It is not uncommon for popular video game franchises to receive their own board games. We have seen this with the likes of Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Horizon Zero Dawn to name but a few. The latest title to get its own board game is The Last of Us – the Kickstarter of which is set to go live early next week.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Naughty Dog account said “We’re excited to announce The Last of Us: Escape the Dark, a new board game experience set within The Last of Us universe, created by our friends @Themeborne! The Kickstarter goes live Nov 8, so stay tuned for more soon.”

Offering more details on their blog, the team added “As tabletop gaming fans may already know, Themeborne’s Escape the Dark series values cooperative and easy-to-understand gameplay. Themeborne’s games include some seriously beautiful black-and-white illustrated chapter cards that players work to resolve together, overcoming challenges and creating new paths each time they play so no two games are quite alike.”

Ahead of the game’s full Kickstarter launch on the 8th of November, the team concluded by saying “With Themeborne’s penchant for bold art and approachable game design going into the development of The Last of Us: Escape the Dark, we can’t wait to see how they realize the world of The Last of Us in a brand-new way.”

Many of FromSoftware’s previous titles have been translated into board game formats, with the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne both getting their own board games. As such, it is unsurprising to hear that Elden Ring – by far FromSoftware’s most successful game to date – will also be getting its own board game.

Announced via Kickstarter, few details regarding this Elden Ring board game have been announced, aside from the fact that the game is being created in partnership with Steamforged Games – a common collaborator with video game developers – having been responsible for the likes of Dark Souls – The Board Game; Resident Evil – The Board Game; Horizon Zero Dawn – The Board Game and Monster Hunter World: The Board Game.

As mentioned, we currently know very little about the Elden Ring board game, however early reactions from fans have been somewhat skeptical due to the inconsistent nature of Steamforged Games’ portfolio.

Still, the idea of an Elden Ring board game is tantalising and so hopefully the team at Steamforged Games do not fall into previous failings and are able to make the Elden Ring board game their best one yet.

Deep Rock Galactic is a first-person co-op mining game which has seen a great deal of success following its Early Access launch back in 2018 – and later bolstered by being a free PS+ title earlier this year. The IP is now going from video game to board game, as Deep Rock Galactic – The Board Game has been announced on Kickstarter.

As mentioned, Deep Rock Galactic is a first-person co-op mining game where you and your teammates must excavate minerals from down below, all the while navigating the dangerous terrain and fighting off aggressive underground creatures. This gameplay flow is now being translated into a board game.

Playable with 1-4 people, each Deep Rock Galactic match can last from between 1 to 2 and a half hours, and while we don't yet fully know how the board game works, those curious are able to get their hands on an early version of the rule book to digitally flip through.

As with all Kickstarter projects, there are a number of different tiers which one can support with. In this case, those who cough up £55 can get their hands on the standard edition of the game – though the tiers can go up to over £750.

Despite its status as a Kickstarter project, the product’s development is seemingly well underway as Deep Rock Galactic – The Board Game is planned to be delivered by December 2022. If this board game piqued your interest, you wouldn’t be the only one, as shortly after the Kickstarter’s launch, it surpassed its funding goal of £168,287. As of writing, the game has already seen total pledges surpassing £1.2 Million – and it keeps rising. Kickstarter is an excellent way for smaller, more niche products to get made, satisfying both the creators and the fans. It will be interesting to see just how much Deep Rock Galactic – The Board Game ends up making.

It would be a huge understatement to merely state that the Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 Kickstarter has been a success. It's on its way to becoming the most pledged to board game ever and that's meant lots of updates from the creator. To try and give himself a break, he put up a challenge to beat a Mario Maker level he created – and it was promptly finished in less than two hours.

Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5 is the updated version of the board game of the same name and to fund its creation the developers have gone back to the crowd funding well that helped spawn the original game's creation. Exceeding all expectations, it blew past its $100,000 goal in no time, generating over a million dollars in funding in under 20 minutes and now it's on to much greater heights.

kingdomdeath

But with creator Adam Poots feeling like he needed a short break from maintaining the campaign, he challenged people to beat his Kingdom Death 1-1 level from Mario Maker. While fiendishly tough, it's difficulty relies much on the random generation of some of the enemies and their actions. Even then though it only took one gamer an hour and a half of respawning to finish it.

