Embracer Group has been undergoing a cost-cutting initiative over the past year, leading to several studio closures and layoffs. Other major companies under the Embracer banner have instead been sold. Earlier this month we saw Saber Interactive split off from its former parent company. Now, Gearbox Entertainment has also been sold.

There were several bidders for Gearbox Entertainment when the company went up for sale a couple of years ago. Now, the company appears to be going back to its true home. Take-Two is acquiring Gearbox Entertainment, including the company's main studios in Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal and Gearbox Quebec in a deal worth $460 million.

The rights to Borderlands, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, Duke Nukem and Homeworld will be staying with Gearbox. Meanwhile, Embracer Group will hang on to Gearbox Publishing, which will be renamed once the deal completes. As the owner of Gearbox Publishing, Embracer Group will retain the rights to Neverwinter Online and Star Trek Online, as well as the Cryptic, Lost Boys Interactive and Captured Dimensions studios.

Embracer CEO and co-founder, Lars Wingefors, stated that this deal will aid in lowering net debt and cash flow for the company. Meanwhile, Gearbox Entertainment should have a more stable home at Take-Two, one of the most successful publishing companies in the industry.

KitGuru Says: The writing has been on the wall for a while, with Embracer previously confirming that it is considering selling off Gearbox to improve its financial situation. We wondered if that was still the case after selling off Saber Interactive. Moving forward, Gearbox will be working with Take-Two once again as a studio within the 2K family, which is fitting given past involvement in the Borderlands series.

In recent years, Embracer Group has been rapidly buying up development studios, swiftly becoming one of the largest companies in the gaming industry. However, the group's financial situation has been taking a turn, leading to an internal restructuring, resulting in the shutdown of studios like Volition. Now, Embracer may be considering selling off some of its studios, including Gearbox.

Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Entertainment back in 2021, opening the door for Gearbox to pursue its ambitions of transitioning into a multimedia company. However, according to a Reuters report, Embracer is now considering selling off Gearbox to recoup some cash as it looks to offset accrued debt.

The sale is apparently only being considered at this stage after receiving interest from third-party companies. Embracer paid around $1.4 billion for Gearbox just two years ago, so it would be interesting to see what sort of price the studio fetches now if a sale does go ahead.

The list of suitors is said to consist of “international gaming groups”. Gearbox is one of several major purchases Embracer has made in the last couple of years. Aside from Gearbox, Embracer also picked up Eidos and Crystal Dynamics, along with their associated IP, and the company took a big swing by acquiring The Lord of the Rings in 2022.

If Gearbox is sold, the most notable suitor would likely be Take-Two Interactive. The publisher's subsidiary, 2K Games, has partial ownership over the Borderlands IP, which is Gearbox's biggest earner. However, nothing is set in stone at this stage.

KitGuru Says: Embracer appears to have bit off more than it can chew. The company revived THQ only to repeat the same mistakes that led to that company's closure a decade ago, with a period of rapid growth followed by crippling debt and ‘restructuring'. Embracer does own some highly popular gaming IP at this point, so they may still be able to turn things around but it will certainly be difficult.

Borderlands 3 is the latest mainline entry in the fun and frantic first-person looter shooter franchise. Originally released back in 2019, the game was added to pretty much every platform available (even Google Stadia) – every platform except for the Nintendo Switch. In a surprise announcement, Borderlands 3 and all its DLC will be coming to Nintendo’s aging platform next week.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the team at Gearbox said “Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition hits Nintendo Switch on October 6, with physical pre-orders available TODAY!”

Being the Ultimate Edition, this $60 release includes the base game alongside all of its post-launch DLC. The only limitation placed upon the Switch version seems to be the fact that both locally and online, the game only supports 2-player co-op (compared to 4 players on other platforms).

If that’s not enough Borderlands for you, PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can get their hands on the Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box, which includes the games:

  • Borderlands
  • Borderlands 2
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  • Tales from the Borderlands
  • Borderlands 3
  • New Tales from the Borderlands

This collection retails for a whopping $149.99, though there is currently a launch discount which reduces it all the way down to a much more reasonable $59.99. This price is further reduced if you own any of the games included in the bundle (though discounts vary by system).

With Borderlands 3 being a late PS4/Xbox One generation title, it will be interesting to see how the game both looks and plays on the Nintendo Switch. We won’t have to wait long to find out.

