After originally releasing as a PlayStation VR exclusive in late 2018, Borderlands 2 VR has now made its way over to PC. The game didn’t get off to a great start on Steam, with odd issues popping up depending on the headset being used. Fortunately, the developers have been quick to update.

At launch, the Oculus Rift S seemed to have the least amount of trouble with Borderlands 2 VR. However, HTC VIVE and Valve Index owners were experiencing broken tracking, poor world/player scaling and incorrect positional rendering.

Patches have been coming through since launch to fix a few issues players have been facing. Some fixes can also be made in the game settings itself. Player height can be adjusted to combat odd world scaling and hand/weapon positions on the VIVE should now be corrected and can be further adjusted in the options menu.

The Valve Index headset does not have official support but with some custom controller bindings and some options menu adjustments, more players have been able to get it working at an acceptable level.

There are still a couple of problems that might put some players off though. Player movement is based on head-tracking rather than the controllers, which makes smooth locomotion less Ideal for a good number of players. Rifle scopes also behave similarly to Fallout 4 VR, giving a black border around a zoomed in crosshair rather than a more realistic view.

Borderlands 2 isn’t a perfect VR port by any means but recent updates have already made some improvements and hopefully, there will be more on the way.

KitGuru Says: Borderlands 2 VR didn’t have the best start, especially for a full priced game. Have any of you tried this one out yet? Did you run into any issues?

Prior to the announcement of Borderlands 3 this year, Gearbox started reinvigorating interest in the franchise with Borderlands 2 VR. The game has been exclusive to the PlayStation VR since its launch in December but it looks like the game is finally heading to PC.

Borderlands 2 VR for Windows PC has now been rated by the ESRB, indicating that a release is imminent. We knew last year that the game had an approximate six-month window for PSVR exclusivity, which ran out in May. With that in mind, the PC version could be dropping any day now.

Borderlands 2 VR is an intriguing idea but the game does come with some unfortunate pitfalls. The VR version only contains base-game content and none of the DLCs. It also didn't support co-op play on the PSVR but we hope that might change for the PC launch.

The other issue is what platform Borderlands 2 VR will release on. So far, we know that Borderlands 3 is going to be an Epic Games Store exclusive until some time in 2020. However, the Epic Games Store traditionally doesn't sell VR titles, so we could see this appear across Steam and Oculus at the same time, assuming no other paid platform exclusivity deals have been taken.

KitGuru Says: I would be interested in trying out Borderlands 2 VR but not having co-op would take some of the fun out of it. Did any of you try this one out on PSVR? Or will you be giving it a go when it comes to PC?

The Borderlands series has been on a bit of a hiatus over the last few years. We've known for quite some time that Borderlands 3 is in the works but so far, there has been very little noise on that front. However, Borderlands 2 is making a comeback this year, with a new VR version set to release in December. At first, Borderlands 2 VR will be exclusive to PlayStation VR users but that should change next year.

As part of Sony's YouTube trailer for Borderlands 2 VR, a small piece of text is shown stating that “Borderlands 2 VR is exclusive to PS VR for a minimum of 5 months from launch”. So between the 14th of December and the 14th of May 2019, PlayStation will be the only place to try it out.

It is unlikely that we'll see the PC version land immediately after the 14th of May but it does make a summer launch very possible. A PC version will be a little more complicated to get up and running though, as support will need to be ensured for multiple headsets with different tracking and control offerings, including the Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

KitGuru Says: Thanks to the game's art style, I could see Borderlands 2 holding up very well in VR. It is nice to see more major publishers backing virtual reality with huge titles like this. How many of you currently own a VR headset? Are there any other big games you would like to see make the jump?

Are you in need of something to play this weekend? Valve has you covered as Borderlands 2 and Dishonoured are both free on Steam for the next few days. In addition, 2K Games is having a publisher sale, you can pick up Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition at 75 per cent off. You can also save a fair bit on Bioshock, XCOM and Civilisation V.

Dishonoured isn't a part of the 2K Games catalogue but it is still worth talking about. If you've yet to play the Steam-Punk esque action-stealth title, then now is as good a time as any, take part in the free weekend- If you enjoy the game then it's worth picking up the GOTY Edition for 66%. This way, you'll get to play the two DLC expansions, bringing in around six hours of extra gameplay with new powers and characters.

Borderlands is a game you are more likely to be familiar with. The co-op shooter has become hugely popular over the last couple of years. You can try and play solo but its much more fun with a friend or two.

Borderlands 2 does have a story line but the game is built to be accessible to everyone- even those who didn’t play the first game. Coincidentally, we are due a new Borderlands game later this year, it’s called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and will give some background on Handsome Jack’s character as well as Claptrap.

