Sony announced earlier this week that it would be laying off hundreds of staff members across the PlayStation business, including some team members at esteemed studios like Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games. With Guerrilla being hit, many were wondering if the long in-development Horizon multiplayer game had been cancelled, but it seems this is not the case.

Guerrilla Games has been experimenting with the idea of Horizon multiplayer since the franchise's inception. Code for multiplayer was found in both Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. However, these were small-scale experiments, rather than intended for release. Separately, Guerrilla Games has had another team working on a standalone Horizon multiplayer game, and more recently, a deal between Sony and NCSoft was forged, a partnership that is believed to involve a Horizon MMO.

Given that many other games have been cancelled in recent months due to layoffs, many wondered if Guerrilla Games' Horizon multiplayer game had suffered the same fate as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Factions, but it seems that is not the case. Veteran games industry reporter, Jason Schreier, responded to questions about the project this week, stating that the multiplayer game has not been cancelled.

That doesn't mean plans won't change in the future, after all, Naughty Dog's standalone TLOU multiplayer game was in development for about four years before finally being scrapped. For now though, Horizon multiplayer is still in the works.

KitGuru Says: A Horizon multiplayer game could be good but I do worry that it is going to be a somewhat standard survival affair, albeit with an interesting world and lore. We've yet to see anything of the game officially though, so we'll have to hang tight for more details.

This week as part of a round of layoffs, closures and cancellations, EA has decided to no longer move forward with Respawn's Star Wars shooter. While not officially announced, recent leaks suggested that the game would focus on a Mandalorian bounty hunter, potentially bringing the Star Wars 1313 dream back to life.

Recent leaks claimed that Respawn's first-person shooter, set in the Star Wars universe, would star a Mandalorian bounty hunter, giving players access to all the gadgets you would expect, including a grapple hook, jet pack for dodging, a wrist rocket and more. The game was said to be very fast-paced, but it would also have been a linear game, structured with a set of levels, rather than attempting an open world.

Now, Respawn's Mandalorian game won't see the light of day, although as with many other cancelled projects, new details and test footage may well leak out now that the game is no longer going ahead.

The cancellation is part of EA's effort to drop ‘licensed' games entirely from its portfolio, something EA CEO, Andrew Wilson, has expressed interest in before, in large part due to the costs and revenue shares associated with licensed games. This new shift comes at a pretty bad time, as Respawn had multiple Star Wars projects in the works, and other studios were beginning work on new Marvel games, including a Black Panther game, and an Iron Man game. The future of these projects is uncertain at this time.

KitGuru Says: This cancellation is probably the one that disappoints me the most. Single-player first-person shooter games are still popular. Yes, DOOM might not sell as many copies as Call of Duty, but there is still plenty of room for a solid FPS campaign in today's industry. Better yet, Respawn's new shooter would have had the weight of the Star Wars license behind it and likely would have benefitted from a solid round of hype ahead of release, as Respawn is basically the only studio that has proven itself capable of making good Star Wars games in the modern era.

First shown off all the way back in 2013, Media Molecule’s Dreams served as one of the most interesting first-party PlayStation titles in recent memory. The community-driven game creation toolkit had seen a great deal of post-launch support following Dreams’ release in early 2020. Unfortunately, in April of last year it was announced that support for the game was ending – with reports now claiming that a PS5 and PC version was planned prior to its cancellation.

As claimed by known console hacker and dataminer Lance McDonald (and reported by GameInfinitus), prior to its end-of-life, a PC port of Media Molecule’s Dreams was in the works. Additionally, a PS5 upgrade was also planned, and was said to come with mouse and keyboard support alongside some form of ray-tracing.

Apparently, these ports were quite far along in development, with the PC version in particular said to have “already been finished”. According to McDonald, both ports were unfortunately cancelled following a round of lay-offs at Media Molecule last year – meaning Dreams will forever remain gimped by its PS4/PSVR1 limitations.

As a massive fan of Media Molecule and Dreams in particular, the reveal that a PS5 and PC version was in the works but ultimately cancelled stings quite a bit. Unfortunately, Dreams will never realise its true potential.

Blizzard has recently cancelled one of its largest projects, the survival game codenamed Odyssey. The announcement came as part of a reorganisation of Microsoft's game studios, resulting in 1,900 layoffs, or 8% of the gaming division's workforce.

