Codemasters, the successful developer of many leading games for the PC and console market have been hacked, the second time in recent months. The hack took place last month and unfortunately, the hackers have been able to get details of their customers.

Data downloaded indicates that email addresses, telephone numbers, encrypted passwords and order histories have been compromised from the digital distribution EStore service. User names, email addresses, birth dates, screen names, encrypted passwords, biographies, site activity details, IP addresses, XBOX Live GamerTags and newsletter preferences were also taken in the attack for members of the CodeMaster CodeM service.

Codemasters also were victims of an intrusion in May and some staff administrative user names were stolen. We would assume that those names under the initial attack have been used to mount this recent attack in June.

Codemaster issued the following statement “The Codemasters.com website will remain offline for the foreseeable future with all Codemasters.com traffic re-directed to the Codemasters Facebook page instead. A new website will launch later in the year. Unfortunately, Codemasters is the latest victim in on-going targeted attacks against numerous game companies. We assure you that we are doing everything within our legal means to track down the perpetrators and take action to the full extent of the law.”

As expected, CodeMasters are recommending that users change their passwords on services that are associated with the accounts. Extra care should be taken for scams via email, snail mail or telephone.

KitGuru says: The sources of the attack are not yet known so users should be on high alert.
