Hardcore EVE Online players have long used spreadsheets to calculate profits and battle damage. Up to now, they have had to fill these manually. However, thanks to an unexpected partnership between Microsoft and the game's developer, players will soon be able to export their game data directly into Excel spreadsheets.

The announcement came during EVE fanfest, running from May 6th to the 7th. As explained by the developer, the studio is still in an early development phase, but that didn't refrain fans from passionately celebrating the reveal.

More information about the tool should be coming later this year, but for now, you can take a brief look at how the tool works from this short clip.

As you would've expected from a game-dedicated event, this wasn't the only announcement. Besides Excel support, EVE Online is also getting new narrative arcs, a native client for Spanish speakers, visual enhancements, and a feature that helps new players pick a class.

KitGuru says: This is a partnership that makes plenty of sense considering the type of game EVE Online is. Still, it is something that I don’t think any of us expected to see officially. What do you think of Eve Online’s new Excel integration feature? Do you think more games should allow players to export their data this way?

CCP Games, the developers behind EVE Online, have been attempting to put out a shooter spin-off for years now. The spin-off idea began with Dust 514, which was shut down back in 2016, then the first-person shooter concept was picked up again for ‘Project Nova', which has been in development for a long time. Unfortunately, the game wasn't meeting internal expectations and has now been cancelled.

Project Nova was first teased back in late 2018 with a cinematic trailer. CCP Games was looking to blend “tactical co-op PvE and explosive PvP modes” but somewhere along the way, the team began struggling to bring that vision to life.

One month after the initial Project Nova reveal, the game went ‘back to the drawing board'. It has been well over a year since then and now, all members of the team at the Iceland-based studio are being moved on to other projects.

This doesn't mean that there won't be another EVE-themed shooter eventually though, as CCP Games still remains “committed to offering a rock-solid, action-oriented gameplay experience with stellar visuals”. Project Nova is being left behind, but something new is going to rise up in its place.

KitGuru Says: We are moving on to another round of EVE spin-off development. Hopefully this one will see more success than the last attempts, after all, the EVE Online universe is ripe for expansion.

CCP Games has made a name for itself over the years with EVE Online and other spin-offs. It seems that all of that hard work caught some attention, as CCP Games has been acquired by Pearl Abyss, the Korean developer behind Black Desert Online.

While Pearl Abyss now owns CCP Games, the two companies will continue to operate separately. Although, Pearl Abyss did state that it hopes to learn from CCP Games and integrate its practises into other projects. Specifically, Pearl Abyss seems to be particularly fond of the “incredible job” CCP has done “engaging and maintaining” its player base in EVE Online over the years.

With that in mind, this move seems to be a way for Pearl Abyss to change its own way of doing things, with hopes that CCP's extensive experience will help them get there.

CCP CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, offered his own statement on the acquisition: “Pearl Abyss is a fast-growing company with lots to offer in terms of technology, capability and vision. I believe our two companies have a lot to learn from each other. We are very excited to join forces with them and achieve great new heights for our companies, our games and—above all—our players.”

KitGuru Says: I've always enjoyed EVE Online and CCP has certainly done a great job of retaining passionate players over the years- something that not many MMOs can manage these days. It will be interesting to see where things end up from here.

While CCP Games were one of the earliest developers to support virtual reality, it looks like they will begin taking a step back. The writing has been on the wall for quite some time, but the studio's CEO has since addressed the situation, stating that the VR market ‘just isn't there'.

The transition away from focusing on virtual reality began as far back as 2015, when CCP Games' head, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, said that people might be overestimating VR's ability to catch on. Then in October last year, CCP Games shutdown two of virtual reality studios, including CCP Newcastle, which was responsible for Eve: Valkyrie.

The latest update to CCP's stance on VR comes from its CEO once again. Speaking at the Eve Fanfest this week, he said: “Despite our groundbreaking success in VR by VR standards [the multiplayer market] just isn't there. So we decided to pursue activities closer to our own DNA with Eve”.

The two VR games that CCP Games did release will continue to receive support, though it is worth noting that Eve: Valkyrie is no longer a VR exclusive, and can be played on a regular 2D screen. While we won't be seeing any brand new VR titles from CCP Games for the time being, the studio still believes that “in the future, it will become a new computer/human interface” that will usher in a wave of other technologies.