According to Bloomberg, the game was designed as a survival game similar to Minecraft and Rust, but aiming to be more polished and with fewer bugs. The game was developed for almost six years, outlasting many previous Blizzard incubation projects. Blizzard spokesman Andrew Reynolds said in a statement that the game's development had ended to reroute resources to other projects that have more potential, including new projects Blizzard has in its early stages.

Blizzard has largely focused on its established IPs (Warcraft and Diablo). However, during Odyssey's development, the company made a significant investment, assembling a team of more than 100 people to work on the game. Even so, reported technical challenges with the engine made developing such an ambitious title very difficult.

Initially developed using Unreal Engine, Blizzard officials chose to switch to Synapse, an internal engine that the corporation had initially built for mobile games and envisioned as something that could be used across other projects. Reportedly, switching to Synapse was mooted because this engine would support up to 100 players. However, development using Blizzard's engine was going slowly, leading Odyssey's artists to keep using Unreal Engine, knowing their work would be scrapped later.

The Microsoft deal was finalised, and several Blizzard employees hoped they could return to Unreal Engine rather than attempt to complete the game on Synapse. Despite the hurdles, Odyssey looked to be making progress, and people who played early versions of the game appreciated it and saw a lot of commercial potential for a survival game that met Blizzard's quality standards. Nonetheless, Odyssey remained years away from completion. Blizzard planned to extend the team to hundreds of people to meet the 2026 release date, but developers thought it was too optimistic. In the end, the game was cancelled.

While Halo Infinite may not have been the grand revival that Microsoft were hoping for the franchise, series co-developer Certain Affinity looked to be prepping to offer their own take on the franchise with a battle royale game. Though never officially announced, the long-in-development title has now reportedly been cancelled.

According to trusted leaker Shpeshal_Nick, Project Tatanka (as it was known) has been cancelled, with the industry insider – alongside his co-hosts –  making the claim via their XboxEra podcast.

For the uninitiated, Project Tatanka was being developed by Halo series co-developer Certain Affinity, with work on the game beginning as far back as 2020. Though it was never officially announced, its existence was all-but-confirmed multiple times over the years by the studio itself.

Even at the time of the initial leak, the battle royale genre was far past its peak, and while the genre’s popularity has ebbed and flowed since it is possible that Microsoft deemed a BR game tied to Hale Infinite specifically to be unsustainable.

With Project Tatanka now no longer happening, the future for Halo is even less certain. Of course, another Halo game is inevitably on its way, but what exactly it will be is a mystery for now.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a fan favourite title and we've been hoping for a return to the KOTOR series for a long time now. It looked like we were finally going to get exactly that when Knights of the Old Republic Remake was announced back in 2021. However, it would appear that the game may have been quietly cancelled.

The Knights of the Old Republic Remake was announced by Aspyr with a short teaser trailer during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021. In 2022, it was confirmed that Aspyr is no longer leading development on the project, with Embracer Group moving it over to Saber Interactive. Now amidst restructuring efforts and lay-offs at Embracer Group's owned studios, it would seem that the KOTOR remake has now been cancelled.

Fans spotted that the original teaser trailer, as well as social media posts advertising the game, have been quietly hidden from public view this week. Neither Sony nor Embracer Group have issued a statement yet but with the remake's announcement seemingly being wiped from the web, rumours of the game's cancellation are now circulating.

The KOTOR Remake was already having a somewhat troubled development. While Aspyr was chosen to lead the project due to past experience working on versions of the KOTOR titles, there was an apparent disagreement somewhere along the way, leading to Aspyr being booted off of the remake, transferring the development over to Saber Interactive.

Not helping matters is Embracer's current financial situation, which has taken an ugly turn this year, leading to lots of lay-offs and some studio closures.

SEGA appears to be going through a bit of a shake-up, as the publisher has cancelled a number of projects. The biggest cancellation impacts Creative Assembly's upcoming shooter, Hyenas, but several unannounced projects have also been axed.

In an investor note published this week, Sega warned shareholders that it expects to record a loss for the financial year, as the publisher faces lower profits in Europe. Now, Sega is undergoing “structural reforms aimed at increasing efficiency”. This means exactly what you would expect, project cancellations and lay-offs.

Hyenas was first announced last summer and a new trailer was released in mid-August, seemingly indicating that the game is progressing towards release. Earlier this year, Sega labelled Hyenas as a challenging title and now, it would seem they no longer believe the project is worth the investment to see through to the finish line.

