The official forums for Day Z have been hacked, with email addresses, usernames and passwords for all accounts made vulnerable. As a security measure the forums have now been closed while the flaw is fixed, and all users are being encouraged to change their security information anywhere else where it was reused.

“A security incident occurred on forums.dayzgame.com recently. According to our investigation all usernames, emails and passwords from forums.dayzgame.com were accessed and downloaded by hackers,” reads the email from Bohemia Interactive.

It did clarify that passwords were encrypted, so will take some effort for hackers to access them, but that doesn't mean they won't eventually.

forumhack

Although no fingers were directly pointed for why the breach occurred, Bohemia did announce that it would soon be dropping the IPBoards login system for the forum and would be replacing it with its own Bohemia account system. That will happen within the next two weeks, at which point we assume that the forums will be back to normal.

“We ask for your patience over the next few days and weeks as we implement this and other security overhauls, as there are likely to be service interruptions and forum unavailability from time to time,” the email continues.

KitGuru Says: As usual guys, make sure you change any information if you reused your password from the DayZ forums.

Thanks to Keenhail from the KitGuru Steam Group for the heads up on this.

If Day Z hadn't been a game that players could enjoy murdering each other in during its development, it would almost be considered vaporware at this point. Started as a mod by Dean Hall in early 2012, and eventually developed solely by Bohemia as an official title after he left to create his own games elsewhere, it's been a long long time since DayZ was the fresh faced kid on the block. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, as Bohemia has announced that a beta for the game will be launched later this year.

While it might be easy to argue that a beta period is a bit redundant when the game has been in active player testing since very early on its lifecycle, it's still a significant step towards the final release of the game sometime in 2016.

dayz

Other news about the game confirmed by lead producer, Brian Hicks, is that Day Z is going to have a single player mode as well and allow players to host their own servers. That way, if they want to try solo survival against the zombies of the world, or roll around with a team of friends without the ever present threat of other players taking them down, they can do.

Better yet, when released, Day Z will come with Steam Workshop support, which means mods and other player driven content. Although perhaps stumbling down an ironic rabbit hole with the fact that they would be mods, of a game that was a mod of a game, that should increase the amount of content available for the fully fledged zombie survival experience.

KitGuru Says: I feel like I should have tried DayZ at this point, but so many people have complained about the bugs on the standalone and mod version, it didn't ever seem worth it. I'd rather wait until release and keep my fingers crossed that the only reason I'd die is because I made a legitimate mistake, not because a zombie glitched through the wall and bit me.

Following on from the success of the DayZ standalone alpha launch, which has seen over a million people pay for the sandbox zombie survival sim since its release just over a month ago, Dean Hall, the original mod's creator has been talking about the game's future development in a Reddit AMA and according to him, the game's about to get a whole lot harder.

Apparently that's all down to the inclusion of new equipment, a throwing system and improvised weaponry. That should make it easier for players to get off the ground floor weapon wise, as well as making silent kills and therefore steering clear of the attention grabbing firearms.

“The plan is to increase the difficulty significantly as new functionality comes online (such as throwing and improvised weapons, hunting, bow and arrow,” he said. Other features were discussed, such as the inclusion of barricades and vehicles. Ground based ones will come first, utilising the new attachment system that's being used for certain guns. Airborne vehicles will come later, as they're a bit more complicated and would need a system that requires maintenance so they don't become too overpowered.

In other words, get ready for a lot more of this

All of this is going to take some time though, as Hall admits that the game is currently around 20 per cent of where he wants it to be.

Some other strange revelations came out of the AMA too, like the fact that rapper Jay-Z tried to have the name of the game changed, because it was felt to be too close to his own moniker. Dean Hall politely refused. We also learned that the real reason DayZ snowballed to success like it did, was because of 4Chan.

KitGuru Says: How is everyone enjoying the standalone so far? It's a little ropey compared to the mod as I understand it, but are the improvements worth it?

The standalone version of DayZ launched yesterday, with its creator, Dean “Rocket,” Hall suggesting that only the hardcore fans should drop £20 on it, as it is in a very early alpha stage and is therefore not fully featured or even that polished at the moment, but it is at least out there. That didn't deter fans though, as in just 24 hours, over 172,000 copies were sold.

These stats were announced by Bohemia CEO Marek Spanel on his blog (via Eurogamer), who quoted 172,500 copies sold and a total of 142,403 concurrent players. However he also cited that “many,” bugs had been discovered and that the work ahead would be hard.

It's positive though, as was Dean Hall's reaction to the mass influx of players, saying on his twitter: “about 200 players a second at the moment in the database… what the hell.”

dayzbug
Even Ex-Epic developer Cliff Blezinski was playing it, sending in this image as his first bug report

However it wasn't long before he announced a patch as well, suggesting the Bohemia guys had been pulling an all nighter on this one. It will address lots of known bugs, as well as adding in a few new features. The list of tweaks and improvements includes:

  • Increased battery drain by flashlights
  • Server tab defaults to internet
  • Drinking directly from wells works now
  • Disabled head movement when unconscious
  • Shock damage recovery speed increased
  • You can now force feed other players
  • Rain should look prettier now
  • You can open cans with sharp tools, but it damages them
  • Greeting animations switched to left hand to avoid item clipping

More patches are expected to follow in short order, as with almost 200,000 players (a number this game will surely break today) there's going to be a lot of bug reports.

