Though there may not be an E3 this year, Geoff Keighley’s Summer Games Fest seems to be serving as a suitable replacement. With that, Devolver Digital has now announced that they will be partaking in this year’s Summer Game Fest, and it will be hosted by industry veteran Suda51.

In a tongue-in-cheek manner typical of Devolver Digital, the studio released a teaser to their Summer Game Fest event, revealing that the showcase will go live on Thursday the 9th of June at 3PM Pacific Time (11PM UK Time).

As with previous years’ showcases, the Devolver Digital presentation will be continuing the now years-long plot involving mind control, blood, monsters, laughs, game announcements – and most importantly for this year – a giant robot controlled by Industry veteran Suda51 (known best for the No More Heroes series). The plot for this year’s event reads as follows:

“A clueless team of Devolver Digital execs, scrambling to produce a presentation, accidentally trigger a reality-bending, industry-wide event that threatens the very fabric of video game time and space.”

Though the humour might not be for everyone, Devolver has seen great success in the past with these wacky and unconventional conferences. Each year the publisher has managed to up the ante and this year seems no different.

With Suda51 said to be hosting this year, it is safe to assume that he and his team at Grasshopper Manufacture will have something to show at this event. We will have to wait and see.

Though events taking place earlier in the year such as E3 and GDC had been cancelled or postponed due to fears surrounding COVID-19, it was unknown whether the latter half of the year would see a similar response, or whether companies were confident that the pandemic would be over by that time. It has now been confirmed that Gamescom, the biggest gaming event in the world measured by the number of attendees, has cancelled its late August event in favour of a digital replacement.

This news comes in the wake of the German government announcing that all major events leading up to the 31st of August were to be banned. As Gamescom was initially set to take place between the 25th and 29th of August, it was included in the ban. Of course, as the event was on the cusp of the threshold of acceptability, the event organisers could have theoretically shifted the date by a week, thereby allowing the event to take place, with minimal effects to its planning. It would seem as though the current unpredictability of the world however, has led to Gamescom playing it safe.

Taking to Twitter to make a statement on the matter, Gamescom announced that “even though not all details are known at present, the nationwide ban on major events until the end of August will also affect the planning for #gamescom2020. Furthermore: gamescom 2020 will definitely take place digitally! We will provide further information shortly.”

As previously mentioned, Gamescom is one of the biggest gaming events of the year, and dwarfs all others in terms of the number of attendees with over 370,000 people making the trip in 2019. This of course is counter to the messaging of social distancing which many governments across the world have urged its citizens to partake in. It is therefore unsurprising to see that Gamescom’s physical event has been cancelled.

That being said, it’ll be interesting to see whether the digital event will be able to take place during the same timeframe of late August, or whether it’ll have to be pushed back. Gamescom is still four months away – though with how much planning is required for these events – we’ll have to wait and see whether they manage to hit that late-August date.

If you thought the video of the MIT Cheetah robot, that can run faster than the world's quickest human sprinters was creepy, take a peek at the new video from Google (soon to be Alphabet) owned Boston Dynamics, which has a six foot tall bipedal robot named Atlas, running through the woods. Cue the psycho theme, it's coming to get us.

atlas
Show off.

The footage is initially impressive, because it showcases how good Atlas is at balancing. It's able to withstand being struck from the side, walking over rugged terrain and readjusting itself it it starts to lose its balance. While it might require a giant power-cable to keep it operating, its autonomy is impressive, leading up to the final shot of the video where it's speed-walking through the woods.

If this was shot at night, it would be terrifying.

This video came out of a robotics conference held earlier this month, where researchers from MIT, Kiva Systems, DARPA and Harvard University all showed off what they were working on. It includes crowd aware robots, that can adjust depending on what their fellow bots are doing, robots that can open doors and discussions of the future of robotics.

One suggestion was to create robots that could aid in disaster recovery. In the wake of an explosion, nuclear disaster or other hazardous environment, robots could be sent in first to recover survivors or contain any dangerous problems. A full video of the conference can be viewed below:

The Nintendo World Championships are a legendary entry in the history of gaming. Back before Esports, before LoL and StarCraft and Quake, before all of it, Nintendo held a competition to find the best gamers in America, by having them play a custom NES cartridge featuring three specific levels from Nintendo games. That one and done competition hasn't been seen since 1990, but this year it's coming back as part of Nintendo's E3 conference.

On 30th May, Nintendo will have qualifying tournaments taking place at participating Best Buy stores around the US. It's not been announced as of yet what the qualifying game(s) will be, but presumably they won't be until the day, so as not to give anyone an unfair advantage.

God help us if Lucas shows up…

When the regional victors have been chosen, Nintendo will fly them and some select competitors also invited by Nintendo (perhaps some pro gamers or celebrities?) to Los Angeles, where at the Nokia Theatre on the 14th June, they'll go head to head on multiple rounds of Nintendo games, to crown the 2015 World Champion. There will be live spectating as well as online coverage, so anyone that wants to watch will be able to.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbvzyY1FKr0′]

Other events taking place during the E3 conference include Nintendo's Digital Event, where its main news of the show will be announced, taking place on the 16th June, beginning at 9AM Pacific. It will also host a “Nintendo Treehouse,” which will take place during the show and give online viewers a chance to see what's happening at the Nintendo booth, as well as hear talks from developers working on Wii U and 3DS titles.