As a result of the cancellation, a source speaking with IGN claimed that the entire Hyenas team at Creative Assembly faces redundancy. However, lay-offs will likely impact other parts of the company as well. It is possible that Sega is planning to shave off employee counts at some of its other studios too so we should hear more in the months ahead.

An Intel roadmap for 2023 and beyond has been leaked, revealing updates for the 18th week of the year, from May 1st to May 7th. Although most of it is covered, the updated roadmap confirms the cancellation of a specific Meteor Lake-S processor for the desktop we've heard about in previous leaks.

For quite some time, there have been speculations about the cancellation of the Meteor Lake-S chip with 6P+8E cores, with rumours pointing to a replacement in the form of an Arrow Lake die with the same configuration. If the updated roadmap shared by @OneRaichu is accurate, it validates those earlier rumours.

Unfortunately, the remaining details on the roadmap are concealed. As such, there are still unanswered questions, adding to the confusion surrounding the next-generation Core series. If the roadmap details weren't hidden between 2023 and 2026, it could've provided valuable insights into Intel's plans for the next few years.

Besides the cancelled Meteor Lake-S part, rumours circulated about Intel potentially preparing a 6P+16E Meteor Lake chip, which would be offered alongside the Arrow Lake-S chip featuring an 8P+16E setup. While the upcoming Core series may not introduce a significant increase in core count compared to Raptor Lake, there will be updates to the core design with a hybrid architecture called Lion Cove and Skymont.

Back when Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 in 2019, many of us were confused as to why a sequel was necessary. Part of the reasoning on Blizzard's end was to include a PvE campaign, with hero talent trees and a whole new co-op narrative to play through. Now less than a year on from Overwatch 2's launch, plans for the campaign mode have been cancelled.

Overwatch 2 will no longer get the PvE content fans had been promised all those years ago. Blizzard said that development on the PvE experience “hasn't made the progress” they were hoping for, adding that there was “no end in sight” for the development timeline. Ultimately, Blizzard decided that the PvE mode as originally planned was taking too many resources away from the live game and as a result, it has been cancelled.

While the original PvE campaign with customisable hero talents and other extras is no longer coming, Blizzard has said that PvE content will still arrive in Overwatch. A number of missions have already been created and Blizzard plans to release them as singular levels as part of Overwatch 2's regular seasonal content.

The first story missions will be available starting with Season 6, which begins in August. It is unclear if these missions will still be available to play in future seasons, or if they'll be removed and replaced with new missions over time, but the latter seems more likely.

KitGuru Says: The Overwatch hero cinematics and animated shorts were always hugely successful for Blizzard. It is clear that a lot of Overwatch fans do want story content, which makes the cancellation of the campaign very disappointing. Still, we will be getting story missions in some form, we'll just have to wait and see how regularly Blizzard is able to push out that type of content, in addition to continued work on the main PvP modes.

2023 was meant to represent the triumphant return of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, following its fumblings over the past few years. The parties in charge of E3 (the ESA) even brought in the organisation experts ReedPop to ensure that this year’s event goes off without a hitch, Unfortunately, it seems as though E3 2023 might in fact be cancelled as more and more publishers pull out from the upcoming expo.

According to IGN, both SEGA and Tencent have pulled out of E3, marking only the latest in a long line of non-attendees which includes the likes of Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Ubisoft. In the wake of these rumours, industry insider Andy Robinson of VGC took to Twitter to claim that this year’s E3 may not end up happening at all, saying:

“It's often tough to separate the facts from the conjecture on E3, but unsurprisingly I'm really not hearing good things. Would not be surprised at all if it's called off this week – but I hope it isn't. I feel so sorry for those behind it who did everything asked of them.”

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which saw pretty much all events cancelled, many publishers opted to approach their game announcements by offering their own digital showcases. This seems to have worked out, with many companies realising that they do not need to splash out a great deal of money in order to secure some time in the spotlight at E3. This, alongside mismanagement is what led to E3 being in its current predicament.

Due to its waning relevance, the ESA partnered with organisational veterans ReedPop (known for their work on PAX), bringing down stall prices and doing what they can to return E3 to its former glory. Unfortunately, it seems this was still not enough to bring back publishers.

E3 remains a huge name in gaming and its legacy cannot be denied. It is entirely possible that one day E3 will return to its highs of yesteryears – but 2023 is seemingly not that year.

Intel's 2023 roadmap showed Meteor Lake desktop chips would come in late 2023, but that might no longer be the case. As per the latest reports, the rumoured Raptor Lake refresh will replace the promised Meteor Lake-S CPUs.