It has been a few years since Gearbox dropped Borderlands 3. Since then, Gearbox has worked on a couple of spin-off games but it looks like now, the studio's attention is turning back to the mainline series, with Borderlands 4 in development.

While not officially announced yet, Games Radar points out that actor, Angie Jho Le, added Borderlands 4 to their voice acting résumé, specifically voicing the previously unseen character Aiyumi. Producer Nadia Danova, has also listed work on Borderlands 4 on their LinkedIn page.

If that wasn't evidence enough that Borderlands 4 was now in development, a tweet from Gearbox founder, Randy Pitchford, offers more evidence. In a recruitment tweet, Pitchford calls for developers to “get in on some Borderlands action”, adding that they are “working on the big one”, which seems to be a clear indication that a new mainline Borderlands game is in the works and not a new spin-off.

That tweet was posted back in 2021, which would mean that Gearbox has been working on Borderlands 4 for a while now already. If voice work is being recorded now, we wouldn't be surprised to see a proper announcement for Borderlands 4 in the next year.

Last year, Konami announced a slew of new Silent Hill projects in development. One of the more interesting projects came from Genvid Entertainment, which is building an “interactive series” using the Silent Hill IP. It looks like the studio has another similar project in the works for Borderlands.

Genvid Entertainment is now also working on Borderlands EchoVision Live, a new interactive streaming series that explores the misadventures of eight tourists stranded on Eden-6 after setting off on an Adventure Safari as space tourists. The audiences that tune in will get to make decisions to shape the direction of the story as it unfolds.

Unfortunately, the announcement doesn't reveal exactly how the interactive part of all this works. It could end up being something similar to Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, or it could end up being similar to a Twitch Plays, where the community watching the stream gets to vote on actions and the majority vote wins.

Silent Hill: Ascension was initially announced with a 2023 release window but a specific date has yet to be announced. Borderlands EchoVision Live does not have any release date or release window at this time.

KitGuru Says: While I do like the idea of something like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, where it plays out like a choose your own adventure with multiple story branches, a Twitch Plays approach where decisions are decided for all viewers is less appealing to me personally.

All the way back in early 2020 it was announced that a film adaptation of the popular Gearbox FPS franchise Borderlands was in the works, with horror director Eli Roth heading its production. Though we have yet to get a trailer for the film, The Borderlands Movie has now gotten an official release date.

As reported first by Deadline, the Eli Roth directed Borderlands film will drop onto silver screens on the 9th of August 2024. Being distributed by Lionsgate, the film will follow popular character Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett):

“An infamous treasure hunter with a mysterious past, [who] reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. She forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Kevin Hart), once a highly respected soldier, but now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot.”

Eli Roth as a director is most familiar with the horror genre, having headed well-known films such as Cabin Fever, Hostel, and The Green Inferno. Speaking previously on the film, Roth stated “I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands, and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate — I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition.”

Sony’s revamped PlayStation Plus service seems to be somewhat of a success so far, with the console manufacturer in essence offering their own take on Xbox’s Game Pass. As with Game Pass however, Sony removes titles from the service on a semi-regular basis, with August set to see almost a dozen games delisted.

As reported by the PlayStation-focused publication ‘Push Square’ Sony announced the full list of games set to leave PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium on the 15th of August:

  • Borderlands 3 (PS5, PS4)
  • Nidhogg (PS4)
  • DCL – The Game (PS4)
  • Yakuza 0 (PS4)
  • Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
  • Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)
  • GRIP (PS4)
  • The Crew 2 (PS4)
  • 8-Bit Armies (PS4)
  • Carmageddon: Max Damage (PS4)

While not an insignificant number of titles are leaving, it is fortunate to see that PS Plus’ major heavy-hitters remain for now. That said, if you did want to give any of these games a try, you have a little under a month to do so.

In case you missed it, July’s PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium games are now available, including the likes of It Takes Two, Sniper Elite 5, The Ascent, World War Z and more.

Following some major successes, it seems as though the floodgates have been opened wide when it comes to the number of film and tv adaptations in the works based on original video game IPs. One rumoured project was claimed to be a Duke Nukem film, said to be in the works at Gearbox – though we now have official confirmation of its existence.

