The British government's Department of Education, has called for new filtering and content control systems for school computers accessing the internet. Not only does it want better monitoring to make sure that no one is looking at things they shouldn't, but it wants more content blocked at the source, in order to help prevent children from being radicalised in the classroom.

The reasoning for this more aggressive stance is said to be that more children are accessing material online that the authorities feel could radicalise them. In one cited incident from earlier this year, several girls from Bethnal Green Academy flew to Syria in an attempt to become “jihadi brides,” as per Ars. However no link with school computer systems was found.

Although the proposal is only currently being consulted on, it does suggest that schools not only filter content, but monitor who is attempting to access it in order to quiz them on their activities, or more closely monitor their behaviour. This, the proposal suggests, should be possible on school equipment and on children's tablets and smartphones – though it isn't specific about how that would work.

Considering widepsread 4G and 3G connections are available in most built up areas, this seems like something that would be very difficult to achieve.

This news comes just as the likes of Sky announced that its internet services would have mandatory filtering and watershed blocks on content for all new customers, unless a specific request was made to turn it off.

KitGuru Says: Aren't there already filters in place in schools? They were always a joke to get around, but they were there. I was busted plenty of times at school by admin monitoring too. Why is this being considered a new proposal?

We had a quick chat about ‘All In One' systems in the KitGuru offices and, almost universally, the only units we had all used was an Apple iMac. Sure, HP pushed hard into this market a few years back, with Acer etc hot on their heals, but the power, styling and range of specifications was relatively limited. The latest launch from British system builder MESH, looks to change that. KitGuru prepares to get touchy-feely.

Without looking at the specs in any detail, the idea that you can buy a complete, ready to run, all-in-one (AIO) system with a 19.5″ screen for just £300, does seem like good value. We guess that's because a top of the range iPad is over £700 and entry level PCs are normally around £300.

MESH's starting price of £300 feels low, but with an AMD E-2-3000 APU, maybe it's spot on.

At the other end of the scale, the most powerful system in the range is a 27″ monster with a Core i7 processor, SSD boot drive and 2GB Radeon 8970M graphics at £1,499.

.
All of the systems are delivered free of charge and come with a 2 year collect and return warranty.

Arguably, the best value system in the range comes in at £1,050 and it's a 24″ model with 2GB nVidia GeForce GTX 860M graphics.

What caught KitGuru's eye was the fact that it boots from a 120GB SSD and then offers 1TB of mass storage.

In our experience, everything in life is made better with SSD and that's especially true for systems where some of the components have their origin in the mobile/laptop space.

The entire MESH range of All-In-One systems comes ‘Ready to Go' straight from the box and all of the units above £500 include full HD (1920×1080) resolution screens.

KitGuru says: While graphic designers might not want anyone touching their screen, the overwhelming popularity of the iPad and its contemporaries has created an entire generation of users that EXPECTS to be able to reach out and manipulate their online world with a finger. Adding more hardware options must be a good thing and, so far, the pricing seems pretty reasonable.

Let us know what you think about the All-In-One revolution over on Facebook.

UK system builder, MESH Computers, has decided to get into the spirit of March Madness with a limited edition promo of their own this weekend. KitGuru scribbles down the code that's just dropped into our collective inboxes and evaluates the value.

From the first moment they opened their doors for business, back in 1987, MESH Computers has had a strong focus on value.

Back in the late nineties, that meant a lot because companies like Dell were Intel-only houses and AMD was only just beginning to muscle its way into the performance desktop space with Athlon etc. MESH went almost 100% AMD and, for a while, captured a serious chunk of the market – shipping over 9,000  PCs a month.

In 2014, the market is completely different – especially with the advent of tablets, notebooks, smartphones and smart TVs – but there is still a hardcore of consumers that want desktop systems, with good specifications at sensible prices.

If that's you, then maybe the ‘4 Day Voucher‘  from MESH will be interesting. Click the image for full details.

KitGuru says: If you're not in the market for a £500 PC, then getting another 10% off won't matter. If a low cost PC is exactly what you want, then every little helps.

In the old days, the January sales used to start, well, in January. Over time, these deals were pulled in earlier and earlier – with the Boxing Day sale replacing January as the kick off point. Now it seems January starts on 19th December. KitGuru packs a sleeping back and Thermos, ready to camp out for bargains.

As the average price of the PC continues to slide, the actual drops are getting smaller. Because there is a fundamental value (and, therefore, cost) to every component required to make a system, the absolute lowest price you can pay for something has been levelling off. In the world of laptops, we saw this when we recently compared a Toshiba system from 2 years ago – to the spec/price combination available today.

But desktop PCs are still increasing their value offer.

This morning, we received an update from London-based PC maker, MESH Computers, with its new prices. The deals start with a full PC, including 8GB of memory, 1TB drive and Windows operating system for just £299. Hard to argue with that.

Entry level at £299 seems like a bargain - but if you click the graphic and investigate all of the offers, you will also find deals right through to an Intel Core i7 3930k. And it's not even January.

.

KitGuru says: Whether you're looking to replace a system for your family or updating the kit in your office, complete systems with Windows OS from £299 seems worth a closer look. We asked, and they all comes with a 3 year warranty.
