Although we still have 24 hours to wait until it becomes available in the EU, the second half of Double Fine's Kickstarter over-funded, point and click adventure game, Broken Age, is now available. The first part debuted way back in January 2014, with the developer then using funds from its sale to help finish the second part. Over a year later it's now been released and fans can finally find out what happens to their favourite characters.

Remember when this is what it was called?

Of course, it wouldn't be a game launch without a brand new trailer, would it?

As part of the game's official launch, Double Fine's Time Schafer took to its official backer page on Kickstarter to thank those that originally believed in the game. He also recommended people start over, since there are “so many hints and story set ups that happen in Act 1 that you need to remember for Act 2 to make sense.”

With part-2 of the game now out, Broken Age is a complete game, so it can be purchased as such on Steam and is currently on sale until the 3rd of May for £13.29.

KitGuru Says: As proud of Broken Age as I'm sure Double Fine is, I bet it's happy to see the back of the project after it's taken nearly three years longer and many millions more than expected, to finish.

Over a year since its first act was released and almost three years since the original campaign, Broken Age hasn't had the smoothest of rides to release, but now it looks like its second and final part, Broken Age Act 2, will be released in just over a month's time. On the 28th and 29th of April – depending if you live in NA or EU – Broken Age's whole story will be available to play through.

On those dates, those that already purchased the game or even just the first act, will receive the second for free. Those that don't own either however, will only be given the chance to buy the entire game in one chunk.

As well as becoming available on PC in all its glory, there will be a PS4 and PS Vita version as well.

Of course as much as it's great that the game's going to be finally available, it seems likely that the legacy of Broken Age will be its missed dates and broken promises. Initially set for a release in October of 2012 – for the entire game mind you – it took almost two years instead of the intended six months or so that was planned. On top of that though, despite receiving more than 10 times the initial requested funds, Double Fine actually ran out of money while making the game and had to use sales from the first act to fund the development of the second.

KitGuru Says: I backed Broken Age during the original campaign but have yet to play the first act – it seemed redundant without being able to finish the story. I'm sure I will play it through at some point, but with so much time passed I don't really care that much anymore. How do you guys feel about it?

Poor old Double Fine. It's not having the best of times as of late. In the past few months it's managed to annoy gamers by releasing Spacebase DF9 early and somewhat unfinished because the money just wasn't there for its continued development. It's let a dozen staff go from an unnamed project because a publisher pulled out and now the second act of the overbudget but pushed back adventure title, Broken Age, has been delayed once again.

Announced via the official Double Fine forums in a backer update (and later in a more general thread so everyone knows what's going on), admin Greg kept the tone upbeat, but still delivered the notice that Broken Age act 2 wouldn't appear until 2015.

“That means, as you may have guessed based on recent updates and documentary episodes, the Act 2 ship that will deliver the complete adventure is now looking like it will be early next year,” he said. “The game is looking really good and the team is working super fast, but we just gotta give the game the time it needs to really deliver on everything we’re hoping it will be.”

“Sorry for the delay… here's a cute construction robot to say sorry.”

In terms of the game's current status, both character perspectives in the game are going through internal alpha testing, all of the voice over has been recorded and some segments are even about to hit beta. However the final act is still incomplete in several ways, hence the push back to '15.

Of course in a climate of developers/publishers like Ubisoft and EA, it's nice to see a developer keen to push back a release date until a game is ready and not a bug filled mess. But that said, Broken Age is a game that's been in development for almost three years at this point.

Initially planned for an October 2012 release, the Kickstarter went massively over its original $400,000 budget, giving Double Fine cause too expand its original scope for the game. Unfortunately though, it fell into the trap of a lot of high-flying Kickstarters have since and pushed development too far beyond the original scope of the game, soon finding itself running out of funds. That's why Broken Age is split as it is, because without selling copies of the first half, Double Fine wouldn't have been able to fund development of the second.

KitGuru Says: How do you guys feel about another Broken Age delay? Are you just happy to see it being pushed back so that it's perfect upon release, or is it about time Double Fine gave us the game it promised in 2012?

Double Fine's Broken Age Kickstarter campaign was one of the most successful to date, generating nearly ten times its budget (of $400,000) with a total of around $3.3 million. Despite that, Tim Schafer, head of the company, has reached out to the community to explain that the game's development has run away with them a little bit and they need more money to finish it. In order to not madden the original backers by doing another Kickstarter or doing a deal with publishers, Schafer has announced that the first half of the game will go on sale on Steam Early Access.

He added that original backers will still have beta access and would get it before those buying into the game's early access, which will operate in a similar manner to ARMA III. To him, it seemed like the lesser evil than cutting the game up too drastically, even if it now will be split into two separate pieces.

Despite Schafer's candor and his unwillingness to dishonour the original Kickstarter however, this still has some gamers worried. The question on most of their lips is, how did a game that was supposed to cost just $400,000, end up not being remotely finishable with over $3 million?

What this project needs, is real leadership

Shafer's response? He designed a way bigger game than he expected it to be. “I think I just have an idea in my head about how big an adventure game should be, so it's hard for me to design one that's much smaller than Grim Fandango or Full Throttle,” he explained (via Eurogamer).

“There's just a certain amount of scope needed to create a complex puzzle space and to develop a real story. At least with my brain there is.”

The question now, will be whether Broken Age's audience is big enough to generate enough through early access to fund the second half of the game and whether in-fact, early access to a point and click adventure game is as worthwhile as many other titles with more replay value?

KitGuru Says: I backed the original campaign, one of the few games I have done and while I understand that people are annoyed, very few people complained about the Telltale business model of episodic gaming, with the previous chapter buy-ins funding the next ones. This isn't an ideal situation and perhaps better production planning should have been made, but Schafer isn't some faceless executive who doesn't care, he'll come through.

And the Kickstarter sky isn't falling people, relax. Double Fine might have had a big campaign, but it isn't Kickstarter.