Last year The Hollywood Reporter claimed that a film based on the Duke Nukem franchise was in the works, though at the time IP owner Gearbox offered no comments on the matter. It is therefore interesting to see that the film has since been announced in a rather uneventful manner, writing as part of a recent studio acquisition press release:

“Gearbox Publishing was established in 2016 with the goal of helping developers around the world bring their products to market while retaining their unique creative visions. Gearbox Studios was formed in 2022 creates cutting-edge transmedia opportunities, including the upcoming movies and series based on Borderlands, Duke Nukem, and Brothers in Arms. Gearbox Properties was founded in 2022 to manage Gearbox's wide variety of intellectual property across all products, mediums, and merchandise categories.”

This seems to be the first official acknowledgement of the film’s existence, and as such, it’ll be curious to see whether this was intentional or if the press release simply jumped the gun in that regard.

Either way, Duke Nukem very much feels like a product of its time and so hopefully Gearbox plans to take the character and world in an interesting direction. We will have to wait and see.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands released earlier this year to a warm reception from fans. Taking the Borderlands formula and giving it a fantasy twist seems to have worked out for developer Gearbox Software, as according to the studio, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is now its own franchise.

Speaking during Embracer Group’s annual general meeting (as transcribed by IGN), Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed the success of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, saying “Wonderlands shattered all of our target expectations, both critically and commercially, and I'm thrilled to report that in addition to great financial rewards from this victory that will be coming our way in the coming quarters, we have established a firm beachhead, and we now clearly have a new franchise on our hands.”

Additionally, Pitchford confirmed that “future experiences [are] already under development”. As mentioned, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands took players into a meta DnD-like world filled with magic and mysticism; and this seems to have paid off. While no sales data has been shared, we do know that the game exceeded the publisher’s expectations, and so it makes sense as to why Gearbox is taking this spin-off title and elevating it into its own franchise.

While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was enjoyed by most, one of the biggest complaints levied towards the game was that it shared many similarities with the original Borderlands franchise, and so in some ways felt like a palette swap. With Wonderlands becoming its own franchise however, hopefully the next game can separate itself further from Borderlands – truly making it feel like its own unique experience.

Humble Bundles are a great way for you to buy a collection of related titles for a relatively low cost – with a small portion of the proceedings also going to charity. Humble’s latest bundle has now gone live, allowing you to get your hands on a number of publisher 2K’s “Megahits.”

Available for the next two weeks, those who pay just £0.84 will be given:

  • Army Men RTS
  • Hidden & Dangerous: Action Pack
  • Hidden & Dangerous 2: Courage Under Fire
  • X-COM: COMPLETE PACK

Upping the pledge to £8.45 will net you the previous games, while also adding:

  • CivCity: Rome
  • Duke Nukem Forever Collection
  • Railroad Tycoon II Platinum
  • Railroad Tycoon 3
  • Sid Meier's Railroads
  • WWE 2K Battlegrounds
  • WWE 2K BATTLEGROUNDS – Ultimate Brawlers Pass
  • Golf Club 1092 + PGA TOUR

As always, the most expensive tier (£13.52) is where you’ll get all the good stuff (as well as all previous games), namely:

  • BioShock: The Collection
  • Borderlands 3 Super Deluxe
  • Mafia: Definitive Edition
  • PGA Tour 2K21
  • Sid Meier's Civilization VI
  • XCOM: Ultimate Collection

As a publisher, 2K owns a bucketload of IPs and while there are some notable “megahits” missing,  this bundle still includes some high quality and relatively recent titles for a price that is very easy to swallow.

Sony was initially very resistant to allowing game developers to enable cross-platform multiplayer in their games. This unfortunately had an impact on Borderlands 3, which received cross-play on all platforms except PlayStation. Fortunately whatever hang-ups that were present previously have been resolved just in time for the release of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

Gearbox has a Borderlands spin-off game coming next week – Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, and like Borderlands 3, the game will feature cross-play, so friends can group up and play together without platform restrictions. This time around, PlayStation is included in cross-play plans, so Xbox, PlayStation and PC players will all be able to team up.

This was confirmed by Gearbox founder, Randy Pitchford, on Twitter last night, saying: “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will ship on March 25 with full cross play for all platforms at launch, including PlayStation. Incredible work from the engineers at Gearbox Software with thanks to our partners at 2k Games and 1st parties, including Sony, for working together on this.”

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands features a full co-op campaign and has more of a fantasy setting compared to the other Borderlands titles. The game officially releases on the 25th of March.

