interactive hadn't confirmed the new studio working on the game over the last couple of years but that has finally changed. UK studio, The Chinese Room, has taken the reigns on the project and is gearing up for a 2024 launch.

In a new video shared at PAX West over the weekend, Paradox Interactive revealed The Chinese Room as the new developer behind Bloodlines 2. The game is said to be the team's most ambitious project to date, with the studio's director, Ed Daly, adding that the goal is to create a sequel that “honours the legacy of its predecessor while bringing its gameplay to the modern era”.

The studio reveal was accompanied by a new trailer for the game, which you can see above. Previously, The Chinese Room was best known for games like Dear Esther, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Amnesia: Machine for Pigs.

Paradox's Sean Greaney said that they were “immediately impressed” by the studio's proposal for the game, which ultimately won them control of the project. There is a gameplay reveal planned for January 2024 and the game should release later next year.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully this new version of Bloodlines 2 sticks and the game actually comes out. There have been many delays along the way but if there is a good game at the end of the tunnel, then all of the previous issues will quickly be forgotten.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has had a turbulent development cycle but the game seems to finally be back on track, as Paradox has finally posted a long-awaited development update.

In the latest update, Paradox confirms the game is still in development, adding that there are plans to make more announcements in September this year – perhaps we'll finally see the game in action after all this time. For a quick look at some in-game environments, Paradox did share five new screenshots from the game:

Many people pre-ordered Bloodlines 2 back when it was first announced, prior to its many delays. As development has continued, the team's plans for certain pre-order bonuses have changed. Due to the amount of time that has passed, and changes to pre-order incentives, Paradox is offering refunds to anyone who has already purchased the game digitally. Paradox will also proactively refund all purchases of physical products, including the game's originally planned Collector's Edition.

The next Bloodlines 2 announcements will be coming in September.

KitGuru Says: The screenshots mentioned are listed as ‘post alpha' screenshots, which indicates the game is heading towards the next milestone in its development. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that this means a 2024 release date.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 was supposed to release a long time ago, but development issues led to repeated delays for the game. At this point, the project is being worked on by a new team, and while we still don't have a new release date, Paradox Interactive thinks a 2023 launch is quite possible.

In an interview with Privata Affärer, Paradox CEO, Fredrik Wester, said that the team will “probably be able to set a launch date” for Bloodlines 2 soon. Wester also went on to say that a 2023 release is “absolutely not impossible”, which is far from a confirmation, but it is perhaps the most positive update we've had on this game's development for quite some time.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 was first announced at GDC in 2019, with Hardsuit Labs developing and aiming for a 2020 release date. By late 2020, creative leads on the project had left and the game needed to be delayed. In 2021, Paradox stepped in and delayed the game indefinitely and put it in the hands of a new development studio, leading to further layoffs at Hardsuit Labs.

When Hardsuit Labs was taken off of the project, Paradox came close to cancelling the game entirely, but ultimately, the publisher chose to put the project in the hands of a fresh team. Given Wester's recent comments, we can expect a more official development update on the game sometime in the coming months.

KitGuru Says: Given that this game was rebooted in 2021, I would be surprised if it did release in 2023. Still, crazier things have happened, so we'll just have to wait and see what the next proper update holds.

After multiple delays and staff turnover, Paradox made the decision to boot Hardsuit Labs off of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 and switched to a new development studio to continue working on the game. At this point, the game is delayed indefinitely, but at one point, it was almost scrapped entirely.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 was first announced at GDC in 2019, with Hardsuit Labs developing and aiming for a 2020 release date. By late 2020, creative leads on the project had left and the game needed to be delayed. Earlier this year, Paradox stepped in and delayed the game indefinitely and put it in the hands of a new development studio, leading to further layoffs at Hardsuit Labs.

While eventually the decision was made to carry the game on, the publisher did consider scrapping it entirely and was prepared to do so. Speaking with Swedish outlet, Avanza (via Gamesradar), Paradox CEO, Fredrik Wester, explained: “When we lifted the game from the original developer, we had a long discussion about whether to end the game or push it forward. At the time we were actually prepared to shut down production altogether.”

However, after seeing some pitches from developers, one of them was deemed “convincing enough to push forward”. Unfortunately, Paradox has not yet confirmed which studio is now handling the project, but we can likely expect Bloodlines 2 to stay out of the spotlight for another year or so while the new team reworks the game.

KitGuru Says: Bloodlines 2 was highly anticipated, but it was clear that there were some major development issues going on over the course of 2020. Hopefully this new mystery studio can deliver the game that was originally promised.

Just last week, Paradox announced that it was pulling Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 from developer Hardsuit Labs. Instead, the game will be handed over to a new studio to continue development. Having a major project like this pulled is usually bad news for any studio and in the case of Hardsuit Labs, it is resulting in a round of job cuts.

As reported by Eurogamer, one former staff member suggested that the studio's entire narrative team had been let go. However, ‘many others' were also affected, so these job cuts are spread across multiple teams within Hardsuit Labs.

Hardsuit Labs has not publicly acknowledged these changes yet. In fact, the studio has said very little publicly since being pulled off of Bloodlines 2, a game it had been working on for several years.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 did seem to be going through development troubles, as key team members left the project over the years and the game faced multiple delays. We don't know who will be taking over development of the game from here, but it will no longer be coming out in 2021 and pre-orders are being cancelled.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully the developers impacted find new roles elsewhere. We'll update if Hardsuit Labs provides a statement.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has been going through development struggles for a while now. The game has already been delayed a couple of times and late last year, the project lost its lead writer and creative director. Now, the game is officially moving studios, with Hardsuit Labs no longer involved with the game.