KitGuru Says: While CCP Games might be taking a step back from VR, we have seen other developers just recently dive in. Most notably, Bethesda has begun supporting virtual reality, though whether or not that will extend beyond DOOM, Fallout 4 and Skyrim remains to be seen.

CCP Games, the creators of EVE Online and its various spin-offs were keen to support consumer VR headsets right off the bat. The company launched EVE: Valkyrie as a launch title for the Oculus Rift in 2016 and had five studios in total working on virtual reality projects. However, as we head into 2018, it seems that CCP wants to shift focus back to PC and mobile games and as a result, three of its VR studios will be shutting down.

As confirmed by a press release, CCP’s ‘global restructuring’ will result in around 100 job cuts worldwide. The first studio to be hit is CCP Newcastle, which was responsible for EVE: Valkyrie. CCP Atlanta will also be closing, which handled other VR projects that may not see the light of day.

In a statement, CCP Games CEO, Hilmar Veigar Petursson said that “despite the success” of its VR games, the studio is ‘shifting its focus’ back to PC and mobile. In the meantime, CCP’s current crop of VR games, like EVE: Valkyrie, will continue to be supported. However, additional investments into the VR ecosystem won’t be taking place until market conditions change.

KitGuru Says: It seems that CCP has been let down by the VR market, which is taking longer to ‘take off’ than analysts previously anticipated. Initially, VR was expected to explode in popularity but that hasn’t really happened, despite backing from Oculus, Valve and other large companies. Did any of you play EVE: Valkyrie, Gunjack or Sparc in VR?

CCP Games has announced that it plans to shut down its Eve-linked free to play shooter, Dust 514 in May this year, making room for a brand new FPS built in the Unreal 4 Engine. The free to play game will have its servers go offline on the 30th of May and the planned 1.3 update has also been cancelled. Those who are still playing the game will also notice that microtransactions have been removed entirely.

Dust 514 was CCP's own free to play shooter based in the same universe as Eve Online, it had a pretty limited player base due to the fact that it only ever launched on the PlayStation 3 but word has it that CCP has a better first-person shooter in the works and it may just be announced later this year following the shutdown of Dust 514.

Details of CCP's Dust 514 replacement are currently expected to arrive during the EVE Fanfest in April. CCP will be using its experience with Dust 514 to build a new game from scratch using the Unreal Engine 4.

KitGuru Says: The EVE universe is quite interesting and it seems that CCP wants to expand it further with new games. We will be getting Eve: Valkyrie for the Oculus Rift later this year and it looks like a new FPS game is also on the cards.

Last year, Samsung partnered up with Oculus to launch the Samsung GearVR headset, for use with Galaxy smartphones. Now, CCP Games, the team behind Eve Online and Eve: Valkyrie, has announced Gunjack, a space shooter for the mobile virtual reality headset, set in the same universe as Eve.

Gunjack puts players in the operator seat of a gun turret on a mining vessel out in space. These turrets are your defence against enemies, such as space bandits. Since this is a mobile game, it is fairly simple gameplay-wise, you sit at at the turret and fire at incoming enemies. You will also get power-ups for your weapon, such as homing missiles, lasers and smart bombs.

What is impressive is that the game is built-in Unreal Engine 4 and designed from the ground up for the virtual reality experience. In the press release announcement, Gunjack's executive producer said: “Our goal was nothing less than creating the best game yet for the Gear VR headset. Our team has focused on delivering the most action-packed, graphically-stunning game possible on this new virtual reality platform.”

KitGuru Says: These were the smaller, simpler gameplay experiences that Samsung built the GearVR to cater towards. There aren't many high-profile VR games currently available on mobile either so this could end up being pretty big.

Eve Online has reported its lowest player numbers in the last seven years. The space-based MMORPG has been one of the most popular subscription based games over the last few years and is one of the few that have lasted this long without switching to a free to play model.