As PlayStation fans eagerly await the reveal of the console manufacturer’s rumoured Game Pass competitor, Sony is continuing to offer its monthly PlayStation Plus Games in a traditional manner that is typical of the company. With that, February’s free PlayStation Plus games have been announced.

Available for free to all those with a PlayStation Plus subscription, February’s free PS Plus games are:

  • EA Sports UFC 4
  • Planet Coaster: Console Edition
  • Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep

Surprisingly, the most exciting game being offered is Planet Coaster: Console Edition. Being made available exclusively for PS5 users (though PS4 users can still redeem the game, just not play it), Planet Coaster allows you to “Surprise and delight crowds as you build the coaster park of your dreams and manage a truly living world with unparalleled attention to detail”. Featuring more than 700 objects to place wherever and however you please, Planet Coaster serves as a spiritual successor to the highly successful RollerCoaster Tycoon series.

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep is a relatively short, standalone campaign which inspired the upcoming Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which is set to release in March. In Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, players can “Smash skeletons, defeat dragons, and battle giant golems in this first Wonderlands adventure inspired by Borderlands.”

Overall, February’s PS Plus line-up is a relatively weak one, especially when compared to the likes of Xbox Game Pass. That being said, it is worth noting that PlayStation is rumoured to be wholly revamping its PS Plus service later this Spring, and so February’s disappointing line-up may be the last, as the console manufacturer inches towards the announcement of this brand new service. February’s PS Plus line-up will be available to acquire for free from the 1st of February until the 28th.

Update: In a statement sent shortly after publishing, a Gearbox representative sent over the following statement: “There is no validity to this claim, and Randy Pitchford will NOT be stepping down as the CEO of Gearbox Entertainment Company.” See our updated articled HERE.

Back in February, Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Entertainment, bringing an end to the studio's decades-long independent era. It looks like more changes are in store for the studio, as reportedly Randy Pitchford will be stepping down.

Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Entertainment in a $1.3 billion deal, broken up between a $188 million cash pay out, with an additional $175 million in Embracer Group shares. The rest of the money is tied up in incentives, pushing Gearbox to hit certain targets for major bonuses.

With all of that in place, Gearbox head, Randy Pitchford, has expanded his wealth greatly. According to a source, Pitchford is now in the process of stepping down and a replacement is being discussed. Apparently, Gearbox will be promoting from within, so a current senior executive will likely end up with a new role.

As for Pitchford, he may remain involved with Gearbox. Gearbox and Embracer Group have yet to comment on this publicly.

KitGuru Says: Given the acquisition, it would make sense for Pitchford to step down now that Gearbox ownership has changed hands.

While work on Borderlands 3 has finished and a number of key developers have left Gearbox, the studio is not leaving the Borderlands IP behind just yet. At E3 this year, Gearbox announced a spin-off title, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which will seemingly be releasing in early 2022.

As part of Take-Two's quarterly earnings call this week, the publisher revealed that Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is still on track to release in this current fiscal year, which ends on the 31st of March 2022. With that in mind, this spin-off should be releasing between January and March next year.

It is unclear how much future involvement Take-Two will have with the Borderlands IP, as the studio behind it, Gearbox, was recently acquired by Embracer Group in a deal with up to $1.3 billion.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is the latest spin-off in the Borderlands series, aiming to combine high fantasy elements and magic with the series traditional looter shooter gameplay.

With the final two expansions now out and all previous in-game events unlocked for players, it would seem that Gearbox's work on Borderlands 3 is officially done. Now, six creative leads on Borderlands are leaving Gearbox in order to team up and form an independent studio.

According to Axios, all six Gearbox employees had begun working on a new project, currently in pre-production, before deciding to leave the studio and work on an independent game. In a statement, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, said that all staff members left “on the best of terms”, he also confirmed that the group was involved in pre-production on a new project before departing.

As reported by VGC, the creatives leaving Gearbox include:

  • Christopher Brock – senior producer
  • Keith Schuler – lead mission designer
  • Scott Kester – art director
  • Paul Sage – creative director
  • Chris Strasz – UX / game feel director
  • Kevin Penrod – lead character artist

The Gearbox project that was in pre-production is separate from Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a Borderlands spin-off game with high-fantasy elements. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

E3 isn't starting for another week or so, but some of the planned surprises are already leaking. This time around, someone appears to have revealed information on a number of upcoming titles from 2K Games, including details on the next Gearbox game and a new Marvel-themed game from Firaxis.

