Microsoft has been making swift progress with the Windows 10 operating system on desktops since its announcement last summer but it looks like the company needs a little more time to work on the mobile variant. Microsoft has revealed that Windows 10 for mobile won't launch this summer.

Speaking at the Build conference (Via: The Verge), Windows lead, Joe Belfiore, said that “Our phone builds have not been as far along as our PC builds. We’re adapting the phone experiences later than we’re adding the PC experiences.”

Windows-10

The Windows 10 preview builds first became available on mobile back in February, while desktop users have been testing the operating system since October last year. It looks like for now, Windows 10 on desktop is coming first, while the OS will have a staggered release on other devices:

“From the device view, our main focus is to kick off the Windows 10 launch wave with a great launch on the PC. You should expect that the other devices — phone, HoloLens, Xbox, Surface Hub — will be staggered, probably not on the same date as the PC.”

The confirmation that Windows 10 will be coming to phones later in the year hints that we won't see new Lumia devices until around the same time. Aside from that though, Windows 10 for desktop is still on track for a summer release.

KitGuru Says: Given that the Windows 10 preview builds didn't start showing up on mobile until a couple of months ago, this delay isn't too surprising. However, Microsoft is aiming to unify all of its devices with this latest operating system so it seems like a simultaneous release would really be the way to go.

Microsoft has been showing off a lot of new features at its Build conference over the past 24 hours, but one of the more exciting technologies was a realtime, expanded demonstration of Hololens, the company's augmented reality headset. Utilising a camera that could show the audience what a user was seeing, we checked out multiple holographic apps, built under Windows 10 and even saw a virtual TV follow the demonstrator from room to room, so he could continue watching his show.

hololens-follow

Hololens was shown off earlier this year in a conceptual video, with lots of CGI to help us understand just what the hardware was capable of and this was simply a more realistic demonstration. On a stage modelled to look like ‘Darren's apartment, we were shown different applications like a calendar, weather tracker and Bing search tool, all of which were innovatively ‘placed' around the room. A TV was on the wall, along with a virtual photo frame of loved ones to remind him to keep in touch.

Other additions include a holographic dog that wags its tail when given attention to and a nodding robot, but perhaps one of the coolest parts of the system is tying displays to the user. As Darren makes his way around the stage, he can have the virtual TV – which he can resize to as big as he wants – follow him around, so regardless of which room in the augmented house he's in, the TV will come right along with him.

The fact that all of these apps were built within Windows 10 too, should mean that once Hololens is released, many different uses for the holographic technology will appear before long.

KitGuru Says: I wonder what will make a bigger splash in the long term, virtual, or augmented reality? What do you guys think?
