Cities Skylines II is exactly one week away, with the sequel to the much-loved city building simulator set to arrive on the 24th of October. While the game was previously delayed for consoles to Spring 2024, the PC version will still launch as intended next week. That said, the team have now warned that performance may not be up to snuff initially.

In a post published on their forums, alongside the announcement that mods will come to the console version of Cities Skylines II, the team at Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive said “we've noticed the concerns raised about Cities: Skylines II performance, especially after our previous statement with raised minimum and recommended specs. As we've always believed in transparency, we'd like to further shed some light on the current state of the build.”

They continued, “Cities: Skylines II is a next-gen title, and naturally, it demands certain hardware requirements. With that said, while our team has worked tirelessly to deliver the best experience possible, we have not achieved the benchmark we targeted. In light of this, we still think for the long-term of the project, releasing now is the best way forward. We are proud of the unique gameplay and features in Cities: Skylines II, and we genuinely believe that it offers a great experience that you will enjoy.”

The team concluded by saying “We will continually improve the game over the coming months, but we also want to manage expectations on performance for the coming release. Our ambition is for Cities: Skylines II to be enjoyed by as many players as possible, and we're committed to ensuring it reaches its full potential.”

It is interesting to see Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive take this approach with Cities Skylines II, especially in the wake of the console versions’ delay and the MANY substandard PC ports released over the course of 2023. That said, it is good at the very least to see them being upfront and open about the potential performance issues. Hopefully they do manage to improve it soon after launch.

When it comes to modern city building simulators, there are very few titles which can compete with Cities: Skylines. Built as a spiritual successor to SimCity, Cities: Skylines has managed to go above and beyond the series it is based on – having now officially sold more than 12 million copies.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Cities: Skylines account said “City Builders! We're thrilled to celebrate this year's milestone of 12M copies sold & we're proud to be a market leader in the city-building genre, and we couldn't have done this without you! A huge thank you to all of our fans for your continual support!”

Launching back in March 2015 for PC, Cities: Skylines managed an impressive 250,000 copies sold during its first 24 hours. Within a week the game surpassed 500,000 copies and later hit 1 million in 1 month. Its steady success continued, surpassing 2 million copies within its first year. By year two the game had sold over 3.5 million copies.

Cities: Skylines later came to both Xbox and PlayStation in 2017, helping to push the game to 5 million copies by March 2019. Next came the Switch release in September 2018, bringing Cities: Skylines to all current home gaming platforms. Its availability, as well as the consistent and continual updates added to the game has helped to make Cities: Skylines THE city building simulator. It will be interesting to see how many more copies the game will have sold in just a few short years.

The modding community has a long history with Skyrim at this point with a ton of mods available to tweak and change every aspect of the game. However, there are still massive, impressive mods coming out to this day, the latest of which is Holds: The City Overhaul, which has been in the making for three and a half years.

The mod weighs in at 4GB in size, making it one of the largest mods you can grab for Skyrim and as the name suggests, it completely overhauls the cities in the game. The mod has rebuilt Falkreath, Winterhold and Dawnstar from scratch, making them bigger than ever before, with more people, buildings and most importantly, more personality.

Holds

The other major areas in the game like Solitude and Whiterun have also had plenty of work done to them while some additional settlements have also been added to the game but hidden out of the way so that the expansive wilderness isn't clogged up. As the mod author puts it, the aim of all of this is to “create a more memorable and diverse experience, making the cities actually feel like cities without ruining the natural and realistic design of the vanilla game”.

Work began on the mod way back in 2012 and has been worked on for a couple of hours a day since then. The mod is already off to a good start too with over 41,000 downloads and 156,000 total views so far at the time of writing. If you're still interested in Skyrim, then you can find ‘Holds: The City Overhaul', HERE.

KitGuru Says: I haven't played around with any Skyrim mods in quite a while but I must admit, this city overhaul is making me want to jump back in for a bit. Do any of you have any favourite mods from Skyrim?

Cities: Skylines launched earlier this year to great reviews, it was essentially the city builder everyone wanted Sim City to be. Now a few months later, paradox Interactive has revealed the game's first expansion, titled ‘After Dark', which will add new features, including a day and night cycle.

The idea behind ‘After Dark' is to get players to construct a “bustling city that lives and breathes at night”, or like in other city builders, things could go horribly wrong, leaving your city to “succumb to the perils and misadventures of night life”.

Since its launch, Cities: Skylines has had a wealth of mod support on the PC and some massive projects have been pulled off within the game, we've even seen entire Grand Theft Auto cities re-built. This will be the first feature extending expansion for the game though.

Currently the After Dark expansion doesn't have a release date or a price. We know for sure that the expansion will launch on the PC, Mac and Linux, though Skylines was recently announced for the Xbox One as well so we may see the expansion land there as well at some point.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoy Cities: Skylines, though I'm not much of a city builder myself, I always end up with something going horribly wrong somewhere. Did any of you play Skylines? Is there anything you would like to see added in to the expansion?

Google really does want to try and do everything, it's got driverless cars, Internet carrying balloons- heck, the company is even trying to eradicate death itself. However, apparently all of that isn't enough, as Google's CEO, Larry Page, has reportedly started up a new project, ‘Google 2.0', with plans to solve more of the world's many problems.

The CEO has reportedly been working on tackling world issues from within the company for the last year or so, with aims to build more efficient airports and a model city. In order to progress these ideas, Page has opened up a new lab and research facility, known as Google Y, which will focus on long term goals. This allows the Google X research facility to focus on future technology support.

According to The Information, these new ambitions don't seem to have any commercial considerations taken in to account, it seems like Google is just putting its money to good use.

Other ambitions for Google 2.0 include making location tracking scarily accurate, “down to the inches” and creating a new form of biometric security for devices to eventually replace the traditional password.

KitGuru Says: Google 2.0 has some grand scale projects in the works, which sound incredibly ambitious- even for a company as big as Google.  What do you guys think of Google's vision for the future?