Update: Just to clarify, these games are only free to play for the weekend, you do have to buy the games in order to keep playing past Sunday.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: These are two fine games for you to try out this weekend. It’s all free so you might as well give it a shot. Will you guys be trying out either Borderlands or Dishonoured this weekend?

Borderlands 2 was released way back in October 2012, so the fact that Gearbox is still pumping out DLC for it and gamers are still buying it and playing it, is testament to the longevity of a game that at its core is a grind for better loot as bad as any MMO, but it's great fun. And it looks destined to continue that in the next, and then the last DLC pack.

The next one to land will be another Head Hunter pack called Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre, which is all about a coming together of two of the world's big families and its your job to play match maker, as Moxxi sends you on a run for love potion ingredients. It being a Head Hunter pack though, there will also be an available boss mission that will unlock unique heads for each of the Vault Hunters you complete it with.

moxxi
Moxxi has unsurprisingly become a popular cosplay character

This particular bit of DLC is set to be released on 11th Feburary for $2.99 (so quite likely £2.99 here).

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwOKFMOUVTE']

It turns out Moxxi's latest challenge will be the penultimate piece of DLC for Borderlands 2, with Gearbox releasing just one more after it. That one will also be a Head Hunter pack, entitled: Sir Hammerlock and the Son of Crawmerax. All we know for now is that it'll be released in April.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you been playing Borderlands 2 since release? I must admit I blew through the main campaign with friends but we never really explored much beyond that.

One of the writers for Borderlands 2, Anthony Burch, has responded to criticism about the character Tiny Tina, which some people have been suggesting speaks in a manner that could be considered racist, or at the very least stereotypical. He's suggested that this was in no way the intention but if people have a problem with it, she'll speak differently in future DLC.

The words and phrases used by Tina that have got a few individuals riled up are “badonkadonk” and “crunk”, which some have equated to “stereotypical low-class black lingo” and “stereotyped ebonics.” Burch said when creating the character he wanted to mix in that sort of way of speaking, with naivete and fairytale to create a wacky character, which anyone not overly dramatic when it comes to language that has played the game, will attest to.

Tiny Tina
Of course the blowhards who complained to Mr Burch didn't say anything about the fact that a young girl is killing people.

This discussion went far enough that the head of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford weighed in, defending Mr Burch: “Tina is not racist because you are not racist,” Pitchford told Burch. “You're a pillar of tolerance and inclusion.”

One more Borderlands 2 DLC pack is expected to be released and if Tina features, it seems likely that she won't be speaking in her usual manner, despite the fact that it was hilarious and in keeping with the style of the game. Unfortunately for those that felt they needed to speak out against this so they themselves would seem not racist, already written and produced in-game dialogue cannot be altered. Shame that.

KitGuru Says: I think these people are being far too sensitive. They don't realise either, that the people who genuinely aren't racist, don't see racism where it isn't. If you think using words of a culture that is not your own, makes someone a racist, you're silly and potentially a racist yourself, or at least far too concerned with race. Its intention that creates prejudice, not language.

That said, maybe these guys have a point. I'm a short guy, “Tiny” Tina is making fun of someone who obviously has problems with her height. I'm offended. This game should be banned. [/sarcasm]

Thanks Kotaku.

Nvidia has released an update for its graphics card drivers, bringing the latest WHQL certified release to 306.23. It brings with it quite an extensive list of updates, with a focus on getting ready for the release of both Borderlands 2 and the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria.

The two games now have dedicated SLI and Nvidia 3D vision profiles, as well as PhysX support. They aren't the only ones though, there's also: Orcs Must Die 2, Spec Ops: The Line, Torchlight II, Tornado Force, F1 2012, Darksiders 2, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and many more. For a full run down, check out the driver download page here.

Borderlands 2
PhysX has a big impact on Borderlands 2 visuals

The update adds support for the newly released GTX 660, 650 and 660 ti cards, as well as Nvidia TXAA technology. The new anti-aliasing standard is said to be specifically designed to “reduce temporal aliasing (crawling and flickering in motion)” by mixing up hardware AA and a temporal filter. While this isn't a widely used piece of tech at the moment, now that it's fully supported by Nvidia, expect other companies to adopt it in their game developments. If you want to see it in action now, you'll need a copy of The Secret World.

It wouldn't be a big driver update however without performance improvements. Both the GTX 560 and GTX 680 received big gains in certain titles. The 560 will boost Batman: Arkham City by 14%, while the GTX 680 will jump Total War: Shogun 2 a ridiculous 60% in frame rates – due to a performance issue with the last game patch being fixed. Other games that see improvements include Dragon Age II, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat and The Witcher 2: Assasins of kings; though some require SLI to be seen.

KitGuru Says: There's plenty more updated in this one, though those are the biggest changes – you can read about them while the download completes.