At CES 2023, Intel will reportedly introduce the 13th Gen Core non-K desktop chips and tell us more about the Core i9-13900KS. The leaked Intel roadmap for 2023 also shows that Raptor Lake chips will be refreshed later in the year (Q3 2023), with no mention of any Meteor Lake-S desktop CPUs.

As for why Meteor Lake-S is absent from the roadmap, it could be due to the architecture having been cancelled. That's according to @OneRaichu (via HotHardware), who had previously accurately reported Intel release plans and specs for some of its products. With Meteor Lake-S's reported cancellation, one could only assume the Raptor Lake refresh will act as a replacement.

What's left unanswered is why Intel would avoid releasing Meteor Lake-S. One could assume that the architecture might not have met some performance targets. Still, there's a chance we'll see Meteor Lake chips for laptops.

KitGuru says: If Intel launches a Raptor Lake refresh, then there is a good chance they will run on the LGA1700 socket, so current-gen CPU owners could upgrade without switching motherboards.

It has been years since Ubisoft announced the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake and has seemingly been stuck in development hell since. It has been a long time since the last significant update on the game, but Ubisoft is now speaking out to let everybody know that it is not cancelled.

Originally planned to release in early 2020, the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake was initially delayed so the development team could address feedback regarding the art style and graphics shown in the reveal trailer. Eventually, Ubisoft moved the project away from its Pune and Mumbai studios and put Ubisoft Montreal in charge of development.

In an FAQ published this week, Ubisoft confirms that the remake is not cancelled. However, the publisher also does not have any meaningful announcements to make at this time, so there does not seem to be a new release date in sight yet. Due to the lack of release date, pre-orders for the game have been cancelled. Ubisoft will reopen pre-orders when the game has a release date.

The post also confirms that The Sands of Time will be the only title getting a remake. Currently, there are no plans to remake the other games.

KitGuru Says: From the sounds of it, this remake won't be coming within the next 12 months. It seemed Ubisoft underestimated the quality bar expected from a remake over a remaster, which has led to a much longer and more expensive development cycle.

While we have started to see a surge in the number of adaptations based on various video game properties in recent years, the Resident Evil franchise has always released a whole host of non-video game related media – most recently of which was the Netflix Original live-action Resident Evil show. Unfortunately for fans, Netflix will not be greenlighting a second season.

In an exclusive report by Deadline, it was revealed that the recently-released Resident Evil show – which launched on Netflix back in July – would not be getting a second season due to its less-than-stellar “cost vs. viewing” metrics.

According to Deadline, Resident Evil managed to nab 72.7 million hours of viewing by subscribers during its first week. This stayed steady during its second week, with 73.3 million hours watched; though the service’s shows typically see a bump in week two due to word of mouth, and so Resident Evil failing to grow during its second week was a bad sign.

This coupled with the show’s underwhelming critical and fan responses meant that this announcement was not too surprising – though for the few who did enjoy it, this news is undoubtedly somewhat disappointing.

With how big the Resident Evil franchise is, and how previous adaptations have seen great commercial success, it is safe to say that the franchise will likely get another stab at being adapted into a TV show eventually – just perhaps not by Netflix.

A couple of years ago following Diablo Immortal's BlizzCon reveal, we learned that Blizzard was also working on a number of other mobile games, several of which were set in the Warcraft universe. This year, one of these games was officially announced, but Blizzard seems to be scrapping two other projects that have been long in the works.

According to sources speaking with Bloomberg, Blizzard has cancelled two unannounced Warcraft mobile games this year. One, codenamed ‘Neptune', was set to be a new Warcraft MMO for mobile and had been in development for over three years already. The project shared many similarities with WoW and apparently started off as a direct port before evolving into its own spin-off set in the same universe.

Orbis, a game inspired by Pokémon Go, had been in development for over 4 years before being cancelled earlier this year.

According to the report, these titles were scrapped due to a business dispute between Activision Blizzard and its mobile partner, NetEase. The two companies disagreed over terms of their deal and ultimately decided to cancel these projects, which had long been in development and already had substantial investment poured into them.

Blizzard began working on mobile games years ago with the goal of boosting revenues between major releases for its pillar franchises. However, this initiative has not been very successful so far, resulting in more cancelled projects than released ones. Still, things are starting to turn around. Diablo Immortal launched in June and has already made $100 million in revenue. Later this year, Warcraft Arclight Rumble will also release.