According to this graph made by a Eve Online player by the name of JesterTrek, the amount of concurrent players hit its lowest point since 2008 in January this year, with just over 21,000 players logged in at once. This is quite a bit lower than the January 2014 results, which topped in at around 33,000 concurrent players.

eve-players-since2008

Now there could be plenty of reasons for the decline in players. MMOs have been losing their appeal in recent years so there is probably a lack of new players coming in compared to several years ago. Additionally, there have been plenty of changes to the game over time.

The game isn't all that accessible to new players wanting to jump in, veteran players may have finally given up or maybe less people are using alternate accounts and are less serious about mining resources and gaming the economy than they used to be. Either way, 21,000 concurrent players is still quite a few so I wouldn't go expecting the game's downfall anytime soon.

KitGuru Says: Eve Online is a game that has always intrigued me but like with any MMO, I don't know enough people who play to truly get in to it myself. We might be overestimating virtual reality, according to CCP Games CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson. Those are big words coming from the head of the studio making one of the most promising virtual reality projects so far, Eve Valkyrie.

According to Pétursson, right now “people tend to overestimate what we will accomplish in five years”, however, on the other end of it, they also “tend to underestimate where we'll be in ten years”. These comments were made at a panel (Via: Venture Beat) at SlushPlay in Iceland recently.

eve-valkyrie

“3D cards took six years to catch on, and phones took 10 years. I used to go to GDC, and they would say that mobile phones are the future, and it was nothing. Ringtones were a bigger business than games back then. And we sit here and say VR is going to be big next year, and it’s not going to be big.”

After kicking up a storm of hype with the Oculus Rift with the original dev kit, those working on virtual reality have also made various attempts to manage expectations. In addition, Mark Zuckerberg seems to be under the impression that the Oculus Rift won't be available for consumers this year as there are no large shipments planned for the device at all.

That said, we will apparently see the launch of the HTC Vive, a SteamVR headset at the end of this year.

KitGuru Says: The CCP Games CEO has a grounded view on VR. Given that his studio is working on one of the first big titles for the Oculus Rift, he is probably in the right position to know where VR is heading and how far along the technology really is. How long do you guys think it will take for virtual reality to catch on?

Project Vaulderie, a fan remake of Vampire: The Masquerade, has been shut down by CCP Games, the developers behind Eve Online. According to the group behind the fan development project, they were served with a Cease and Desist letter, essentially shutting down development of the remake.

The aim of Project Vaulderie was to remake Vampire: The Masquerade inside of the Unity Engine as a non-commercial effort after the game's original developer, Troika Games, shut down just under ten years ago.The group behind the remake had plans to talk with Activision as they were led to believe that the mega publisher held all of the rights.

devblog2-header

Activision owns certain rights to the title but not all of them, a fact that was pointed out in the cease and desist letter: “While Activision retains certain rights to the game it created, CCP continues to own all other rights associated with Vampire: The Masquerade.”

The team behind Project Vaulderie is now looking at alternatives, which would allow for the remake to come to fruition. Unfortunately, this could take a long time so development seems to be off the table for the foreseeable future:

“We are avidly seeking a resolute course to continue working on a future game,” the team behind the project said. “But we cannot at this time discuss this publicly and with that I urge you to please be patient and hopeful that we will find a way.”

CCP Games, the company behind EVE Online has announced that it suffered a $21 million loss during its 2013 fiscal year. CCP also recently had to cancel its upcoming MMO: World of Darkness, which was based on the role playing board game series.

The loss was quite a big hit as in 2012 the company made a profit of $4.6 million, the difference this year however, is likely due to the increased cost that went in to developing World of Darkness. The now cancelled MMO also took up an unspecified chunk of the company's $56.5 million research and development budget. In comparison, the R&D budget for CCP was just $16.5 million in 2012 so World of Darkness definitely increased costs at the company.

World of Darkness was going to be a vampire themed MMORPG, the game's cancellation led to 56 people losing their jobs and the rest of the employees being reassigned to EVE Online. As you can see, creating games can be an expensive and risky business and cancelling a project can cost developers and publishers a lot of money. Recently, one of the developers behind next gen shooter: The Division, applauded Ubisoft for taking the financial hit when delaying Watch Dogs in order to release a better game.

KitGuru Says: Game development is expensive, it must be a shame to see all of that money, work and effort all put to waste with the game's cancellation.
