Over the last year, we've seen a sharp rise in scalping, with many utilising bots to snatch up stock for graphics cards, game consoles and everything in between before regular customers have a chance to make a purchase. This in turn leads to artificially inflated prices, with massive profit margins for scalpers. Now, US law makers are hoping to make the use of these bots illegal.

The Stopping Grinch Bots Act has been proposed by politicians in the US. The bill aims to put an end to “third-party sellers using bots to bypass security measures and manipulate online sales systems”. The use of these bots means that some in-demand items are “impossible to buy online or in stores at retail prices, exacerbating shortages caused by stressed supply chains”.

The bill aims to “create a more level playing field so everyone has a fair chance of buying popular products at reasonable prices when shopping online”. As Eurogamer points out, this bill follows in the footsteps of the BOTS Act, which was signed into law back in 2016 and made it illegal for automated bots to buy tickets for public events, and making it illegal for scalpers to then sell those tickets.

Last year following the launches of the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, UK politicians discussed introducing a similar bill, but no further progress has been made since then.

KitGuru Says: Should new laws be introduced to stomp out automated purchase bots and make life more difficult for scalpers?

Competitive CS:GO underwent a fairly major change this week, with Valve removing bots from the game. Traditionally, if someone was kicked or disconnected from a competitive match, they would be replaced by an AI bot that another member of the team could take over after dying. This feature has now been removed.

Bots in CS:GO have never been great and players have requested improvements to the AI. Rather than going in that direction though, bots are being removed from competitive (5v5) and Wingman (2v2) entirely. This brings CS:GO more in line with Rainbow Six Siege, which does not feature player-replacing AI bots in competitive modes either.

There is still some room for improvement here though. Valorant for instance provides the team with a cash boost in the event that they lose a player, giving them access to more gear and giving them a better chance of fighting back while missing a teammate. For now, Valve is not going in this direction but perhaps it is something the developers will consider later on.

There are other tweaks being made as part of this week's CS:GO patch, all of which you can find HERE.

KitGuru Says: What do you all think of this move? Bots have been a staple in Counter-Strike for many years now, so it is a little weird to see them removed.

While Microsoft's most recent bot, Tay, may have faced its share of issues after turning racist following its interactions with the Internet, the company may not have been deterred just yet as reports indicate that Microsoft might be revealing more AI bots later today at the annual Build developers conference.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Microsoft plans to come out with several prototype bots today, in the hopes of furthering the idea of ‘conversation as a platform' by allowing users to interact with chat bots using natural language.

Bots will have different functions, some will become a part of Skype to help schedule and plan things while others will read out text to you or describe facial expressions. Microsoft also wants to bring back Tay but this time without the racism or spam.

We will have to wait until the Build conference takes place in the US shortly later today to find out for sure but it seems that Microsoft isn't slowing down its AI experiments yet.

KitGuru Says: While Tay ended up having some issues at first, it does seem like an interesting experiment. AI is still fairly new technology so Microsoft still needs to work out the kinks.