KitGuru Says: I'm sure a lot of long-time Blizzard fans are more relieved about this than disappointed. With that said, Neptune did sound like it could have been interesting – perhaps now that the project is cancelled, some developers will shed some extra light on what the game was.

Ubisoft held its quarterly earnings report this week, revealing multiple delays and cancellations. Not only has the upcoming Avatar game been delayed, but four projects have been cancelled – Ghost Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR and two unannounced projects.

As reported by VGC, during the earnings call, Ubisoft confirmed that its planned Splinter Cell VR game has been cancelled. Additionally, Ghost Recon's free to play battle royale spin-off, Frontline, has also been scrapped. Out of the two cancellations, Splinter Cell VR might be the most surprising, as stealth gameplay can work very well in a VR format. As for Ghost Recon Frontline, that game was panned by fans when it was first announced, so its cancellation was perhaps the best move.

The other two projects that Ubisoft cancelled were both unannounced games, so we have no further details at this time, but given Ubisoft's history with leaks, we imagine the story will come out at some point.

Ubisoft has also delayed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which was set to be its biggest holiday season release. Still, Ubisoft should have a good Q4, thanks to Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Skull and Bones and potentially Assassin's Creed Rift.

Late last year, it was confirmed that Daybreak Games had begun working on a new Marvel MMO as one of several new projects currently in development. Just six months later, the game has been cancelled after a period of pre-production. Based on details revealed following the cancellation, the game would have taken some art-style inspiration from Into the Spider-Verse.

Daybreak's Marvel MMO has officially been cancelled, just over half a year after being announced to investors. Initially, Daybreak parent company, EG7, planned to invest roughly $50 million USD in the project over the next three years, but after a period of pre-production, the company has decided to scrap those plans due to “development risk profile, size of investment, and the long-term product portfolio strategy of the group”.

While we won't get the chance to play this game, some of the team's plans for it have surfaced following the cancellation. Stylistically, the game would take inspiration from Into the Spider-Verse, with lots of bright colours and contrast, rather than a more realistic look.

According to screenshots posted by Ramiro Galan, a designer that worked on the game, the MMO would have featured four key factions for players to join – X-Men, Avengers, Shield and the Fantastic Four. Players can then customise their characters and choose their powers. There would also be an outfit system in place, with different outfits providing buffs to certain stats.

All of the screenshots appear to be concept art, rather than an actual build of the game running. It is unclear how far the game got into development, but given the timetable from announcement to cancellation, it won't have made it beyond pre-production.

KitGuru Says: A Marvel MMO was always going to be a huge task, and it sounds like executives were spooked out of the project rather quickly, which is unfortunate because this could have been interesting. Particularly if the game could tap into some of that City of Heroes nostalgia.

2021 was supposed to be a great year for Elite Dangerous across all platforms thanks to the Odyssey expansion. Unfortunately, this extra content arrived in a rough state on PC, leading to Frontier delaying the release on consoles so it could focus on fixing the game. Now almost a year later, Frontier has decided to scrap Elite Dangerous for consoles entirely.

Frontier Developments will no longer be creating new content for Elite Dangerous on consoles and the Odyssey expansion will no longer be coming to Xbox and PlayStation. Moving forward, all efforts will be focused on the PC version. This news comes as a shock to many who have continued playing the game on consoles and have been waiting for an update on the Odyssey expansion.

“Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase”, Frontier head, David Braben, wrote in a blog post.

Elite Dangerous will still be playable on consoles with all current content available in the game. But anything from Odyssey onwards will be exclusive to PC.

Now, Nvidia is reportedly planning to launch its new RTX 30 series flagship on the 29th of March, and the previously rumoured 16GB RTX 3070 Ti has been scrapped.

According to a source posting on Chiphell (via Hardware Times), the delay in the RTX 3090 Ti was due to a memory problem. Specifics aren't confirmed, but it could be related to Nvidia using 12x 2GB modules instead of 24x 1GB modules (on both sides of the PCB), as used in the original RTX 3090.

It is also claimed that the RTX 3090 Ti will now be launching on Tuesday the 29th of March. Meanwhile, the previously rumoured RTX 3070 Ti with 16GB of memory has also been scrapped, although the reason for this decision is unclear at this time.

KitGuru says: Although these are just rumours, the cancellation of the RTX 3070 Ti seems reasonable. This GPU was supposed to rival Intel desktop GPUs, but as they are only coming out in Q2 2022, its lifespan would be relatively short, as the RTX 40 series is planned for later this year.

