While Halo Infinite may not have been the grand revival that Microsoft were hoping for the franchise, series co-developer Certain Affinity looked to be prepping to offer their own take on the franchise with a battle royale game. Though never officially announced, the long-in-development title has now reportedly been cancelled.

According to trusted leaker Shpeshal_Nick, Project Tatanka (as it was known) has been cancelled, with the industry insider – alongside his co-hosts –  making the claim via their XboxEra podcast.

For the uninitiated, Project Tatanka was being developed by Halo series co-developer Certain Affinity, with work on the game beginning as far back as 2020. Though it was never officially announced, its existence was all-but-confirmed multiple times over the years by the studio itself.

Even at the time of the initial leak, the battle royale genre was far past its peak, and while the genre’s popularity has ebbed and flowed since it is possible that Microsoft deemed a BR game tied to Hale Infinite specifically to be unsustainable.

With Project Tatanka now no longer happening, the future for Halo is even less certain. Of course, another Halo game is inevitably on its way, but what exactly it will be is a mystery for now.

Back in April, Halo Infinite support studio, Certain Affinity, announced that it was ‘deepening' its partnership with 343 Industries. At the time, this was heavily rumoured to be a Battle Royale mode. We still don't have confirmation or denial on that, but Certain Affinity does currently have a huge team working on something ‘big and new'.

Certain Affinity CEO, Max Hoberman, spoke to VentureBeat about the studio's on-going projects in an interview, confirming that the studio is “doing lead development” on an unannounced mode for Halo Infinite. This is the studio's largest project right now, with around 100 developers working on it.

Interestingly, Hoberman also reveals that the studio has been working on the mode for two years already. Previously, clues datamined from Halo Infinite showed that a Battle Royale mode of some kind was being explored. Other reporters also claimed to have heard about Infinite's impending large-scale multiplayer mode.

Officially, a Halo Battle Royale has not been announced. It was first thought that the mode would be a big late 2022 release for Microsoft, but the Xbox Games Showcase came and went without any official news. 343 recently revamped its multiplayer roadmap and shifted resources around to try and deliver quicker updates starting in 2023.

KitGuru Says: The standard Battle Royale formula is pretty played out at this point, so it will be interesting to see if Halo's take on it can bring some creative new twists. Of course, Halo Battle Royale is still just a rumour, and has not yet been announced. That should change in 2023 though.

There have been plenty of rumours surrounding Certain Affinity recently. Not only is the studio reportedly working on its own original IP for Xbox Game Pass, but the studio has also recently “deepened” its relationship with 343 Industries and is currently working on a big Battle Royale mode for Halo Infinite.

Infinite Leaks, a group of dataminers dedicated to unearthing secrets hidden within the Halo Infinite files, have discovered a ton of evidence pointing towards a new Battle Royale mode for Halo Infinite. Originally, the mode's existence was confirmed by Jez Corden, who also recently revealed some additional details about the project, which has been in the works at Certain Affinity for over two years already.

For starters, the mode, codenamed “Tatanka”, is a battle royale mode and much like Call of Duty Warzone, it will essentially be treated as its own game. The goal with this mode is to bring new players into the Halo franchise and get a piece of that massive audience of BR enthusiasts.

Currently, the mode is targeting a Season 3 or Season 4 release, so it should be announced properly over the summer. Prior to launch, there were many calls for 343 to add Battle Royale to Infinite, but the team chose to focus on its core multiplayer and campaign fans at launch, before branching out into new territory later down the line.

None of this has been officially confirmed yet, but we can expect more news in the coming weeks. Given how much data leaked in the latest updates for the game, Infinite's Season 02 patch should also contain a lot of new information.

KitGuru Says: I was never one of those people that felt like Halo Infinite needed a Battle Royale to be successful, but with Infinite's Battle Pass-oriented, F2P multiplayer approach, it should certainly help. Will you be playing Halo's Battle Royale mode when it comes out?

Aside from a rumoured Monster Hunter style game, Certain Affinity is continuing its development work on Halo Infinite, working alongside 343 Industries and other studios. Today, Certain Affinity announced that it is “deepening” its relationship with 343, and will become more involved in growing Halo Infinite moving forward.

Certain Affinity has been a key support studio for Microsoft over the years, and that has only grown over the development of Halo Infinite and the Master Chief Collection for PC. Currently, Certain Affinity is expanding and hiring for more developers to work on its Halo-related projects.

