Cherry MX switches have been popular amongst mechanical keyboard users for decades and while new switch types have arrived over the years, we've never seen a complete overhaul of the classic MX switches. That changes this year with Cherry announcing the MX2A, aiming to be the new standard in mechanical switches.

Designed by Cherry in Germany, the MX2A promises smoother actuation compared to current MX switches and improved acoustics. The MX2A line will include the full-size derivatives such as MX Red, MX Brown, MX Black, MX Speed Silver, MX Silent Red, and their respective RGB variants, ensuring users can find a switch that perfectly suits their preferences.

The MX2A switches ship with a new spring design, changing from cylindrical to barrel geometry for near-contactless linear movement, reducing spring deformation and scratching in this long-lasting switch. An updated, unique spring-centring stem adorned with a “crown” of ribs ensures a more precise and consistent feel and sound, reducing scratchiness and improving sliding properties. All MX2A switches will also use the Gold Crosspoint contact system, which is an industry leading feature enabling a debounce time of less than 1ms.

If you are a big fan of the distinct clicky sound and general type-feel of MX Blue switches, then you will be happy to know that these switches will continue to ship without the lubrication and barrel spring present on the new MX2A line-up. As a die-hard MX Blue user myself, I see why Cherry would not want to mess with perfection.

To kick off the rollout of MX2A switches, Cherry XTRFY is introducing the new K5V2 keyboard, a 65% board based on the original K5, complete with customisable switches, stabilisers and keycaps – you can even replace the frame and logo plate if you want for a true custom keyboard.

Cherry MX2A switches will be available first for business clients, like other mechanical keyboard makers. Sales to DIY enthusiasts and consumers will take place at a later date.

KitGuru Says: The Cherry MX switch has been my go-to for years. It will be interesting to check out the new round of MX2A switches first-hand to compare with the original models.

Corsair has a new flagship wireless keyboard – the K100 Air. The new keyboard offers low-profile Cherry MX mechanical keyswitches, as well as a brushed aluminium frame to keep it light and portable.

The K100 Air is Corsair's thinnest gaming keyboard, measuring in at just 17mm at its thickest point and 11mm at its slimmest point. Under the low-profile keycaps, you will find tactile Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile mechanical switches with a super responsive actuation point of just 0.8mm. As far as the wireless connectivity goes, you'll get Corsair's own Slipstream Wireless, as well as low-latency Bluetooth. Between the two, you can connect the keyboard to three devices at once and switch between them at the press of a key.

The battery life will take you pretty far, lasting for up to 50 hours of use with RGB backlighting turned on, or up to a whopping 200 hours with the backlighting off. With that in mind, you should get multiple days, or even weeks of use if you sacrifice the RGB lighting. For charging, or just using the keyboard in wired mode, there is a detachable USB-C cable.

Unfortunately, there is a hefty price tag attached. As nice as the keyboard looks, it is £279.99, which is on the very high-end side of the market for a prebuilt keyboard.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: On paper, the K100 Air offers a great feature set. Whether or not that is worth the near £300 price tag remains to be seen.

When Corsair announced their first ever laptop we were deeply interested. The laptop would be named Voyager a1600 and would be built on AMD hardware without even the slightest whiff of Intel Inside. With the guarantee of an 8-core Ryzen CPU, grunty graphics, DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen4 storage we fully expected a laptop that performed well but what would Corsair add to stand out from the crowd? Capellix lighting – Check. Cherry MX switches on the keyboard – Check. iCue management software – Check.

Corsair has been very popular in the mechanical keyboard space for years now with full-sized and 10-keyless options but there has been a gap in Corsair's market – 60% keyboards. That changes today with the Corsair K65 RGB MINI, an ultra-compact 60% mechanical gaming keyboard with PBT double-shot keycaps.

Aside from its compact size, one of the key selling points for the K65 RGB MINI is the use of Corsair AXON hyper-processing technology, which first debuted on the Corsair K100. AXON is an on-board real-time operating system, paving the way for even faster polling rates. The K65 RGB MINI is capable of 8,000Hz polling rate over USB-C, meaning inputs are delivered eight times faster than standard gaming keyboards, which typically offer a 1,000Hz polling rate.

As you would expect, Corsair is sticking with Cherry MX switches for the K65 RGB MINI. There are different switch options available, starting with CHERRY MX Red for silky smooth and linear keypresses, CHERRY MX SILENT Red switches with a patented noise-reduction design and CHERRY MX SPEED Silver, featuring an ultra-fast 1.2mm actuation distance.

For those who want to personalise their keyboards, Corsair is also making PBT double-shot keycap kits available with six different colour options: Onyx Black, Arctic White, Elgato Blue, ORIGIN Red, Rogue Pink, and Mint Green. These key caps are 1.5mm thick and are less prone to wear and tear over time.

The K65 RGB MINI also benefits from improvements made to Corsair iCUE. Using iCUE, users can configure the tiny K65 RGB Mini to include all the features of a full sized keyboard, so you won't miss out on macros, media controls, key remapping etc.

