Black Friday is consistently the biggest retail shopping event of the year and while total UK physical game sales were down compared to 2018, retailers still sold through an impressive 1.3 million physical game copies last week. This also means that the UK's top ten games chart is very different this week, with some surprise games jumping back into the fold and others falling a bit lower in the rankings.

As reported by gamesindustry.biz, out of the 1.3 million games sold on Black Friday last week, approximately 500,000 of those were for the PS4, while 412,112 games were sold for Xbox One. Finally, 361,967 games were sold for the Nintendo Switch. In terms of year-on-year percentages, that is a 37% dip for PS4, a 26.7% dip for Xbox One and a 44% rise for Nintendo Switch.

Here are the top ten selling games at UK retail last week:

  1. FIFA 20
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  3. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  4. Sea of Thieves
  5. Minecraft: Xbox Edition
  6. Pokemon Sword
  7. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  8. Pokemon Shield
  9. Luigi's Mansion 3
  10. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition

As always, console bundles were a big part of this. Sea of Thieves for instance was bundled with the Xbox One S All Digital edition and there were several Xbox One S bundles containing Minecraft, which have had an impact on the top ten. PS4 console bundles mostly marketed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, although PSVR bundles also saw a rise in VR titles, with Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Skyrim VR, Resident Evil 7 and more re-entering the top 40 sales chart.

While GTA Online updates were enough to keep Grand Theft Auto V in the top ten for years, there doesn't appear to be the same level of interest in Red Dead Redemption 2, neither of which made it to the top ten last week. Surprisingly, Anthem clawed its way back into the top 40 thanks to a 246% sales increase, while Marvel's Spider-Man just missed out on another top-ten listing with a 691% sales bump.

KitGuru Says: We don't have final hardware sales numbers for last week but early indications seem to point towards the Xbox One S All Digital getting a big boost this year. Did any of you pick up some new games or a console last week?

From an artificial holiday with zero impact in the UK five years ago, Black Friday has becomes a huge focus for technology retailers across the globe. Here in the UK, we have a history of starting sales early. The January sales 2016 will happen at the end of 2015, and the Boxing Day deals will no doubt go live before Christmas Day. Black Friday is no different. We've just done a quick scan of the major retailers and KitGuru can report that Overclockers has definitely jumped the gun.

While having a system price move from £1,500 to £1,400 is certainly a £100 discount, there are certain sweet spots in retail science.

Under £500 is one of the big ones, with consumers being driven to action quicker as the price falls. When we apply discounts to products under£200 or (more so) under £100, then retailers generally get a much faster reaction – especially if stock is limited.

Black-Friday-KitGuru

Here's a few of the deals we found on OcUK, which (if any) would be most likely to make you react?

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 kit down from £129.95 to £89.99
  • 512GB SanDisk X300 Enterprise Class SSD down from £149.99 to £99.95
  • Cooler Master Cosmos SE Chassis down from £144.95 to £109.99
  • Asus GTX970 Turbo OC 4GB down from £269.99 to £229.99
  • DeepCool Tristellar SW Mini-ITX Gaming Chassis down from £369.95 to £269.99
  • 8GB VTX3D 390X Triple Fan OC down from £349.99 to £289.99
  • Asus PB287Q 28″ 4K 60Hz 1ms Gaming Monitor down from £389.99 to £309.95
  • Intel Core i7 5930K down from £469.99 to £389.99
  • 4GB Sapphire Nano down from £499.99 to £409.99
  • MSI GE62 2QD-481 Gaming Laptop down from £999.95 to £899.99
  • MSI GT72-2QE Dominator Pro Gaming Laptop down from £1,799.99 to £1,649.99

KitGuru says: If there was ever a good day to build your own desktop, upgrade your existing rig or get a new gaming laptop, Black Friday Thursday seems to be the one.

The end of the year is approaching, which means lots of video game releases in the lead up to Christmas. The holiday season also tends to be the time for deals and console bundles, of which Microsoft has announced quite a few. Anyone looking to buy an Xbox One this Christmas will have quite a few options to choose from, with a Fallout 4 bundle, a Gears of War bundle and a Halo 5 bundle on the way.

