Sony has had a good run of PC releases lately, with each new game launch being incredibly popular on Steam. Unfortunately, it seems the recent release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves did not perform as well as other titles and currently sits as the lowest performer of the bunch.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection was always in an awkward position. While it is great to see Uncharted 4 and its standalone expansion running on PC, Sony chose not to port over the original trilogy. It seems this move had a knock-on effect on sales, with the collection only garnering close to 11,000 peak concurrent players at launch (via VGC), a far cry from the 73,000 players that played God of War when that launched, or the 66,000 players that logged into Spider-Man Remastered.

Previous releases like Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone also garnered significantly higher peak concurrent player counts, sitting at 56,000 and 27,000 respectively. Each other major release was the first entry in a series, while Sony is asking PC players to jump into Uncharted on what is essentially the final chapter of Nathan Drake's adventure.

While there are fewer players jumping into Uncharted, the game does have mostly positive user reviews on Steam. Additionally, it is worth noting that this game was originally supposed to come out much earlier in the year, but was delayed all the way to a busy October season, with newer games just on the horizon. This also likely had an impact on the number of players jumping in at launch.

It has been roughly two weeks since Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted on Netflix and so far, the show has done wonders for the reputation of the game too. Following the success of the show, many have flocked back to Cyberpunk 2077, and now, the game has surpassed The Witcher 3 in all-time peak concurrent players.

Cyberpunk 2077 did not garner the same level of acclaim that The Witcher 3 did at launch. However, after several major patches, a next-gen console launch, and a potential Anime of the Year contending spin-off show, the game has seen a huge resurgeance in players and popularity. Over the weekend, the game surpassed 104,000 concurrent players on Steam – surpassing The Witcher 3's all-time peak, which sits at 103,329 players.

Cyberpunk 2077 has also had an additional flood of positive reviews on Steam, bringing the game's overall rating to ‘Mostly Positive', based on over 421,000 individual user reviews.

Last week, CD Projekt Red revealed that across all platforms, Cyberpunk 2077 had over 1 million players each day. Currently, patches and content updates for the game are on a break. CD Projekt Red is planning to release Update 1.7, the next major patch, in 2023, which will include a revamped police system in-game. The upcoming expansion ‘Phantom Liberty' is also releasing in 2023.

KitGuru Says: There were a lot of doubts that CD Projekt Red would be able to get to this point, but the studio persevered and it is now paying off greatly. Have any of you revisited Cyberpunk 2077 over the last couple of weeks? What do you think of the game now, a couple of years removed from the bad launch?

After several delays, PlatinumGames and Square Enix officially launched Babylon's Fall today – Platinum's first attempt at a live-service style game. Unfortunately, the game appears to be a flop on PC, with launch player numbers barely scraping past 1,000 concurrents.

There has been some concern for Babylon's Fall for a while now, particularly after recent gameplay showcases. The game's high £94.99 price tag for the deluxe edition and premium currency microtransactions also set off alarm bells leading up to release.

At launch, Babylon's Fall has only managed to round up 1,188 concurrent players at its peak, with 906 players currently in the game right now, according to SteamDB's figures. Another sign that the game has not sold well is the number of reviews on the Steam Store page. At the moment, Babylon's Fall only has 75 total reviews on Steam, whereas many major releases will end up with thousands of reviews on launch day.

Currently, Babylon's Fall carries a ‘mixed' overall rating on Steam, with many calling the game a “cash grab” and pointing out the many “free to play” game elements that have snuck their way into a full-priced product. Square Enix has been a little crazy when it comes to game pricing recently, and it seems the publisher's desire to break into the live service genre may have squandered another game's potential.

Earlier this week, the early access launch for Lost Ark impressed us with its massive concurrent player numbers, peaking at over 500,000 active players. Last night, the game had its free to play launch, opening the game up to all players and as you might expect, player numbers jumped significantly, almost doubling.

Lost Ark has been around for a little while already, garnering initial popularity in Korea, Japan and Russia. Now, thanks to a publishing deal with Amazon Games, the title has made its way over to the west and has officially launched on Steam. In early access, the game peaked at over 500,000 concurrent players but last night once the game opened up to free-to-play players, those numbers jumped up to 984,000 concurrent players.