*Warning* some NSFW language.

[yframe url='http#://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8fROutZqJY']

While Poots did later lament not specifying that a backer be the one to complete the level, he has accepted the victory and will now create a new, unplanned extra for the game which many pledge levels will be able to enjoy.

Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5, the updated and expanded version of the 2012 Kickstarter success, could end up being the most funded board game ever on Kickstarter. Having raised over $6 million in just a few days, it currently sits just two and a half million behind Exploding Kittens, the biggest crowd funded board game on the site.

kingdomdeath

Kingdom Death: Monster was a Kickstarter success back in 2012, where more than five thousand people pledged over $2 million to bring the game to life. It blends Dark-Souls like cooperative battles, with highly customisable characters, a deep and difficult combat experience, settlement building and at the core of it all, high-quality miniatures to play with.

After several years of success and stock of the original game running dry, the creators have now returned to Kickstarter to create Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5, which offers new monsters to fight, new challenges to overcome and an expanded story.

What's doubly impressive about the success of the new Kingdom Death though, is that it is far from cheap. It already has near $13,000 backers and the cheapest option is an upgrade from the original base game, which costs $50. If you want to actually buy the base game it's at least $200, which at the current exchange rate means UK buyers would have to shell out £160 just to play the basic version of this game. If you pre-purchase all of the planned expansions, you'll be spending as much as $1,666, but you won't get them all until perhaps as late as 2020.

If you compare this to something like Exploding Kittens, you could grab a full game for $20. That's why some 220,000+ people kicked into it. In comparison, Kingdom Death is doing similar numbers, but with less than 15,000 people behind it.

As much as I loved Stoic Game's Banner Saga, with all of its Viking lore, Disney-like art style and tactical combat, the enemies in the game did grow a little dull after a while. They were all the same and their attacks didn't change much, even if they did have a thematically appropriate endless, emotionless feel to them. That's likely still the same in the board game based on the world too, but the models look wondrous. I really want to paint them.

Called Warbands, the cooperative board game is designed with 2-4 players in mind, as they take on the roles of various characters from within the Banner Saga universe. The team must traverse the snowy landscape, fighting enemy ‘warbands', levelling up and dealing with some of the random events that plagued those who have battled through the single player digital experience.

Those events are card based, so while your choices might be noble, it won't always be easy to figure out what the most positive outcome will be.

When it comes to combat, the developers have made a point of stripping luck from the equation. You can move a set distance, attack for a set amount or use a certain skill, which has a pre-defined outcome. There's no dice, no spinny wheels and no card pulling in combat. You fight and die by the numbers.

warbandsgame

Although that is something that should appeal to the more tactical players out there, the lack of any randomness does have the potential to lead to a power-gamer on the team doing all the maths for everyone (as per PCG) – though that is a somewhat present danger in any cooperative game.

Stoic has kept the pledge levels simple for those wanting to contribute. The base $15 one will get you the Banner Saga PC game, as well as a Kickstarter exclusive miniature for the board game. Upping the ante to $80 (£60) gets you the board game itself, as well as all physical stretch goals reached – though shipping will be extra.

For $200 (or $190 if you got there early), which works out to £131, you get the board game, all physical stretch goals, plus all the add on purchases. Those include additional Dredge enemy miniatures, some willpower “crystals,” an additional boss monster, a new Godstone mini-expansion and a number of digital extras like the Banner Saga sound track and access to the second game for free when it comes out.

If you just want to see Stoic succeed however, you don't need to pay anything. It's already passed its Kickstarter goal and has 21 days to go. This campaign is going to do fine.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The entirely tactical combat seems like it could miss out on some of the epic moments created by dice tension, but likewise it will eliminate any feeling of unfairness the game may have. What do you think of games without any random component at all?

It seems far too long since we battled Dredge, the elements and each other in the brutal world of The Banner Saga, with its beautiful artwork and haunting music, but part two isn't supposed to be too far away now. If it does turn out to take a little longer than expected though, perhaps we can tide ourselves over with a war on the tabletop instead, as Stoic is teaming up with crowd funding veterans MegaCon, to build a board game variant of the fantasy universe.

Although details are incredibly thin on the ground right now, the official site describes the game as: “An innovative, cooperative miniature-based board game that deals with the difficulties and consequences of decision making.”