Paradox Interactive, the publisher behind Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, announced that Hardsuit Labs would no longer be leading development on the game. Beyond that, the game is also no longer targeting a 2021 release date.

The information comes from Paradox's end of year report. You can see the full quote below:

“We have now chosen to postpone the release of the game further, and we will not be launching the game in 2021. We have also decided that Hardsuit Labs will no longer be leading the development of Bloodlines 2, and we have started a collaboration with a new studio partner to finish work on the game. This has been a difficult decision, but we are convinced that it is the right way forward to do the game justice.”

Aside from that, the Bloodlines 2 Twitter account also posted an update this week, simply confirming the news from the end of year report, while also saying that the game has not been cancelled and is still in development.

KitGuru Says: Given all of the changes going on behind the scenes, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't get an update on Bloodlines 2 for quite some time. Hopefully the new developers can wrap up work on the game in the next few years.

Recently it was announced that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 would no longer be coming out in 2020 and that the team was now focusing on meeting a 2021 release window. Amid all of this, it would seem that the game's lead narrative designer and creative director have been let go, a move that has been described as “a shock”.

Hardsuit Labs, the studio developing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, previously had Brian Mitsoda in charge of narrative design and Ka'ai Cluney as Creative Director. In a statement, the studio and publisher Paradox Interactive have confirmed that neither are involved in the project now, but claim to “appreciate and value the contributions” that both have made to the game up to this point.

Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun, Mitsoda says that his firing came as a shock and adds that he had never been led to believe that he wasn't fulfilling his role: “That this came as a shock to me is underselling it. I’ve worked on Bloodlines 2 for almost five years. The story and main cast was initially conceived in my living room. I helped develop the pitch for Hardsuit Labs and helped pitch the project to Paradox in Las Vegas. I’ve been in charge of the narrative since the beginning, working long days and sometimes weekends to deliver a successor to Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and I’ve never been led to believe that I hadn’t succeeded.”

Mitsoda also says he was not part of recent discussions to delay the game and adds that he is “incredibly disappointing and frustrated” to no longer be working on the project. So far, we have not heard from Cluney, former Creative Director on the project. At this point, Hardsuit Labs aims to release Bloodlines 2 in 2021, despite needing to replace two high profile positions on the project.

KitGuru Says: There appears to be some behind-the-scenes drama going on here, which usually isn't good news for such a lengthy project. Perhaps at some point we'll get the full story here, in the meantime, fans will have to continue hoping that the final game meets expectations.

Paradox Interactive opened up GDC 2019 with the huge announcement of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, a long awaited sequel to the cult classic RPG. Since that announcement, the game has had a tentative 2020 release window, but that is changing today, with Bloodlines 2 joining the growing list of titles facing delays due to COVID-19.

As part of Paradox Interactive's quarterly investors call this week, the publisher confirmed that Bloodlines 2 will be pushed back to 2021.

As the quote says, the delay is due to “quality bar and ambitions” in place for the developers. Beyond this announcement, more information will be coming in the next few months to further narrow down the new 2021 launch window and “other organisational changes”.

Bloodlines 2 is not the only game to be impacted. As part of the Paradox Interactive earnings call, the publisher also told investors that some unannounced games have also had internal delays due to the global pandemic.

KitGuru Says: While it is a shame to see such a promising looking game delayed, this seems like the right move. Rushing the next few months of development just to get the game out in 2020 would likely end badly.

Yesterday, Epic Games took a break from throwing cash directly at publishers in order to drum up some goodwill with PC gamers with a ‘mega sale’. As part of the sale, Epic Games put up a blanket £10 discount on all games on the store that cost £14 or more, including pre-orders for upcoming titles. It looks like Paradox wasn’t too pleased about Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines 2 being included in this, so the game has been pulled from purchase during the sale.

Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines 2 was announced quite recently, with a release date set for early 2020. The game was available for pre-order via the Epic Games Store at full price, but the recent Mega Sale brought the game down to £40 almost a year before the game will be coming out. Epic Games is footing the bill for the standard £10 discount, so Paradox would not have lost money, but nevertheless, the publisher has decided to not participate in the promotion.

Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines 2 will be available to pre-order on the Epic Games store again once the sale has ended. In addition, Epic will be honouring the discount for anyone who pre-ordered the game before it was removed from the sale.

In addition to Vampire jumping off the sale, the discount has also been removed from pre-orders of Borderlands 3, and the indie title ‘Oxygen Not Included’.

KitGuru Says: What Epic Games tried to do here was a good idea, but publishers are wary about perceived value, which would have been diminished for some larger games if it could have been bought cheaper months ahead of launch. As a result, the sale has been downgraded slightly compared to just 24 hours ago.

Over the years, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines has become a cult classic. The game didn't fare particularly well at launch after going up against Half-Life 2 but nowadays, the game sits with very positive reviews on Steam and decent sales numbers. Now, the series is being given another chance at success, with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 was announced today at GDC 2019 by Paradox Interactive. The game is being developed by Hardsuit Labs and famed videogame writer, Chris Avellone, has been working on the project.

At the moment, Bloodlines 2 is due to come out in 2020 on both PC and consoles. The game has been secretly in development since 2015, so a lot of work has already gone into the project.

Nvidia has also revealed that Bloodlines 2 will ship with support for both raytracing and DLSS. We have updated our list of RTX supported games to show this.

KitGuru Says: While I didn't play Bloodlines 1 myself, I have heard plenty of good things about it. It will be interesting to see how the sequel holds up all these years later.