At the time of publishing, there are still over 600,000 active players in-game, making it the second most played game on Steam, only falling behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

With Lost Ark's all-time peak now set at 983,000 players, the game has become the fourth most played game of all time on Steam, pushing Amazon's New World down to the fifth spot. The top 10 most concurrently played games on Steam currently include:

  1. PUBG (3.2 million players)
  2. CS:GO (1.3 million players)
  3. Dota 2 (1.29 million players)
  4. Lost Ark (983,000 players)
  5. New World (913,000 players)
  6. Cyberpunk 2077 (830,000 players)
  7. Valheim (498,000 players)
  8. Terraria (486,000 players)
  9. Capcom Arcade Stadium (481,000 players)
  10. Fallout 4 (471,000 players)

Lost Ark is now available in North America, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. At launch, the game includes 15 hero classes, ranked and unranked modes, PvP, end-game dungeons and raids, as well as a full storyline.

Techland finally made it to the finish line this week and released Dying Light 2: Stay Human. The game has garnered mixed to positive reviews from critics and now, players are jumping in for themselves, propelling the game into the top ten most played titles on Steam.

Dying Light 2's PC launch is off to a particularly good start, peaking at 225,000 concurrent players. That puts Dying Light 2 in the number four spot for most concurrent players on Steam, coming out ahead of Apex Legends, Rust, GTA V, and others. As you might expect, the likes of CS:GO, Dota 2 and PUBG maintained their positions in the top three.

At over 200,000 concurrent players, Dying Light 2 has far surpassed the original Dying Light on Steam, which had a peak concurrent player count of 46,000. Compared to other recent PC launches, like God of War (73,000) and Monster Hunter Rise (134,000), Dying Light 2 pulls away with the most players by a significant margin.

Currently, Dying Light 2 sits at the top of Steam's top seller list and has garnered ‘Mostly Positive' reviews from players.

Following a surprise launch yesterday evening, Halo Infinite has already gone on to become the most played Xbox Game Studios title on Steam, wiping out the record that Forza Horizon 5 set just a week ago.

Forza Horizon 5 just had the largest day-one launch of a game in Xbox history, attracting 4.5 million players on release day across PC and Xbox consoles. We don't know how many players Halo Infinite Multiplayer has attracted on Xbox yet, but we do know that the game on Steam peaked at over 272,000 players on its first day.

This is the largest peak concurrent player count for any Xbox Game Studios title on Steam. At the time of writing, there are over 131,000 players playing the game on Steam right now.

This number doesn't reflect the full player base, as Halo Infinite Multiplayer is also free to pick up on the Xbox Game Pass app on PC, the Windows Store, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and its also available via Xbox Cloud Gaming as well.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer is technically in beta right now, but all content is already in the game and the first multiplayer season and battle pass are live. The full game, with the campaign mode included, will be launching on the 8th of December.

Fortnite has experienced rapid growth since its release last year, taking just four months to hit 40 million players and nine months to surpass 125 million players. Epic Games is continuing this upward trajectory, celebrating 200 million players registered to its ultra-popular free-to-play battle royale.

The developer confirmed the milestone to the Wall Street Journal, showing 60 percent growth from reported numbers disclosed in June. Perhaps even more impressive is the concurrent player count, which has almost doubled since February, jumping from 4.3 million to 8.3 million players.

Given that the statement attributes the statistics to “Fortnite” without its Battle Royale subtitle, it’s possible that the figures could include the as-of-yet-unreleased Save the World game mode. Save the World debuted two months earlier than its Battle Royale counterpart for a $40 entry fee, and is expected to launch fully sometime in 2019.

Battle Royale is the real draw, however, already having reached its full release across PC, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. The game currently sits as the most-viewed game on livestreaming platform Twitch, which according to industry tracking site Newzoo, it has held the title since March.

Epic is continuing its storytelling within Battle Royale, as Season 7 looks to usher in a potential festive blanket of snow, provided predictions of the encroaching storm clouds are anything to go by. This has been accompanied with a slew of timed cosmetics, particularly designed for the winter.

KitGuru Says: It looks like there’s no slowing down for Epic’s Fortnite, but every game has its peak. Have you tried the game’s Battle Royale mode? Or better yet, have any of you given the paid Save the World game mode a go?

PC fans have been waiting for Monster Hunter World for quite some time since its initial release, and while response has been mixed, this hasn’t stopped Capcom’s action RPG from topping the charts. Not only has Monster Hunter World managed to break into Steam’s top 10 all-time concurrent player count, but it’s become the biggest Japanese game on the platform by doing so.

According to SteamCharts’ data, Monster Hunter World managed to pull in a peak of 239,779 concurrent players at launch, taking 7th place in Steam’s top recordings of all games released on the platform and becoming the biggest launch of 2018. This has dethroned Dark Souls 3 as Japan’s top game on the platform, almost doubling its record of 129,831 players in April 2016.