The Fallout 4 Xbox One bundle contains a 1TB console and a digital copy of the game for £369.99, though this is exclusive to GAME in the UK. Those looking forward to Halo 5 this month will be able to grab the Halo bundle, featuring a themed 1TB console and a copy of the game, along with 14 REQ packs for the Warzone multiplayer mode. The Halo 5 bundle will cost £399.99.

Xbox-One-600-x-300

There is also a Gears of War bundle, which comes with a 500GB Xbox One, a copy of Gears of War Ultimate Edition and an exclusive multiplayer skin. This one is on the cheaper side, coming in at £309.99. Aside from those three headlining bundles, there are a few others, including a Forza 6 bundle including a 1TB console and a copy of the game for £369.99. There are two FIFA bundles, a 500GB one at £309.99 and a 1TB one at £369.99.

The final bundle is one we have spoken about before- it's the Elite Bundle, featuring a 1TB SSHD Xbox One and one of the new highly customizable Elite controllers.

KitGuru Says: This is a big holiday season for Microsoft with Tomb Raider and Halo 5: Guardians coming out in the next six weeks. The first party line-up for the Xbox One is particularly strong this year, are any of you planning on picking up an Xbox One? I got one myself last year and I've been getting more use out of it than I thought I would, having recently gone through the Master Chief Collection and Gears of War with some friends.

The worst thing about shopping on Black Friday is the fear of being trampled to death by an army of bargain hunters. Fortunately though, for us geeks, we can usually find all of the best deals online and avoid the drama. Overclockers UK has launched its own Black Friday sale, joining a growing list of UK retailers offering discounts ahead of the fateful day.

The sale kicked off this afternoon with a preliminary round of deals on graphics cards, monitors and peripherals. We won't recite the whole list here but there are some noteworthy highlights worth mentioning. From today, you can pick up an XFX AMD R9 295X2 dual GPU for just £479.99, which is a great price considering that they were going for around £1000 just a few months ago.

You can also find R9 290X cards for as low as £209.99 and Nvidia GTX 970s for as low as £240.

Black Friday

If you're in the market for a new monitor then there are some pretty good deals on 1440p and 4K panels. The popular Samsung U28D590 28″ 4K monitor is going for £359.99 while LG's 27MB85Z-B 27″ ColourPrime professional 1440 IPS monitor is £275, down from its usual £539.99 price point.

However, there will be more on offer tomorrow, including Nvidia's new Shield tablet Black Friday bundle, which includes a free controller and the Greenbox set of games (Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode One and Portal). There will also be a massive component bundle, featuring an Intel Core i7 4790K and a GTX 780Ti so be on the lookout for that.

You can browse through the list of Black Friday sales items, HERE. Remember to check back tomorrow for more.

Jack and Coke, Cheese and Onion, Thelma and Louise. Some things are just better in combination with each other. The cooks down at Aria have been analysing what it is that customers actually buy (as opposed to what combinations you think they will be interested in) and created a new menu. KitGuru sits down at the chef's table to see if the ingredients are correct.

Anyone who has lost data would be tempted by a pair of drives. RAID 1 might save your data in dire circumstances. How often do you upgrade your mouse or keyboard and wish that you'd just changed both? Looking at all of KitGuru Labs testing for high end graphics, you just KNOW that buying 2 or more monitors makes sense.

This is the kind of logic that Aria has applied – and some of the new combos look interesting. For example, we were highlighting the £119 single 1TB Samsung SpinPoint drive earlier in the year, but you can now buy a pair of them for just £117.

The same goes for a pair of Samsung HD SyncMaster monitors, which have been paired for less than £200.

In light of Sapphire's brand new 7970 6GB Toxic Edition, if nVidia fanbois want to keep up – then they may well be tempted by the idea of a pair of MSI GTX670 cards at £589.

The concept has been extended across to bundles and DIY systems. For example, all the kit you need to make a turbo charged 2500k system is just £449.

You can get a full listing of combos from here and systems from here.

Tha chaps and chapesses at Aria are looking to stimulate your pallet

KitGuru says: It's good to see resellers thinking about what their customers want most. While it is possible to create a killer 2500k rig for £700 – not everyone has that kind of money spare – so a complete kit for just £449 makes sense. We're looking forward to seeing more bundle deals from Aria and other resellers this summer.