KitGuru Says: Any of you guys tooling around the new Chernarus at the moment? What's it like?

ARMA I, II and III, developer Bohemia Interactive, has announced that its website was hit by hackers and that some personal information may have been copied out from its user database. As a safety precaution, it has announced that all passwords will be reset.

“We have unfortunately discovered that an illegal attempt has been made to access certain parts of our online websites,” it said in a statement. This has led “to the download of a database containing usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords.”

Bohemia players will need to pay this page a visit.

It was keen to make it clear however, that since all passwords were encrypted, it's unlikely that whoever was responsible has managed to glean anything of particular value from the hack, it just wants to play safe.

As CVG points out, players that want to login, will now need to reset their password before doing so, by going here.

It's always a good idea in these situations to make sure, if you used the same password for ARMA as you have anywhere else, that you make sure you change all instances of that password. It's no good switching up your ARMA account and leaving your Facebook or email account vulnerable.

KitGuru Says: This is also why it's quite a good idea to have an email that's dedicated to games you play. That way if there's ever a compromise, like there has been here, it doesn't matter so much.

The two Bohemia developers that were arrested for suspected espionage and photographing a military base on the island of Lemnos, have finally been set free after over four months of being held captive – despite the fact that they were merely doing research for upcoming games ARMA III and DayZ.

While spending their 128 days behind Greek bars, Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar faced a potential further 20 years if found guilty of the crimes they were said to have committed. Fortunately that looks less likely now, as while they have technically only been released on bail, they are allowed to return to their native Czech Republic which should keep them far enough from Greek prosecution to matter.

Bohemia Devs
The two developers have seen a lot of support from the gaming community

Greece certainly has many other problems to be sorting out than wayward game scouts.

Apparently the whole thing was organised through a conversation between the Greek and Czech Prime Ministers. Bohemia has yet to officially release a statement, but developer of DayZ, Dean Hall spoke out on twitter:

“Ivan and Martin have been bailed after 128 days! This is the greatest news I could ever receive! Can't wait to see them.” He also linked to the official update site for the pair's release: HelpIvanMartin.org.

KitGuru Says: Good to see the boys released. Presumably they'll be less keen on volunteering for scout duty on future Bohemia projects now.

The release date for the two Bohemia developers currently being held in a Greek Prison on charges of spying on military installations, has been delayed due to strikes involving those in the Greek Justice System, meaning they're unlikely to be freed until the 20th October at the earliest.

The lawyer for both Ivan Buchata and Martin Pezlar, Panagiotis Eleftherioy, has been speaking with the official freedom campaign website. He said that: “As many of you know, the justice system in Greece is on indefinite strike. These strikes last at least until October 20. According to Greek law, a case has to be on trial within 120 days after arrest.”

He also said that the best thing fans of the developers and their games could do, would be to email or contact the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and their local embassy, as well as sending in freely available images of military bases on the island of Limnos. Considering both Buchata and Pezlar were arrested for photographing military bases, this could prove the ridiculousness of their charges.

So far the petition requesting their release has reached 12,000 signatures and is steadily growing.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you guys corresponded with anyone to help the freedom effort? If so let us know what the response was.

Day Z, the zombie survival, permadeath mod for the three year old ARMA II, has now finally been given the go ahead as a full game. The original creator of the mod, Dean “Rocket” Hall will be the project lead, with ARMA II creator, Bohemia handling the publishing.

The announcement was made by Hall on the Day Z blog, beginning the post with: “That's right, this is actually happening.”

The idea of turning the incredibly popular mod – it recently reached a million players and helped sell over 25 per cent of ARMA II's total copies – into a full game in its own right, has been around for a while, but for several reasons it hadn't been finalised. Apparently Mr Hall was offered several big money gigs at different companies to develop the game, but turned down them all in favour of working with Bohemia. Presumably this was so he could continue development using the Real Virtuality engine that has been used as a base for the Day Z mod.

So far because the mod was built upon ARMA II, it's been using the Real Virtuality 3 engine. However some are speculating that the official Day Z game would make use of the next-gen Real Virtuality 4 engine.

Day Z Official
That's right folks, it's happening

If that happens though, it might be difficult for Mr Hall to keep both the game and the mod at the same level, since he plans to continue developing the mod alongside the game – so that those who purchased ARMA II in order to play it aren't left out. Presumably though at some point, the full game will break away in terms of functionality or features, since undoubtedly a standalone game is going to be easier to put together from scratch than a modification based on an already finished game.

Day Z is set to follow the Minecraft development model, so will be selling alpha, beta and finally full copies of the game throughout the development cycle, with early adopters getting not only early access, but unlimited updates throughout the life of the game.

If you want to check out the official game website where the tagline is “It's your story,” you can find here at www.dayzgame.com.

KitGuru Says: This is great to see, but not surprising. When you can leverage a million players you have some real bargaining power.