The leak, which first appeared on Reddit and was later verified by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, starts off with some details on the next NBA 2K. According to the source, NBA 2K22 will feature retired Dallas Mavericks star, Dirk Nowitzki, as one of the cover athletes. While it wasn't specified, this is likely for the “Legend Edition” of the game, which often features retired hall-of-fame level players on the cover.

With the least exciting leak now out of the way, we can move on to the good stuff. For starters, the upcoming Gearbox game that was recently teased is set to be a Borderlands spin-off called ‘Tiny Tina's Wonderlands'. This new game will play similarly to the mainline Borderlands games and will feature “multiclass-heroes” – the reveal for this game is planned for E3.

Next up is a new game from the turn-based strategy specialists at Firaxis. The studio is said to be working on a new title, currently codenamed ‘CODA'. This is set to be a turn-based action game based on the Marvel franchise and is described specifically as “XCOM with Marvel heroes”, we may also see Hollywood talent voicing the characters.

The final part of the leak concerns a game known as ‘Codename Volt', an action game in very early development, aiming to be “Cthulhu meets Saints Row”. This could possibly be Hangar 13's upcoming game, as the studio is known to be working on an “open-world sci-fi title with supernatural elements”.

While Schreier did lend some credibility to this leak, we do not know how many of these titles will be revealed at E3.

KitGuru Says: The idea of an XCOM style Marvel game sounds incredibly appealing to me, so hopefully we'll have more official news on that during E3. What do you all think of the 2K Games leak? What are you most excited to see announced?

Gearbox has some good news today – Borderlands 3 is finally getting cross-play support. The bad news is that this won't be enabled for PlayStation, as publisher 2K Games requested that the feature be disabled for Sony's console.

Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, made the reveal on Twitter this afternoon, stating: “Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.”

Why would 2K Games not want cross play supported on PlayStation? Well the answer to that lies in the Epic Games v Apple trial. During the trial, it was revealed that Sony has a royalty system in place for cross-play titles, ensuring that PlayStation still makes money when accounts are used to purchase in-game content on other platforms. The trial only revealed that this system is in place for Fortnite, but it is possible that Sony is using this system with other game publishers as well.

If that is the root cause, then it would seem that 2K Games is looking to avoid these royalty payments by enabling Cross Play on other systems where this isn't an issue. Unfortunately, Pitchford and 2K Games have not clarified the reasoning behind this decision.

KitGuru Says: Emails revealed through the Epic v Apple trial show that Sony was indeed very against the idea of allowing cross play on PlayStation and even now, the company still appears to be pushing back on it a bit.

When Borderlands 3 first released in 2019, the game came to all modern systems, save for the Nintendo Switch. Being the first game in the series developed for the then-current gen systems, its target performance requirements were much greater than previous entries. Since then however, it would seem that optimisations have been made to the game, as Borderlands 3 looks to be heading to Nintendo’s console.

The PEGI ratings board recently rated the Borderlands 3: Director’s Cut, which includes a bunch of new content for the game. While officially only announced for systems which the original game was already released for, the PEGI ratings board have the game listed as coming to the Nintendo Switch.

This lines up with prior rumours from 2020 which claimed that Borderlands 3 was being ported to the Switch. Previous Borderlands games were ported to Nintendo’s system, in a bundle known as Borderlands: The Legendary Collection, however all of the games included were previous generation titles;  allowing for fewer compromises.

The Switch has seen many different ‘impossible’ ports come to the system, including The Witcher 3, Apex Legends, and many others – all to varying degrees of success. If Borderlands 3 is indeed coming to the Switch, it will be interesting to see just what compromises were made to get it running on Nintendo’s hybrid console – and whether the Borderlands experience has ultimately been kept intact.

Each month, Sony adds a number of games to its lineup of PlayStation Now titles. The subscription service is most similar to Xbox’s Game Pass, with titles joining (and some leaving) on a regular basis. For the month of April, subscribers can get their hands on a number of major games, including Marvel’s Avengers.

The games being added to PlayStation Now this month are:

  • Marvel’s Avengers
  • Borderlands 3
  • The Long Dark

The headlining title for this month is Marvel’s Avengers. Available until the 5th of July, subscribers can play through the entire campaign, as well as the live-service elements of the game including its DLC – the most recent of which added Hawkeye and the ‘Future Imperfect’ storyline (with future DLC including Spider-Man on PlayStation and Black Panther).

