The past few years has seen the number of video games being adapted into other mediums balloon in quantity, with pretty much any and all successful franchises now having a shot at the silver screen. Two celebrities which have not shied away from such opportunities are Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. After portraying Nathan Drake and Mario respectively, the two will seemingly be coming together for a Jak and Daxter film.

As reported by insider ‘MyTimeToShineHello’ the film industry leaker took to Twitter to make the claim, saying “Tom Holland to play Jak, Chris Pratt eyed to voice Daxter in live action Jak and Daxter movie from Sony directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Uncharted).”

While certainly an unconventional pick to play the duo, both actors have as mentioned been in successful video game adaptations (one much more successful than the other). Furthermore, the two have been in a number of projects together including Avengers Infinity War; Endgame and Pixar’s Onwards.

Of course, nothing is confirmed and should all be taken with a pinch of salt until announced by Sony themselves, but it seems as though we will begin to see more and more video game characters being taken over by Hollywood stars.

For a franchise with relatively little cache in today’s day and age, perhaps attaching two massive celebrities to the project will help to boost eyes on Jak & Daxter. We will have to wait and see.

Back in early October Nintendo released the first trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, with us getting a look at Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser. The trailer kept things quite vague however, with a majority of the film’s star-studded cast not appearing in it. Finally however, we have now gotten a look at Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and more thanks to a brand new trailer.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s second trailer was first shown off as part of a dedicated Nintendo Direct – where as stated by the company beforehand – no video game news was announced.

That said, we did get a much greater look at the various characters and voice actors who will be making an appearance in the film, including the likes of Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.

The first trailer, released back in October, only showcased the voicing talents of Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser and a bit of Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and so it is good to see how the remainder of the cast sounds.

This trailer also showed much more of the Mario world, with the characters paying homage to a number of classic and iconic franchise moments, including Mario Kart and Rainbow Road – to name just a few.

Of course, it is still too early to judge whether the casting choices were correct, or even whether the film itself will be good. That being said, I certainly plan to find out when the Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to cinemas in April 2023.

After years of speculation and months of waiting, we finally have our first look at the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Set to arrivie in cinemas on the 7th of April 2023, fans have been given their first look at Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser and more.

The trailer begins with an uninterrupted two-minute-long scene which sees Bowser menacingly approach an ice castle, only to then burn it down using his – rather powerful – flame breath in service of getting his hands on a Super Star.

We then get to finally hear Chris Pratt as Mario, and after months of wondering what he might sound like – with both Pratt and other executives commenting on the matter – it turns out Mario will just sound like a regular dude, with very little in the way of any relation to Mario as performed by Charles Martinet.

Chris Pratt aside, the remainder of the cast shown seem to have taken heavy inspiration from the video games, with the likes of Bowser and Toad sounding as fans might have expected. The trailer concludes with Mario finding himself in the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time, meaning the film is likely to be an origin story.

Chris Pratt’s somewhat disappointing voice aside, the Mario Movie looks to be quite fun, and with Nintendo’s stringent focus on quality, hopefully this is indeed the case.

Ever since it was first announced all the way back in 2018, fans have been curious to see what the Super Mario Bros. Movie looks like – especially with Chris Pratt taking on the titular character’s voice. Finally, the time has come, with Nintendo announcing a Mario Movie-focused Direct.

Making the announcement on Twitter (alongside tweeting what might be the film’s poster), the official Nintendo account said “Tune in at 21:05 (UK time) on 06/10 for a #NintendoDirect: The Super Mario Bros. Movie presentation introducing the world premiere trailer for the upcoming film (no game information will be featured).”

It is interesting to see the console manufacturer stress that no game information will be provided – though with it having been half a decade since the release of the last mainline Mario game (Odyssey), this disclaimer is understandable.

Currently, little is known about the upcoming Mario film, though we do know that it is planned to release in April of next year. Of course, the cast list for the film was also shared, with Chris Pratt taking on the role of Mario; Charlie Day as Luigi; Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach; Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.

With such an interesting cast list, many eyes are likely to be on this upcoming Direct, wanting a first look at these actors’ performances.

Recently, the founder of animation studio Illumination discussed Chris Pratt and his role as Mario in the upcoming film based on the iconic video game franchise. In the wake of this discourse, Chris Pratt himself addressed fans, claiming that his rendition of Mario will be “unlike anything you've heard in the Mario world.”

The publication Variety managed to nab an interview with film star Chris Pratt during the premiere of one of the actor’s other projects, and asked him about his work on the upcoming Mario film, to which he responded:

“I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear”. Giving just a few more details on what fans can expect, Pratt said “It’s an animated voiceover narrative. It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.”

Claiming it will be “unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before” is interesting indeed, especially as Mario has taken on multiple different voices in the past.

Until now, fans have been expecting for Chris Pratt to either emulate the Italian tones of Mario’s video game voice actor ‘Charles Martinet’ or to adopt a Brooklyn accent – similar to that found within the live-action Mario film from the 90s.

If Mario’s voice is indeed “unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before,” it will be interesting to see how long-time fans of the Italian plumber react. The Mario film will release in April 2023.

Video game films are a hot commodity currently, with all manner of franchises taking a transmedia approach to their intellectual properties. The announcement that Chris Pratt would be voicing the iconic Mario in an upcoming film surprised many, though according to the studio “when people hear Chris Pratt's performance, the criticism will evaporate.”