The Corsair K65 RGB MINI keyboard is available starting today priced at $109.99/£109.99. The Corsair PBT double-shot Pro keycap mod kits are also available, priced at $29.99/£29.99.

KitGuru Says: The Corsair K65 RGB MINI is shaping up to be one of the most feature-packed 60% keyboards on the market. Do any of you use a 60% keyboard? Are you tempted to upgrade?

Thermaltake is expanding its peripheral line-up this month with a new wireless keyboard. Today, the company officially announced the W1 Wireless Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, delivering Cherry MX switches free of wires.

The W1's main selling feature is the wireless connectivity. There are three different connection modes that can be used. 2.4GHz wireless is available for low latency in a range of 10 meters – this mode is also battery life friendly, with Thermaltake claiming it can last over one month on a charge. The other wireless mode is of course Bluetooth, or you can plug it into a device directly via USB-C.

The other key selling point here is that this is a mechanical keyboard, sporting Cherry's tried and true Cherry MX switches. There will be two options for the W1, Cherry MX Blue of Cherry MX Red. Blue switches are clicky and tactile, while Red switches are linear and make no noise.

Finally, for durability, this keyboard ships with PBT keycaps, which are more resilient against solvents, meaning the caps will last longer without wearing down. The Thermaltake W1 wireless mechanical keyboard is available via Thermaltake's own store for $109.99.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you currently in need of a new keyboard? What do you think of the Thermaltake W1?

CHERRY has long been a market leader when it comes to mechanical switches, often being the number one choice. Today, not only did Cherry announce that its MX Switches now have twice as much durability and longevity, but there is also a brand new switch on the way called VIOLA.

Cherry VIOLA is the first fully mechanical key switch for keyboards aimed at the lower end of the market, giving budget-oriented shoppers a fully mechanical option. The VIOLA is intended to replace the likes of rubber dome switches with a higher quality alternative with more reliability, durability and better typing feel.

The VIOLA is based on Cherry's patented V-shape contact system, which establishes an efficient connection between two pads on the circuit board. It is a solderless design, making the switches swappable, which is good news for cost and ease of replacement.

Most Cherry switches are defined as either ‘Linear' or ‘Tactile'. VIOLA sits in a new category that Cherry is calling ‘CrossLinear', essentially meaning 45 cN of actuation force is required for the 2mm pre-travel and to fully bottom out the key, actuation force ramps up to 75 cN with 4mm of total key travel.

As you might expect, Cherry is also making VIOLA switches compatible with RGB LEDs, so there could be a new wave of cheaper RGB mechanical keyboards on the way, all still carrying the Cherry logo.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru Says: We've seen various companies attempt to bring mechanical-style switches to low-cost market segments, often resulting in a ‘mem-chanical' switch, VIOLA seems to be the first to offer a fully mechanical switch in this market segment, so it will be interesting to see how peripheral makers embrace this new switch and what sort of prices we can expect.

CES 2020 has seen plenty of new mechanical gaming keyboards being launched and today Cherry, who supply the key switches for many of these new keyboards has announced an update to its MX mechanical key switch line.

Since its introduction in 1983, Cherry has been constantly developing and optimising its MX switches. In an announcement today, Cherry claims its latest MX switch improvements focus on durability, which means this generation of MX switches is capable of achieving over 100 million actuations, without suffering from quality or performance degradation.

Thanks to its experienced development team based in Germany, Cherry has been able to increase the gliding surface area on the key switch stem as well as include eight guide rails on the inside of the switch housing, this results in a wobble-free operation for increased durability. Cherry has named this new design “Hyperglide”, which doubles the number of guaranteed actuations an MX switch is capable of in its lifespan.

Cherry MX Red, Black, Brown and Speed Silver switches all feature this new update which allows more than 100 million keystrokes without loss of quality, compared to the 50 million of the previous generation. The new design has been extensively tested in the company’s laboratory to verify these performance figures.

In addition to the stem upgrade, Cherry’s Gold Crosspoint technology has been reworked too. A new modification includes an update to the bending radius of the contact to optimise bending force. Since 1st November 2019, all MX switches have been manufactured using advanced machinery that refines the production process and has resulted in a significant reduction in switch bounce time of less than one millisecond.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: If you are thinking of purchasing a new mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches soon, check the packaging to see if they keyboard features these updated switches. Package labelling should indicate if the switch lifespan is guaranteed for 100 million operations and less than one millisecond bounce time.

With its tiny 60% form factor and included carry case, Cooler Master has definitely designed the SK621 with portability in mind – but the question remains: how many users actually travel with a keyboard on a regular basis?

Even if easy portability isn't on your list of requirements, the SK621's feature list is still pretty impressive with Bluetooth connectivity, RGB lighting, and Cherry MX RGB Low Profile switches. Is it enough to justify the £139.99 price?