Today, the ESA has announced that E3 will be an all-digital event once again this year, cancelling in-person plans for the third year in a row. As was the case in the previous two years, concerns around COVID-19 have led to the cancellation for 2022.

In a statement issued this week, the ESA confirmed that E3 2022 will not be held in-person due to “ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees”.

E3 was already going through changes prior to the pandemic, with plans to make the event more fan-centric with a decreased focus on business and press-only meetings. Due the pandemic though, the event has had to completely shift again towards an all-digital showcase, with various publishers holding streams alongside E3 to announce new games.

The ESA has not revealed further details for E3 2022 at this time, but promises to share more soon. In the months to come, we'll get confirmation on which publishers will be hosting their announcements as part of E3, while others like EA and Sony will hold their own streams over the summer, separated from the ESA's plans.

KitGuru Says: It seems E3 will not be returning to its normal format this year after all, which is a shame. Still, we should get some exciting announcement streams from most publishers, including Xbox, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Devolver Digital and others.

The video games industry is a rather secretive place, with many developers, publishers and more keeping all of their projects close to their chest. While this does mean that unannounced games get cancelled all the time at various stages of development, not many of them would have had as much money pumped into them as the latest cancellation by Take-Two – which invested $50 million into a game before cancelling it.

As part of Take-Two Interactive’s Q2 FY2022 financial report, the video game holding company posted a $53 Million USD write-off, claiming it to be ”related to the Company's decision not to proceed with further development of an unannounced title in its pipeline.”

It is likely that we will never find out what this game is (though according to Kotaku it was coming from Mafia 3's studio ‘Hangar 13′), however considering it had already had more than $50 million invested into it, it was likely to have been a rather large-scale project. For context, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt cost just north of $80 Million USD to make – and this includes the marketing costs (though of course it is worth pointing out that it was reported that CDPR allegedly underpaid their staff).

Interestingly, this isn't the biggest game to get cancelled after so much money had already been invested into it. Microsoft’s ill-fated Halo MMO and Fable Legends both sank much more into development costs ($108M and $81M respectively) before ultimately being cancelled. Of course, both of these titles were to be published by Microsoft – a company worth $2.44 Trillion USD – and so in comparison, this most recent cancellation is likely viewed as a much bigger deal by Take-Two.

Take-Two Interactive owns dozens of popular IPs, from BioShock to Borderlands to GTA; Max Payne; Mafia and more, meaning that while it could be possible to make a guess as to which franchise this cancelled game hailed from, it is mostly a fruitless endeavour. Evenso, hopefully the game wasn’t BioShock 4.

KitGuru says: What game do you think it was? Which game do you hope it WASN’T? Are video games becoming too expensive to develop? Let us know down below.

After multiple delays and staff turnover, Paradox made the decision to boot Hardsuit Labs off of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 and switched to a new development studio to continue working on the game. At this point, the game is delayed indefinitely, but at one point, it was almost scrapped entirely.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 was first announced at GDC in 2019, with Hardsuit Labs developing and aiming for a 2020 release date. By late 2020, creative leads on the project had left and the game needed to be delayed. Earlier this year, Paradox stepped in and delayed the game indefinitely and put it in the hands of a new development studio, leading to further layoffs at Hardsuit Labs.

While eventually the decision was made to carry the game on, the publisher did consider scrapping it entirely and was prepared to do so. Speaking with Swedish outlet, Avanza (via Gamesradar), Paradox CEO, Fredrik Wester, explained: “When we lifted the game from the original developer, we had a long discussion about whether to end the game or push it forward. At the time we were actually prepared to shut down production altogether.”

However, after seeing some pitches from developers, one of them was deemed “convincing enough to push forward”. Unfortunately, Paradox has not yet confirmed which studio is now handling the project, but we can likely expect Bloodlines 2 to stay out of the spotlight for another year or so while the new team reworks the game.

KitGuru Says: Bloodlines 2 was highly anticipated, but it was clear that there were some major development issues going on over the course of 2020. Hopefully this new mystery studio can deliver the game that was originally promised.

Earlier this year, Magic: Legends, an action RPG spin-off for Magic the Gathering, released in open beta on PC, with plans to expand to consoles later down the line. Unfortunately, the game did not get off to a good start and is now being cancelled.

Magic: Legends entered open beta on the Epic Games Store and via a standalone launcher in March 2021. The game was developed by Cryptic and Perfect World but released to poor reception from fans and now, the project is being scrapped entirely. Magic: Legends' servers will officially go offline on the 31st of October 2021.