While nothing is explicitly stated here, this likely confirms a recent rumour from Windows Central, which claimed that Certain Affinity is working on a new game mode for Halo Infinite. This new mode will likely be a new spin on the battle royale formula, and Certain Affinity will likely continue to update and maintain it, similar to Activision's setup with Call of Duty and Warzone.

Aside from continuing work on Halo, Microsoft has also reportedly greenlit a Monster Hunter style game to be developed by Certain Affinity. This title has also not been announced officially, but it should be another key addition to the Xbox Game Pass line-up.

KitGuru Says: The blog post about ‘deepening its relationship' with 343 isn't entirely interesting on its own. However, when combined with recent rumours, it does seem much more exciting.

Xbox’s first-party studios and recent acquisitions have been getting all the headlines lately, but Microsoft does also have a number of third-party publishing deals in place for the coming years. One of those deals will see one of Xbox’s long-standing partner support studios, Certain Affinity, trying their hands at a co-op, Monster Hunter-style game.

This game was previously reported on back in January 2022, with reliable sources claiming that Certain Affinity is working on a “Monster Hunter clone” with a focus on co-op gameplay as part of an effort to bring variety to the Xbox Game Pass line-up. Certain Affinity is a known partner studio for Microsoft, having previously worked on key projects like Halo Infinite.

Now, as first spotted by Klobrille, Certain Affinity is looking to hire new engineers, specifically those with experience working with Xbox hardware. While this doesn't outright confirm the Monster Hunter game, it does confirm that Certain Affinity is working with Microsoft on something at the moment.

While much attention has been placed on Xbox's new and improved first-party studio line-up, Xbox Games Publishing has also been very active. We can expect more surprise indie hits like Tunic, as well as larger, Microsoft-funded titles as this console generation continues.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft is stacked with studios for RPGs and shooters, so we can expect to see some experimental publishing deals to bring variety to Game Pass. Hopefully Certain Affinity's upcoming project isn't too far away from a full reveal.

One of those deals will see one of Xbox’s long-standing partner support studios, Certain Affinity, trying their hands at a co-op, Monster Hunter-style game.

According to Jeff Grubb’s sources, via VGC, one of Xbox’s recent publishing deals involves Certain Affinity, a long-time support studio that has helped out on some major titles – including the Halo series and Left 4 Dead. The game is described as a “Monster Hunter clone” with a focus on co-op gameplay. This game is also part of an effort to differentiate the Xbox Game Pass line-up.

“They’re like, ‘we probably can’t get Monster Hunter on Game Pass, that would be pretty expensive, but we definitely want a game like that, because we see the potential for that to grow and be a big thing with long-term support”, Grubb said.

This lines up with some information that we already know, as Certain Affinity has confirmed that it is developing a new IP. However, no specific details about the game have been officially revealed.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft has a huge number of studios for shooters and RPGs at this point, so I’d expect to see Microsoft experimenting more with third-party studios in other genres, like co-op multiplayer. Whether or not this game will be able to rival Monster Hunter or a similar game like Dauntless still remains to be seen.

We often see large Triple A game studios enlisting the help of support studios for big projects and Halo Infinite is no exception. Following on from Microsoft's recent efforts to squash rumours, Certain Affinity has announced that it has been working closely with 343 Industries on the game all year.

Certain Affinity posted a blog update today confirming that it began working on Halo Infinite back in December 2019, seemingly as part of a ‘final year' development push to get the game released. Of course, the studio's involvement may stretch a bit longer now, as Halo Infinite has been pushed into 2021.

Certain Affinity has a long history of collaboration with the Halo series, in fact, the studio was founded by a former Halo multiplayer and online lead. With that in mind, it is highly likely that Certain Affinity is focusing its efforts on the multiplayer side, just as it did for Halo 2: Anniversary.

As part of the post, Max Hoberman, founder and president of Certain Affinity, gave a statement about the project: “Halo Infinite has huge long-term ambitions, while also giving a respectful nod to the franchise’s past. This is an exciting combination. Given our own deep roots and long-time connections to the series, we couldn’t be more excited to help 343 realise this vision”

KitGuru Says: Halo Infinite has been in development for years and after the most recent delay, it would seem that 343 Industries is in need of some extra helping hands to finish off the project. Are many of you still looking forward to Halo Infinite? When do you think the game will eventually come out?