Google's annual I/O conference is set to take place at the end of this month and rumor has it that we will get our first look at Google's next version of Android at the event. The next version of Android is going to be dubbed ‘Android M', the final name will be revealed at a later date.

Earlier this week, Google announced the schedule for its conference, with Android M mentioned by name: “Android M is bringing the power of Android to all kinds of workplaces. This opens huge new markets for hundreds of millions of devices to workers at small business, deskless workers, logistics and warehousing jobs; all be empowered by adoption of Android devices at Work”.

After the panel description began making the rounds, Google swiftly removed it from the official schedule. However, at this point, the cat is pretty much out of the bag. However, it does seem a bit too soon for a new version of Android as adoption of Lollipop has been crawling along at a snail's pace.

That said, Lollipop did not have a smooth launch so hopefully Google can correct its previous mistakes with Android M.

Microsoft has been showing off a lot of new features at its Build conference over the past 24 hours, but one of the more exciting technologies was a realtime, expanded demonstration of Hololens, the company's augmented reality headset. Utilising a camera that could show the audience what a user was seeing, we checked out multiple holographic apps, built under Windows 10 and even saw a virtual TV follow the demonstrator from room to room, so he could continue watching his show.

hololens-follow

Hololens was shown off earlier this year in a conceptual video, with lots of CGI to help us understand just what the hardware was capable of and this was simply a more realistic demonstration. On a stage modelled to look like ‘Darren's apartment, we were shown different applications like a calendar, weather tracker and Bing search tool, all of which were innovatively ‘placed' around the room. A TV was on the wall, along with a virtual photo frame of loved ones to remind him to keep in touch.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglZb5CWzNQ']

Other additions include a holographic dog that wags its tail when given attention to and a nodding robot, but perhaps one of the coolest parts of the system is tying displays to the user. As Darren makes his way around the stage, he can have the virtual TV – which he can resize to as big as he wants – follow him around, so regardless of which room in the augmented house he's in, the TV will come right along with him.

The fact that all of these apps were built within Windows 10 too, should mean that once Hololens is released, many different uses for the holographic technology will appear before long.

Multiplay iSeries events aren't the world's biggest exhibitions – they are still built around the LAN itself afterall – but they're getting bigger every year, which means its ever harder to decide what to showcase as part of our “what's on at Multiplay series.” We've covered iSeries events before, which you can read about here, but if you're on the fence about whether to pop down for a day, or whether you should book a weekend pass for the next one, here's some of the most interesting stuff on show at this year's biggest UK based LAN party.

2k01

Obviously there's some big games on show, which is why this popular – but fragile – fella' was in prominent position near the 2K area.

2k02

He was there to help draw in the punters for Borderlands The Pre-Sequel, which wasn't really necessary, as it was one of the most popular exhibits there. Those that braved the queues (which are destined to be far longer on the traditionally busier Saturday) were treated to a quick game of the upcoming FPS from Gearbox, which is due out mid October on all the usual platforms.

2k03
This is one game I did get a chance to play today and it's as awesome as it was when I first tried it

However that wasn't 2K's only big title on show at i52, it also had Evolve, which drew some giant crowds at times. Gamers were given the chance to play as any combination of the eight hunters unveiled so far, as well as either the Goliath of Kraken monsters. Queues varied from 10 minutes to over half an hour but are likely to be longer tomorrow. Pick your moment is my advice if you're attending. If it looks lengthy, wait a while and check back, you might find it's substantially smaller.

nosgoth

Nosgoth is back again, drawing in decent crowds. It didn't quite bring in the massses like 2K's booths, but with its 20 stations, it was able to cater to more.

minecraft02

As usual Minecraft was a massive draw too, especially with the younger gamers in attendance. While these shots aren't exactly teeming, this was one of the busier areas of the show floor today. Expect it to be mobbed come tomorow.

Things haven't been looking good over at Blackberry for a while now and the company might not be able to bounce back at all this time. The phone maker has not only cancelled its yearly conference but it has also pulled the plug on two phones it had in development for next year.

Blackberry does have an alternative in place of its cancelled conference it announced in a blog post: “Instead, we’re planning to continue with an engaging lineup of smaller, targeted events taking place all around the world over the next 12 months. These events are designed with a greater focus on the specific business, developer, and partner audiences, and will allow you to get the most out of your attendance.”

News of the event being cancelled followed on from the company's massive $4.4 billion loss during this year's third quarter. Considering the massive loss, the next bit of news doesn't come as much of a surprise, Blackberry has shut down development on two phones: “The company also made the decision to cancel plans to launch two devices to mitigate the identified inventory risk.” This information was buried in an earnings report which The Wall street Journal uncovered.

KitGuru Says: Things are looking pretty bleak for Blackberry right now, we'll see if the company's new CEO can turn things around.

Well you wouldn't expect it to do a Microsoft now would you?