ASUS ROG is no stranger to peripherals, with different options to suit a range of budgets. This week, the ROG team is launching a new mechanical keyboard, targeting high-end FPS gamers.

The ROG Strix Scope has been spotted before, after being briefly announced at CES this year under the name ‘ROG Strix CTRL'. The name has changed but the core feature remains the same. In this keyboard, Asus has implemented an extra-wide Ctrl key to help those that regularly miss the key and accidentally shift or the Windows key. The ROG Strix Scope has some other notable features too, including an ‘instant privacy' button that mutes all audio and hides on-screen apps with one key press.

You can also use a quick toggle to switch Function keys from media controls to traditional functions. As you would expect, this keyboard makes use of Asus Aura RGB lighting.

Given that this is a high-end keyboard, it uses an aluminium face plate. It also comes available in a variety of Cherry MX switch options, including Red, Brown, Blue, Black, Silent Red and Speed Silver.

The Asus ROG Strix Scope keyboard will be available later this month. The MSRP is set to be £149.99.

KitGuru Says: The Strix Scope looks like a really nice keyboard with some fairly interesting features. Although I do wonder if its enough to justify a £150 price tag. Are any of you looking to get a new mechanical keyboard this year? Would you be interested in the Strix Scope?

It has been just over a year since we first saw a demo of Cooler Master's ‘Aimpad' technology, and today we finally have our hands on a keyboard that features the new tech. Aimpad takes 8 keys on the mechanical MK850 keyboard and, using infrared lighting, it allows them to be pressure sensitive. The analog control is similar to that of a console controller, allowing gamers to make slight adjustments to speed or direction.

This all sounds very exciting as the MK850 could be the start of the next evolution of gaming keyboards. But does it actually give an advantage or is it just a gimmick? And do the other features justify the hefty £200 asking price?

Design and build quality:

The MK850 from Cooler Master is a full size mechanical keyboard. With the removable wrist rest it has quite a large footprint sat on my desk. The wrist rest itself attaches to the keyboard via a set of reasonably strong magnets that do a good job of holding it in place. It's made of mostly plastic but is quite attractive to look at with the faux leather surface and the hexagonal Cooler Master logo embossed into the centre. It was very comfortable to use as the entire surface works like a padded cushion, and I think it is a really nice addition to this keyboard.

The front of the keyboard does look rather premium with its brushed aluminium faceplate that creates a nice contrast against the matte black keycaps. You also get the option of some additional eye catching keycaps – a whole bunch of them in fact! There's 18 of them to kit out the WASD, QERF, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, ESC and arrow keys in Cooler Master purple.

The overall design of the MK850 is very sleek and the neutral colour scheme means it should look at home with any set up. Each of the corners are squared off in a way that is very reminiscent of the Cooler Master logo and the entire chassis is quite thin and low profile as the keys are raised off the body, floating keycap style. This allows the backlight to shine out and create a nice reflection off that brushed aluminium.

The body in general doesn’t feel quite as solid as I was expecting probably because there is quite a bit of plastic but it still maintains a premium aesthetic and it feels sturdy to type on with little flex to the body.

Functionality and features:

Across the top of the keyboard you have a little bit of extra functionality with 2 scroll wheels on this keyboard. By default, one works as volume control, the other changes the RGB backlight brightness. To the right of the wheels you find a set of dedicated media keys and a button that immediately shuts off the RGB backlighting for a more stealthy approach. I was disappointed that these dedicated keys don't light up like the rest of the keyboard. Not just for aesthetics, but it also makes them a little harder to find quickly in low light.

You’ll also find 2 USB ports which is super handy for plugging in a USB stick or other peripherals. I was surprised to find that this keyboard only has the 1 USB connector which is beneficial for not clogging up the USB ports on the back of your PC, and even better is that the cable is not only braided but also removable and it uses a USB C connector! Thank you to Cooler Master for finally being one of the first to move away from Micro USB.

Flipping the keyboard over, the back is mostly made out of plastic but I really like the different cable routing options on this keyboard. There are 3 different slots that allow for different cable management solutions depending on your desired desk layout. Changing the height of the MK850 is easily achieved with the two large flip out feet. I really welcome their chunky form factor as they feel very stable with no risk of sliding around or flipping down suddenly in the heat of battle.

I don't think it will be going away any time soon so of course the MK850 comes with fully customisable RGB lighting. It comes through at a decent brightness that shows up even in direct sunlight and you also get a little bonus RGB strip along the bottom of the keyboard. Although, unfortunately, this strip does get covered if you opt to use the wrist rest. The RGB lighting has multiple lighting modes and effects with loads of possibilities. It can all be adjusted using the Cooler Master Portal software or the onboard on-the-fly system.

I think this keyboard has more onboard functionality that I have ever seen on a keyboard before. It's almost to the point of being a bit over complicated but it’s great for those of you that really hate downloading software as with the FN key you can literally do everything. It does definitely take some learning but you can switch & reset profiles, record macros, lock the windows key, switch Aimpad profiles, and not just scroll through RGB effects but create and edit them in detail.