Just one day later, Monster Hunter World is continuously climbing in its concurrent player count, reaching 256,077 as of writing. This moves the title from 7th to 6th place, overtaking PayDay 2’s 247,628 set in June of last year. While it’s unlikely to overtake Grand Theft Auto V’s 360,761 all-time record, it shows that Capcom is certainly onto a winner despite its lack of investment in the PC platform prior.

These milestones aren’t entirely unexpected, given that Monster Hunter World drove Capcom’s profits through the roof when it released on console earlier this year, up 8.4 percent year-on-year. It managed to shift 8 million units within the first quarter and has proven to be a bona fide hit across all platforms.

KitGuru Says: It’s good to see Japanese developers focus more on the PC platform, with this success hopefully setting a precedent moving forward. Have you jumped into Monster Hunter World yet?

Update: It seems that false reports have been circulating the internet claiming that BattlEye released data showing 99 percent of hackers on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds were from the Chinese region. The anti-cheat firm has gone on to confirm that it has said no such thing and that the information has perhaps been mistaken for something creator Brendon Greene has said instead.

As I originally expected, the information reported by Youxi Story might have been a little blown out of proportion, as the only details released by BattlEye pertaining to the scale of cheaters coming from China specifically has been this Tweet. Instead, the anti-cheat maker suggests that the percentage might have been confused with something said by PlayerUnknown himself in this podcast.

Regardless of where the information might have come from, it still remains dilute and unconfirmed. While there might be a sizeable portion of the hackers coming from China, it seems more like news to fuel the fire of hate surrounding the lack of progress developers have seemingly made concerning the problem. Still, Bluehole and PUBG Corp are hard at work on minimalising the damage and ensuring the game remains fun for its players.

Original Story:

Smash hit battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has hit a whopping 30 million sales on PC alone, less than a year after its initial release. Unfortunately, its concurrent players have dropped by around 5 percent, sparking conversation about the title’s future.

Hitting the 30 million sales milestone, as shown by SteamSpy, is no small feat and it’s something that very few games get to achieve throughout their lifetime, let alone less than a year of release and just two months after launching its full version.

In fact, the staggering growth of PUBG is likely the reason for its sudden decrease in concurrent players, as it’s impossible to maintain at its current rate. Another reason attributed to the decline is Bluehole’s new anti-cheat measures finally yielding results, cutting out an unwanted chunk of the community thanks to BattlEye and its own in-house systems.

Over 30 million copies sold, shown courtesy of SteamSpy.

Adding fuel to the fire, Youxi Story reports statistics showing that 99 percent of cheaters do, in fact, come from China alone, and that 45 percent of all PUBG accounts are tied to the region. The site sources BattlEye regarding its numbers but nothing publicly release by the anti-cheat software confirms these percentages. BattlEye has previously gone on record to confirm that the majority of cheats do tend to originate in the country, however.

Regardless, Chinese publisher Tencent states that introducing a server into the region will quell these problems further, with the use of plug-ins if the problem is particularly bad.

Despite its drop in players, PUBG still maintains a healthy 1.5 million average concurrent players and peaks above 3 million. This is more than the remaining 9 of the top 10 combined, so it’s safe to say that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is far from slowing down.

KitGuru Says: I'd personally expect concurrent players to slow down a little further, considering most games tend to calm a little within their first year. That being said, PUBG is no ordinary title, having conquered so many milestones that it's difficult to keep up with. Do you think the developer has made much progress on banning cheaters? Have you stopped playing PUBG?

After several months of hype building Bungie's Destiny 2 launched in the middle of last week. Things seem to have been going very well so far too, as over the weekend more than 1.2 million guardians were logged in to Destiny playing at once.

With 1.2 million concurrent players, Destiny 2 is off to a great start. It is also worth remembering that this number was reached based on the console launch alone, later on in October Destiny 2 will also hit PC, which may bring another big boost.

For comparison's sake, PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds also surpassed 1 million concurrent players recently, surpassing PC gaming giants like Dota 2 and CS:GO. Destiny 2 won't be launching on Steam, which means some Steam loyalists may not jump on board. However, Battle.net is still a solid and widely used platform, so that shouldn't hinder the game too much.

KitGuru Says: 1.2 million concurrent players is a huge amount but we have yet to see whether or not Bungie will be able to keep everyone coming back for more with future content releases. Did any of you jump on to Destiny 2 last week during launch? I'm still trying to wait for the PC version myself.