Putting its big dog forward, the NSA chief General Keith Alexander spoke out at a cyber security conference yesterday, where he addressed security professionals from around the world, promising to answer any questions they had. While Wired points out that he wasn't exactly that open in his responses, preferring to stick to a set few queries, he did address a points brought forward by the recent Edward Snowden revelations.

“What comes out is we're collecting everything. That is not true,” he said, suggesting that there was a lot of internal auditing procedures that prevent NSA agents from abusing their powers. Continuing, he suggested that as many as 54 potential terror plots have been prevented because of the PRISM monitoring system. It was also reiterated, that a lot of the surveillance came about because of the US' inability to prevent the 11th September attack on the World Trade Centre.

nsa

“We had intercepts of one of the 9/11 hijackers from Yemen,” he said, “[but] we didn't know because we didn't have the tools and the capabilities to see that he was actually in California […] The intelligence community failed to connect those dots, and now what we're doing is putting in to the existence these programmes.”

Alexander also chose to highlight the phone records collection scheme, that's legally allowed under the Patriot act introduced by George Bush junior, saying that only meta data is collected and that no content of calls, texts or location data is record. This means that only the length of the call and the phone numbers of those involved in the communication are saved.

“The NSA only has the number […] FBI can take that to see where it connects to, using the NSL and the legal authorities given to them to take the next step,” he said.

The FISA act, extended by President Obama last year, allows for a bit more information to be gathered, namely the content of email and social networking chats, but that does have to involved non-US citizens on some level. It can be a conversation with US and non-US persons, but at least one of them has to be a foreign national that the NSA has some interest in, for reasons of potential terrorism.

There were a few that didn't believe Alexander now however, one suggesting that since he lied to congress, why wouldn't he lie to them?

Kitguru Says: Part of the problem with the whole PRISM scheme, is we don't believe these claims that it's only terrorism that's being targeted. It's harder still when we have David Cameron here in the UK lumping traditional porn viewers and child pornographers in the same paragraphs about internet crackdowns. How long before Tempora or something similar is used to check who's looking at “illegal porn?”

While the world of stocks and shares is supposed to be 100% water tight when it comes to the leaking of early info, for some reason every time a company is about to announce good or bad numbers – there is a corresponding increase or decrease in share values leading up to the launch. As Jen Hsun and the nVidia board prepare for Thursday's 8:35am Wedbush conference, the market seems to getting a sniff of what's happening. KitGuru dons janitorial jumpsuits and searches trash cans.

No matter how much marketing BS comes out of any company, at the end of the day, the bottom line is that numbers don't lie.

It's like your favourite football team (American or real). No matter how much you want to be a solid supporter, when the year is over – the results have either gone up or down.

Ahead of nVidia's next announcement this Thursday, the market has responded positively. Without actually knowing anything. You understand.

With his company's move to go high and low, using Tesla and Tegra, Jen Hsun does appear to have found the silver bullet for succeeding in the 21st century. The next 10 years will be defined as much by the ecosystems that surround and enable these markets as the hardware itself.

Can TWIMTBP thinking be brought into super computer and mobile device thinking?

Positive news ahead - or at least that's what the financial community believes

We've seen all kinds of docking stations for Apple's vast array of devices over the years, but perhaps nothing quite as cleverly designed as the LandingZone for MacBook Air. The docking solution was spotted at this year's Macworld|iWorld conference and really stood out thanks to the sheer ease and versatility of it.

Designed by a former Apple engineer along with a few entrepreneurs, the LandingZone is essentially a highly compact dock (only being slightly wider than the MacBook itself) that adds a bunch of extra ports to your MacBook Air when used at the desktop, giving the ability to connect up an external monitor, wired Ethernet and up to four USB 2.0 devices. The inventive makers have also designed it in a way that allows it to perfectly align itself with a MagSafe power adapter so that it can be charged/powered while docked.

To mount the MacBook Air to the dock, you simply set the rear of it onto the dock and slide its lever over. This inserts two small modules on each end into the USB and Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt ports and then you're ready to roll.

When it's time to go mobile, you simply slide the lever back over and pick up the MacBook. This means no unplugging/plugging of cables/adapters and just all round a pretty nifty, streamlined idea we think. And yes, it will be offered in two versions to suit both the 11″ and 13″ MacBook Airs.

While it's been said that the LandingZone would soon start shipping to Kickstarter investors who have pledged money to get the device into mass production, there is one setback for now (well, two actually – it's said to come in at a steep $199 upon release); and there's no Thunderbolt support. The current design is physically compatible with the latest Thunderbolt-equipped models, but the signal can't be passed through to the rear Mini DisplayPort. It's been said the main reason this was not included is due to the typical delays we see when trying to obtain licensing for new Thunderbolt equipped products from Intel.

Should they get that approved down the road, we could well be seeing another variant of the LandingZone with no limitations, including the likes of Gigabit Ethernet and perhaps some FireWire ports for further good measure.

KitGuru says: Portability on the move meets versatility at the desk? Roll it in with Thunderbolt and a more realistic price point and it's a thumbs up.