What does slightly bug me though is that the software and keyboard seem to work independently. Any macros recorded don’t show up in the software and the same goes for any RGB lighting changes. Switching between different Aimpad profiles or changing the sensitivity doesn’t seem to have much effect either. I would prefer if the keyboard and software worked together in harmony.

The mechanical switches used are Cherry MX Red switches. To me this makes sense as they are very popular and great for gaming. Part of this decision is also due to the Aimpad technology, which is not able to work with a tactile switch and the Cherry MX Reds are of course linear.

The keys are raised off the body of the keyboard but I didn’t find them to have much wobble and the spacing and layout is pretty standard. The font on each keycap is clear and easy to read but keycaps themselves are pretty basic. This isn't normally an issue but considering the high price point I would like to see Cooler Master supply their flagship keyboard with superior PBT keycaps.

During CES in January, Cooler Master gave us a sneak preview of the new keyboards set to come out this year. The MK850 is the most exciting of the bunch, featuring pressure sensitive ‘Aimpad' technology. Now, the MK850 is ready for its time in the spotlight, with the keyboard launching this month.

The MK850 is described as the “world's first mechanical keyboard, using Cherry MX switches, capable of sensing exactly how far down you press the key”. This is intended to add additional control, although we don't yet know how much in-game support this will get. Aimpad is precision control technology, similarly to what you would find in an Xbox game pad, where how far you push the analogue stick determines movement speed.

One example Cooler Master gives is that in driving games, Aimpad can be used to make smoother turns, or to ease in to curves by only pressing the key in a little, rather than bottoming it out.

Aside from the Aimpad keys, the MK850 is shaping up to be a good keyboard all around, even if the pressure sensitivity doesn't interest you. The key switches are Cherry MX with 4mm of key travel. There is a removable wrist rest for additional comfort, programmable scroll wheels for extra functions and five dedicated macro keys.

There is a full suite of media control function keys, RGB lighting and the frame is aluminium, so you get a premium finish all around. The Cooler Master MK850 is going to be one of the more expensive gaming keyboards available though, with UK pre-orders starting at £209.99.

KitGuru Says: Given how Aimpad works, the Cherry MX switches here should be a linear variety, like Reds. Still, this is really cool technology that I would be interested in trying out.

In this review we take a look at the MSI Vigor GK60 gaming keyboard from MSI. The GK60 sits somewhere in the middle when it comes to features and pricing in MSI's keyboard lineup. Other features include Cherry MX Red mechanical switches, full N-key rollover and an aluminium faceplate with the option of 4 metal keycaps – all for £94.99.  But is it any good?

For years, those looking to make the jump to a mechanical keyboard have had no choice but to opt for full-sized key switches, leaving those who prefer low-profile keyboards searching elsewhere. That has begun to change recently with the introduction of Cherry MX low profile keys. Cooler Master is amongst the first keyboard makers to make the jump, offering a full suite of low-profile, mechanical boards.

There are three keyboards in the new SK lineup. The SK630 and SK650 are the first to become available, both using a slim body, Cherry MX low-profile switches and a detachable USB Type-C cable for convenience. The SK630 of a 10-keyless version, or an 80% sized board, chopping off the numpad to save on space. Meanwhile, the SK650 is a full length keyboard with the numpad included.

We've had the chance to review the SK630 already, giving it our ‘WORTH BUYING' award. At the moment, both the SK630 and the SK650 are available with Cherry MX Red low-profile switches, although we are hoping to see other options later down the line. As you would expect, these keyboards come with per-key backlighting and RGB LEDs. You can control this via software, or via function keys on the keyboard itself.

Right now, the SK630 and SK650 are the first out of the door, with the former costing £119.99 and the latter costing £159.99. Eventually, wireless and Bluetooth versions of these keyboards are going to be made available. We are also going to be seeing the launch of the SK621 later in the year, which is an even more compact 60% sized keyboard, which will be great for travelling, or for saving even more desk space.

KitGuru Says: Cooler Master has made some of my favourite mechanical keyboards in recent years. If a Cherry Blue option for the SK630 becomes available, I'll be very interested myself. Are any of you planning on buying a new keyboard this year? What do you think of the new Cooler Master SK series?

The current MK.2 keyboards in the line up – the K70 and Strafe, replace existing older models. But with the K70 MK.2 Low Profile Corsair have created something a little bit different. Low profile switches seem like an interesting choice for a desktop keyboard so we put it to the test to find out how well it performs.

For a few years now, Corsair has been dominant in the gaming keyboard market thanks to the K70 RGB and its sleek design and Cherry MX switches. Now, Corsair is revamping things with the K70 RGB MK.2 Low Profile edition and Low Profile Rapidfire edition, bringing Cherry MX switches to a smaller design.