Once upon a time, mainstream stores carried computers and almost no one sold decent components. Then the direct model arrived and systems were sold online. Smaller stores began to stock components locally and every town had at least one ‘cool shop' with a few boxes of the latest kit, nestled among the dusty shelves. One a recent trip to one of the bigger stores in London, KitGuru discovered a different trend. Here's what we found with an Oyster card.

With John Lewis winning IT retailer of the year, year-after-year, the launch of Best Buy and Dixons Stores Group's statement of intent in opening even more PC World mega stores – the battle to sell you complete systems (be they netbook, notebook, PC or whatever) is well and truly under way.

Online competition to sell components has never been fiercer, with a load of multi-million pound turnover companies slugging it out at every opportunity – from Dabs/BT Store and Overclockers, to Scan and eBuyer.

But there's a new trend.

While some components sold will be used for repair and upgrade, a solid number are for customised new builds. Hardcore enthusiasts, professionals, noobs and wannabes all like the idea of investigating the various components on major technology sites like KitGuru, then creating their own special blend.

OK. All well and good. But where's the ‘new' bit?

Bundles.

White bag on the counter, snap snap, and the photography's done. Buying an O/C bundle is just as easy.

Walk into YOYOTech in Windmill Street, just off London's famous Tottenham Court Road, and you will see straight away how much of the shelf space has been taken over by bundles. It's quite virus-like actually. Encouraged by an ultra-violet glow, these special bundles are spreading across the back wall and beyond.

What's different about these bundles is that they are (a) on the shelf – ready to go, (b) pre-built, including the cooling solution and memory, (c) pre-clocked to a stable speed and (d) guaranteed by the store itself for 12 months.

We'll say that again. The bundles are guaranteed at the speed sold. No messing with BIOSes and clocks here. If you know what hardware you want and you know what speed you need – just pick up the bundle and away you go. Could it be easier?

Sure, it's not possible to offer every variation. Even if there were only 4 cool CPUs, 4 useful coolers, half a dozen mainboards and the same number of memory module options – you'd already have 4 x 4 x 6 x 6 =576 variations.

What the YOYOTech engineers have done is taken the most likely combinations – based on what is actually selling in store – and pre-built those onto the shelves, ready to go.

Does it take all the fun out of the building process?  Not really. With Zardon's excellent, in-depth articles on clocking processors like the 2500/2600k and the latest Phenom II X6 chips, anyone can simply open KitGuru and alter their BIOS to match (how many publications give you the same level of detail in their overclocking features?  Not many!).

Having someone else mess with the clocks and guarantee that they flipped the right bits?  Now that's just taken all the hassle out of your hands and made you the manager-of-the-build-process rather than a risk-running-wrench-monkey.

Quite a few companies have offered bundle solutions online, but seeing them on a shelf – next to all of the graphic cards and chassis – makes the selection process quite a bit easier. For example, you immediately know that the cooler chosen will not bump into the memory selected. Always a possibility with modules like the Kingston HyperX T1 units – with oversized fins.

With a pre-built bundle, and a store full of graphic cards and cases, you can be sure that it all fits together – before you take it home. Useful stuff.

YOYOTech is based near Goodge Street station (Northern Line) in the centre of London, but it's also close to Tottenham Court Road (Central Line) and only 2 stops along from Euston Station. Essentially, if you live inside the M25, then you can probably get to Tottenham Court Road in under 30 minutes. But how can you be sure that, when you turn up, the O/C bundle you want – will be sitting there waiting on the shelf?

Well, we spoke with a friendly chap called Ravi on the phone and he told us that the web site shows ‘live stock'. So what you see online is what's on the shelf in store. He also said that they have a reserve and collect system, where you can hold the product in store until you get there – so you are 100% guaranteed that what you need is sitting there when you arrive. Simples.

Looking through the site, overclocked bundles seem to start around £275 and the Intel Core i7 2600k offers start around £509.

.

Pro-built overclocking bundles, wall to wall. Well played YOYOTech. We love the fresh produce approach.

KitGuru says: We'd love to hear about other stores in the UK that are doing what YOYOTech is doing – pre-building overclocked bundles on the shelf – ready to take away. If you have a favourite local store (especially if it is outside London and definitely outside the UK), then please let us know and we will do our best to check it out and promote it as appropriate.