This is quite reassuring, as it makes the game sound like it will have more of the elements of the original PC title, rather than being a remake of the combat system which has already been playable separately as Banner Saga: Factions, released in the run up to the release of the full game.

bannerwarbands

However judging from impressions at the recent MegaCon booth at GenCon 2015, we won't have long to find out exactly what the game is about, as it's said to be pretty far along in development. That may mean that when the promised Kickstarter campaign launches laster this year, that it will act more as a pre-order system than a developmental fund raiser. Although not necessarily in the spirit of Kickstarer, those willing to put money down early could get their copies far sooner than normal.

AS PCG points out though, there are some concerns about MegaCon's past and the fact that it has yet to fully release its already crowd funded games in their entirety.

Often the easiest way to introduce more traditional board gamers or non-gamers to more in-depth tabletop experiences like RPGs, is through “lite” versions, like Heroquest, or Castle Ravenloft, but these games can still be overly complicated for younger players, with a lot of options and counters to keep track of. Little Dungeon scales it back even further, reducing the core concepts down to simple card play, making it much easier for your children to learn the concepts of the genre in a simple setting.

littledungeon

Currently on Kickstarter with three days to go (and $400 needed to cross the finish line) Little Dungeon and its first dungeon, Turtle Rock, features cards for monsters, loot and weaponry, with players trying to kill as many enemies as possible, without dying and all the while collecting as much treasure as they can carry.

Designed to be played by 2-4 players over 20-30 minutes, the game offers an entry level experience for those just learning the ropes and has a kid friendly art style, with goofy enemies and colourful weaponry. There's plenty of tiers if you want to send some cash the designer's way, with the chepeast way to get the game in your hands, a $5 print your own version. However for $15 (+$10 for overseas postage) you get the base game. At the top end, for $150 (£90) you get the game, some extra cards, a couple of Tshirts, a game prototype and a big concept art print.

If you want to help Tiny Dungeon cross the threshold, pledge some cash on its Kickstarter campaign here.

Chances are at some point this Christmas and New Year season, at least one of your family members tried to get you to play Monopoly, Scrabble or maybe even Pictionary. If you want to wash that bland board-gaming taste out of your mouth, then this Mega Man one might be the one to do it – though you'll have to wait almost until next Christmas to get it.

Currently on Kickstarter – and having easily breezed past its goal – the Mega Man game is a multiplayer, competitive title that sees you and your friends battling through stages as the Blue Bomber, fighting many of the traditional bosses to reach the centre and fight Dr Wily before anyone else. During your turn though, your friends and family will play as your enemies and must try and hamper your progress.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50MOM12PAm8′]

Mega Man the board game is being published by Jasco games and is part of the company's celebration of Mega Man's 25th anniversary. It's fully approved by Capcom, though it isn't doing anything to help out with the game's development.

Several stretch goals have already been smashed, but if the campaign makes it to $500,000 before the next 18 days are up, Jasco will upgrade all games to feature pre-painted models.

Mega Man the board game is set for release in October 2014, though as with all Kickstarter campaigns, that could change.

Christmas is a time for hanging out with families, drinking and eating too much and more often than not, breaking out a game or two. Usually these are simple affairs like Scrabble, Monopoly or perhaps something without a board and dice, like charades. However, this being a site of tech enthusiasts, gamers, and nerds, it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't some slightly deeper gaming going on among the Kitguru masses this holiday season.

For example, I picked up this fun little game from the Mrs this year:

You know it's good because the rule book is more than 10 pages long

I haven't been lucky enough to get a full game in yet – there's only so much time between food and wet kisses from ageing relatives to play games in – but it's looking to be about the most geekified present I received this year and I'm looking forward to checking it out.

But I can't be the only one that's had a good scratch of his nerd-itch this Christmas. What about the rest of you?

A board game designer who was able to gather over $123,000 through Kickstarter (nearly four times the originally requested amount) has announced that despite none of the rewards being fulfilled, that they had run out of money and the project was now closed.

If you're now a bit panicked that the game might be one you backed, it's called The Doom That came to Atlantic City and if you did back it, yea, your money is pretty much gone. The creator has apologised profusely and said that he plans to pay everyone back in full, but chances are that could take years as he doesn't have a job right now.