Cherry's new MX Low Profile switches are the fastest in the lineup, actuating faster than even the Cherry MX Speed. These switches are paired with a new slim design that Corsair hopes will deliver a more comfortable typing experience while maintaining precision and performance. The Cherry MX Low Profile switch sits at just 11.9mm tall, reducing the distance required to actuate and bottom out a key press. Corsair's key caps have been trimmed down a bit too.

Cherry's low profile switches still come in multiple flavours. The K70 RGB MK.2 Low Profile will come with Cherry MX Reds, while the Rapidfire version will come with Cherry MX Speed versions. Both are linear switches, so key presses will be quieter to something like a Cherry MX Blue or Brown. If you want to learn more about different mechanical switch types, then you can check out our full guide.

As expected, Corsair has stuck with the brushed aluminium frame and media controls for these new K70 versions. However, the new low profile switches and keycaps have been designed to increase LED diffusion, allowing the RGB lights to shine brighter than before with more vivid colours. All of the RGB lighting continues to be customisable via Corsair's iCUE software, which will also grant access to custom key remapping and macros.

For those interested, here is the full spec-sheet:

  • CHERRY MX Low Profile RGB Red (K70 RGB MK.2 LOW PROFILE) or CHERRY MX Low Profile RGB Speed (K70 RGB MK.2 LOW PROFILE RAPIDFIRE)
  • Anodized Aluminum Frame
  • Multicolor, Per-Key RGB Backlighting
  • Detachable Palm Rest Included
  • Dedicated Volume and Multimedia Controls
  • USB 2.0 Type-A Pass-Through Port
  • Textured Replacement WASD and QWERDF Keycaps
  • 8MB Onboard Profile Storage
  • Windows Lock Button
  • 100% Anti-Ghosting with Full Key Rollover

The Cherry MX Low Profile RGB Speed switches are exclusive to Corsair for the time being, similar to how the first round of Cherry RGB switches were exclusive to the original K70 RGB at launch.

Both versions of this new keyboard will begin shipping immediately. The standard K70 Low Profile edition will retail for £149.99. Pricing for the RAPIDFIRE version has not been revealed yet but we'll hopefully have an update on that soon.

KitGuru Says: The original K70 RGB was my favourite keyboard for a long time. I'd be interested to check the low-profile version out, although I would love to see tactile switch options made available at some point. Are any of you on the market for a new keyboard? Do you think you'll be splashing out on Corsair's latest?

MSI has been dabbling in the keyboard market for a few years now. Over time, we've seen the GK-601, the GK-701 and now MSI is launching what could be its best keyboard yet in the form of the Vigor GK80. This is a full size RGB mechanical keyboard with an aluminum body and a bunch of useful features.

Like most gaming-oriented mechanical gaming keyboards, the GK80 opts for Cherry MX red switches, and full RGB illumination, which is powered by MSI's Mystic Light software. The keyboard comes with N-Key rollover, a ‘gaming mode' that locks off the Windows key while playing and dedicated media keys. There are four metal keycaps to replace the regular WASD keys if you desire, and the box also comes with 12 rubber keycaps so you can replace other caps on the board if you wish.

We currently have a GK80 in for review, it's not finished yet, but we have some images we can share today:

If the gallery above is not appearing correctly for you, then you may need to disable Adblock. This has been known to interfere with our gallery tool.

I've spent a long time reviewing keyboards myself here at KitGuru and I'm pleased to say that two of my favorite features are present on the GK80. There is a USB passthrough on the back, which I always find useful, and there is a detachable wrist rest included, which is always a great option to have. There is even a slot on the back of the wrist rest to store your spare keycaps.

The cable on the keyboard is braided, which I personally like a lot, but some people prefer regular rubber sleeving, so that is worth keeping in mind.

The MSI GK80 will be available shortly at retailers. The MSRP is £159.99, but the actual retail price will likely vary depending on where you shop from, so it's worth looking around.

KitGuru Says: MSI's GK80 seems like a great mashup of features from some of the best gaming keyboards on the market. The keycap storage on the back of the wrist rest is particularly unique. Are many of you currently looking to pick up a new mechanical keyboard? What do you think of the MSI GK80? We'll have a full review up soon.

How could you possibly improve on a backlit mechanical IP32 rated keyboard? By adding full RGB illumination of course. Corsairs new K68 RGB not only features IP rated dust and water resistance but also makes full use of the CUE lighting software for an almost infinite number of lighting customizations. It is currently available with official Cherry MX Red switches, and for a £119.99 the added RGB lighting benefits have a lot to live up to when considering the original single colour LED K68 can be purchased for £89.99. The K68 RGB will sync with any existing corsair RGB peripherals, but does it sync with you?

Protecting your keyboard from general wear and tear over time is no easy task and no matter how hygienic you are, your keycaps tell the story. Corsair is hoping to help with this, launching its Premium Gaming PBT Double-Shot Keycaps Kit to combat fading and shining.

