There has been growing concern around Sonic Frontiers, in part due to a poor gameplay showing earlier this summer, followed by a lack of updates. Fortunately, this week at Gamescom, Sega finally showed us what it has been working on.

Sonic Frontiers is officially releasing on the 8th of November for all planned platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. The game offers a mix of open-world gameplay and levels. The new story trailer also shows that the open world might not be as barren as once appeared, with different biomes, mysterious structures and more.

The narrative presented in the story trailer was surprisingly gripping. If the story can carry that through a full campaign with additional twists, turns and fan-favourite character appearances, then it may end up being one of the best Sonic stories told to date.

There is one thing I picked up on in the trailer that is concerning. At the end, we see a pre-order screen and the bonus for pre-ordering is something called an Adventure Chest, which contains a bundle of skill points and power-ups so you can get a head start. Sega hasn't confirmed microtransactions for Sonic Frontiers, but these adventure chests sure do resemble the sort of ‘time saving' microtransactions we typically see in Ubisoft games. Hopefully this is just a one-time pre-order bonus though, and not something that will be sold through an in-game store.

KitGuru Says: What do you all think of the new Sonic Frontiers trailer? Personally, I'm liking the look of the game a whole lot more than I was earlier this summer when gameplay first dropped.

Naughty Dog has confirmed that it is continuing to push for 1080p and 60 frames per second for all of its future games on the Playstation 4. The company's dedication to full HD resolution and smoother frame rates solidified after it released The Last of Us Remastered on the PS4, which garnered up plenty of praise from fans and critics alike.

Naughty Dog is currently working on its Uncharted series follow up, Uncharted 4: A Theif's End, we've seen a few impressive looking images from the game so far, including an in-engine PS4 render of Nathan Drake's face. Unfortunately though, its just a picture of a picture, rather than a proper shot.

While talking about achieving 1080p and 60 frames per second, Naughty Dog Community Manager, Arne Meyer, said: “I think that's what we want to push for with anything we're doing on this generation. That's sort of the mandate from when we were building the PS4 engine. Let's see if we can do this and hit it. We hit it with The Last of Us Remastered, so why not stick with this?”

Many Playstation owners are looking forward to the next Uncharted game. However, rumors have been floating around about a potential PS4 remaster of the original trilogy, much like the Last of Us, Meyer has addressed those rumors, stating that “I personally think it would work well, because there's a lot of attention on the studio between the success of Uncharted 2, 3 and The Last of Us. It'd be nice to give players the opportunity to go back and play the older games, and people who are new to the PlayStation platform.”

However, Meyer also noted that the team is very busy and doesn't know if they'll have the time or man power to dedicate to it any time soon: “I think that'd be great – but I have no idea how that could fall into our timeline.”

The Last of Us Remastered took around a year to create with a full, dedicated team working on it the entire time, so it's possible that Naughty Dog just doesn't have the time right now to properly re-create the first three Uncharted games for the PS4.

KitGuru Says: It's nice to see that Naughty Dog has the right idea, gamers generally tend prefer the smoother 60 frames per second experience over 30. More developers should follow in Naughty Dog's footsteps and learn that 30 frames per second does not offer a ‘cinematic feel'. Are you guys glad to see a console developer striving to hit 1080p and 60 frames per second? Do you think that Naughty Dog will manage to hit both targets like it did with The Last of Us Remastered?

Ubisoft came under fire again this week after it was revealed that Assassin's Creed Unity would run at the same sub 1080p resolution and frame rate on both the Xbox One and PS4 in order to ‘avoid debates'. Since then, developers behind the game have been trying to put a positive spin on the 30 frames per second lock.

AC:Unity World Level Design Director, Nicolas Guérin, recently told TechRadar that 30 frames per second was actually a design choice in order to give the game a more ‘cinematic' feel, he also doesn't think that pushing a 60 frames per second standard is a particularly good idea:

“At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don't think it was a good idea because you don't gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn't look like the real thing. It's a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird. So I think collectively in the video game industry we're dropping that standard because it's hard to achieve, it's twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image.”

AC Unity

Assassin's Creed Unity Creative Director, Alex Amancio, also jumped in stating that “30 was our goal, it feels more cinematic.” He then went on to say that the game “feels better for people when its at that 30 fps.”

KitGuru Says: It seems like some developers are looking to downplay the significant effect that 60 frames per second has on gameplay rather than just admitting that the new consoles don't have the horsepower. 30 frames per second is much easier to achieve on consoles but don't lie to people and claim that it somehow makes the game look or feel better. What do you guys make of this? Would you support developers trying to turn 30 frames per second in to the new gameplay standard?  How important is frame rate to you?
