A Lulzsec hacker who has pleaded guilty to taking part in a breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment servers has been sentenced yesterday in Los Angeles to a year in prison, followed by home detention.

Cody Kretsinger, a lulzsec hacker who used the online name ‘Recursion' pleaded guilty to the offenses in April 2012. They were one count of conspiracy and another for unauthorised impairment of a protected computer as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

The 25 year old man was ordered by a U.S. district judge in Los Angeles to perform 1,000 hours of community service after his release from prison. Kretsinger said he gained access to Sony servers and passed over information he found to other members of Lulzsec who then posted it on the groups website and twitter page.

The damage to Sony was said to be $600,000.

Reuters add “Kretsinger's plea came a month after court documents revealed that Anonymous leader “Sabu,” whose real name is Hector Xavier Monsegur, had pleaded guilty to hacking-related charges and provided the FBI with information on fellow hackers.

Prosecutors have declined to say if Kretsinger was also cooperating with authorities in exchange for leniency.

Anonymous and its offshoots, including LulzSec and AntiSec, focused initially on fighting attempts at Internet regulation and the blocking of free illegal downloads, but have since taken on other targets including Scientology and the global banking system.”

Kitguru says: Kretsinger, like others found guilty of these crimes, may end up with a high profile job in network security.

We reported last week on Lulzsec hacker Cody Kretsinger, aka ‘Recursion' who could be spending up to 15 years in jail. An interesting twist in the case came to light, in that UK company HideMyAss passed over his IP address to the Feds.

A report on news site Thinq shows that Kretsinger used HideMyAss to hide his IP address. The company issued a blog post on the matter and said.

“We have received concerns by users that our VPN service was utilized by a member or members of the hacktivist group ‘lulzsec’. Lulzsec have been ALLEGEDLY been responsible for a number of high profile cases.

  • The hacking of the Sony Playstation network which compromised the names, passwords, e-mail addresses, home addresses and dates of birth of thousands of people.
  • The DDOS attack which knocked the British governments SOCA (Serious Organised Crime Agency) and other government websites offline.
  • The release of various sensitive and confidential information from companies such as AT&T, Viacom, Disney, EMI, NBC Universal, and AOL.
  • Gaining access to NATO servers and releasing documents regarding the communication and information services (CIS) in Kosovo.
  • The defacement of British newspaper websites The Sun & The Times.
  • The hacking of 77 law enforcement sheriff websites.”

They then received a court order and subsequently passed over the information to law enforcement agencies.

“At a later date it came as no surprise to have received a court order asking for information relating to an account associated with some or all of the above cases. As stated in our terms of service and privacy policy our service is not to be used for illegal activity, and as a legitimate company we will cooperate with law enforcement if we receive a court order (equivalent of a subpoena in the US).

Our VPN service and VPN services in general are not designed to be used to commit illegal activity. It is very naive to think that by paying a subscription fee to a VPN service you are free to break the law without any consequences. This includes certain hardcore privacy services which claim you will never be identified, these types of services that do not cooperate are more likely to have their entire VPN network monitored and tapped by law enforcement, thus affecting all legitimate customers.”

It would appear that law enforcement agencies used the information from HideMyAss to locate Kretsinger.

KitGuru says: The moral of the story is, if you are using companies to hide your IP to commit illegal activities then be sure to read the small print.

The authorities have arrested Cody Kretsinger, aged 23 from Arizona. He has been charged with conspiracy and the unauthorised impairment of a protected computer in conjunction with an attack in May and June.

Reuters have reported that Kretsinger was arrested yesterday by the FBI. He was apparently a member of Lulzsec – the well known group of hackers who have been targeting businesses and organisations this year. The indictment was unsealed yesterday in federal court in Los Angeles.

Kretsinger, who used the name ‘Recursion' probed into the Sony Inc. computer systems for vulnerabilities and stole confidential data, which was later posted on a LulzSec website and on the groups Twitter account.

LulzSec are known now to be affiliated with Anonymous, another high profile hacking organisation. They have made very public statements challenging the FBI and they posted a joint ‘security statement' in July.

If Kretsinger is convicted, he could spend up to 15 years in jail according to the FBI report.

The case is U.S. v. Kretsinger, 11-848, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles).

Kitguru says: Will this effect their operations?