Usually, mechanical keyboards ship with more cost-effective ABS caps that with their thinner body and often painted finish make them cheaper and prone to eventually glisten despite rigorous cleaning habits. PBT keycaps, however are denser and matte, sporting a textured finish that helps them retain their tactile feel for longer.

“Corsair double-shot keycaps are formed in a special two-shot mold process to ensure long-lasting durability and performance,” explains Corsair. “Unlike traditional keycaps which are painted and then etched, the lettering on double-shot keycaps is physically molded into the body of each keycap, with two interlocking pieces combining to ensure that they will never fade or become illegible over time.”

Currently, the Double-Shot keycaps officially support Corsair models K95, K70, K65, K66, K63, and Strafe, however for those wanting to chance it, they potentially fit other board sporting Cherry MX Key Switches. Lighting enthusiasts need not worry as the process doesn’t impede on lighting at all.

Currently Corsair is offering the Double-Shot keycaps in full sets of black and white for a price of $50 each.

KitGuru Says: The Double-Shot keycaps would be perfect in a job that requires a lot of typing, editing or, of course, gaming. I might have to pick some up myself. Are you interested in Corsair’s new accessory? Do you prefer the black or the white keycaps?

Cherry has been the dominant switch manufacturer for mechanical keyboards for the best part of 30 years and if this year's CeBIT show is anything to go by, that doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Not only did it have its switches in most boards in attendance, but it's looking to develop a shorter travel switch, for better use in laptops and small form factor designs.

cherry05

As much as Cherry might be the big name in mechanical switches though, it hasn't iterated on its designs that much over the years. It has its standard switch line up, but the changes have come more from without Cherry than within. Recently, as other manufacturers have been designing their own switches – often we're told, when Cherry cannot meet production demand – we've seen shorter travel switches make appearances.

cherry02 cherry03

We reviewed the MX 6.0 last year and quite liked it

We really liked some of them, but Cherry hasn't offered anything like that just yet. That may not be the case for long though, as getting its switches into some of the mechanical-equipped notebooks out there is important for Cherry and cutting back on travel distance can mean fitting them into much thinner frames.

cherry01

For now though, full-travel mechanical notebooks are available. MSI was seen at CeBIT showing off one such design, known as the Titan.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I'm a big fan of Cherry MX Brown switches for just about anything, but if Cherry can make a comfortable, central-LED, RGB, tactile mechanical switch, with low travel distance, it could well take the crown.

While there has been no shortage of RGB keyboards over the last year, there has been a distinct lack of RGB keyboards with Cherry MX switches. Fortunately, it looks like that is starting to change as Cooler Master is launching two new keyboards today- the Master Keys Pro S and Master Keys Pro L, both of which make use of Cherry's RGB switches. Today, we are taking a look at the S model, which makes use of a ten keyless compact design.

MasterKeys Pro S (3)

While most RGB keyboards have made users choose between highly customizable lighting or high-quality Cherry switches, the Master Keys Pro S delivers the best of both worlds, all in a compact design that saves space on your desk.

Features and Specifications:

  • Cherry MX Brown Switches.
  • RGB 16.8 million color lighting.
  • On the fly profile and macro support.
  • Anti-ghosting.
  • N-key rollover.
  • Detachable cable.

G.Skill only recently entered the peripheral game, but it made big strides in 2015 with some of our favourite peripherals of the year coming from that camp. So it's good to hear that it plans to stay in the keyboard business, with the announcement of a new addition to that same Ripjaws range, the KM780R.

Much like the KM780, the R variant is a stripped back version, without the additional keycaps, carry case or cap remover tool. This all means that G.Skill can offer the whole thing at a reduced price point, even with its media keys, backlighting, mechanical switches and back-end software.

Buyers also have a choice of Red, Brown or Blue Cherry MX switches.

The price in the U.S. has been reduced by $10 from the standard KM780, to $160 for the RGB model and $120 for single colour backlighting. Unfortunately there is no pricing or availability information for the UK just yet.

KitGuru Says: Although it's almost identical to the Corsair K70, G.Skill's KM780 RGB is what I'm typing this news piece on. Its brown switches, solid build quality and volume scroll wheel finally had be replace my Steelseries 7G. That was a sad day.

Corsair has produced some fantastic looking keyboards in the last year. Adding to that line up now is a variant on its highly praised STRAFE design – the Silent. This board features the same RGB backlighting, media keys and attachable wrist rest, but with modified mechanical switches to make them that much quieter when you are typing.

Corsair assures us that doing so has not affected the responsiveness of the Cherry MX switches and in-fact thanks to the inclusion of gold connectors they may even be faster than before – which considering this review model sports modified mechanical switches akin to Cherry MX Reds, is plenty fast indeed.

corsairstrafesilent
Corsair STRAFE SILENT RGB Features:

  • Cherry MX “Silent” switches.
  • Per-key backlighting offers high-level customisation.
  • Fully programmable keys for remapping.
  • USB port for connect-through.
  • Textured and coloured keycaps for comfort and control.
  • Gaming circuitry gives 100 per cent anti-ghosting.
  • Easy access to media with built-in media keys.