But what happened to all that money? You might be asking. Let's turn to the man responsible for letting it all disappear, Erik Chevalier: “Every possible mistake was made, some due to my inexperience in board game publishing, others due to ego conflicts, legal issues and technical complications. No matter the cause though, these could all have been avoided by someone more experienced and I apparently was not that person.”

“Everyone involved agreed on this. Since then rifts have formed and every error compounded the growing frustration, causing only more issues,” he continued. “After paying to form the company, for the miniature statues, moving back to Portland, getting software licenses and hiring artists to do things like rule book design and art conforming the money was approaching a point of no return.”

doom
Should have been called “The doom that came to everyone's trust in Kickstarter projects.”

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you aren't concrete about every aspect of your pitch. We talked about this a while ago with my piece on Climbing the Kickstarter Mountain. However instead of in Nick's case where he has simply spent a long time playing catchup, in this case, the disgruntled backers of The Doom That Came to Atlantic City have referred the case to the Oregon Department of Justice which oversees fraud cases in the local area.

While Chevalier has said his intentions were always good, it's not sitting well with his backers. As many have pointed out, it's hard to understand how an original budget of $35,000 couldn't be covered with almost $100,000 more than that total.

It's also been admitted by Chevalier that part of the expenses went on funding his move to a different state, suggesting that a lot of that money went on something that wasn't even to do with the project.

KitGuru Says: My guess is that when initial expectations were increased, the creators thought they could make the project much bigger without doing the same level of planning, so the money was frittered away very quickly. This should be a lesson to anyone doing a Kickstarter, be very careful – as shown in this instance, it could potentially ruin the creator's life.

[Cheers CVG]

If you've been busy trying to win one of our giveaway Bioshock Infinite codes, or have already played your way through Irrational's epic sky-faring adventure, you'll probably be interested to know that it's getting a board game treatment that'll be released sometime in the next few months.

**Mild Spoilers to follow**

Called the Siege of Columbia, it pits the forces of the Vox Populi against the founders of the city, with Handymen, armored soldiers and even Songbird himself as potential combatants. Designed with two or four players in mind, teams take over the forces of each side and using a combination of figures and cards, have to take over the city and eliminate the enemy.

Booker and Elizabeth are wild cards in this game, with the latter offering obvious impressive powers to whichever side can control her, while the former will of course be trying his hardest to prevent either from taking her.

It's currently priced with a $25 discount for pre-orders via Plaid Hat (current price $60), though anyone ordering from the UK will therefore need to stomach a nasty £25 or so postage charge. Fortunately Forbidden Planet is stocking it too, but as with everything this side of the pond, it's much more expensive: £60.99 at the time of writing.

KitGuru Says: It's a bit of s shame that the mechanics are restricted to two or four players. It might have been nice to have a third of fifth player option for controlling Booker or something similar. Despite that though, I still will probably need to buy this. It looks pretty awesome.

Wolfire Games, the original creators of the Humble Bundle indi funding initiative, has released a new game that shows just how board games should be played online: with far less rules and real time players.

One of the problems with online board gaming – and card games to a similar extent – is that you're bound by the rules with links of iron. That is, they are enforced for you, not by your knowledge of the game or by your fellow players, but by the rules of the universe the game is made in. You aren't rolling two dice because you picked up two dice, you're doing so because the pressed the “roll dice,” button and two dice were rolled.

However that's not how it works when playing board games in the real world. Mistakes are made, rules are learned and ultimately it's less about the game itself and more about the interaction between players. Desperate Gods looks to inject some of this mentality into PC board games.

By stripping out any inhibitive rules and simply letting players throw dice, draw cards and move their pieces however they want, they entrust the players with playing the game properly. This might make public games with unruly players a bit difficult, but ones with friends become far more enjoyable. Not only can you fiddle around with pieces during your opponents turn, but you can see their mouse pointer too and watch their actions. Even the music is synced up to make it a shared experience, but with the convenience of online play.

Thinking this is the way board games should work on the PC, Wolfire has made the source available in the hope that people will mod the game to make other games playable online too. You can download the Desperate Gods for PC and Mac for free here.

KitGuru Says: I like this a lot. As a big board game fan, it'd be great to see more of these sorts of games appearing online with more of an honour system that one that's set in stone.