Borderlands 3 is the most recent entry in the much-enjoyed Borderlands series. Developed by Gearbox, the game received positive reviews from critics, with a major point of improvement for this game being its gunplay, giving the wacky weapons an even better feel. Borderlands 3 will be available on PlayStation Now until the 29th of September.

The Long Dark is a “thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster,” and is a permanent addition to the service.

It is worth noting that while both Borderlands 3 and Marvel’s Avengers normally offer a free upgrade path to their PS5 versions, as noted by PushSquare on PlayStation Now only the PS4 versions of these games are available. While disappointing for some PS5 players, the PS4 versions of both games still offer plenty, both graphically and content wise. Still, this limitation is unfortunate nonetheless.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this month’s line-up? Do you own a PS5? What do you think of the decision to limit the games to their PS4 versions? Let us know down below.

Recently we reported that Embracer Group has agreed to acquire Gearbox Entertainment for $1.3 Billion (depending on performance targets). At the time, we postulated as to what this would mean for the studio’s Borderlands series, which has historically been published by 2K. According to 2K Games, Borderlands titles will continue to be developed by Gearbox.

Following the announcement that Embracer Group would be acquiring Gearbox Entertainment, many fans began wondering what this meant for Borderlands, Gearbox’s most prominent franchise.

In a statement released by 2K Games, the publisher claimed that “As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organisation.”

Adding clarity to the situation, they said “The merger does not change 2K's relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.”

With Borderlands remaining a partnership between 2K Games and Gearbox, it will be interesting to see what projects come out specifically from the acquisition by Embracer Group, and whether Gearbox’s new owners will be able to spawn another franchise as successful as Borderlands has been.

Of all the games developed by Telltale Games, Tales from the Borderlands is often one of the most talked about – perhaps behind The Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us. Despite Telltale Games itself closing down (at least in its original form), it would seems that its games have some life left in them. It would appear as though TellTale’s Tales from the Borderlands is being remastered for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

According the ESRB ratings board, Tales from the Borderlands is coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As discovered by Reddit user u/telltalegamesvideos, the ESRB has the game rated for both next-gen consoles as well as PC. Interestingly, the listed release date for the game is said to be the 18th of December 2020 – which of course was not the case.

The 18th of December is the same day as listed by PEGI for the next-gen versions of Borderlands 3 (even though they actually launched in November), suggesting that this release may tie in to Borderlands 3 somehow – maybe even as part of the game’s second season pass.

Telltale Games’ titles were never the most visually stunning nor the most action heavy and as such, the decision to remaster Tales from the Borderlands is certainly a curious one. It’ll be interesting to see when this is announced, and if the game will be available to purchase standalone or if it will indeed be part of the season pass – or perhaps both.

While some developers and publishers are holding their next-gen game upgrades behind a number of paywalls, others are taking a much more pro-consumer approach. Gearbox has now announced that it’ll be providing free next-gen upgrades for Borderlands 3, bringing new improvements including 4-player split-screen and 4K 60fps gameplay.

Making the announcement, Gearbox said “We're excited to confirm that Borderlands 3 will be playable on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5, with the Series X and PS5 supporting 4K resolution at 60fps in single-player. With the power of the new consoles comes new features, including additional ways to enjoy local play: three- and four-player splitscreen will be available on the next-gen consoles.”

It's not just the next-gen versions getting improvements, as  “we've heard your two-player split screen feature requests loud and clear: vertical split screen in two-player co-op will be available in Borderlands 3's next-gen versions, and will also be added to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions via a free update.”

To those who have already played Borderlands 3, or are partway through the campaign, “existing owners of Borderlands 3 on current-gen platforms can easily transition to the next-gen versions within the same console family. If you own Borderlands 3 on Xbox One, you’ll be able to play the Xbox Series X/S version, and if you own the game on PlayStation 4, you’ll be able to play the PlayStation 5 version. Your add-on content and save files will carry over as well, so you can pick up right where you left off.”

Lastly, the studio confirmed that cross-play will be arriving some time in 2021, with more details set to be announced at a later date.

Take-Two recently reported its fiscal earnings, and unsurprisingly GTA V continues to sell massively almost 7 years after its release on PS3 and Xbox 360. The holding company announced that the most profitable piece of media in history has continued to dominate, now reaching sales of over 130 million copies. Other Take-Two franchises also reported strong sales, as Borderlands 3 hits 10 million.

