It looks like the price of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card could drop not only at Overclockers.co.uk, but at other stores too. A U.S.-based store recently offered Nvidia’s dual-chip flagship graphics card for $1500, which represents a 50 per cent price drop.

Newegg, a leading online store from the U.S., has quietly dropped the price of Asustek’s GeForce GTX Titan Z from $3000 to $1499. At present the product is listed as sold-out and it is unclear whether it will be back and at a discount price. However, the fact that etailers started to drop price of the most expensive consumer-class graphics card ever seems to be rather important.

At the weekend Overclockers.co.uk offered the GeForce GTX Titan Z from Gigabyte Technology and Palit for £1499.

Keeping in mind that many enthusiasts these days buy Maxwell-based GeForce GTX 970 and 980 graphics cards, Kepler-based GeForce GTX 700-series as well as GeForce GTX Titan graphics boards are quickly losing popularity. Therefore, it is not really surprising that certain stores want to get rid of the previous-generation products.

Powered by two Nvidia GK110 GPUs in their full configuration with 2880 stream processors, 240 texture units and 48 raster operations pipelines, the GeForce GTX Titan Z 12GB is among the fastest graphics cards on the market today. Unfortunately, its recommended price of $3000 has kept gamers away from the solution.

The main rival of the GeForce GTX Titan Z is AMD’s dual-GPU Radeon R9 295X2, which costs $999 at the moment.

KitGuru Says: While at $1500 the GeForce GTX Titan Z can actually be a pretty viable solution, it should be noted that the amount of such graphics boards is pretty low. As a result, it is not easy to get such a graphics adapter, especially at $1500.

Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX Titan Z was hardly ever supposed to become a popular solution on the market because of its unprecedented price. However, five months after the release, this price seems to go down, at least in select cases.

When the dual-chip triple-slot GeForce GTX Titan Z hit the U.K. market in late May, it cost whopping £2399.99, the highest price of a consumer-class graphics card ever. After a couple of months of Titan Z’s availability a number of retailers started to offer £100 discounts on select GeForce GTX Titan Z 12GB models, whereas Nvidia decided to provide certain discounts to system builders who used the dual-GPU graphics board inside their gaming rigs sometimes in late August. Recently things started to intensify.

Last week Overclockers.co.uk dropped the price of the GeForce GTX Titan Z to £1999.99, which was a significant drop. This week OcUK slashed another £500 and now the GeForce GTX Titan Z from Gigabyte Technology and Palit cost £1499.99. A model from EVGA costs £200 more, it is priced at £1699.99.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z is powered by two Nvidia GK110 GPUs in their full configuration with 2880 stream processors, 240 texture units and 48 raster operations pipelines. The graphics processors operate at 705MHz in default mode and 876MHz in “boost” mode. Because of the low GPU clock-rates, the Titan Z is easily outperformed by two GeForce GTX Titan Black graphics cards (with the same GPU configuration) that cost a lower amount of money.

While the GeForce GTX Titan Z was designed for gamers and PC enthusiasts who demand to have absolutely the best hardware possible, it has never been the best. Even despite of all price-cuts, the GeForce GTX Titan Z does not seem to be a really good offering now that the new generation GeForce GTX 900-series based on the Maxwell architecture has arrived. Another problem that the GeForce GTX Titan Z has on the market is the Radeon R9 295X2 for £699 or £659.

KitGuru Says: Buying a GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card today is like buying an outdated supercar. You can get similar performance at a lower price and with improved comfort and safety. However, there are people who like “unicorns” like the GeForce GTX Titan Z or the 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 “Eleanor”, aren’t there?