The Corsair Gaming STRAFE Silent may not look much different then the standard STRAFE. It has all of the same features and back-end software perks with the addition of the quieter switches, which Corsair brands in a class of their own. Now when you go to buy a STRAFE RGB keyboard, you can get it with Cherry MX Red, Brown or MX Silent switches.

But what makes these work differently than others?

switchtype

The Cherry MX Silent switches are built much like a standard switch, but they also feature a pair of “component tappets” to reduce the impact of the key at the base of the switch. That base, we are told is made from a patented “glass fibre,” which also helps cut back on noise output.

Cherry MX switches are often seen as the gold standard for mechanical keyboards and have been for upwards of 30 years. However due to limited production capacities, some keyboard makers have started to go elsewhere or design their own switches, so Cherry is starting to innovate. Its new switch design is called the MX RGB Nature White and it features a new actuation force and the transparent casing that has become common place with some manufacturers.

Indeed addressing the illumination issue posed by Cherry MX switches seems to have been the main point of the new switch, which has a clear surround-casing as standard. Traditional MX switches have had black plastic casings, which caused problems illuminating the entire key cap as backlighting LEDs are mounted off-centre. Clear casings have been added by some manufacturers to keyboards like the Corsair K70 and the GSkill KM780 in the past, so it only makes sense that Cherry would do something official with that design.

naturewhite

There is also talk of a built in lens to improve light scattering throughout the switch, which should further aid illumination issues on keycaps with multiple indicators.

To help make the switch stand out a little more among its predecessors too, the actuation force for the RGB Nature White's is 55 cN, which puts it in the middle of the 45 cN Cherry MX Reds and the 60 cN Cherry MX blacks.

Ducky has been announced as an official launch partner of Cherry's, so expect the first RGB Nature White switches to show up in the Ducky Shine-5.

KitGuru Says: I don't know if this needed a whole new switch. I would rather see Cherry add clear surrounds to all of its existing switches or better yet, figure out a way to place the LED centrally, as clear surrounds only go part way to solving the backlighting coverage problem.

Corsair Gaming dismayed long-time fans last year when it dropped its famous sales logo in favour of a tribal tattoo. Following fan outrage however, it has made a comeback on the latest line up of products, like the STRAFE gaming keyboard that we are looking at today. Featuring everyone's favourite Cherry MX switches, textured key-cap replacements and a refined red key-bed, the STRAFE still sports a high price tag, but comes with many of the bells and whistles of Corsair's flagship boards.

But are they enough to give this keyboard a solid recommendation? That is what we are here to find out.

strafe2

Although this is more of a mid-range board than the Corsair Gaming flagship products we have seen previously, it does come with some unique features – most obviously the coloured and textured replacement keycaps. While they may not offer much in the way of a functional change, they do help this board stand out from its contemporaries. Its clean look too is quite different from what else is out there.

Features

  • Cherry MX Switches (Red).
  • Per-key backlighting offers high-level customisation.

  • USB port for connect-through.
  • Textured and coloured keycaps for comfort and control.
  • Gaming circuitry gives 100 per cent anti-ghosting.

When MicroStar International (MSI) introduced its truly monstrous GT80 gaming laptop last year, the company clearly impressed the whole world with a fully-fledged mechanical keyboard as well as with extreme performance such system could deliver. What MSI did not say last November were exact specifications of the system as well as its starting price. At the CES 2015, MSI finally announced pricing details, without any surprises, the price tag is as extreme as performance.

As reported, the MSI GT80 Titan laptop in its maximum configuration is powered by quad-core Intel Core i7-4980HQ “Haswell” microprocessor as well as two GeForce GTX 980M 8GB in SLI mode. The system is expected to feature up to 24GB of DDR3L memory (up to 32GB possible with 16GB SO-DIMMs), up to four M.2 solid-state drives in RAID 0 mode for maximum performance and a 1TB hard disk drive with 7200rpm spindle speed for maximum amount of storage. The system is also equipped with SteelSeries mechanical keyboard with MX Brown switches, Qualcomm Atheros Killer DoubleShot Pro network solution that supports Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi 802.11ас (and gives priority to traffic generated by games), Dynaudio and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio system, 1080p webcam and so on. All the modern interfaces like USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort and HDMI are also present. Check out our video preview of the MSI GT80 Titan.

msi_gt_80_gt80_titan

While the system’s internals seem to offer the best what the technology could possibly provide today, MSI could not find a proper ultra-high-definition (4K, 3840*2160) or even a beyond full-high-definition 18.4” display panel. As a consequence, the GT80 Tital will ship with a Samsung’s PLS display with full-HD (1920*1080) resolution, something that is not good enough for an extreme gaming machine nowadays. Over time, MSI can upgrade the monitor of its GT80 Titan, but only when and if appropriate panels become available.