As part of Take-Two’s 2020 fiscal year earnings, the company announced that it had achieved “record net blookings”. This was due in part to recurrent user spending which increased by 47% in the last quarter. The two main contributing games were unsurprisingly GTA V and NBA 2K20.

Speaking of GTA, the open-world action adventure title continues to sell incredibly well despite being almost 7 years old. New figures put GTA V at 130 million copies sold. According to available data, this makes GTA V the second best selling game of all time, only behind Minecraft (which recently surpassed 200 million copies).

Other notable Take-Two franchises have also reported strong sales. Borderlands 3 has officially surpassed 10 million copies sold, which represents a 50% increase over Borderlands 2 over the same timeframe. Borderlands 2 went on to sell over 22 million copies, so 3’s current performance is impressive indeed.

Other strong sellers include NBA 2K20, which has reportedly sold over 12 million copies. Take-Two expects that by its end-of-life, NBA 2K20 will become the company’s most successful sports title of all time.

Rockstar’s most recent release, Red Dead Redemption 2 has now surpassed 31 million copies sold – doubling that of the original game. Last but not least, The Outer Worlds has sold over 2.5 million copies – though of course that game is available through Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.

Though Take-Two expects a “light year,” it’ll certainly be interesting to see how games such as GTA V and Borderlands continue to sell. One thing’s for certain, as much as fans desire the next Grand Theft Auto, it is clear that GTA V still has a lot of life left in it.

When Borderlands 3 was first announced, it was revealed that the game would be an Epic Games Store timed-exclusive on PC. At the time, no specific date was given regarding when Steam users might be able to play – although a six month exclusivity window was insinuated. Now it has been confirmed that Borderlands 3 on Steam will release exactly 6 months after its Epic Games Store debut – arriving on the 13th of March 2020.

Making the announcement during Gearbox’s PAX East panel, the studio confirmed that Borderlands 3 would be coming to Steam on the 13th of March. In some unexpected news however, it was revealed that the launch will bring with it full crossplay with the Epic Games Store. The Steam page does not currently list what price Borderlands 3 will launch at, although the game is currently 50% off on the Epic Games Store (£24.99). In anticipation of its Steam release, Borderlands is currently hosting a franchise wide sale on the Platform, offering up to 75% off of its previous games and DLC.

Other Borderlands news to come out of its PAX East Panel was the release date of the game’s second campaign add-on, ‘Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright’. The DLC will launch on the 26th of March. Furthermore, a sneak peek was provided for the game’s 3rd DLC. Not much is known except that it will revolve around “outlaws and dinosaurs”. This 3rd campaign add-on is set to release some time in summer.

Though Borderlands 3’s Steam release is coming much later than all other platforms, there is still much discourse surrounding the looter-shooter, and with at least 3 major DLCs still on the way, Borderlands 3 seems to have no intention of being forgotten. It would appear as though we are beginning to enter the age of video game film adaptations. Shortly after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog’s live-action film, another video game is set to be adapted for film. This time, the game which will see its silver screen debut is Borderlands. Interestingly, the film is said to be directed by Eli Roth, known best for his work in the horror genre.

Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it was announced that Eli Rother would serve as Director for this film adaptation. Eli Roth is a director who is most familiar with the horror genre, having directed well known titles such as Cabin Fever, Hostel, and The Green Inferno. Speaking on the film, Roth stated “I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands, and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate — I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition.”

The film will be distributed by Lionsgate and produced by Avi and Ari Arad, who have produced a large number of Marvel films. Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group claimed that “with Eli's vision and Craig's screenplay, we believe we have cracked the code on bringing the anarchic world of Borderlands to the big screen in a big way that will be a fresh, compelling and cinematic event for moviegoers and fans of the game.”

Video game film adaptations have had a tumultuous history with some, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu being embraced by fans, while others are shunned by them. Hopefully Borderlands will land in the former, especially as Gearbox’s CEO Randy Pitchford, and Strauss Zelnik, CEO of Take-Two will serve as executive producers to the project.

KitGuru says: What do you think of a Borderlands film being in the works? Do you think Eli Roth is the right director for the Job? What’s your favorite video game film adaptation? Let us know down below.

A couple of weeks ago, Borderlands 3 was officially announced, which drummed up a ton of excitement from fans of the series. Unfortunately, the situation soured for some last week when the PC version was revealed to be a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store. To vent their frustration, a lot of Steam account holders began flooding Borderlands 1 & 2 with negative reviews on Steam, which has given us our first look at Valve's new ‘off-topic' reviews safeguard in action.

