The Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe has made lemonade out of lemons; taking a universally panned trailer and turning it into a box office hit – spawning a sequel just a few short years later to even greater success. After two and a half months in cinemas, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has made over $400 million.

75 days after its launch on the 8th of April 2022, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has managed to make more than $400 million at the box office (exactly $400,015,446 as of writing). The first Sonic movie made $319,715,683 during its run in cinemas. Of course, it is worth noting that the first film suffered slightly due to the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Even so, $300+ million for a film which was originally met with mockery upon its initial trailer is impressive indeed – and Sonic 2’s current gross has blown past it with ease. As reported by Deadline, the film is still set to release in Japan and Hong Kong – two rather significant markets.

Even not accounting for these territories however, Sonic 2 is still set to overtake the Uncharted film ($401,622,829), becoming the 4th highest grossing video game film adaptation of all time, only behind Rampage ($428 million), Detective Pikachu ($433 million) and Warcraft ($439 million).

SEGA seems to have big plans for Sonic, with a third film confirmed, as well as a spin-off show starring Idris Elba as Knuckles. We will have to wait and see whether these grand plans pay off.

The Sonic the Hedgehog film has had a tumultuous development. From the near universal dislike for the original trailer, to the studio completely redesigning Sonic, leading to delays in the films release, concerns were raised that these served as a bad omen for the film itself. It would seem that hasn’t been the case, as the film has now overtaken Detective Pikachu to achieve the best domestic opening weekend record for any video game film ever.

Having released on the 14th of February, the Sonic the Hedgehog film managed to achieve a three-day opening weekend total of $57 million, which is greater than Detective Pikachu’s $54.3 million. The film is predicted to make a 4 day domestic total of $70 million. Worldwide, the film has managed to rake in over $111 million. With a budget of $85 million, the film is set to make great returns.

The success doesn't end there, as Sonic the Hedgehog represents only the third video game film to be rated at over 50% on Rotten Tomatoes – currently standing at 63% (and an audience score of 95%). This marks a positive shift in the narrative of the Sonic the Hedgehog film.

Back in April 2019, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the film. Originally set to be released in November that year, the trailer saw mass criticism mainly due to the design of sonic, which was deemed to have been in the uncanny valley. In response, Paramount opted to delay the film, in order to redesign Sonic.

Later in November, a second trailer was released, featuring the newly designed Sonic. Reception was much more positive, but concerns were raised that perhaps it was too little too late, and that people had made their minds up already. If early response is anything to go by, this hasn’t been the case.

It’s good to see that both fans and critics seem to be enjoying the film. Though it is a shame that the studio responsible for fixing the design shut down, at least their final project is being regarded as a success.

While Paramount is busy trying to fix Sonic The Hedgehog for his live action debut, the folks over at Warner Bros are sitting pretty on top of a $161m opening weekend for Detective Pikachu. The live-action Pokémon film is off to a great start, in large part thanks to the series’ worldwide reach.

Detective Pikachu was always an odd prospect. The Pokémon animated series has been going for decades, but this marks the first time that the series has ventured into live-action territory. According to box office data from Variety, Detective Pikachu made $58 million in the United States over its opening weekend, with the rest of the world bringing in an extra $103 million.

In the US, Detective Pikachu has broken the record for the highest earning opening weekend for a video game movie, beating out the likes of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Prince of Persia. Detective Pikachu also beat out domestic opening weekend results for Warcraft.

Over the course of its run, Warcraft made around $430 million at the box office worldwide, in large part thanks to China, where the movie earned over $150 million. There is still time for Detective Pikachu to catch up though, and given the film’s higher ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it went on to beat Warcraft by the end of its run.

KitGuru Says: Detective Pikachu has had a better reception than I expected. Did any of you go and see it over the weekend? What did you think of it?

Throughout 2012 we had a lot of attacks on piracy. There was the blocking of sites like The Pirate Bay, the confiscation of a nine year old girl's laptop, porn stars going after torrent users and loads more. However despite the number of anti-piracy stories, we've also had BitTorrent Inc. asking the question “Does bittorrent equal piracy?” and answering “no.” We found out that the biggest music pirates, were also some of the biggest media buyers in the world and that site blocks do not work.

Now we have some other news that counters the anti-piracy trend of 2012, the fact that even with all that downloading going on, the movie industry of America had its biggest year ever, bringing in over $10.8 (£6.8) billion to the economy. On top of that, the total number of movies premièred increased over the year before as well, to a new record of 655. This would seem to suggest that claims piracy is killing the creative industry, are misguided at best.

The Avengers
Despite being one of the most pirated movies of the year, The Avengers made over $1.5 billion at the box office

Compare this to just over a decade ago, where $8.1(£4.93) billion was the international grossing of all movies – back when piracy wasn't anywhere near as prevalent. Today that figure is over $22 (£13.5) billion.

Nobody is arguing at this point that piracy affects the movie industry, but it seems from the box office trend at least, that in most instances it's a helping hand, rather than a hindrance.

KitGuru Says: You know what is a hindrance to movie money making? Staggered release dates. If you release a movie in one part of the world and wait weeks or even months – just look at the Wreck it Ralph release schedule – to release it somewhere else, people in that second country will pirate it, because the pirated version offers something that the legitimate one does not – the ability to actually watch it.