Cryptic announced the news in a blog post today, saying: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31, 2021. All players who spent money in-game across Arc and the Epic Games Store during the Open Beta will be refunded their full purchase amounts. Servers will remain open for play until closing day, however we will be closing the Zen Shop effective immediately. Later this week, all items will instead be purchasable using Aether, our free in-game currency.”

The studio admits that its “vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark”, but adds that “several valuable lessons” were learned along the way.

Amazon Game Studios and Athlon Games were co-developing a new MMO set in the Lord of the Rings universe, but it looks like those plans have now been scrapped due to a dispute between both parties.

As reported by Bloomberg, Amazon has cancelled yet another video game. Following Breakaway and Crucible, the company has halted the development of the Lord of the Rings MMORPG that it was working on. The game was being co-developed with Athlon Games, a studio belonging to Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd.

Back in December, Tencent acquired Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd. According to an unnamed source, Leyou's acquisition resulted in a dispute between Amazon and Tencent over the game's development, which led to its cancellation.

An Amazon representative commented on the situation, saying they were “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title.” The representative further stated that the developers working on this will be transferred to other projects.

After having to scrap plans for a physical event in 2020, the organisers of Computex hoped to come back with a bang in 2021. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic is still on-going and as a result, there will be no onsite exhibition this year either.

Last night, the organisers behind Computex confirmed that the event would not return to normal this year after all:

“With another wave of coronavirus pandemic across the world, it doesn't look like we are close to the end. The majority of the show's stakeholders, including international exhibitors, visitors, and media, cannot join the show due to border control. Therefore, the organizers of COMPUTEX have decided to cancel the onsite exhibition this year.”

Instead of the onsite exhibition, virtual events will be taking place instead. We should have more news on that in the weeks to come. Computex 2021 was planned for the 1st to 4th of June.

In the build-up to Cyberpunk 2077's launch, CD Projekt Red teased that it was working on a big multiplayer spin-off for release sometime in the next couple of years. Unfortunately, it looks like that project may no longer see the light of day, as the studio has “reconsidered” its plans.

In a strategy update video aimed at investors, CD Projekt announced some major changes moving forward, starting with plans for a Triple A multiplayer Cyberpunk game. During the video, CD Projekt Group CEO, Adam Kiciński stated:

“Previously we hinted that our next triple-A would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this now. Given our new more systematic and agile approach, instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game, we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.”

As reported by VGC, a conference call was held after the video released, during which Kiciński expanded on his comments about future online and multiplayer content:

“Regarding online, we are changing our approach, so we want to have online in our future games, definitely, but step by step. So, we are working on specific features enhancing our single player [games], but we are not working on releasing the next game [as] a big online experience. So, we will be enhancing our single player games with online experiences.”

Given this new approach, we won't be seeing a standalone multiplayer game from CD Projekt Red. However, if a Cyberpunk sequel were to come out, multiplayer would likely feature in some form. Still, it is noted that the studio will still mainly focus on “single player story-driven AAA RPGs”.

KitGuru Says: Given how Cyberpunk 2077's launch went down, and the fact that the game still needs plenty of bug fixes and feature updates to meet its original promise, this announcement isn't too surprising. Perhaps we'll see Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer one day, but it won't be a major standalone title anymore.

Rumours about a 20GB version of the RTX 3080 and a 16GB version of the RTX 3070 have been discussed since the launch of the RTX 30 series. These cards were even listed in Gigabyte's Watch Dogs Legion redeeming form and mentioned in Galax's roadmap, but apparently, they have now been cancelled.

Scheduled for an alleged release in December, the RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB SKUs won't be launched anymore. This comes from VideoCardz, citing information from “two independent sources”.

Both cards were expected to rival the likes of the Radeon RX 6900/6800 series, which are said to feature 16GB memory buffers and the Navi 21 GPU.

No reason for such action was disclosed by Nvidia, after all, neither GPU was officially announced. Maybe the yields on the GDDR6X memory used by the RTX 3080 20GB weren't good enough, but this wouldn't affect the RTX 3070 16GB cards, which were expected to come with GDDR6 memory. It's also possible that Nvidia is speeding up the reported transition to TSMC's 7nm node to launch the Super variants sooner.

No change of plans was reported regarding the RTX 3060 Ti, which is expected to come out by mid-November.