One of the key features of the GT80 Titan is its easy-to-open chassis, something that allows great upgradeability when current top-notch components become outdated. While it is easy to obtain new SO-DIMM memory modules, M.2 solid-state drives or 2.5” hard disk drives and upgrade them at home, it is relatively hard to get graphics processing units in MXM form-factor. To actually enable its customers to upgrade the key component of any gaming PC, MSI teamed up with its system integrator partners – such as iBuyPower, XoticPC, GentechPC, and PowerNotebook in the U.S. – who agreed to upgrade systems eventually. Owners will have to ship their machines to the aforementioned companies and pay for the upgrades, after completing the job, they will ship the machines back to the owners along with old GPUs, reports AnandTech. It remains to be seen how everything will work in other parts of the world, but, at least, it is clear that MSI wants its system to be upgradeable.

Since mechanical keyboard requires a lot of space for switches, the GT80 Titan is 49.1mm thick and weighs 4.7 kilograms. Due to its dimensions, weight and minimal battery life, it is unlikely that the system will ever be used as a laptop to work on the road. Still, it is remarkable how much performance MSI has managed to squeeze into a mobile form-factor.

msi_gt80_titan

While MSI’s GT80 Titan laptop will offer remarkable performance, especially for a PC in clamshell form-factor, its price will also be one of the highest in the industry. The GT80 Titan will be commercially available next week with the starting price of $3299, reports PCPerspective; a version for $3499 includes the faster Core i7-4940MX processor. Default configuration is unknown, but it is unlikely that they sport the best memory, storage and graphics options.

KitGuru Says: Looks like PC gaming hardware is getting more and more expensive. Last year AMD and Nvidia rolled-out $1500 and $2999 graphics cards, respectively. Looks like MSI wants to test how high it can go with a gaming laptop.

Notebooks with huge displays designed for gamers and professionals have always been somewhat controversial: while they did provide desktop-class performance, they never offered comfort of desktop PCs and were not truly mobile or upgradeable. As a result, in the recent years the popularity of such PCs significantly decreased. Nonetheless, there are companies who try to innovate and make huge laptops viable again.

MicroStar International on Friday officially introduced its unique GT80 Titan laptop with 18.4” display that combines incredible performance with easy upgradeability and mechanical keyboard, for the first time in history. The MSI GT80 Titan is to be powered by quad-core Intel Core i7 “Haswell” microprocessor for laptops and two GeForce GTX 980M graphics adapters in SLI configuration. The system is expected to feature up to 32GB of DDR3L memory, M.2 solid-state drives in RAID 0 mode for maximum performance and a 1TB hard disk drive with 7200rpm spindle speed for maximum amount of storage.

msi_gt80_titan_1

The unique thing about MSI’s GT80 Titan is a mechanical keyboard with red backlighting based on Cherry MX Brown switches and made by SteelSeries. The keyboard also sports rather unique touchpad that can act like a keypad as well. Since mechanical keyboard require a lot of space for switches, the GT80 Titan is 49.1mm thick and weighs 4.7 kilograms. According to MSI, this is not the world’s thickest notebook, though. Many gaming laptops are even thicker and weight even more despite of the fact that they have membrane keyboards.

“As the first of its kind, the MSI GT80 Titan takes a step into the future by integrating a proper mechanical keyboard with Cherry switches into the 18-inch mobile gaming beast,” said Eric Kuo, vice president of global sales and marketing at MSI Notebook. “Apart from this, the GT80 also features Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics, Intel's best and latest mobile CPU as well as our usual selection of carefully developed MSI gaming technologies.”

Another unique feature of the GT80 Titan is the fact that its hardware can be easily accessed by removing the front-panel of the laptop. This allows end-users to easily upgrade the system or clean the dust from the inside. Typically, upgrading notebooks requires a lot of hassle and skills.

msi_gt80_titan

MSI remains tight-lipped about the rest of the GT80 Titan’s specifications. The 18.4” display of the laptop will feature at least full-HD resolution (1920*1080), but it is logical to expect the company to provide its customers a choice and offer screens with up to 4K (3840*2160) resolution. While MSI yet has to confirm that, it is possible that the GT80 Titan integrates Qualcomm Atheros Killer DoubleShot Pro network solution that supports Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi 802.11ас (and gives priority to traffic generated by games), Dynaudio and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio system, 1080p webcam and so on. Quite naturally the laptop will feature USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort and HDMI interfaces. It is unknown whether the unit also features an optical disc drive.

Keeping in mind the weight and the dimensions of the MSI GT80 Titan, it is hard to expect its owners to carry it with themselves every day. The notebook will be used as a replacement for a desktop-type PC and will likely sit on a desk 99 per cent of the time. While the system most likely has a battery, MSI has not revealed its capacity.

MSI GT80 Titan is projected to be commercially available later this year or early in 2015. The price will vary depending on configuration, but do not expect it to be anywhere close to affordable, extreme performance comes at a cost.