Chris Meledandri, the founder of animation studio Illumination, recently discussed the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie at CineEurope in Barcelona, claiming that:

“When people hear Chris Pratt's performance, the criticism will evaporate, maybe not entirely — people love to voice opinions, as they should. I'm not sure this is the smartest defense, but as a person who has Italian-American heritage, I feel I can make that decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian-Americans… I think we're going to be just fine.”

There are many unknowns when it comes to the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the interesting cast of actors chosen for the film has led to concerns by some.

While Meledandri’s statement  offers some positivity, it is understandably difficult for fans to picture the likes of Chris Pratt voicing Mario – especially after voice actor Charles Martinet has been doing it for so long. Hopefully we get to see a trailer soon.

We have witnessed a recent resurgence in video game-based films, from the highly successful Detective Pikachu to the even more successful Sonic the Hedgehog and its recent sequel. One of the biggest mascots in gaming – Mario – was set to get his own film later this year, though it has now been delayed to Spring 2023.

Making the announcement on the official Nintendo of America Twitter account, the father of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto said “This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America.”

Miyamoto concluded by offering “My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait”. No reason was given for the delay, though there are a number of potential possibilities ranging from the film’s distributors not wanting to clash with the upcoming release of Avatar 2, to the creative team simply not being happy with the results so far, thus needing more time to polish the game.

The delay of the first Sonic the Hedgehog film ultimately led to a much-improved final product capable of standing tall as the first entry in a new film franchise. Perhaps Nintendo and animation studio Illumination are simply taking notes from the success of the Sonic film. Regardless of the reason, hopefully the delay proves to be good for the film. We will have to wait and see.

Many Nintendo fans were left surprised by the announcement that Chris Pratt will voice Mario in the upcoming animated Super Mario film. One of the biggest unanswered questions is how Mario will sound. With Charles Martinet voicing the character for so long, Pratt’s rendition will be interesting to see. One thing we do know however is that he will not have an Italian Accent.

As reported by VGC, the pop culture news site toofab asked Illumination co-founder and CEO Chris Meledandri about how Chris Pratt will approach Mario’s voice.

According to Meledandri, “All I can tell you is the voice that he's doing for us and Mario is phenomenal. I can't wait for people to hear it.”

Despite not wanting to say more, Meledandri did then confirm that Pratt will not be using an Italian accent, though the reason for this will make sense in-world, saying “We cover it in the movie. So you'll see that we definitely nod to that, but that's not the tenor of the performance throughout the film.”

For almost the entirety of the character’s existence, Charles Martinet has voiced Mario with a high pitched and enthusiastic Italian accent. While it works well in the context of the games, a full length film featuring many lines of dialogue could be grating to the ears. It is therefore understandable that Pratt will not voice Mario in a similar manner. The only thing left to find out now is what voice he will use.

While film adaptations of video games have existed for decades now, we have seen a recent uptick in the number of IPs being brought from games to other mediums. Nintendo is also joining in with its upcoming Mario movie. It won’t be its last either, as more Nintendo films are on the way.

In a recent Nintendo investor presentation, Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about the current status of the Super Mario movie. According to Miyamoto (as translated by David Gibson), the film is nearly complete with them simply “working on the last bit”. Though he would never admit otherwise, Miyamoto claims to “have a very good feeling about [the Mario movie], but we are very careful not to betray customers and meet expectations.”

When asked whether any other intellectual properties were up for adaptation, Miyamoto responded “people should experience IP in variety of wats (sic). But going one by one, not say doing many IP movies at same time”.

What this seems to suggest is that while we should not expect to see a Nintendo Cinematic Universe with multiple films releasing each year, the console manufacturer – and holder of some of the most valuable IPs in gaming – will definitely be making more video game films – assuming the MArio movie succeeds.

Nintendo recently held a Direct where among the announcement of many new games and updates to older titles, the console manufacturer gave fans the first details for the upcoming Mario movie. The most surprising thing however was the reveal that Chris Pratt will play the titular Mario, with Jack Black voicing Bowser.

Nintendo officially announced the release date for the upcoming animated Mario movie, saying “Ta-da! Mario will jump into the world of motion pictures holiday 2022! Check out some of the key cast members who’ll be voicing Mario and his friends in the movie.”

The voice cast features a star studded list of actors, however many of the names attached may surprise you. Voicing Mario himself will be Chris Pratt, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking the role of Princess Peach. Charlie Day will be voicing Luigi, as Jack Black plays the villainous role of Bowser.

More characters confirmed include Keegan Michael-Key, who will voice Toad; Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong; Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong; Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and last but not least Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

While Charles Martinet was confirmed to be making a cameo in the film, it seems as though the movie will feature a heavy amount of voice acting – something Martinet has never had to do for Mario – and so the role has been passed along to Pratt.

This cast list was certainly surprising to see, and it seems to be pitching the upcoming film to a much wider audience, hoping to capture as many people thanks to this star-studded cast. Chris Pratt as Mario is certainly an interesting choice. Hopefully his take on the Italian Plumber does not end up feeling too unnatural, especially as Martinet has been lending his voice to the character for so long. We will have to wait and see when the first trailer releases.