KitGuru says: Would you buy an RTX 3080 20GB or an RTX 3070 16GB if they were to become available? Do you think Nvidia will increase the memory buffer if it launches the RTX 30 Super variants?

Even the biggest names in the games industry have projects cancelled from time to time. This week, we learned that this very thing recently happened to Hideo Kojima, who wasn't too happy about the project being scrapped.

In an interview with Japanese site, Livedoor, and translated to English by VGC, Kojima is quoted talking about his next game: “It's still in the early planning stages so I can't say much, but on the down-low, I'm actively working on it”.

Unfortunately, this new project seems to have risen from the ashes of a ‘major' game that was in development: “Recently a major project of mine got cancelled so I’m pretty pissed, but that’s the games industry for you.”

Unfortunately, there is no word on what this major project was, but we do know that after Death Stranding, Kojima openly spoke about wanting to ‘make the scariest horror game'. Perhaps this cancelled project was related to that.

VGC also reports that Kojima was recently been in early discussions with Stadia, so we may see the game designer attempt to leverage cloud gaming at some point.

KitGuru Says: We don't know much about the factors that went into cancelling Kojima's recent major project, but I do wonder if Ken-Ichiro Imaizumi's departure from Kojima Productions had something to do with it. Either way, the studio is keeping busy and already has something else in the early stages. In the meantime, Death Stranding will be coming to PC soon, opening the game up to a new audience.

Shortly after yesterday's news that Paris Games Week has been cancelled, the organisers behind the Tokyo Game Show have also confirmed that there will be no physical event this year. The Tokyo Game Show was initially due to take place in late September.

This is the first time that TGS has been cancelled in the event's history, but it should not come as much of a surprise, as Tokyo recently went into a state of emergency due to the spread of COVID-19. It is one of many major gaming events that have been cancelled, postponed or shifted to digital this year, with the likes of Gamescom, GDC, E3, Oculus Connect and Paris Games Week also being on that list.

Tokyo Game Show 2020 will now be a digital event instead, meaning we may well still see announcements from Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft, particularly with next-gen consoles on the way later this year.

Specifics on the digital event have yet to be announced but we should have more details soon.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: TGS would have been particularly big this year as we ramp up for new console launches. Hopefully we'll still get a good version of the show in digital form.

For many years now, fans of the Prince of Persia series have been clamouring for a new game. As it turns out, Ubisoft was working on one called ‘Prince of Persia Redemption' around the same time that Assassin's Creed 3 was in development, and footage of the game has been sat on YouTube for eight years.

We aren't sure how nobody noticed this one conspicuous video for so long, but today, Prince of Persia Redemption began doing the rounds online. The video could be DMCA'd at any time but for now, the one below should work.

How do we know that this footage is real? Well it was confirmed by Jonathan Cooper, an animation expert that has worked on titles like Assassin's Creed 3 and more recently, The Last of Us Part II. According to a tweet from Cooper, this video shows a pre-rendered game pitch, although Ubisoft ultimately passed on the game.

It was being worked on by Khai Nguyen, who later went to work on For Honor instead. Perhaps a few more developers will speak out on the story behind this particular cancelled game now that the secret is out.

KitGuru Says: This is a scripted sequence rather than full gameplay, so we don't know how far Prince of Persia Redemption got before being cancelled. Perhaps we'll see something new from the Prince of Persia series in the near future.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen a lot of major companies pull out of the Game Developers Conference in early March. Despite the growing list of drop-outs, a few days ago the organisers behind GDC still planned to go ahead with the event. That changed last night, with GDC being officially postponed.

The likes of Microsoft, Sony, Facebook/Oculus, Unity, Epic Games, Capcom, EA, Square Enix and more had pulled out of the event recently due to concerns around the coronavirus outbreak. Now after re-evaluating the situation, GDC is being postponed, with plans to hold the event later this Summer instead.

Here is the full statement: “After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March. Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we're genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time. We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.”

A lot of developers (and press members) will now have to deal with the costs of cancelling hotel rooms and travel arrangements. A fundraiser is being put together to help offset those financial losses for some developers. Meanwhile, GDC is planning on refunding the cost of passes to the event and those who booked hotel rooms within the reserved ‘GDC block' won't have to pay a cancellation fee.

KitGuru Says: GDC 2020 is going to be particularly important as developers begin to prepare for next-gen console hardware. Hopefully a new date for later in the year can be secured and more importantly, hopefully the virus outbreak will be under control by then.