Review bombing has become fairly common in the last couple of years. If a publisher or developer angers enough players, you'll often see hundreds or even thousands of negative reviews flood in, even if the issue has nothing to do with the game being reviewed. Valve has tweaked the review system a couple of times to try and combat this. The latest change adds the new ‘off-topic' review category, which will block certain reviews from impacting the overall score of a game.

The most recent example of this is the Borderlands 2 Steam page, which has seen over 4,000 negative reviews creep up since Borderlands 3 was revealed to be an Epic Games Store exclusive. The Borderlands 1 listing was also impacted, with several hundred negative reviews posted.

Many of these reviews have been grouped into the ‘off-topic' section, meaning they won't impact the overall quality rating displayed at the top of the Steam page. As a result, Borderlands 1 and 2 both have an overall positive rating.

These off-topic reviews aren't exactly hard to spot as many of them will directly mention the Epic Games Store. None of these reviews are removed from the Steam page but the way they are categorised is distinctly different.

KitGuru Says: Review bombing is often used to get a certain message across. In this case, it is an outcry against platform exclusivity. Categorising these reviews as ‘off-topic' makes sense, as complaints against Borderlands 3 shouldn't really have any effect on the quality of past games in the series.

Last night, Gearbox took over the stage at PAX East to announce all things Borderlands. While Borderlands 3 was the highlight of the show, there were several other announcements made. For starters, Borderlands 1 is getting a remastered ‘Game of the Year' addition and beyond that, the Borderlands Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 are both getting graphical updates.

Borderlands released way back in 2009 and was a huge hit at the time. Now ten years later, we are getting a ‘Game of the Year' edition, which brings some significant enhancements to the game. For starters, the mini-map system introduced in Borderlands 2 has been added in, the inventory system has been simplified and you won't have to manually pick up health or ammo off the ground anymore.

The Shift reward system has also been added in to this new version of Borderlands, allowing players to collect keys and redeem them for new gear. Gearbox has also gone back in and added a bunch of new weapons and expanded the original game to support four player co-op. For PC owners of Borderlands 1, this will be released as a free upgrade. On the console side of things, Xbox One and PS4 owners will need to buy the new version.

Borderlands 1 isn't the only game getting an upgrade though. Gearbox has gone back and created graphical enhancements for Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. This update will make the games look better for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro owners.

On the PC side of things, you'll be able to download an Ultra HD Texture Pack for both games through Steam. The update will also add higher resolution shadows, better anti-aliasing and higher-grade Ambient Occlusion.

Borderlands 1 GOTY Edition and the Borderlands 2/Pre-Sequel texture packs will all be made available next week on the 3rd of April. Over the summer (likely at E3), we'll be hearing more about Borderlands 3 and hopefully receive a release date.

KitGuru Says: I haven't played Borderlands in years now but these free PC updates have me tempted to go back and replay them. Are any of you big fans of the Borderlands series? Will you be re-playing any of the old games once the graphical enhancements roll out?

Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel are on their way to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as part of ‘The Handsome Collection’ this month, featuring 1080p visuals, 60 frames per second gameplay and a rather large day one patch.

PlayStation 4 owners get off a little easier with an 8.3GB day one patch, while Xbox One owners will need to sit through a 16GB patch. The Xbox One patch breaks down to 3GB for Borderlands 2 and 13GB for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

borderlands

The patch size is beefed up largely thanks to the Pre-Sequel’s Claptastic Voyage DLC, which was only just finished very recently, so 2K and Gearbox were not able to get it on to the disc before launch.

There is also a long list of fixes included on both the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, according to Gearbox: “For The Handsome Collection, a large day-one update will be available giving access to Claptastic Voyage and Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2. This update will also address various bugs”.

“Although the update is large (as it's adding an entire and brand new add-on campaign), we strongly recommend that all players download it before playing The Handsome Collection.”

The Handsome Collection is due to launch tomorrow, featuring Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, which launched last October. The game will feature two-player local co-op along with online-play. All of the DLC is included for both games but Gearbox did not include Borderlands one, although it has said that if fans really want it, they will consider releasing it.

KitGuru Says: 16GB is a pretty big day one patch to sit through, Xbox Live downloads aren’t the fastest either, even with a wired connection.
